msi 790 fx-gd70 thread

I ham having problems getting my 1055T to post anywhere about 3710MHz and can not figure out why. using the 1.A bios but I have a feeling that this bios was not truly meant for this cpu and was hacked together to make it work. Thus why I can not get any higher. I am currently sitting at 3.5GHz on the cpu just fine as to keep all settings of the memory, northbridge, and Hypertransport at stock levels. i am at 1.44v on the cpu. Really wish the bios handled stepping up the voltage like my old MA-790FXT-UD5P with a menu that poped up with choices like the multiplier did but it read out for voltages in .05v increments.

don´t boot ur pc with 1.44v cpu if turbo mode is enabled!!
as i see ur using 1.A, so turbomode is definetly enabled, this will push 1.61v thru ur cpu when turbo kicks in.
better use the buggy 1.B0 bios to disable turbo mode, or leave ur cpu at stock volts and change the turbo multi to 19 or something.

lets see, you are now at 3710mhz so that would be 265HTT with turbo up to 4372mhz, anything more than that would not allow you to boot because your turbo speed would be too high for such a low vcore. remember that turbo = default vcore + 0.1v so if you're setting it at 1.44v then during turbo vcore raises it to 1.544v for a 4.4~4.5Ghz

Right now im abit frustraited that cool and quite will not stay off even though its disabled in the bios.

i feel the otherway around, i think it's finally great to have cool and quiet running with an overclocked phenom II and it helps a lot on saving power and cooling the chip on idle, previously with a C2 or C3 we cannot do this

Im using the x6 and i have had a 1 or 2 crashes because cool and quite was on. But I finally tricked it into being off (that was a doozy). To be honest I believe that the 1.A (1.10) bios was truly hacked together to make these X6s work. After confirming that the cool and quite was off I had little time to turn off turbo. At least its clocked at 3.5GHz 24/7 like I want it to be now that C&Q is correctly detected as Disabled. Need True bios support for this cpu on this mobo. I also believe that because this bios is not fully in support of this cpu and its just to where it works, it is what is limiting my OC.

hey thanks crazy! i just experienced (actually last thursday) this with my 790FX-GD70, priming at 4.2 at 1.575v and right up to 30 mins of full load, my pc shutdown itself and never recovered. i blamed my brand new hx850 psu to have failed but now i think i need to check on my mobo too. i wish it's dead so i can get the CHIV :D btw, i was using the 1.b0 bios, i guess i was the first one to have used it and it lasted for about 3 hours :shakes:

so is the x6 pulling to much amps then that overheats the pwms if using high voltage and that in turn kills the NB since they didnt put proper cooling on it

im not so sure if its the x6 pulling too much or if the bios are screwed up & not handling voltages correctly... id guess the latter

How did you get cnq to turn off

that´s not true... turbo voltage is default vcore + 0.17v
and if u change default vcore, it still adds 0.17v (if turbo vcore is the same on all x6 cpus). i saw that on my x6 when i had turbo on and changed vcore to 1.45v. the voltage spiked to 1.62v when turbo kicked in.

btw.. 1.57v for 4.2ghz is way too much... these cpus need less voltage than c3 965 cpus. i can prime 4.1ghz for hours on 1.47v without problems.

If that was pointed to me and it was referring to Cool and quite then if you have Overdrive that green or green red dot in the corner is C&Q control (But does not seem able to set it correctly all the time). Cool and Quite is off when the dot is Green red.

you might wanna try a few other bios before you conclude with one, i'm sure you're getting that turbo vcore on a buggy 1b0 bios (that i shared)

and yeah, i know about how low a vcore thuban needs but my chip is a dud, no chip is ever the same :rolleyes:


EDIT: i just confirmed my mobo died, seems it was really a buggy bios! maybe i'll be going for an 890fxa-gd70 since it's about $200 here rather than the crosshair iv which is a staggering $300!

