So your telling me that my Rampage Extreme is a POS? If yes, I kinda believe that.
Hmmm, is that sarcasm or what? You have decent clocks for x48, but it's no secret that UD3P is king of the hill when it comes to 45nm quads.
Incidentally, I'm parting ways with my Q9650, UD3P, and 8GBs of G.Skills F2-7200CL4D. I've successfully primed them at 8 x 525, and 8.5 x 520. PM me if interested.
Edit: 8.5 x 520 with 8Gbs is my 24/7; just to give those interested an idea about stability.
@ zucker.. well well welcome to the ep45+q9650 godness :toast:
ep45-dq6
ep45-extreme
ep45-ud3p
+ thermalright ifx14 = 4.5ghz guaranteed
catch? no less than a 1000watt psu @ 12.5v
850watt @ 12.4 is not good enough.. at least not for a gtx285 @ 810/1620/1512 air/stock cooled @ heavy loads and q9650 @ 4.5
soon ill have about 10x ep45s and none ofem have let me down @ 4.5ghz.. except ep45t-extreme.. no ddr3/psu/q9650/settings/air cooler satisfies that beeotch
Are you sure its your PSU? Because Im having some problems to get my Q9650 stable at 4ghz+. Running only on a Zalman 600Watt with 4*16 = 64A on the 12V rails.
12V line = 12.56V idle and 12.49V load.
Because I get instant crash in 3dmark2006, while its prime + linpack stable.
well if you/anyone else want more info just search napalmv5 in this thread..
im sorry/i apologize but please dont ask/pm me about psu anything thanks
i made a covenant against talking about psu anymore.. looks like i broke it ahhh!! got to renew it
NapalmV5, thanks to you i could make 5GHz with Q9650:toast:
your welcome/thanks/welcome to the 5ghz q9650 club :toast:
glad more of you took advantage of my blabbing :)
This 5 GHz q9650 club.. the efforts in taming the heat this thing spits out at load.. very nice.
I have an interesting time air-cooling this chip's 4 Ghz prime95 runs. :)
I suppose real overclocking begins with real cooling, hunh? :)
XmX
As i said before I run my Q9650 at 4428mhz now (492x9) @ 1.4v on a 620w PSU which is only doing 12.03v on the 12v rail
On a rampage extreme too ;)
Just bumped it one nudge to 1.4v from spec in sig
EDIT: From what everyone is saying in this thread it sounds like I am EXTREMELY lucky to have this clock, on this mobo, with this PSU :p:
After a lot of effort I got my system stable @ 4000 (445*9)
PLL = 1.50
VTT = 1.34
VCore = 1.40 (LLC disabled, load = 1.28V).
Mem @ 1068 5-5-5-18 2.1V
Rest on AUTO.
- System is prime blend 8h stable
- Linpack 50 runs stable
- Memtest 8 hour stable
However, 3Dmark06 gives an instant crash and also 3Dmark01 crashes after 2 runs.
How to overcome these errors, more MCH? MCH at auto = 1.20
Anyone have any templates I can use for getting past 3.0Ghz on my EVGA 750i FTW?
I can post at 3.6Ghz, but I keep BSOD'ing or getting core errors on OCCT.
I set my BIOS to 1600FSB and Vcore to 1.28, trying 1.3v now. Everything else on the BIOS Voltages are set to AUTO and I have my RAM synced to my FSB.
System specs:
Motherboard: EVGA 750i FTW
CPU Cooler: ZEROtherm Nirvana NV120
RAM: 4GB OCZ ReaperX
Video Cards: Nvidia GTX 260's in SLI
Monitor: Acer P243W 24"

