ASus returned my board in a locked state- buuut after researching this problem I see that ASUS boards have this common problem, ever since dual channel RAM.
I found a way to force the MB back to life- Pull ALL the RAM and boot- The MB THEN throws error beeps, turn off, place 1 stick back in, and reboot, I had to add the RAM one DIMM at a time.
Do you think the MB is losing it's ability to see the RAM? weird- oh well I'm back up, Oh- not the Power supply.

Mine died after a couple of days. I contacted Holland Asus (as that was the number provided by ANT online) and they promised to send me an RMA form immediately. A few days later after nothing happened, the same guy said he had actually forgotten about sending me the email, and this time he did send an RMA number. I filled it out including VISA card info just in case I decide to pull a fast one on them, but nothing. I have called back the Holland number and now it seems that they have an answering service that deals with non server motherboard issues. The email address where I got the RMA forms simply do not reply to my several emails. I am almost giving up on this. Anyone have any ideas how I can RMA this board and get one that works?
Interesting there ZIO, maybe pulling the ram resets something.
If we have another board die we'll have to get someone to try that.
Spiro, the way we are being treated is simply unacceptable. I think its time to go higher... i'm going to see if I can rustle some contacts up but feel free to try yourself as well.

Every Asus I've owned has died an early death. I'll never buy Asus. None of what I am reading here surprises me.

Intel originally published the mechanical specification for dual-socket 771 pin motherboards, available here:

Note that it is called a Design Guide and not a standard. But as a practical matter, any manufacturer (like Asus or SM) who doesn't follow the recomended form factor leaves themselves open to criticism of being non-standard. This type of thing can sometimes be the deathknell of a product. So this Design Guide has become a "defacto" standard for 771 mobos.
On page 36 of the Design Guide there is a drawing entitled "Figure A-11. LGA 771 Socket Motherboard Footprint (Sheet 7 of 7)". It shows the exact orientation of the two sockets, including their center-to-center spacing.
Now all of us who have built up systems have had some difficulty finding and selecting our coolers, (except for you Water Bugs) because of the overly tight spacing. Let's face it, for every different 771 cooler available there are probably 50 available for the 775 socket. But we can't easily use those 775 coolers because TWO won't fit. This restrictive situation makes the build process far more difficult than it really needs to be.
So fast-forward a couple of years and Intel decides to build an "enthusiast" level dual-771 motherboard. They will call it the Skulltrail, a very catchy name. And what do they do about the aforementioned spacing problem? They violate their own published mechanical specification. Incredible!:mad:
Some would call this a "dirty trick". But Intel can get away with it because they are a monopoly. But ultinmately, the consumer gets to "vote with his wallet" and no one has to buy the Skulltrail. But the increased center-to-center socket spacing certainly does give the board some additional appeal.
I have no doubt that the Skulltrail is a good board, at least from the technical standpoint. But I personally would never buy one because it's just TOO BIG! From my viewpoint, smaller is better.
They call these things PERSONAL COMPUTERS for very good reason, because we each get to choose. Hence, there is room in the market for many choices.

Things sure had change allot here. Read up on all the posts to get up todate. Numerous motherboards death and some very unhappy customers. This thread had not seen many new posts either. this was use to be the hang out place.
My computer had not been boot up in six months and had been upgraded physically. Anyway, I needs help from the experts to restore an image from using Acronis Image 2009. My computer had a Raid 0 with 4 SSD setup using the on board raid controller that Acronis was not able to see. The ESB2E ICH southbridge may not be supported by Acronis True Image for home use. Maybe the business version could work?
Just wanna to know if your guys had any better solutions
Welcome - great to see someone from Asus finally acknowledging the issues with the Z7S.
If you have read this thread (partially) I won't need to do much explaining, basically these things crap out way too early when loaded full-time. While this can happen with individual boards, it certainly shouldn't with most of them, which is what happened here.
Being one of the first people to buy this board retail I am now on my 3rd Z7S WS, go figure :rolleyes:
What I would like so see resolved (besides the mysterious death syndrome) is the bios situation. You just can't use the Vcore adjustment setting in Bios properly, either to undervolt or to overvolt the CPUs. Every time you change Vcore from auto to any given value, it will reset the bios unless using a very specific combination of settings. Then you get it to boot ONCE with the desired Vcore, BUT - as soon as you reboot or shut down, the CMOS is shot again. :shakes:

The level of frustration and anger of us Z7S owners in here is pretty high.

Has anyone out there had a problem where the Ram heats up to around 75deg after about 30 seconds. The machine tries to boot gets half way through loading windows, dies and repeats the process.