You want the Crosshair IV Extreme dont you ridney or were you going for the formula which is only $230 at newegg.

I did flash the new bios today. I installed XP Pro SP3 32-bit and then tested a little. The bios disabling feature for turbo core and C-n-Q appear to work, at least for the little bit if testing I did. The X15 NB multi worked and the ram 1:4 divider worked.:)

I did try wPrime 1024 in this same series of tests but by the end of the test only cores #4 and #5 were still running the bench test?:shrug:

Most of the system spec. is in the SS except the cooling. It’s ambient temperature water cooling (for the CPU only). The room temperature was 70F +/- (21C) so the water was very close to being the same temperature.

The cooling system consists of the pieces listed below.

Geo Metro (small car) radiator 169 sq. INS. With factory 12v fan
2 X Swiftech MCP655 pumps, one to feed the radiator and one from the radiator to feed the coolant reservoir.
1 X 120 GPH 120v pond pump (self priming) in the coolant reservoir to feed the CPU water block.
Swiftech Apogee XT water block using a homegrown fabricated adaptor to mount the water block to the AMD processor.
Reservoir containing 4 gallons of distilled water mixed with water wetter.

great results oldtimer! post more :up: maybe there still is a problem with cnq on your run with wprime, i have experienced that with 1b0 bios during 3d06 cpu test and it ran only with 3 cores at default clocks and 3 cores at x4 multi

Thanks ridney, Yeah, I may try some 3D06 in XP today. I don't think the processor is getting too hot maybe its the MB's power section but I'm not sure?:shrug:

I ran a few more bench tests today all under chilled water on the CPU. I really think that turbo core and C-n-Q are disabled. So far I’d have to say good job by the people that worked on this bios at least for finding a way to disable turbo core and C-n-Q.:up: Thuban and this new bios put a little life back in this thing.:)

Below are a few 3D tests in Vista 32-bit. These are the first runs after installing the OS. I think the process may complete these three tests at a little higher clock but not Vantage as it wouldn’t run the CPU tests even at this clock. I may try to find what clocks Vantage will run to completion tomorrow?

good to know it's working for you oldtimer! that's a massive 3d06 score, only a few more points and a few more tries to break 30k ;)

i tested 1c2 bios and found out that on my 1055T i can clock IMC up to 2880 with less volts (1.35v) compared to 1b0 which needs 1.475v, which is a good thing, but i also noticed that i needed more juice to keep my cores stable. using the same bios settings i was running with 1b0, i can no longer boot with turbo on and with it turned off it was still unstable. I also noticed that they are loosening timings with ram settings at auto and when oc'd also needed more volts to keep it stable. well, that's just my opinion and non-scientific observation on a 3 hour test, your results may differ.

I flashed my 790fx-gd70 to 1c2 in preparation for a future Thuban and it seems to have hosed my board.
I had it running perfectly with 1.10b2 and a Sargas (Sempron 140) in there as a stand-in for my dead x4 635.

The flash process appeared to be successful (using the MSI Forum Flash Tool), but after I powered down
and reset the CMOS with the button, all I got at boot was the dreaded FF. Anyone had this problem with
1c2 yet? I'm also having trouble getting bios recovery to work, even though it seems that the boot block
should still be intact.

Did I screw up my BIOS or did I update to a BIOS that simply does not support Sargas for some reason?
I don't have any other CPUs available for testing at the moment (aside from my dead 635), but if BIOS
recovery is what I have to do then I can go down that road, provided I can get my board to cooperate.

Are you using the ami bios recovery method?

I'm using (or going to be using) the USB stick recovery method described by Bas here:

Since this method does not involve renaming the BIOS file to AMIBOOT.ROM (I think,
it is not clear whether or not the use of a USB stick for recovery requires that filename),
I'll have to figure out which file it's going to want during recovery. My board shipped
with 1.7 so my guess is it's going to want that one. I have yet to get any video
signals even when hitting ctrl + home to force BIOS recovery so I'm either flying
blind, not using a ps/2 keyboard as I should, or just not waiting long enough
after powering on with ctrl + home.