^ get an ep45 if you want to really oc your q9650
and watercooled.. thats lucky ?
if you guys want lucky.. heres lucky: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=206237 4.8ghz - all air cooled
if id want to watercool.. 4.8ghz fully stable easy peasy :yepp:
I like SLI, it does generate too much heat, but resale value of my GTX 260's are too low now.
I would get that board in a heartbeat if I didn't run SLI' but I went the gaming power route I guess.
I've upped my Vcore all the way up to 1.3125 which will be the furthest I will go, and it still fails OCCT. This makes no sense at all! I'm peaking the 70C mark too.
I just want to hit the magical 3.6Ghz.
I was able to go from 2.4Ghz to 3.0Ghz on my old Q6600 w/ upping the Vcore a notch and ran rock stable. I do the same here I Blue Screen... wtf.
Nice nice nice !!!
Not sure what to tell you with that 750i there. and why is 1.31 your limit. that is stupid. When Intel says the limit for vcore is 1.36 and that is just them being EXTRA Cautious. when really we can run these Q9650's at 1.4v all day!
Also nas, I think part of your problem is that ghetto Nirvana cooler, you have one of the best s775 CPU's on the market. that was a pretty penny to buy, yet you have a $25.99 cooler on it. I'd suggest you get a TRUE, or a S-1283, or a Cooler Master V8 on that thing. and then you'll be better. OCCT fails with anything over 62c. (That was OCCT's Default when I installed it on my system). so that could be why.
my 750i was only able to take my Q6700 to 3.66 Ghz. but my 750i got my Q9650 to 3.8 Ghz my FIRST time. and 4.0 Ghz was just a few voltage clicks higher. I've done 3DMark06 runs at 4.3 Ghz also. but not stable. but then I've never went over 1.38 on vcore either.. but that is because I live in a desert and didn't have water. but now I'm running water, and I change my voltage all the time. :)
Also, I was wondering if everyone here on this thread would post there current 24/7 vcore for there Q9650's. Also post your Max vcore if you'd like. but what I'm looking for is a list of 24/7 vcore's that people have run, and possibly for how long. I think these Q9650's have a vcore limit close to 1.5v just like the Q6600's and just like Nehalem, since i7 recommended vcore limit is 1.5v and they are made using the same 45nm High-K chips as Yorkfield and other 45nm chips.
So ya, can you guys post your 24/7 vcore on your Q9650's please. I'll go first.
I've been running 1.33 in BIOS, 1.312v CPU-Z at 4.0 Ghz for about 7 months now.
Sorry for Double post!
^ 24/7: believe it or not 4.6ghz on air/thermalright ifx14/ep45-extreme :yepp:
and no such thing as 1.5vcore limit :)
heres how fast q9650 is @ 4.6
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/9786/safarij.png
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/7976/chrome.png
I'm not saying 1.5v is the limit.. I'm saying that is Intel's recommended limit. These chips have NO limit. it's as high as the user wants or dares.
what is the highest 24/7 vcore you used Napalm for longer than a month or 2.. Your saying your 24/7 is 4.6 Ghz... awesome. at what vcore??
oh and nice to see you around here again. I owe my 4.3 Ghz clocks to you for ur help and good info.. Thanks Man!
ive been running these voltages since last year

whos got the balls to run that? :)
so many inquire about vcore yet only so few got the balls!