You sure it's the memory? FBDIMM should run fairly stable up until ~95C then it starts to throttle but still runs.
It has only just started happening, its been ok for about 6 months, if i check the bios the memory temperature is highlighted in red, once it gets hot it shuts down and wont reboot,
this is the lastest of a whole series of problems with this board:shakes:
im not 100% sure, the memory temp in the bios is in red figures when the machine shuts down and wont boot again, if its running the temp shows in blue! but everything on the board except for the cpu seems very hot
Not to interrupt the conversation but add to the subject. I had 6 4gb fbdimm with OCZ XTC Cooler on top but two of my sticks is running over 80c. The others are running in the high 60's. Does it indicate that I have defective rams? These two rams are sitting in the two middle slots. Anyway, I had taken them out and my system is not giving me any artifact anymor re.
One other thing, when I attempt to over clock I get artifact. I am suspecting is not my memory as I just had change them out. My system might hit a brick wall due to my pair of L5420's or need a more beef up power supply? Any advise? I just want my system to be able to handle 1600FSB.
I had found the solution to my Acronis problem already. I guess none of your guys use acronis here. :D
I use a 120mm fan to cool my FB-DIMM's, anything less is not enough.

how can you strap a 120mm to the memory, as I can not find any possible way of doing that. May if you can show with some kind of picture.
What is your temperature on your if fbdimm. I wonder if a 4gb stick does run hotter due to using higher density memory?
Hair ties, zip-ties, rubber bands. Clip the fan to the tabs that hold the ram in.
The produced heat will depend on what the controller chipset of the FB-DIMM is. Older chipsets on 333mhz memory was less efficient. Newer ones are better but still use a lot. My FB-DIMM's run approximately 40-60c in 20-30c ambients.
I just used the Asus fan bracket, replaced the 70mm with a 80mm and used glue to attach another 92mm fan also cooling my northbridge.
My temps are at 25C room temp, 55C.

One question, what did you do to get up to 3.0GHZ. I was not able to push up 400FSB. Do I have to up my volt on my L5420? When I run Everest stress test at 400FSB, it would fail right away. Normal setting is ok.

Had the same issue, with me it was the memory. I had Kingston (fully compatible according to Asus).
Bought some other mem from jcool.
Now I get up to 429 FSB i.s.o. 396 before with the Kingston mem.
No special settings required, just a slight increase of the Vcore :p:.
Are we going to get a new BIOS soon?
I have Kingston pc2-6400 ECC ram and I'm running @436 FSB :shrug: I have Active cooling on the FB-DIMMS tho.

As you can see it shows slot 5 as 2048MBs Even tho the CPUZ validation page lists slot-5 as 127MBs

That looks like a VRM cooler allignment issue, mine had the same issue when I got it back from RMA, I had to reallign it, because they had bent the heat pipe and caused a missallignment of the VRM cooler. It detaches from the VRM chips easily if the heat pipe is bent even a tiny bit.
Two sticks on my board went up in smoke (died) 9 mos after firing up, I can't say that kingston's RAM is worth the cheap price- My mom says- You get what you pay for. Next time, no kingston for me. I was running large copper cooling sinks with heat pipes, and dual 80mm fans blowing over the top.
I have since upgraded my northbridge heatsink to a forced induction tower and have had NO problems with my board.

I went to water so I could swap CPUs easily (in 30 seconds), and ebcause it was my plan all along. otehrwise I would have stuck with the Thermalrights.
Looks like I won't be able to do any oc till I get my ram temp down to a cool 55C. These frigquent high density FBdimm is sure a pain. My last resort was to order a side panel with a 250mm fan to keep the system cool. Let see if it help.

Does it matter if the snoop filter be enable? Subject on the snoop filter around the internet suggested to have it turn on. Here at this forum, Jcool recommend to have it turn off.
Since Asus had updated the Z7S bios to .501, should we revisit this feauture.

I haven't tried it since, but knowing Asus I don't think they fixed it. You are welcome to test performance of course, but I'd expect it to still be horrible with SF enabled.
Hi all, I’ve been a long time reader of these forums, but just joined since I’ve never had anything to say post-worthy until now. It took me 2 days, but I’ve read the entire thread since the beginning. (whew!) :wth: I found this thread after doing a Google search on Z7S, which I bought a few days ago (currently waiting on shipment from Amazon). I wanted a moderately future proof upgrade to my Q6600/680i system, so I did some research, chose the Z7S over the Skulltrail, then I saw this thread. Anyway- this is what I’ve purchased:
1 x Asus Z7S
2 x Harpertown E5405’s (2.0Ghz, using stock coolers)
4 x Supertalent 4Gb FB-DIMM’s (16Gb) (what is better, Hynix chips, or Samsung chips?)
2 x 60GB OCZ Vertex SSD’s in RAID 0 (for OS)
2 x Arctic Cooling ram heatsinks w/cooler
These are what components I already have from the Q6600/680i build, and plan on using:
Silverstone Strider 850W modular PSU (EPS)
XFX nVidia 8800GTX 768Mb PCI-e Video card
150Gb WD Raptor HDD
Cooler Master CM Media 280 HTPC Case
I really am not into crunching, and don’t plan on overclocking. I just really wanted to build a machine that would be able to do pretty much anything I wanted, quickly. The Q6600/680i build was pretty good, but was frustratingly slow when un-RARing large 1080p MKV files. (I guess “slow” is a relative term)
My computer/HTPC setup is in the living room, in the entertainment center. Display is my 47” LCD TV, and input is through a Bluetooth Logitech Dinovo edge keyboard and wireless MX Revolution mouse 10 feet from the screen, from my favorite spot on the couch:

