Nearly everything is better than that :P
Yeah the alu-block sucks, but the new stock copper-cooler isn't that bad. I use one of those to OC my 3000+ 50% over stock ;) Really doesn't matter if it's singlecore at that speed when that computer is supposed to do nothing more than being online :)
Hi guys,
I still on air cooling but as the weather gets colder things geting better.
3102Mhz @1.5v,i can't do much at that speed(bencmarking,e.t.c.) because temps jump up to 70+°C but is a start.

so what would be a good air cooling solution for an overclocked opty?
p.s. this is the stock cooler that comes with opterons. it is supposed to be quite good, from what i have read...

It's quite ok but compared to high end aircooling not that good .. i'd say middleclass

Watercooled...
Try it with 2GB of RAM. Don't stress your IMC for the vali ;)
spookie what do you use to cool your beast?
@Peter Burg
Is this CPU still sold in Hungary (or where do you getit)
Opteron 170 LCBQE 0722RPAW
At this moment i have found an Opti 175 with stepping LCB9E 0652WPMW.
Seems that it would do the job (2.8-3.0) but your step seems to be one of the best lately. Also i have seen very good cpus here that are of year 07.
Can someone confirm this also?I cannot easily find any Optis in Europe from a shop except e-bay.
Hey,
Yes, the LCBQE steppings (0715, 0722) are very good, but 0728 sucks, i could only manage 2,6@1.35V.

The problem is, that the "hype" is over, 2 weeks ago nearly everybode had the opteron 170 in stock, but now they're sold out. There were nearly only 07XX steppings. They go very well!
LCB9E is also very good.
As you see 07 is not always good. 0728 sucked, but the other ones go very well!
Sorry for getting back so late. Yes the XP-90 is a lot better than the stock, especially considering that I have a 120mm fan on there. My cooling setup rivals a Big Typhoon, even though it's a lot smaller.
Anyways, I'm idling right at 30*C(hit down to 29* too) right now, load temps can go up mid 40's. I'm giving you my core0 temps, core1 is about 4-5*C hotter. When I finally get around to it, I will delid this thing, I've seen very good improvement results from that a lone.
*note this is at 2.8ghz w/ 1.3volts. I know this chip is capable of much higher clocks but it gets too hot and keeps freezing up on me. After I take the lid off, hopefully I'll be running 2.9ghz+ 24/7 stable.
Outstanding overclock Spookie.. you should be proud.
I've never gotten mine that high, it dropped out just over 270 MHz and I didn't need the extra speed running a 180 Opty so I didn't experiment. You might have better RAM than me - I know they changed chips somewhere in the middle of production without changing the product coding. Might not be a bad idea to push the 2x512 a little farther, though. I've got a 165 running with 2x512 that could benefit from better RAM speed. When my SETI race is over (1900 GMT today) I'll give it a go and get back to you. ;)
BTW - I recently purchased some of this nice RAM for $70!! :D Great stuff but I haven't figured out the timings to OC it yet. It went to 285 on stock timings (2.5-4-4-8/1T) then BSOD. 3-4-4-8 didn't help :( it's very strange RAM - maybe 3-5-5-10 or something is needed. I put it together during the race and wasn't willing to experiment with it until after the race ...
My Ram is 2 X 1GB sticks.I asked Ram Guy at Corsair forums what IC they use long time ago and his answer was "They are based on Infineon,-5 Rev C, 64M X 8",i don't know what really means,i can't get a lot of informations about it.
Actually never expected to go that high, that is why i am trying to compare it with someone's else Ram.
Thanks a lot.

ok, so i finally got my opty 170. as i have previously mentioned it is LCBQE 0722RPBW stepping. it's supposed to be a good stepping, so i'm beginning my overclocking odyssey...
i have two questions here...
1.which temperature should i consider valid, the CPU temp, or the cores temp? i'm using everest to monitor the temps and voltages.
2.what is the maximum opteron 170 temp? i know there was a post with maximum temps, i just can't seem to find it.
thanks!
ive run past 80c, but 60, +/- 5c is probably a more sensible limit.
i used coretemp (the application) so i dunno about everest. but i found that coretemp and speedfan would read the same (average of 2 cores) when looking at the "core" reading. i assume everest will be the same.
good luck
Everest is reading the same temperatures like CoreTemp. And it's also monitoring everything else. And has built in performance benches. And stress test. And... ;)
So, 80 C for the cores is ok? I've just started a few weeks ago ocing my 4200+, now with 257HT the cores are 52 and 58 C, the CPU at 47C.
I agree! Keep it <= 60°C on core temp ...
Id keep it lower then 56 underload and around 38-42 idle thats my personal preference for drawing the line.. my intel 630 melted awhile back. :D
my first impressions of my opty 170 are great. i have reached 2800MHz on 1.3V no probs (1.35 is default), just lowered the HTT and mem divider, upped the clock and here i am.
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/845...tempru0.th.jpg
the screenshot shows core temps after 20mins Orthos, but they are +-2C constant. if i understood things right, my core temps shouldn't be higher than the TCaseMax temp which is 59C for my CPU???? is this true???
also i was planning on replacing the stock cooler, with something better cause in the summer my core temps will definitely rise 5-10C. so what would you recommend? i was planning on getting either Hyper TX or TX2, so what do you think, which is better?
to clarify, i ment i have been to 80c and survived - (thats why i decapped it. stock was 80c, lapped 70c decapped 50c...) i recomended 55-65 max under load.
my understanding is that tcase max is the maximum temperature for the case, not the cores themselves. cooler is better tho.
2800 on 1.3v is nice good job :)
i think it will go more than 2.8 on 1.3V, but i don't wanna experiment until i get a better cooler. tx or tx2 what do you recommend?
