I actually just cut the magnet with scissors - they're usually really crappy magnets :)
yay my mdpc shipment came today but since lights fading fast and i must take good pictures (listening to master nils :D)
tips on corsair 1000w psu ??
Magnet? Isn't it a ferrite bead?
What size would be appropriate for those USB/Firewire/audio cables that plug into the mobo?
I used the SATA size sleeving for the USB/Firewire/audio cables.
You can also remove the vinyl ( or whatever it is) from the USB/Firewire/Audio cables before sleeving them, if they are too bulky.
I struggle with cutting heatshrink - have to cut multiple pieces, then match them up to get even ones for 24-pin ATX, etc. I imagine many of you use something like this, but I just figured it out recently - stole my husband's little guillotine-like chopping board to do my heatshrinks - works great:

Sleeved my radiator fans with mdpc-x sleeving - I'd rather do a 24-pin unisleeving than do these:

wooow the Chopper!
those GTs looks great in red :)
TBH, I take the largest knife I have and just slice it.
wiii, sleeved my headset + a 24pin extension, and some of the pci-ex cables for the HX 1000W.

Some IC's from my DAC to my amp.
-Neutrik RCAs
-Nylon Multi-filament
-Mogami Star Quad Mic cord
I am NEVER getting Neutrik RCAs ever again....the ground solder contact felt like it was going to snap at any point, the cable opening was way too small (had to drill it out) and the insides of the barrel would catch on the nylon since it wasn't perfectly smooth.

@ob1 - i just cracked it with a hammer :D well, not hard, but still enough to crack the ring. Havent had any problems after sleeving, so i reckon they dont do much. But this is as far as I know, dont use me as a guide :p:
The most dangerous outcome can be a flattened finger I guess :D
Always a pleasure to see the great sleeving work posted here!
Here's my two cents from me current rig before I start tackling the full sleeving job to come:

hey guys can someone show how to do white? I got my white (thanks nils) and went out and bought white electrical tape but im having a hell of a time figuring out how to tape the wire up help!
Nevermind - figured it out :)

gonna be sleaving my corsair 950tx soon any advice would be great. been reading the crap out of this thread. ordered a pin remover kit because all my staples are to flimsy or to big to fit in the atx connectors :(
Best I could do with my short SLI bridge...wish the exposed bits were black
Wonder if I could tape of the connector ends and give it a quick spray with some paint before sleeving it?

@Fhantastic: Fair enough :D
@CptDreadFlint: Looks great! I love the grand bleu and black combination. I also see a little hint of aquamarine in the back ;)
@JonKbmw: Would you mind sharing your method? I'm getting some white soon and it would be very helpful to hear the best techniques :D
@Soul_train: Second pic looks nice. :) Next time don't compress the image so much though ;)
Anyways this was a little experiment: Sleeving two cables together instead of one. I used black wire, otherwise the sleeve -- stretched over two 18 awg wires -- would show the ulgy wire color underneath it. Thoughts?

Nice, Crys1s.
I did the two wire/sleeve on my first PSU - actually found it a bit tougher to "manage" the sleeved wires in the case compared to uni-sleeving.
Some more Black & White (with a tad of copper).
I will re-sleeve the cable going to the Vertex, it was the first I did and it didn't came out very well.