I routinely stream 1080p movies from my 2TB RAID5 fileserver, play games at 1080p res (Crysis, Bioshock, Fallout 3) ,download movies, and sometimes encode them to x264 and do a little video editing. I think this Z7S build is the right hardware at this time, but I ordered it all, then read the latter half of this thread.
I know all of you are OC’ing your Harpers, trying to get every last clock cycle out of them for WCG and Boinc, but for my uses, do you think (no or maybe mild OC) if I flash the 501 BIOS I will be alright for day to day use? Or do you believe the Z7S is just a ticking time bomb and I should sell it and use a different board? I would like to thank you all for your very informative discussion in this thread which has opened my eyes regarding octo-core workstations.
Well I'm afraid 8*2Ghz isn't much these days.. a single Core i7 920 D0 at 4Ghz will probably stomp your setup for what you want to use it for (gaming, encoding) and you wouldn't run the risk of it suddenly failing without notice.
If you haven't bought anything yet, don't. Get an i7 on a decent motherboard (DFI, Gigabyte, NOT Asus :p: ) with 12GB of DDR3-1600, it will be faster overall.
If you can return what you bought, do it. If you can't, well... try your luck. But at stock 2Ghz you won't be having much fun with gaming. You see, 99% of all PC games are poorly optimized for multiple cores, all they care about is core speed (which you don't really have at 2Ghz). So your gonna have to try and OC if you want gaming performance. Depending on your CPUs' stepping, FSB 420 to 440 should be attainable. Note that you must improve northbridge cooling in order to properly overclock (you can add a small fan to the NB sink if you don't feel comfortable replacing it). Also don't forget to add a fan to blow on the rams (with or without OC) as these run hot as hell.
This thread gives the wrong impression on Harpertown systems IMO. They're not a viable choice if you're buying the parts brand new.
@ Jcool, you're so very right. Snootch, dude, awesome rig there buddy, but what on earth were you thinking getting 2Ghz harpertowns when 2Ghz Nehalems are the same price ??!!

Ugh, :brick: I was under the impression during my research that the E5405 Harpertown was equivalent (400Mhz slower) to my current Q6600, and I would perform a slight OC if I needed to. I bought them with the idea upgrade to QX9775's later down the road once prices come down. I already bought all the parts unfortunately before I saw this thread. :( Wouldn't gaming be mostly influenced by the GPU? Again, I didn't go the dual CPU route specifically for gaming, just as a machine that would do everything better than my Q660/680i setup does now.

Yes, I do like to play games, but it is not my #1 priority. As my Q6600 sits now with it's single 8800GTX, I am satisfied with it's performance in playing Crysis. If I have to give up SLI/Crossifre support & OC capability to get multi-core multi-thread power for encoding, then so be it. I won't lose any sleep over it. Again, a big thanks to you all for steering me in the right direction! I'll post in the right section illustrating my build when I get all the parts.
I traded out my OCZ XTC Memory Cooler with version 2 of the same. What would be the best ram cooler replacement for the FBDimm them self.
I was thinking of the thermalright hr-07, but it seem like it is only made for standard memory.

I think they would do a great job of cooling off the FB-DIMMS. The reason I chose them was because I saw a youtube video of a guy building a Z7S build, and this is what he was using, so they must fit FB-DIMMS. I really don't think there is a physical size difference between DDR2/DDR3 and FB-DIMM.
The AMB chip does all the communication for the DIMMs with the NB, it is sort of a miniature IMC. It's also what produces all the heat on those sticks. If you use thick thermal pads on the rams and just a tiny drop of thermal compound on the AMB it should work, that's what I did with the Rambocks anyways. The PCB sizes are pretty much identical to DDR1/2/3

So pretty much I can use any standard aftermarket ram cooler such as the HR-07 and use the method that you mention.
However, I see your ram cooler use screws to hold itself together, where the HR-07 is one whole piece and a slide on to the ram it self. Will that cause any issue?

Yeah, it likely won't work because the total height of the Dimm with AMB chip + socket is probably too much for those Thermalrights. Maybe with some bending but no promises...

Well, no idea really.. I haven't touched my ram in over a year now (except to remove it and re-seat it in another mobo when Z7S #2 died), and the subject of FB-DDR2 is long past for me with the new generation using standard DDR3 (thankfully). Unfortunately you probably can't buy the ram sinks I used outside of Germany, but there has to be some similar product out there. I just don't think the Thermalrights are flexible enough for FBdimm...
