A lot of luck and typing in the cpu stepping code in ebay is how I found mine.

i see a few months back theyy were finding the 2.0 chips for $20-40 and now the cheapest ones i can find are $100 with the cheapest 1.66 chips being $46
edit: found some 1.66 chips for 25 each
beefed up cooling for the CPUs.. temps were still a lil too hi for my tastes.. I had a 120mm @7V of-centre, now I have a dead-on-centre 12V 140mm.. seriously, what are 'normal' temps for sossy cpus when they are crunching?
i also finally placed the case side on.. had it of before.. thats why my cpu temps went up & so I placed the 140mm there instead..
Here's what mine is at right now:

I'm using the fans from a couple of 1.7GHz Celerons (P4 vintage) that I modified to fit.
http://fyez6q.bay.livefilestore.com/...hot.jpg?psid=1
so are these normal?
sorry, dumb questions D_A.. just looked back @ ur rig pic.. normal HSs. I see the fans ur using too.. man.. I dont get it.. surely my HSs are not inadequate?? :(
I'm using the genuine heatsinks which I lapped slightly to clean up some marks. No mirror finish malarkey, just a tidy up. For TIM I'm using Arctic Cooling Ceramique (blob in the centre application method). I'm also using an open cardboard box as a case so there's no heat collecting in there.
admittedly I have no fans shifting heat OUT.. I have 2x 120mm intakes, one @ front - intake for entire case - & one on side for GPU cooling.. I have one fan in the top section but the top section of my case side is cut open, so there is no 'suction' / 'flow thru' so-to-speak from the front fan to the rear :(
If you're running passive or close to it then case ventilation is everything. Your case SOUNDS like it shouldn't have a hot air pocket in it, though.
Just looking at your temps again, one of your heatsinks might not be tensioned evenly.
Tiro , I have temps around 40°C with one 92mm fan covering half of the heatsinks :D
So something is definitely wrong, temps should never be that high
I use an IR Thermometer to pin point hot spots. There are cheap knock offs, but the accuracy can be off by like +-10*.
yay got my backplate today :p:...
got everything left for this sossi in the mail :D yay gona be done and on the grid soon!
can i run em fanless..?
They do need SOME cooling, even if not much by modern standards. Consider how hot a 25w light bulb gets, (go grab one, it'll be fun! j/k you do that and you're on you're own) and then consider that these things consume about 31w each. A single 120mm fan comfortable does both, cost almost nothing to run and is all but silent.
I'm using two fans I salvaged from old P4 level chips (1.7GHz Celerons) I snagged at the land fill. A little tweaking and they attach to the genuine heatsinks no problem.
anyone got a RAID config running of the ICH5R with with either Vista or W7?
if so, where'd you get the drivers from?
Our local dump has a section where you can drop stuff off for other people to buy for a couple of bucks depending on what it is. A whole computer case, guts included, is about $6, $2 for a monitor etc. IT waste costs a lot to recycle (and they can get fined for just ploughing it into the ground) so the dump is happy to sell stuff rather than have to pay to get it taken away.
ok.. now i'm getting a lil aggro.. I took my rig apart.. made some new HS brackets out of solid copper (instead of acrylic - I figured the acrylic would have an insulative effect).. the temps on one CPU went the lowest I've seen.. the other CPU? well.. it was initially (when I first put the rig together) the cooler of the 2.. its temps shot up to ~95C