I feel i can do more than 5004Hz, but VTT prevents me from it:upset:
right.. i fully understand the q.. look guys i wont talk about psu anymore/anylonger and you can add temps/cooling to that
this thread/forum have drained all my nerves of/for that..
all the info on temps/cooling/psu/voltages/you name it is thruout the thread..
no one has to believe my claims.. but ive been proven time and time again.. and like ive said before.. my q9650s are nothing special others have better q9650 than i do
if the amationed ^ vcore/vtt + why @ post #1628 + everyone else that have contributed.. some a lot of their work/time (Jor3lBR) to the thread is not satisfactory enough.. well for goodness sake just get an ep45+q9650 and find out for yourselves already!
I read some reviews on the Nirvana, thats why I got it. They were pretty close to the TRUE as far as temps went. I am considering either going water, or getting one of those CoolIT systems. to get this proc up to safer temps.
Getting a little (ocky these days huh Napalm.. haha jk jk. I'm not baggin, you totally have the right. You can do some crazy stuff with CPU's. but you are (ocky. lol.
I believe ur claims, people that are in this thread lately napalm were not around when you posted all that info, so they don't know.. 65 pages takes a long ass time. I understand your sick of answering questions.. but some people are new to this thread with the latest prices of this wonderful chip. I want to sell my 1.21 VID Q6600 and get a spare Q9650..
Also, My board (crappy like you all say) only can go up to 1.45 VTT voltage. Sadness I know. I think a newer BIOS revision can go higher. but I'm not sure. but I'll crank my vcore this week and see how it goes. even though my ambients are high these days now it's getting 100F outside.
oh and nas, the nirvana may be close to the TRUE, but when you get into high overclocking area's like 3.6 Ghz + like your trying to do.. the TRUE will always win, not to mention you can slap a better fan on there and really kill other coolers.
Win by how much? I see these coolers cost $60+ and the black one on frozenCPU looks sweet for $70. I don't know if it would be worth the difference in temps or not or put the money towards a WC setup? And I would assume these coolers + two scythe fans for best results? I hope I'll get around 6C+ better performance?
Here at around 80F at 1.25V my temps are 46,46,46,49 IDLE. Load it'll peak 58C-ish.
thanks for the response btw!
Jab-tech has the Ultra120 Extreme for $51.99. Pretty good price.
http://www.jab-tech.com/Thermalright...P-pr-4388.html
nas.. those temps of 46 46 46 49 on idle.. are those at stock CPU speeds? or overclocked. my room during the winter gets cold, but during the summer I keep the AC around 78F just to keep the AC bill down. at stock speeds my CPU sat around 30c.. and overclocked it was around 38c If I remember right, but now I'm under water, and at 4.0 Ghz and my temps are around 28-31c idle.. even now it's getting up to 78F in my house.
if your temps are 46-49c at stock speeds, those are terrible temps and you should try a reseat, what thermal paste did you use? I think you'd get a good increase using the TRUE..
I am currently at 3.4Ghz w/ 1.25V in the BIOS. I've already reseated twice and my ambients are about 80 - 85F and same results spread, and with a line across the cores. The thermal paste I use is AS5.
I will pick up that TRUE. Can you recommend a good LED fan to use with them? Scythe are good, but no LED's.
Yes, Sir!
Okay, probably last question. There is probably a dedicated topic for this but...
Prolimatech Megahalems or TRUE 120? Only because I hear the TRUE only dominate when lapped... i don't feel like lapping...
I don't know much about the Megahalem.. the TRUE is tried and trusted by thousands. buy one used lapped. You usually can find them on enthusiasts web sites for sale pretty often.. I have one lapped, but I'm keeping her for a rainy day.
Also nas, you said you used AS5. a line across the cores. how big was that line? like from one side to the other. and how fat was it.. if so that is to much.. with thermal paste, even on these Quads. you're ok with using a slightly smaller than a Pea sized DOT, right in the middle of the CPU. then when you add the cooler, twist each side a little at a time so it adds pressure evenly. that is best way. a line across it all is probably to much. and to much actually traps the heat in. Also AS5 is no longer the best TIM. it's been beat out by a good 2-3c by MX-2, ICD7, or OCZ Freeze. I personally use MX-2. that will also help with a few degree's.
Over in the air cooling section there is a thread where someone, I forget who, said that the Megahalems needs lapping too. I don't know how badly. I wouldn't run my TRUE without a good lapping, the base was BAD. If you really dont want to lap you cooler and I can't blame you because it's a pain in the *** you might want to look into that Xigmaek (or however it's spelled) dark knight. Ask around in the air cooling section.
Was just about to buy the TRUE until I saw this...
http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/product.php?id=ODM3
For my case anyways. I may consider putting the money towards WC'ing only because I can mount the RAD internally now. It'll cost me $300 though... want to learn.
I should probably start another topic about this though.
yes you should start another topic about this. also the 1200 is a big case, you could easily get a nice radiator and put it vertical in the drive bay's. I've seen many people do that on there 1200's and even in the 900. it will work. there is plenty of room.