Or my bootblock is toast and the board is bricked.

keep holding ctrl+home for like a minute and see what happens...it takes around 20-30 seconds to come up...also keep both a file with the latest bios without renaming and a file with the latest bios but renamed as above..

i have two users that can reproduce the "ht sync flood error" by opening 3 or more cpu-z screens, when crossfire is enabled.
can anyone in here confirm this?

I went ahead and put 1.7 on the USB stick plus the 1.7 BIOS file renamed to AMIBOOT.ROM and held ctrl+home for a minute, but no dice. I'm not getting a video signal and I've not noticed any activity on the keyboard lights or harddrive light that would somehow indicate that BIOS recovery is going on.

I know 1.7 isn't the latest or greatest, but it was the shipping BIOS, so if it's going to look for anything, it's probably going to look for that. Either that or 1.5 perhaps . . . I might have to experiment with different BIOS files.

Any other thoughts on what I can do to remedy this situation?

I always liked this MB especially the four PCIe x16 slots at double spacing. So when the Thuban bios support became available I pulled this old GD70 out and dusted it off for a few more tests.:D

Impressive. I like how you beat the Opteron in Cinebench 11.5 with half the cores but without twice the clockspeed. Go go NB/RAM tweaking!

@drmr...well that looks like you will not be able to recover the bios...I had a similar problem once, but it was fixed by the MSI support guys. If the mobo does not come on at all, there is no way you can flash the bios...

Did you try buying a new bios chip and installing it yourself? I see them for the GD70 on ebay for around 11$ USD. Might be faster than RMA.

The BIOS chip is, to my knowledge, soldered onto the board. I do not currently have the means to remove the current chip and solder a new one into place. It's a shame the chips aren't easier to swap out.

Yup...this one is soldered..so that may not be the best way to do it as its going to kill your warranty.

it's quite some time i'm reading you oc-maniacs and here i am asking some questions that would neccessary need a lot of experience with this board.....it's my first MSI and i have always run into Asrock or Asus bioses since now but i don't understand only a few sides of this board.....here is the spec of my new gaming system:

Enermax Modu 82+ 625W
555 C3
2x2GB Patriot Viper 1600 CL7 1,8v (is the XPM spec, but i keep them at 1333 Cl8 1,5V)
Ati 5770 1GB and so on....this is in a HTPC case so not so "windy"!

I'm stucked at: 3,8ghz a 1,37V (to stay large, but even at 1,35V it is ok with a 1hour Linx run...max tep 54°C) and 2400 NB..........

RAM for now i don't spend time because it is very annoying me that i cannot push NB to 2800........what about your NB settings for the tensions in the bios?for now i have 1.9 bios but i'm thinking to go to the 1.C.....

Another thing i don't understand is the ACC in this board........i unlocked my 555 to B55 and it was ok, did not linxed it but made a run of cinebench 11 and it was ok, but i have to put ACC into "auto" otherwise the system stay dual after the reset....is it possible to have a X3 instead of the X4?

u need acc on "auto" to get cores unlocked. that´s how core unlocking works.
u can always disable cores with "core control" in the bios, so u can run 1 - 4 cores, whatever u want.

Yes i guess something like that but when i went to the "core control" after the unlocking and tried to "disable" one core i think that nothing changed....but maybe i made something wrong, these evening i will be more "on the job"...

Ah after putting 1,30V for the vNB i could reach 2600 of NB.....nothing to do with 2800, i got error reporting in OCCT linpack...maybe pushing to 1,33/1,35V i can but i have to understand if it worths the famous candle...at cinebench 11 the 2600NB let me own a 0,01 don't know about the games improvements (my main target!)....