my HSs have *never felt hot... I wonder if the temp diode thingy is screwed.. any why to diagnose this?
Again I would suspect that your heatsink isn't square on the die and is lifting up on one side, in this case badly.
It is possible the diode is screwy, of course, but it's rather unlikely.
I just did some.. 'testing'.. I laid the case on its side & took off the Cu brackets - so now the HSs were resting on the CPUs by their weight alone.. & then booted the rig up.. temps were fairly even between the 2 CPUs, which is a first, but both still higher than what u guys are getting.. I then wanted to know which CPU is which in HWM, so I simply tilted the HS of the lower CPU: 55 to 75 C in 2 secs :D ... I then applied pressure to it (by hand).. negligible change.. I then did the same to the higher CPU, roughly the same pressure..: system freeze. The higher CPU is the CPU that initially had the higher temps.. I have tried *many different levels of HS pressure mounting..
not sure what to do
vaguely comtemplating changing HS orientation
ok, fired her up again.. HSs just resting by weight along, no Cu bracket.. I held the 140mm in place with my hand.. temps were virtually dead even on all 4 cores (~34C).. then WCG kicked in. temps on both CPUs were even & ranged betwee 39-45C.. thats good enough - close enough to what u were getting D_A  .. ok so... must be uneven bracket mounting pressure
Just for temp reference, using the aluminum intel abaheatsink things, with indirect airflow from a low-medium speed 120mm fan (some quiet Ultra 120mm fan with no RPM wire) my sossaman temps were mid-40s, high 40s when the room got warm.
Now, they each have their own 80mm fan, really slow ones (NMB fans that pull only .06A and are so quiet they are probably 1200RPM, at most) mounted directly to the heatsinks, they are at 38-39C.
That setup you're using is probably going to be a right bytch to get even since, from memory, there's no springs on the mounts to take up minor variations in mounting pressure.
I've got a set of fans from a couple of 2.4GHz P4s that I'm saving for my next one ... if the chips ever arrive. Same mounts as the ones I'm using now but slightly bigger fans. I think I'll be sticking with the ABB 'sinks though. They're nice and predictable.
yeah. I had a good think about it.. I *finally realise how.. finiky it is to get it even.. today I'll be sussing out a good way to maintain even pressure - I'm thinking a shim might do the trick, tho finding the right material @ a mere 1mm thick is going to prove a wee lil difficult :p:
Go down to your nearest hardware/industrial supplier (if you have a Blackwoods or a Bakers nearby they are perfect) and you can get brass shim in sheets, rolls or in cans (the size of beer cans) containing sheets of varying thickness.
Or you could just cut up aluminium cans with some old scissors.
A set of springs on the mounting screws would probably help even out the pressures and should be available at a hardware place.
is anyone running mixed ram with success?
got my temps stabilised.. one of the cores even hit an all time low..
my temps are now:
#1: 24-40 C
#2: 27-46 C
#3: 24-35 C
#4: 25-38 C
:)
might be able to help someone out with 2x1GB ram in the near future.. *maybe.. i'll keep posted
what screws to use on 120x25mm fan to mout to oem-xs heatsinks?
I used some from an old socket 7 heatsink. They aren't log enough to go the whole thickness of the fan, but they reach through the lower ear and into the sink just fine.
is there a hotkey for bootdisk menu on the intel board?
btw i got that noctua 140mm fan for my sossi :D lol its so quiet and cools the sinks/ram/chipset yay HUGE!!
Not sure... I just set my boot order to check CD first, then hard drive.
this ebay seller will sell for 39.99 each cpu..
still too much for me.. he only has 10 and if he sells for 34.99 he breaks even..
forgive me if the link is broken as im at work and had to get linky off cellphone as work as ebay blocked..
That's not bad though, I think I paid $85 for both of mine.
Yeah, that's a good price. It's rare to get a price better than that.
You get a Sammy to say you have one. :D Mine acts as a file server and crunches WCG. When it comes to crunching, it seems to sit on par with my Athlon II X2 215 @3.2Ghz for output and power consumption, but the sammy was probably $30 cheaper.
$40 isn't a bad price. I bought mine for $25 each, but that was a rare find and not likely to come around soon.
new home for sammy:

I have 2x1GB kit sitting here, needing use.. anyone want? :)
They are here :D
just snagged 2 sossi cpus on fleabay 2xcpus's for 40$ shipped :D
who was bidding against me?

