true...
when it comes to a nation in a situation as this, id be very surprised if theyd further hurt their economy by releasing news that arent "completely necessary"...
thx, hope your right... whats up with the size7 fonts lol?

Probably that's sun radiation outside the atmosphere.
On another note, my country is neighbouring Ukraine and Chernobyl is around 800Km from here. The 1986 disaster's effects are visible if you pay attention even if nobody bothered to run a full study, the numbers of cases of leukemia and thyroid disfunctions/cancer have increased in the last 2 decades; and we weren't even in the way of radioactive winds. Water is usually the way radiation enters the body, either as rain or contaminated drinking water.
I agree with you Loque, I totally respect Michio Kaku....
The sad thing is, he doesn't sound real positive about the situation either!
My heart goes out to the people of Japan.
I know they're a proud nation and rarely ask for help from others, but I made a small dontion to the Red Cross, hopefully it helps...
saaya: Honestly, I rarely agree with your posts, but I don't blame you for being conserned!
Hopefully, weather patterns will change and keep you and Tiawan safe.
I'm not a religious man, but I'll keep all people in harms way in my thoughts and hope for the best outcome possible.
FWIW: I'm kind of dissapointed that Josh was banned.
He's obviously very knowlegable in this field, and even though he may have been overly optomistic the info he offered seemed very good.
No one knows the answers right now, but maybe hope and reason offered comfort to some...
Radiation detected in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama
Radiation levels shot up in Tokyo and its vicinity Tuesday following the nuclear accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan that was triggered by last week’s massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami, local governments said
In Tokyo, small amounts of radioactive substances, such as iodine and cesium, were detected, the metropolitan government said.
In Ibaraki Prefecture, adjacent to Fukushima Prefecture where the troubled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant is located, the amount of radiation at one stage reached 5 microsievert per hour, 100 times higher than usual, the Ibaraki prefectural government said.
In Kanagawa Prefecture, the radiation level shot up 10 times higher than usual.
In Saitama, capital of Saitama Prefecture, the amount of radiation reached 1,222 nanosievert per hour—a figure about 40 times higher than usual.
7,000-10,000mSv – Person dies from radiation poisoning. (Full body exposure).
1,000mSv – Nausea and vomiting (Full body exposure).
500mSv – Decrease of lymphocytes in peripheral blood (white blood cells that defend your body) (Full body exposure).
200mSv – No clinical conditions confirmed below this number
10mSv – 1 year’s worth of natural radiation (Brazil)
6.9mSv – CT scan
2.4mSv – 1 year’s worth of natural radiation (world average)
1mSv – Limit of one’s year’s exposure to non-natural radiation (excluding medical examinations)
0.6mSv – Stomach X-ray
0.2mSv – A return air trip from Tokyo to New York
0.05mSv – Chest X-ray (or the level of radiation expected around a nuclear power plant – in practice it is much lower than this)

Thanks Dan....that makes a bit more sense
even a radiation chart is cute, <3 Japanese ;)
それわかわいいです!
This is reponding to Saaya.