I tried even to push a little on timings, i tried 1333 888 1T at 1,55V.....but occt rebooted my system so is not very stable...i will raise to 1,65 and see if 777 is possible otherwise i will keep 898 1T....yeah, this is very poor for you but i haed to buy a elc-hapo kit, don't want to bench :)

Ah, 3,8ghz the 555 can keep at 1,35V but i can maybe slow down a little more....

I am going to run a couple of air benches on this board with a 1090T....I have read that a few broke down with the load of a 1090T...so any inputs would be great guys....am looking at around 4.1-4.2 for some air runs...

I have already changed the tim on the NB and SB, but left the PWM area the way it came with the same thermal tape.

yep i confirm.....two boards on our forum left after oc on 1090T...the voltages were not very high, think that the ampers went up to much for the "old" AM3 mobos like 790....dunno about 890 boards....

I think i have found my specs: 555@X3 3,8ghz 1,38V (i can lower maybe) and NB 2600..... ddr3 at 1,6V (maybe i can lower) 1333@888 1T (it's a shame i know :rofl: ) and the 5770 for now stay at 900/1300 because is overheating in my htpc-case-full-of-things without any case fan (i'm installing a 120 in and 2x80 out)...

I'm not running crossfire, But i am running a 5870 and i can produce the same error as you have stated. As soon as the error hits the system will restart. I can open as many CPU-Z windows as i like without a hitch. My HT-Flood errors hit when i do any hard I/O task. I have 3 systems with this hardware and only one does this. I have not had the error since flashing to the newest bio's revison.

Indeed. Had I modded the board in some other way (aside from installing the mount hardware for my nh-d14) I might go that route, but since I haven't . . .

btw how poor was the thermal interface on the sb that you replaced? Do you think the thermal interface under the PWM sink is going to be a major problem? It would be pretty disappointing if 790FX-GD70s are prone to burning out when running an overclocked X6.

Well the one below the NB and SB was really very bad.....it was like pink chewing gum...the pwm area was covered with a thick thermal tape...I am still a bit worried that it may not be sufficient....anyway just got a 1090t today, lets see if it will work.

Unfortunately the problem is not thuban specific. I played with 2 5850s in cf for a couple days, instant reboot/sync flood error when I tried to change the second cards core clock :shakes:

i cant believe how many of these have been dying w/ x6 lately, they must be having a busy RMA dep't lol

about the ht sync error, i really wish we knew more about this. i had it happen maybe 5 times total with my gd70/4870x2 & it was always when there is decent stress on the system. i wonder if it is board specific? like if you got a different gd70 madDias, with all your same hardware, would it reproduce the error every time still? very strange

I’m not sure what causes this problem. Anyway I posted quite a few bench test results in this thread earlier with the GD70 and the 1090T Thuban but I was running two 4870x2’s quadfire. No problems with the system what so ever. I had seen the sync flood error message at the end of post just before the system loaded the OS but that was very rare. I could do just about anything I wanted as far as clocking the GFX card or about anything else in the system.

Well the other day I thought I would do a little GFX upgrade to make another run a 30K in 3D06. After a lot of money spent and a few days later I had two new GFX cards sitting in a box in front of my door (5970 and a 5870).
I don’t know it the sync flood error or whatever problem causes that error is the problem with my system but there is a problem. I also don’t know if I did a clean install of the OS and everything else if that would fix it or not?

I seen the sync flood error message after the GFX upgrade. The system either drops to the desktop during a bench test, the screen goes black, it crashes then reboots or as in the above SS during 3D05 the screen goes black then sets that error message. When the message appears I can tap the Esc key and return to the desktop. Usually I get a bunch of white pixels on the screen as the bench test locks then sets the above error message.

This happens at default or mild GFX overclocks. All the above problems are with only one 5870 installed. When I install the 5970 or the 5970 and the 5870 together some bench tests such as vantage won’t even start as the system just crashes then reboots. I’m using the Corsair 1000W PSU and I don’t see it as being the problem.