Personally, I'd spend the $51 dollars and get the TRUE.. add a nice fan to it. Overclock your Q9650 to where you want it.. and then slowly learn more about water-cooling, and wait for that 200mm RAD to be released, and actually used, and or reviewed to see if it's any good. if so, get it.. but I'd rather not.. or wait and get a water loop, either way. I'd get the true because it's just a great cooler. you can use it while you learn, and build your water loop. (That is what I did) and I'm saving it, because there will come a time where you want to go back to air, or you'll need to upgrade, want a new CPU block, your pump dies, something. and you'll need a air cooler and wish you had something like the true so you could still use you high, nice clocks..
Personally, I give Antec a B+ for trying. lol. but until that is released. I'd not bet on it at ALL.. not only do we know nothing about the type of rad, how well it handles heat, how big it is in comparison to ur regular dual, and triple rad's. but ANY rad on the market. ANY, other then maybe the PA series, and the Feser Rad's. ANY other RAD needs fast, high RPM, CFM heavy fans to blow through the rad. I'm sorry but the 200mm fan on the antec may be a nice fan, but it runs very slow.. what 900rpm. it moves 100CFM+ of air only because of it's size, there is no way it pushes hard enough to be a good fan to use on a radiator.
I could be wrong, but I just don't see that fan being strong enough for a radiator, unless they pulled some magic on that 200mm rad.
Either way, good luck. you might want to start a water thread! (in Liquid Cooling section of course)
ur welcome.. good luck with ur overclocking.
On another note, when I had a single GTX 260 and a hx520. I was told a better, bigger PSU would be a good idea. and that it would help with overclocking.. So I got one. the 750w Quad I use now.. But then I added another GTX 260. I am now wondering if I am close to the same area as I was before, and I just don't have enough solid PSU power to help with my overclocks.
The reason I say this is because after I got the better PSU, but before I got the second 260. I was able to boot at speeds of 4.275 Ghz, and be stable enough for some Benchies, and I loaded at 4.3 Ghz but wasn't stable.. I tried last night to OC my CPU, and I went to vcore's that I've not done in the past, thinking I'd go over my 4.3 Ghz personal best.. and I could not even load at 4.3 Ghz.. Not even with 1.42v and I did it with less before. So this makes me wonder if it's PSU related now that I'm running SLI, (Oh and Water cooling) So I'm now running SLI, and Water on the same PSU..
Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know. Just thought I'd post and see what you guys say.. Maybe I should just get a 1000w PSU.
I need help getting my my Q9650 to 4.2GHz. Every time i try it locks up 10sec into post and if it gets past boot it doesn't load windows. Running 4.00GHz is fine but i want to try for higher clocks.
What are your max clocks on a the hx520? Because Im running into some PSU issues as well (at least I think). Anything over 4ghz is just unstable. But I want to make sure its the PSU before I buy something else.
Running a Zalman ZM-600HP with 4*16A rails and a GTX285. Prime/Memtest/Linx stable, yet Crysis/3dmark06 = instant crash.
you're probably ok with a 600w psu.. although I'm not sure how good of PSU's Zalman make.. Maybe you could upgrade to a PCP&C or a Silverstone or something. but I don't know. I'm not the best with the PSU info, that is why I asked in the thread also.. ya know!
Thats right, what an awesome program the OCCT test. My PSU passed it. I was really scared, as it pulled a continuous 550Watts for 1 hour out of the socket . But it passed, so not bad for a 600watt PSU right? So how on earth could it then reboot at only 350watts of load?
My overclock was 12 hour prime blend stable, multiple hours of linpack and intel burn test, as well as memtest 8 hours. Weird man.
But after a lot of messing around, I found out that both the PCI1 and PCI2 connector of the Zalman ZM600-HP are connected to the same rail as the CPU. So when my CPU was clocked to anything above 3.4ghz, the system would reboot when loading 3dmark or crysis warhead as it could not provide enough power to my GTX285 (while the power led was showing normal operation ).
The solution is simple: Use the dedicated PCI1 power line for your GFX, and use a HDD power line for the PCI2. Then combine 2 molex of the HDD line into one by using the 2 molex to 6 pin adapter (supplied with your graphics card) That did the trick :) Apperantly it can now draw power from a less loaded line and remain stable
So anyone with a GTX280/285/295 or Any other heavy GFX can use this trick to remain stable. The PSU can handle much more than you think, no need for a replacement yet
So YESS im now aiming for 4.2Ghz:up:
Anyone got 550+ fsb with this cpu on x48? I can get 520 but I don't want to waste my time under LN if this is chipset limit.
RE is the board. I can tweak the board, just want to know if it's been done. I saw mention of 530fsb on Rampage formula. A 10 multi on this would be nice.
This chip does best on the ep45 and like boards. I've seen people say they couldn't get much out of x48 boards with this Chip.. Get an ep45, a UD3P board and this chip will really really shine!
(That is good advice, i SHOULD take it myself and get a ep45, and a GTX295 instead of my 260's and 750i) I'd probably get a higher clock, and better performance)
After a few months of working with my chip and ram, this is what I have settled on. I had to run 2.0D strap because no matter what I did the 2.4B strap ended up being total garbage.