Japan Radiation Leak from Fukushima Nuclear Plant TEXT Message HOAX

Did you receive this message on your phone yesterday?
japan radiation leak text hoax
READ: "BBC FLASHNEWS: Japan [government] confirms radiation leak at fukushima nuclear plants. Asian countries should take necessary precautions. Remain indoors [for the first 24 hours]. Close doors and windows. Swab neck skin with betadine where thyroid area is, radiation hits thyroid first. Take extra precaution, radiation may hit Philippines starting 4PM [today]. [Please] send to [your] friends."
Well, before you start dabbing betadine on your neck, read this: This text message is a hoax. It's fake. So drop the bottle.
The explosion that happened at Fukushima Nuclear Plant apparently poses very little threat to the Philippines. Quoting GMANews:
Earlier on Monday, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario Montejo said Monday a "Chernobyl scenario" of radiation clouds from a failed nuclear power plant in quake- and tsunami-devastated Japan may subside in a few days' time.
Montejo said while they are not discounting a leakage from the nuclear plant in Fukushima, the threat is small and there is "very little" threat to the Philippines.
"There is no immediate threat to the Philippines ... (We are) very optimistic in a few days pwede na natin bitawan yan (We are very optimistic in a few days we can declare no threat to the country)," Montejo said in an interview on dwIZ radio.
[...]
Montejo also said one of the supposed nuclear plant explosions was actually a "calibrated vent," adding the plants had redundant safety precautions in place.
Such safety precautions included containment vessels that would keep radiation from getting out of the plant, he said.
So again, there's nothing to fear.
Seriously, what's it with the individuals who started this scare? What's the point in planting fear in the hearts and minds of people at a time like this?
TP Friends, there's already enough chaos, fear and suffering in the world today. Let's not contribute to the problem by not spreading this hoax of a text message. Instead, let's continue to pray for Japan and for God to protect the Philippines at all times.
Sage advice
i think it was caused by a misunderstanding or overhyping...
keep in mind, us army vessels that were FAR from fukushima were exposed to notable radioactivity...
so i wouldnt be surprised if you could meassure radioactivity in the phillipines... but its hopefully very low...
From the bbc live tweet
This sounds really bad :(Quote:
There is a fire at a spent fuel pond of a reactor and radioactivity has been released into the atmosphere, says the IAEA according to AFP news agency.
You know TW media is full of bubble heads that doesn't understand jack :banana::banana::banana: and over sensationalize every single of bad news out there, praying on public scares.
Watch that scale. It is quoted in MILI Sieverts. News reports are in NANO sieverts. 1000x difference.
from what i read and heard on tv:
yes, but reactor4 hasnt been used for a while... it still had fuel rods inside the pool that were cooling down. water should be at 40C but since water supply was cut after the quake, and radiation from the other reactors was very high which heated up the water as well, so water reached 80C and water levels went down, and somehow this caused a fire, but thats not an issue according to them.
1 and 3 are supposedly stable now, the rods might have melted inside the core containers, but the reactors are flooded and submerged in sea water so they should stay cool... BUT every day they have to vent the core and let out radioactive gases
2 is pretty much the same, BUT the pressure tank the reactor is submerged in has been breached and is leaking...
they are talking about mili sieverts now :(
up to 400 close to the reactors...
100 is enough to temporarily sterilize you, cause your skin to burn and give you nausea if i understood it correctly (japanese tv news)
EDIT: radioactivity at the entrance of the plant, not NEXT to the reactors, has now reached 590 mili sieverts : / (isnt 1000 deadly?)
and reactor 2 is getting flooded now...
reactor 1 and 3 already are flooded and supposedly "stable"
reactor 5 and 6 are slowly heating up as a little as well, and are going to get more attention now, they will try to keep them cool as well now
sorry wrong information again......... also not Army but Navy
The U.S. 7th Fleet has moved its ships and aircraft away from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant in Japan after low levels of contamination were detected in the air and found on the crews of three helicopters returning from disaster relief missions near Sendai.
The contamination found on the 17 crewmembers was easily removed by washing with soap and water, and the ship and aircraft move is only temporary, according to a 7th Fleet release.
“To put this into perspective, the maximum radiation dose received was equal to the amount of natural background radiation one would receive in one month from sources such as rocks, soil and the sun,”

1 Sv is not instant death, probably around 10 Sv will cause that, but there is a chance that you will die within months or a few years, or live the rest of your life suffering from various diseases or malformations.
I found this in a Chernobyl report:
Quote:
A dose greater than 0.5 sievert (Sv) is considered to be a high dose of radiation. Above this threshold, adverse effects become apparent immediately or after a few days at most. The immune system is weakened, changes in blood count occur, and the digestive tract, lungs, other internal organs and the central nervous system are all damaged. With absorbed doses of 1 to 2 Sv and above, mortality is expected to be about 20%, according to radiation medicine specialists (36.1). Above a dose of 7 Sv the survival rate is zero.
my mistake, BIG difference :P
one of the ships affected was an aircraft carrier 100 miles off the coast of japan... and i dont care how they "put things into perspective" it was enough radiation they had to scrub the ship and crew, thats 100 miles away... thats all the perspective i need
not listening to tw media, im watching a japanese tv newstream...
awesome link btw, thx again mark :toast:
yes, its at the plant but MUCH higher than it SHOULD be, you make it sound like its normal...
alright, so 1000 doesnt cause immediate death but ONLY full body poisoning causing diseases and possible later death... much better, im relieved!
and fyi, the radiation surged to above 11 THOUSAND mili sieverts this morning... still think its all hyped up by the media? :P
radiation dropped to 600 now, still... im nervous about this and will monitor the situation closely... if something goes down it only takes a day until it could affect me...
yeah i read that as well...

1 rem = 0.01 Sv = 10 mSv = 10000 μSv
1 millirem = 0.00001 Sv = 0.01 mSv = 10 μSv
1 Sv = 100 rem
1 mSv = 100 mrem = 0.1 rem
1 μSv = 0.1 mrem
the highest radiation speculated to have been created at chernobyl was 30,000 roentgens per hour, which is 30k rem
11.000 mSv = 11 Sv = 1100 rem = 1.1k rem
so 1/30 of chernobyl... but only temporarily...
or did i make a mistake?
250 rem = cancer
2.5 rem = 1 in 100 people exposed to this dies within years?
http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/n...aster?page=0,1Quote:
For every 250 rem received, there will be a cancer. That’s pretty well defined. So if one person picks up 2.5 rem, for every hundred people, one of them will get a cancer. That’s just a statistical crapshoot.
250 rem = 2.5 Sv = 2500 mSv
2.5 rem = 0.025 Sv = 25 mSv
radiation outside the plant is above 600 mSv now, correct?
not a problem? opinions definitely seem to diverge here even among experts...
Those cancer statistics seem a bit off (or stupid) and its not a linear relationship
I'm not sure, but yesterday i think it was at around 002.50 . Where is this counter located ?
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/geiger..._medium=social
background radiation is around 10-30 cpm (counts per minute) iirc