That is some sexy stuff right there tiro uspsss:up::up::up:
Thanks anyway. If he needs it to get a rig up then he needs it more than I do.
guys are this boards still available? what 's their dimensions and the consumption of chips loaded? also can the chips and ram be found for reasonable price ?
thanks
does anyone know where i could get some sammys?
i only have 2 boards, no ram, psu, heatsinks, or anything
finding sammys is a pain
Heatsinks: http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/INTEL-ABBHEAT...item19ab5cf8a7
Ram: http://cgi.ebay.com/2GB-2X-1GB-PC2-3...item35abeb64fe
Backplate for heatsinks: http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=21884
PSU: Any psu with 8 pin cpu connector or a 4 pin cpu connector psu with a 8 pin adapter.
CPUs: none at this moment (for a reasonable price)
Could have been one of the connectors, too. Hard to say.
heres *ONE* 2ghz @ an ok-ish price:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Intel-Xeon-LV...item2a09f5c182
how reasonable is 78.99 USD for a sammy?

Uk cpu's £20 if you missed in the other thread
Ebay buy it now $10 item number 370401003276 Intel Dual Xeon LV SE7520BB2 Server MotherBoard ~ New
They seem to be boxed in sixes ...might have to get one of you to get me a box :)
$55 shipping to me for a ten dollar board. :(
Ok, little tip I just discovered this morning. Others might already know this but ...
When populating your RAM in the Intel board, pay attention to where you put the modules. Pay REAL CLOSE attention.
Mine has 3GB of RAM installed, but I discovered it was only seeing 2GB of that. As it turns out, I had them installed wrong.
If you have 3 modules, they need to go in slots 1A, 2A and 3A ... NOT, as I had it, 1A, 1B and 2A. If you do the latter the board sees it as one complete dual channel set and an incomplete set, which it apparently ignores. If you put them in in the first patter I stated, you get all three modules working in single channel mode. Slot 1A is next to the power connector, btw.
While the idea IS appealing, the drama I'd get for doing so is not.
Unless you find someone who is selling the CPU's for cheap, there is no point for so many boards.

What's that Dear?
It's the new NAS unit.
Yes I did tell you about it.
We need it to store all those episodes of The Bold And The Beautiful you keep recording.
No, Dear. I don't have any ulterior motives.
Why yes, I suppose it could do my "computer thing" ... I'm glad you suggested that!
(it's an old 5MB HDD btw. Yes that's five megabyte.)
That's ok, we have a pair of used IBM P690 UNIX mainframes at work that are for sale. 32 cores each. I'd love to run those
Sorry guys I need to raise the white flag.
I've been wrestling with Ubuntu the past few weekends on my sossaman and I'm getting rather fed up. Every other thing I try with this doesn't work. Linux works but XP doesn't. A Terminal session through Putty works but VNC doesn't. WCG works but GPUGRID doesn't...
XP wouldn't connect to the net and google has not been my friend in finding any Lan drivers. So I installed ubuntu to get the thing crunching - which it has happily done since.
VNC not so much of a biggie - I'll just pull my other monitor off of my main machine when I need to.
My main gripe is my 275 sitting idle for two weeks. I've tried uninstalling BOINC to check that the protected application thing wasn't checked by accident however each time I re-install it I don't see that option screen. This was done through the terminal if that makes any difference?
I thought then that maybe I need to install the linux drivers for the 275. Finally figured out how to run a .run file and this pops up;
http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/3...ererror.th.png
When I select to update GPUGRID it returns the message "Message from server: ACEMD2: GPU molecular dynamics is not available for you..."
Any ideas?
Hang on let me see if I can find the XP drivers for the LAN for you. I know they exist, I used them before.
Here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...17600&lang=eng
You're a lifesaver Sparky
Means I can also run vantage too
What will happen to all the work in progress on my linux install?
You could do one of two things - tell it no more work, and let it run its queue out, or detach from the project so that it reassigns the units to somebody else.
To use VNC in Ubuntu you need to install the Vino Server, unless you used Ubuntu Server in which case there is no desktop to serve. For GPUGrid ... well you'll have to install the latest nVidia drivers rather than the ones in the repository.
Thanks as always guys. I've now got xp running the way I want with both wcg and gpugrid. I'll have another go at cross os vnc when my quad socket is online :)
whats the 'rule' again with the 24-pin mobo connector & 20-pin PSU? can I plug in a 20-pin connector & it still works fine?
Wasn't that with the 4 pin? I rammed one in the middle of the 8 pin until I got a new psu.
