A quick peek with some of the tape off. So far, no signs of anything too bad. Cuts came out pretty clean. Will have a closer look tomorrow.

Those came out really well, I've wanted a drill press for the longest time. So you went ahead and drilled 4 holes but apparently have not decided which rad to use...? I suspect you've already decided...the call of the quad cant neither be silenced by GTs nor quelled by the roar of the drill press....

Wow Shazza, those are SWEET cuts.... now if there was only one that could cut a box shape..

All joking aside, great machine work there. If I needed to cut holes like that for my project I'd be very tempted to pick one of those up for that price.

Not just for trying out some new power tools but also for backing yourself, well done.
You are leading by example, and are doing an outstanding job of it, all the more power to you.:yepp: :up:

However the last thing I wanted to do was scare anyone out of buying a drill press or even just stopping them from using the one they already have.

Its just that they look harmless.
They don't have sharp blades, big sharp and shiny teeth, don't spray red hot sparks at you, nor sound scary when you start them up,
they don't vibrate so much that they drag you screaming around the workshop like some demon tool possessed.

There quiet and have none of the above challenges, unless you brake there rules, then there un-forgiving.

Like Miller stated, "make certain you pay attention" all the time.
Like my old boss once told me "bad thing happen to dumb people around power tools or those that ask for it" Yeh, he was one damm! hard man, but fair.

Drill presses will give you excellent results.
They are an excellent tool to have, easy to use, if used safely they are by far safer than a hand drill when drilling large holes and will give you a square/true at 90 degress hole.

Woot, glad to see you finished with no loss of fingers. The holes look great, can't wait to see the fans all installed. Are you putting dust filters or any sort of cover on them? I only ask because the fans look so great without anything covering them up, so hopefully you'll leave them bare and beautiful.

Thx - leaning to the quad, but only if I can still get the loop routing I want. Otherwise, I can fill the empty spot with a fan.

Don't think there is any blood in this one, but there has been evidence of self-inflicted wounds in other work logs. Sleeving seems to get me.


@ kgtiger - your words of caution were good. I've overplayed my nervousness a bit here, but I took what I was doing very seriously, and appreciated the extra guidance. One thing I'll add is that I did not do the fan holes all by myself. I did the setup, drilling, etc., but my husband was with me. You might say he was my "spotter" (although he would say he was there as adult supervision). I think it is always a good idea to have someone with you when trying something new, especially if you are as inexperienced with power tools as I am :up:

@ Liderc - thanks for checking in! Initially, I'm going with no fan grills / covers. I'm mesmerized by the red fan blades spinning (I'm easily amused). The computer will be in a relatively dust-free environment, and I always have the option to add grills or filters down the road.

Yeah - those fan holes are close together (course, I could have figured that out from the template :p:). The Aluminum is thick enough that it doesn't cause an issue, but I can imagine a misplaced cut would have ended in disaster. In retrospect, this would be a good use for the older thermochill PA series rads with larger fan spacing.

Hi ward0 - was just wondering the other day when we'd see an update on your build :up:

@Incredible - I certainly can't complain about the price of the case, and it is high quality. So far, I'd say the two negatives are the tiny space behind the motherboard tray for cable management, and I'm not all that keen on the front design. I think I've got the first issue mostly worked out. Some ideas on the second, but that will take a backseat to everything else.

Ran into a speed bump on the build. Just got word that the movers are coming next week to haul our stuff to Florida - a week or two earlier than planned. This means I need to spend all my time sorting and packing stuff for the move, and I'll get skinned alive if caught messing with the build ;)

How long do you spend in Florida, is this a normal seasonal migration you and your husband do each year?

Yeah, I hate having another interruption, but not much I can do about it. Long story short - we ended up with our house in AZ when transferring here for work a couple of years ago. Now is not the time to be selling houses, so we need to spend some time in Florida (and fortunately, have a friend who will be staying at the house in AZ). Because we don't know for sure when we'll be back, we're taking the majority of our "stuff" - just not the furniture. I'm actually pretty bummed about it, cause much as I love Florida, we've settled here. And, :(:(:( our old boy Beau is going to stay here in Arizona. We don't want to disrupt him, cause he's pretty old.

Thanks, guys. He'll be fine - he loves the friend who will be living at the house. I'm the one who is going to miss his clumsy ol' self. He's got diminished lung capacity from catching Valley Fever, so he can't fly (and hates car travel), and the dry weather here is much better for him than the humidity in South Florida.
