Forward: official GIGA 965P-S3/DS3/DS4/DQ6 beta BIOS

Loaded F9 for DS3 and working fine like the last few for me.

Very happy GB just released a F6 now for the 965G-DS3!! Works just like the F9 DS3 version. Still am limited to about 320Mhz on FSB before SATA drops out (known OC limitation of 965G having on-board video). Otherwise working fine for me.

Just updated bios of my DQ6. Now with DQ6 and E6400 i can only reach FSB 405 MHz. Anything more ( 406 MHz +) and there is a constant power-up and power-down loop. Previously FSB 440 MHz wasn't a problem without upping the chipset voltage. So F8 is very bad for me.

I might agree with you - but MadMikeSS has an S3 that he flashed to F8 and had the EXACT same problems!! Reverting to another BIOS remedied it for him. I have an OCZ 520 Watt PurePower PSU with adjustable rails. Mike is using a different PSU.

You know what PSU I'm using. ;) OCZ PowerStream 600W.

dnottis, from what we were talking about the other day, I think that you were correct about the vdimm. F7 had been perfectly fine for me through a couple of reboots and doing stuff, then I shut down the computer completely and restarted and voila, cool booting and oc reset. So I upped the vdimm from 2.1 to 2.2 and it held my OC on the next restart after saving the bios. If it's truly an issue with vdimm not being correct and floating then jumping it a little should help out. If I knew where to check on the board I would put a DMM on the vdimm to see what it's putting out and how it's fluctuating. For now I'm still running the same OC with +0.1v extra on vdimm and seem to be fine. Incidentally, with F6 I never had the bios reset on me ever with this OC with 2.1vdimm setting. So they messed around with something between then and now. Oh well, I'll be keeping an eye on it.

Sometimes the PCI Express Link drops from 16x to 1x. Any1 know what might cause this? DS4 F7 BIOS

Excellent, doesn't those numbers kind of confirm my '01 compare bench @ 3-5% lower fps in system tests using S3 F7 BIOS ( = DS3 F9 BIOS ) instead of S3 F6 ( = DS3 F7 BIOS )?

damn. ever since f9, I haven't been able to do 4:5 at 400 anymore. Even tried relaxing timings but no dice.

Damn 400fsb and 4:5 just doesn't look good anymore. I tried again and got it to post but it'd bsod windows right away.

I did try 460fsb with turbo pcie and turbo ram, if those even still do anything up here (I thought turbo for ram just tried to put it in lower strap?)

check the motherboard mods section it shows where the check points are.

never forget that even if the PC is turned off, as long as the power supply is plugged into your wall and turned on, then the motherboard is getting fully juiced.
the vdimm, cpu, pci bus etc is fully juiced just like if you had it turned on.

Mike the vdimm check point is the Coil Pack directly above/below the ram slots. it sits directly at the end of the PCI-E slot. (just about at the end of your video card, just stick the meter there and twist it a little bit there is a plastic film on the coils to protect them, once the needle of the DMM probe pierces that it will read fully.

Anyways, the DS3 is no longer in my possession!!

Bit of a update

Just to recap, I could never O/C past 450FSB on the S3-F6 Bios or DS3-F8* Bios (in fact only 445FSB or lower 100% stable).

Flashing with S3-F7 I am now at 472 FSB(3.3 gig) and 100% stable. Ran over 4 hours in Orthos so far (tested with a few high end games also)


I have now also compared the S3-F6 bios and S3-F7 bios in "Company of Heroes and "Rainbow six Vegas" using save games to ensure exact replication and fraps. Also tested at low resolutions and detail to ensure the video card is not the bottleneck.

There is no frame rate difference between these two bios for "me" with CPU at 3.0 gig (as the F6 can't do 3.3 gig had to set lower).


So for "me" at least the 3D performance is identical between S3-F6 and S3-f7.

I know my story sounds let's say f*ing unbelievable. Mainly because i cannot tell what is the difference between rebooting my system under XP and Vista...
I know that soft and hard reset differ, but these ones seemed to be identical.
And it IS 100% the OS. Was using 2, with XP was ok, but the time i tried Vista after the reboot there was a cold boot.

Bios ver F7... It may have sth to do with bios settings but i didn't like Vista that much to check.

I must say i was pretty excited when i got DS3 few days after the première and when producing the FAQ, but now, months after it i'd like to get rock stable system with a decent o/c. I consider 400x7 not that great. :)

Anyway :) F8 bios sux for me. I couldn't set the o/c i had with F7 and the system was somehow unstable in general. I ended up reseting the bios by the jumper :) Will try F9 probably tomorrow.

ok, you win. removing fans helped for short term but cold boot is back. going back to f7 with 400x8. how could they mess up the stability that bad. notice that f7 is slow but stable and f8 began fast and unstable. f8 is when they started with the fancy showing of the spd values and other things. forget that garbage and make it stable!

considering nothing has been improved since F6 why dont you guys just go back to F6 hell even F4..

seems like all these new bios's are just screwing up everyones systems.

The big problem is with a thread like this is, some people know how to O/C well and others are a tad clueless and blame "only" the bios (no question previous bioses have had issues for sure).

I suggest putting all O/C details including voltages (esp.. vcore,G)MCH, and ram) in your signature so we can all comment and help each other based on facts given rather than random stabbing in the dark.

I was on F4 and so far(the key words) no reboots and higher stable oc. Don't know about others, only mine.:D

iceblade I think F7b is the best for me with fsb470 where other bios is giving me a big headache eventho with the same settings, it just show errors at orthos Large(small alwaz stable with enough vcore)... F6 is the only bios that i can boot at fsb480 but not stable... I bet my ram is holding me back...

i've also the "cold boot" problem whit my ds3. I've an antec phantom 500 psu.
bingo13 have found the same problem whit another antec psu...

The solution i've found it's to switsch the psu off from behind, wait about 10 second, and then the system starts. This happens also whit the PC at default. Once started the system it's rocksolid and I can reboot whitout problem.
I've tried all the bios but none solve the problem... now there is a new ds3 v2 and i think to know why... :(

I wouldn't say so :) I cannot boot >420 and the max stable is 405 :) Sth is still holding me back, either vga or mem... I've tried all Bios settings. Didn't try another psu.
My CPU works /worked/ downclocked @ 2.8Ghz and with fsb420 boots@def VCore. The stability problem lies somewhere else... ;/

and small OT: I'm thinking of replacing my vga - the fan is far too noisy :) Maybe then i'll try some more o/c...
After the Christmas the prices should go down rapidly ;)

What i know is : No special knownlege to get average overclock these days . A little luck with the CPU and some guys act like the new king of banana kingdoom .For further ovclk , the problem is when bioses begun to focus a specific brand of memory which is mainstream , for no reason ... D9 for example . My Geil ram at the time i bought them in U.K., were the less expensive that could run at 1100mhz at 5-5-5 but , but by current status i agree i made a BAD choice ... happily they didn't jump

Are you sure you NEED +.3? Almost everyone I know can get by with +.1 on the MCH & FSB up to 450+, some needed more voltage to get close to 500FSB. At 400 your MCH should have very little stress on it, b/c the higher strap has just been set.

My board does up to 473FSB with +.1v

F9 on my DS3 has been fine. But then again I have had virtually no problems through the life of the board (besides like F1-F3 bioses = weaker overclocks). Its all about tweaking one thing at a time and finding out which settings your ram / board / cpu work with.

Then again I don't have a massive overclock, but I'm happy enough with it.