Weeman you should WC that board.. other then that it looks great.
Even though this isnt relative as far as the audio talk goes, i do have a question: how many wires are there in a 3,5mm microphone jack? Im in the process of sleeving a Sennheiser PC 350 headset, and i dont want the mic cable to get lonely (As in, i sleeved the sound cable :P) I have to cut off the mic jack, and solder a new one on after i've got that sleeving+heatshrink on. Tips or answers would be G.R.E.A.T
Anyone else have any trouble with their corsair HX? The staples aren't working for me.
i use a modified safety pin
looks like crap but functions well.
http://img.techpowerup.org/100225/Capture815.jpg
Get the proper tool and you will have zero problems removing the pins.
first Q: where tha hell did you got sooo much sleeving?
second Q: where tha hell did you got the plastic and the metal pins for psu connections?
and the last Q: where can i get it, if i live in US...? cheapest...
shazza can you take another pic of your radiator sleeve job? the one on the last page? I wanna kinda use your method, if thats ok, so an up clse pic would be super awesome and super appreciated
I have a question about sleeving my hx1000w.
the 24 pin and 8 pin are normal just like on all other PSU's , however the molex, sata and pci-e power cables are all flat (see image for reference)
How would I have to sleeve those to make them look good, I'd like to sleeve all the wires individually and not just pull over some sleeve and heat-shrink over the original cable because that doesn't look good at all IMO
My guess would be to insert a small knife between the individual wires and cut the stuff that bonds them together, but this would be quite difficult and the possibility of damaging the wires doesn't make it a very good idea
http://img.hexus.net/v2/psu/Corsair/...ropped-big.jpg
Don't use a knife just start at one connector and pull them apart its not hard at all. Warning though I did it to a PCI power cable and it looks like garbage better to just leave them together.
hmm, could it be possible to use the sata sleeving from mdpc-x as they are flat aswell. Or I could buy another PSU and sell this one, though that's a bit of a waste
Do you just like the look of mono cabled?
@maxietheboss: I have an HX1000w myself and all I did was gently (you don't have to go too slow) seperate the wires by hand. Just pull them apart. No trouble at all. As far as the ferrite core pieces on the modular PCI-E connectors: use an xacto knife and cut the heatshrink length wise, then pull the heatshrink off (it is stuck with glue). After that, you can remove the connector on either end and slide the ferrite core off. Very easy PSU to sleeve in my opinion.
Hope that helps!
-TadZilla
look on page 25 i think it is. he has the same psu and sleaved them individually and it looks good imo. just pull the wires apart with your hands they arent that hard to pull apart at all
Okay thanks for the info, I'll start the sleeving in a holiday.
Don't have time during the week so it'll probably be in another 2 months that I'll do the job :P
Just finished one 6+2 PCI-e (the +2 was a major pain in the ass as the shrink wouldn't fit into the connector), and I finished off with the front panel stuff. Thanks to Antec for providing me a few replacement parts so promptly. Sleeving done wrong meant I had no power/reset switches :D

I'm not too happy with the job on the PCI-e, but it will have to do. I'm not re-doing it for the 4th time
No work today so I had time to install 2nd video card and make custom 6 pin x 2. Redid SLI bridge and no more red....all black now :-)
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...y/DSC00702.jpg
i used your idea on my crossfire connectors :D mine isnt mdpcx sleeve though so ou can see the connectors just a little but whatever. im happy with it. I have some tripple braid sleeve but none big enough to fit over the connector parts
really nice sleeving guys. mdpc-x ftw!
Thought I would post this here to show a comparison for those who might be considering these cables from NZXT versus the MDPC-X sleeving:
Sorry for the not so great picture, I took it real quick and the lighting was not so good.
[Top]: MDPC
[Middle]:NZXT
[Bottom]:CleanCut Sleeving
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4030/...f103bfe1_o.jpg
[Impressions]: I prefer the tigther weave of the MDPC-X sleeving and actually the CleanCut Sleeving is not bad either. The NZXT extension for the price is not bad for someone who doesnt want to pay the price premium of the MDPC-X sleeving and time it would take to sleeve it.
Question: Does the official Molex ATX pin remover that Nils sells work? I didn't order one initially as I thought staples would work, but they didn't so now I'm looking at ordering one. Also, is it easier to just cut and crimp new connectors?
Making a 5v LED mod. I picked up a 100ohm resistor and a wide angle 800mcd LED from Radio Shack. I calculated the current rating for the LED being attached to a 5v rail and figured a single 100ohm resistor should be ok. After it was soldered, I used some heat shrink and sleeving. =D

It works perfectly, but depends just as much on the PSU manufacturer as the tools themselves. Some are a lot easier to remove than others, corsair's always seem to be difficult for me.
I never cut and crimped myself, so i can't comment on that. But i suppose it would also help having the exactly length of cable you need without excess.

Let's paint with sleeve :)

I'm getting a Jackson Pollock vibe here :p:.
Nice job fhantastic! I love the green sleeving!
Nils, I got my order the other day, thanks for all the help! I've only sleeved a SATA cable so far as I'm still deciding on whether I really want to sleeve my Seasonic 700W or just drop some coin on a new PSU.
Ferhan this looks awesome!
Nils any new colors in near future?
I love MDPC sleeve :)

You can do it yourself like a young god !:clap::clap:
Thanks lol. :) I was just curious.
Some, although it was meant for a new graphics card. But if I want a high-end single or dual graphics card, I guess it makes sense to get a PSU first. Otherwise, it's kind of like putting the cart before the horse.