All the above problems happen during the graphic part of the bench tests not the CPU tests.

I am using the latest bios on the MSI website which I flashed after first trying the GFX cards with the beta bios.

I may pull the cards and install them in the Asus Crosshair III to see if the problem still occurs.

I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the latest 1.c0 bios. With 1.b0 i could bench vantage at 4.3ghz, with 1.c0 i get the error either during gpu tests or definetly during cpu tests.
Even the new 890 gd70 shows a strange behaviour when a 5970 is installed, at least that's what dumo was experiencing.
A friend of mine has a gd70 that was a "winki edition" i guess it's another revision of the board than mine. But seeing that different people with the same setup are expierencing the same issue as me, i don't think it's worth swapping the mobo.
I hope that everyone, that is suffering from the ht sync flood error, is writing a ticket to the msi customer support. We need a new bios asap.

Ok its dead...so this board cannot handle a thuban at 4 ghz for even benchmarking. Took all of 40 minutes to die. Just saw one small spark and that was the end of it. damn that sucks dude.. its too bad they dont play well w/ x6, the gd70 gave me best results on my x4 by a mile compared to giga 890gpa-ud3h & crosshair IV formula

i even primed 4.1ghz@1.475v for over an hour and ran vantage at 4.3ghz@1.55v. i don´t know how u cooled ur pwm, but just because it has no fan on the heatsink doesn´t mean that it will run cool without ventilation. and a case fan isn´t really enough to cool the pwm heatsink.
this board can handle a thuban at 4ghz very well...

better knock on wood :p: at least 4 boards from XS have died for sure + frozen said 2 boards from his forum have died already, i think they have some power issues w/ x6 that can hopefully be fixed w/ bios updates

Yes active phase was on. Anyway my sense is that ver 1 boards may be the issue and ver 1.1 may be better specced. The VRM Heatsink was extremely hot to the touch after the shutdown. And yes I did change out the crappy bubblegum on the NB and SB and my temps on both reduced by 7-10 degrees after this.

which bios is the best ?? last one from msi 1.c or beta 1.c2 ????

i don´t know how mav2000 killed his board... i also don´t know what active phase switching is.. is that something in the "green power" bios menu? i never used those features, cause they always just gave me a no boot.

Well...is yours a version 1.1 by any chance?

APS can switch on inactive power phases depending on load. The problem is, the switching takes time, and during this time the active phases will be inevitably overloaded.

MadDias, something is wrong with your mobo is you cant enable it..

So would keeping the APS off solve this problem?

the board had issues with prime 95 with just a 4 core at 4.2..........I used prime 95 at 4.2 with no fan on PWM to bin boards for ln2.......want to guess how many got RMA'd?

On a side note we had better luck with open box boards as apparently the "bad" mosfets were changed already.

Those not having problems likely just got a "good" board which is what we were binning for........

i don´t know if it was aps that gave me a bluescreen when booting windows. but since then i never tried enabling something in the "green power" menu again.
i´m pretty sure that´s what killed mav2000´s board. why would u want green power when ur overclocking and running the system at 100%load during prime95 anyways??
my board is rev1 i guess.. the stickers on it say 010 and 10.
the x6 is running with 10w less power usage in idle than my old 965C2 without any "green power" thing enabled.

i don´t wanna guess how many boards went belly up while priming without a fan blowing on the pwm section ;)
but that´s not only a msi problem... i bet every amd board with 4+2pwm screams for mercy when u torture it without giving it fresh air.
that "open box" phenomenon is interesting... so there are really some boards leaving the factory with already borked mosfets.

Ouch man. Something to think about if/when I get the RMA return on mine.

Sorry the board fried. Hopefully the boards they're sending back as returns will be better able to handle Thubans than the boards that are out in the wild?