OCCT and Prime95 stable.
Hello Fellow members. I just bought HD Camcorder and in desperate need to accelerate rending times. I have Abit IP35 PRO motherboard currently with E8400 OC to 3.6ghz. How does Q9650 OC/perform on this motherboard? Can anyone comment? Thank you, im so ready to pull the trigger but need to know what clocks people are getting with this motherboard since i can't afford another motherboard at the moment. Also if people who use Vegas pro, are you seeing a good difference in performance? Thank you!

here is my temps and voltages on idle.
i would like to lower my vcore and also my temps, maintaining by this clock speed.
any suggestions for my bio settings???
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/8812/tempake.jpg
Sounds like a GPU issue to me.
Can you run Furmark alone without it crashing? If so, can you run Furmark AND P95, Linx, or IBT at the same time? If you can run both of those at the same time, I doubt its a PSU issue.
I also doubt the guy with the 750W PSU is limited either. Water doesnt take up but 10-25W depending on the pump and fans are shhhhh.
so which would be better? the ep45-extreme or the ud3p? also on the ud3p when using 2 video cards (non crossfire) dose the lanes stay at 16x and 8x or do they both drop to 8x?
Regards Andrew
I don't know about ep45-extreme .... but for ud3p they both get to work in 8x mode .... also ud3p has Load Line Calibration in bios ... ep45-extreme doesn't so unless u feel confortable about volt moding the board for vdrop I suggest u to buy ud3p (or ud3r if u don't need crossfire) because from what I've seen oc's the quads same as the extreme, if not even better
Jorelb3r and radaja and zucker also could give their opinion because they had lot of fun with quad on ud3p and/or ep45-extreme
i've so far only played with e8400 and ud3p (4.5GHZ so far ... and like it big times)
this is just my personal opinion
hope it helps
i just ordered the ud3p  hoping to have it in the next few days! is there a guide around or should i read thru the thread again?
Andrew
Testing with the new water setup.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...Untitled1a.jpg
I believe u will be verry happy with the UD3P :D ... u can anytime ask on this thread for templates :P .... but reading thru the thread is also a good starting point.
Good luck with it. I'm waiting for u to post some results once u have it and start testing :).
i got the board:up: man i cannot believe how cold everything is in my case now, such a big difference. I've currently got my watercooling on it as well, while i was at it i fitted a new swiftech gtz (had a gtx), i've got a few problems (i'm sure i will have many more) coming from DFI im a little lost on what setting is what, but i think im managing. i have everything set at default, i have set the voltages to normal, and disabled all the speedstep stuff, i have manually set my ram volts to 2.1. load windows and run prime95 small FFT's and i dosnt last any longer than 1 min before the cores start dropping out. unless i can come across a "quick" 4ghz bios settings, looks like i'll be playing with this board for some time. Not overley impressed yet except everything is cooler, but i'll give it some time. I'm also planning to do the PSU mod next week.
Regards Andrew

There some settings here too to get you started. But some of the voltage is quite high.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=206096
priming at 4.4ghz right now @ 1.376 vcore (490x9), im loving it, in 10 mins:up::up::up::up: the dfi x48 took me like over a month to get stabe at 4ghz.:D:D:D
Andrew
edit, primed failed after 17min on one core then another went after 20min. which setting is for the gtl's?
thats great to hear.you'll soon understand all the settings once you familiarize yourself with the the board and chip.theres lots to read here on this board, like the thread Sparda pointed out.
the gtl's are cpu ref and mch ref(nb ref)
Remember on this board your mch ref tracks your vtt voltage not the mch voltage like it should. So if you change vtt or mch voltage a couple steps apart you may have to readjust the mch reference. This is what I used for 4.35, my chip is a low vid so you may or may not be able to use my vcore. And for the psu mod, I dont bite on that one, I was using an 850 rosewill for a long time and had no problems with going up to 5ghz or stablity.

What seems to be the FSB limit on the P5Q deluxe? I have a Q9650 on order from a friend through another site. And with my Q9450, I just cant get the P5Q dx to boot past 493Mhz no matter what. Any thoughts?
For mine its was about 500 bootable, the highest I ever got it was 507 with setfsb.
I love this chip, I currently own one upgrading from a E8500 and its excellent. I've successfully overclocked it to 4Ghz, no need for a Core i7. Here is my proof of overclock:
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=514253
I want to ask if someone have a Q9650 with this batch L826B006 , what I can expect from it.
Sorry for my language .
^ its not so much the cpu.. get the right mobo and even the worse q9650 can be taken to 4.5ghz
ep45/q9650: 570+ bootable  :)
Anyone else that is serious? LOL
serious? just look at all WRs :shakes:
:)
I did not ask about a board I do not own. I know that board is better. Thank you for reaffirming. :shakes:
Lol.
first of all i was jk with you..
second why: "Anyone else that is serious?"
reaffirm? yeah some of you.. over and over
Thats really not it. Im working with what I have. :)
I know you are pulling my chain. ;)
ok this is where im at, i have these settings, seems to be stable, ran linpak for 20 runs, fine for 3dmark and game play, but fails prime small fft's in 17 mins. i have had it at 500x9, but even more unstable, wont pass linpak and fails prime straight up, dose easytune 6 actually work? i have also check with a dmm and the voltage readings are a little off in cpuz and easytube 6.

Yes, ET6 works I use it all the time. What VID is your chip? Try this out, you may not even need this much vtt and mch but try it first.

Nice work.. I think I might be thinking about doing what you said Napalm. with getting a EP45 or the UD3P. and selling my 260's for the new Single PBC GTX295. and trying that setup instead.. get rid of this NF200 :banana::banana::banana: chip I have.
Also I didn't know there was 1.2875 VID Q9650's. That is sad. I was hoping they wouldn't get that high. but looks like it still clocks well...... at 1.7v that is!
edit* Napalm. what is areca1231??
xguntherc,the areca1231 is a sataII raid controller.
something like this(could find a link to the exact model)