I swear MDPC-X sleeve is like an addiction. You buy so much and then Nils and Crys1s_Gam3r come on here and post pics like that...
*shuffles off to MDPC-X to look at more sleeve*
Hey Crys1s_Gam3r,
Your sleeving is sick man... I'm amazed how you fit the heatshrink into the square slots on the molex connectors. I had problems with doing it. You using a heat gun on the entire heatshrink or do you go over the one that gets inserted into the connectors an extra time?
I know the feeling exactly. :) I just placed a large order, and am now kicking myself for not ordering more colored sleeve ;)
Thank you! :) I heat the heatshrink in one rotating pass with the "1000 F" temp setting on my heatgun. Before it completely cools, I insert it into the connector until it clicks.
Are you using MDPC heatshrink? Other heatshrink I've used has been too thick, and was unable to go into the connector (even with my method above).
Crysis: Your heatshrink-techniques are perfect, perfect, perfect! A big pleasure to look at - candy for my eyes!
bah.. i want to just get one of those nifty drawings lol. meh i dont want to wait to buy sleeving.. spending all my moneys on hardware and cooling..
I believe so. lol... The black I've ordered awhile back I cut up in 6" sections. I believe it is! I'll be ordering more soon.
You got some great skills my friend. Love looking at your sleeving work. Best of the best man...
P.S. I know this is strange, can you post a pic of your heatgun? You using a metal shroud at the end of your gun as well to keep the heat constrained?
Thanks! This is the heat gun I use, nothing fancy... $20 at Home Depot

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4019/...d3913915_b.jpg
No concentration adapter; to ensure the sleeve doesn't melt, I put my thumb and index finger right up next to the heatshrink - if my fingers start to burn, I know I'm missing the heatshrink.
Hope that helps lol :D
Can you give any tips on how to get them all perfectly straight and cut to exactly the same length? I've done my whole psu and its come out awesome, I've uber happy with it, but the heatshrink is nowhere near straight across (its varied, but I think it looks cool).
Sure, but it might not be the answer you want to hear. ;)
To cut them to the same length, I have a piece of Styrofoam with a cutout (length 0.5"). The heatshrink is then pressed into the cutout, and scissors do their job.
Just make sure the sleeve is exactly the same distance from the end of the pin, then secure it in place with self-closing tweezers or fingers. Put the heatshrink over the sleeve and pin. Tilt the wire slightly downwards, so that the end of the heatshrink rests before the two fins on the pin. Then shrink away. :)
If the distance from the end of the exposed heatshrink to the end of the sleeve is too long, then take an exacto knife and cut away a small ring. If the HS is too short, cut it off and start again. :)
That is absolutely the coolest idea I've heard for heatshrink cutting. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll definetly have to try that. Thanks again for your tips. You're an artist man...
Thanks again for posting the heat gun. Amazing how you achieve what you do. I got a similiar one from Home Depot. It's a Milwaukee. lol. Thanks again for posting the picture
crys1s_gam3r ftw :D
Hello. It registered in XS for the first time.
The sleeve of MDPC is too highest.:up:
Quick Question
Was wondering if its ok for me to use one of my PCIE 6 pin cables from my old CM Real Power PSU into my Decathlon PSU as its cable is on an 8pin PCIE as well which I won't need right now.
I'm guessing its the same cables used?
Thanks
Wow, great guide.. I will be attempting this in the near future, bookmarked.
ok I have a question. I have the corsair 950TX non modular. how will I single sleave the molex and sata cables?? the rest are easy due to them being straight wires but the molex and sata are multi headed wires making it seem impossible to sinlge sleave them. yes cry1s_gam3r FTW!! cant wait m8 that sleave should be in any day now huh?? cannot wait. I got some other tripple weave non see through sleave to do my fan wires and extensions with as I want them to look different and stand out a bit.
Hey Cry1s_Gam3r,
Your tips were great. The biggest thing was inserting the wire into the molex connector right after heatshrinking. The heatshrink inserted into the molex with a little effort and BAM!!! My 8-pin motherboard plug turned out great! Thanks again for the help. I appreciate it.
For those people who are using "white sleeving", What tape do you use to tape your wire and is there any site that shows how to do the tape method?
Yes, also apply it lengthwise if you use it.
I'm just wondering if the tape will eventually subdue and start disforming the sleeve in some way?
No, a very well stretched sleeve is way stronger than tape.
Happy to help. :) Now post some pics! ;)
As Nils said, apply it lengthwise. It's very important that you stretch it, otherwise it will not be sticky enough. I generally cut it about 2 inches shorter than the cable, and then stretch the rest. Then I press the top of the tape onto the wire, and roll the rest on.
Here's a picture of what it looks like. It's not 100% aligned, but the look is what I wanted to achieve. Thanks Crys1s for the tip of inserting right when it's still warm/hot as it's still applyable... You see that you can see the black and yellow a little seeping through the white. That's okay to be honest because when it's in the case and a "white LED" strip is applied it really whitens up the white sleeve which produces a more of a solid white. The taping method would be the end all be all, but damn! that's a lot of work! lol...
http://www.3dchipset.com/images/8pin.jpg
Heatshrink looks very good :)
There is much more potential in the sleeve. It will close 100% and become absolutely non-seethrough if you stretch it lengthwise correctly. Don't get lazy because of tape :D