I have to agree about the PWM temps and the necessity of forced cooling. Using an IR thermometer, I measured temps up to 90 degrees on the PWM chips at 3.8Ghz with an X4. I put a small fan, resting on the top of the graphics card, pointed at the NB/VRM area. The temps now don't break 50, and I was able to push to 4.1Ghz. I plugged the fan into the CPU fan port so I could set it to spin up with load. I have it set to target 40 degrees on the CPU, so as soon as there is any significant load, it kicks up the speed. The lowest speed is set to 40% so its still quiet.

There is no way anyone should be overclocking an X6 without at least some cooling towards the PWM section.

I do use APS because who likes huge power bills? Any little bit helps, I'm not a fan of wasting power if the system doesn't need it. I've always found the APS on this board to work very well and doesn't seem to affect stability at all.

The whole point is to seperate the wolves from the sheep. I would not reccomend it either but good chips aren't extremely common.

For my needs I need to know the board has a rock solid PWM. This is the best way i found to determine it.

If it survives with no cooling in prime95 with a sacrificial chip ( because this board when it nukes has always taken a chip ) then I am willing to put it under ln2 with a good chip with cooling on PWM ;)

I just received a mail from msi tech support with a link to a beta bios that should solve the "ht sync flood error" when using a hd5970.

BIOS 1.1D4

Now the problem is, I still can´t open multiple cpu-z windows, after the 4th cpu-z window the system got unresponsive and rebooted.
But this time the error message was "Unknown BIOS error. Error code =9200"
I guess they just changed the error message but didn´t solve the problem...

I don't know, maybe the bad mosfets would have died anyway. Yesterday I installed 2x60mm fans on the pwm to prevent this, but tbh i don't want to risk the board and the chip.. maybe I should change to CH4 before I get my thuban (and something bad happens)..

Im going to have to get a new board because this one is crap for overclocking. Wont let me take my 1055T over 3.6 GHz and even that isnt 100% stable but 3.5GHz at stock voltage is completely stable. Im just going to get the Crosshair IV extreme when it comes out.

i was talking to MSI support and they said * Please don't overclock so much, please adjust your CPU ratio as 18/19 to check again* thats sounds weird and funny coming from MSI..i have some problems overclocking my 1090t and they said that....

received a link from msi today to a modified version of the 1.1D4 bios.
i was hoping that it would solve the stupid reboots when i open multiple cpu-z screens...
but it´s still rebooting... the only thing that changed was, that it´s not showing any error message at post this time.

edit: cpu-z 1.54.1 beta solves the reboot problem!!! would have never thought that cpu-z was the source of the error...

maddias, thanks for the bios link. it seems my 1055T can now clock cpu-nb past 2800+ stable, oc my ram and tightened up cpu vcore, but the problem i'm having right now is that it doesn't run turbo anymore. i can't boot into windows with turbo-on on this 1d4 bios

anyone flashed with the latest 1D4 bios? i am having BSODs with Canon's Digital Photo Professional or even trying to open photos, i get distorted screen and then BSOD saying there's a problem with memory management. RAM is running stock and cpu-nb at 2700, same stable settings i have running previously

all blue slots are physically 16x, if slots 1 and 4 are used then they run 16x if anything is in slots 3 or 5 then all of the 16x slots will run at 8x and slots 3 and 5 are 8x only. then slot 2 is a pci-e 1x going from the SB so it dosnt matter

Moved the card to third blue slot (PCI-E 4) and it works as x16. Next time i'll have a look in a manual before asking... :D

So I tried this 1.C bios before installing my SSD RAID-0 array.

Everything works, but now my overclock, which has been stable for months, is no longer stable.

I have been running a phenom 955 under water at 4.0Ghz @ 1.3875V. 200x20. Now that setting is not stable even up to 1.45V!

Why would that happen? I used to be able to run prime95 overnight, I could even run furmark at the same time for hours on end with no crashing. Now it crashes in the first 5 seconds of prime.
