pwn'd again :shakes:
It doesn't matter anyway as most of my piddling budget is gonna be blown on replacing the motherboard in my son's Opteron 170 rig. Why don't I replace it outright you ask? Total budget is $50. :(
My first s939 mobo, actually. An Asrock 939-SLi.
<sigh> so close!
Now if our PM will just pull the pin so I can get some election work ...
No idea. It's just talk at the minute. Plus this government is cagey enough not to call an election while half the population are still pissed off at them over internet censorship/insulation scandal/whatever.
His ideas aren't actually socialism, they are just too far removed from your normal situation to jump to in one leap like he's trying.
Our health care system, for example: I didn't have to pay for surgery or anything related to it when my appendix and I had a "falling out" about 2 years ago, but I still generally have to contribute to the cost of seeing a GP and for any medication.
That's not socialism. It's public health care.
Even I think he should be staying home rather than out showing off his slightly brown complexion all over the world, though. I've got other issues with him, but this isn't supposed to be a political thread ;)
I have the crunching fever so I am looking to build another rig just for crunching. Sossaman seems like it would be a good investment for the cost and power consumption. However, I am looking at heatsinks for the the setup. I know of the 'ABBHEATSINKS' but is there something else can be used? I was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835114092 for the heatsink. I read that socket 771 has the same layout, but I am still curious since it seems like a waste to shell out $20 for 2 aluminum heatsinks and they have expensive shipping. This heatsink from newegg (x2) would be a few bucks cheaper with shipping and it is solid copper. Just looking for alternatives. I guess I could use zip ties for some other heatsink?
Thank you
Dale
From what I understand it won't work because Sammy doesn't have an IHS, so there is a gap with other heatsinks, or something like that.
Yeah, that is what I read as well, but I am not sure why it will not work since socket A athlons didn't have an IHS and they were able to have a flat base on the heatsink. Maybe it is the uneven pressure when installing the heatsink since it uses screws...
Hm...maybe a shim would help with stability and protecting the core.

Free shipping St Patrick day.
I'm a bit tight right now, so I'll just have to wait. I might be in contact later though.
u can use these like I did:

:D
Looks interesting, what did you use to secure it?
Thanks. I'd forgotten about that pic.
Is anyone using a sausageman rig as their daily drive? How would you rate it's performance compared to a regular consumer desktop rig? (of similar vintage of course, there's no point comparing it to a full blown ST rig for example)
I have a Sossa as my backup rig (which I recently had to use for a month due to an exploded board.)
I have it running with a cheapo, passively cooled Quadro card in the PCI-E slot and it's a great daily driver. Nothing like a server board for a daily driver. It's so solid that it makes windows seem uncrashable... then again, it's running server 2003 :p:
Honestly, if the Intel BB board didn't have a huge form factor, I'd build a few systems for my friends/family and rest assured that they'd run forever. They perform mundane tasks extremely well.
Also, there's nothing like seeing two CPUs at nearly room temperature under full load with low-profile aluminum heatsinks and a single, silent 120mm fan.
Oh yeah... and it scores OVER 9,000 in 3DMark06 with a GTX260

When we lost power and were just running on the generator I used sammy as my only machine because of the low power draw.
Works just fine for anything in daily use and as said, stable little mo-fo..:D
Good to know and very encouraging, thanks guys. :)
I need some help ~ is there any windows XP intel raid driver for the SE7520BB2 mobo ~ I tried but couldn't find it online
Here's a link to the download center http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sear...rd+SE7520BB2D2
but there seems to only be an XP driver for the hardware backplane and an XP Pro 64 driver for the onboard nic, other than that I don't know.
There's more there, go to the page.
I email intel ~ received reply that there is raid driver 4 win 2003 but no driver 4 winXP
RAID drivers for the ICH5R or the SI SATA ports?
I *highly doubt there is no RAID drivers for either, esp the ICH5R.. plus if the WinServer2003 are x86 then they could very well work in XP as well
if u want to look for RAID drivers for the ICH5R for XP, try looking at a mobo with the 875P NB ;)
I just had a nice surpise at work! Received my first Sossaman unit! I'm glad I have a PSU handy, ready to try it :)
So far it works great, hooked it up to some spare hardware I have laying around in the shop and installed windows. Extra RAM you inlcuded seems to work great, it passed a few Memtest86 passes.
Now, did anyone try installing XP Pro and forcing Win Server 2003 drivers?
Lol's Mofo's- My shelf Sossaman's are still runnin on there shelf "unit" while I have 5 inches of water in the whole basement, heck maybe more but there was still plenty of clearance underneath to not worry!:D
Just imagine the floor area with water and me sloshing around in the water getting the pump running while the whole time the rigs are still running:up:

Wow, if only those Xeon's were cheaper, I found Sossaman boards on e-bay for $46 ($19 plus $16 shipping).
Ebay link
They can be had on fleabay RELATIVELY cheaply if you watch closely, but there are some etailers out there still trying to charge $400+ US for them, each. Don't click "buy" without checking first.
You can get the board a bit cheaper (on shipping) if you go to centrix-intl.com (the same ebayer).
http://www.centrix-intl.com/details.asp?productid=4675
$9 vs 16
Also, I found SL8WT 2Ghz cpus on ebay for $29.50 each.
Still waiting to put it together as I was at work all day and my board and heatsinks were delivered to my apartment's office. They are closed now :(
ALERT! 2.16GHz Sossaman chip on US eBay

Well, I got my sossaman rig up and running today. It took me about 5 hours to organize my desk (for wire management of everything on my desk) and mounting the rig to the side part of my desk.
I'm going to need more outlets soon as my surge protector is filled to the max. Don't worry though, the power consumption for my system, sossaman, router, modem, printer and monitor is only 280W when I am crunching on both systems :).
Pics are added for justice. Sossaman needs more wire management...
I think I might add another sossaman to the other side as well and maybe I might used some pico PSUs to save one some space...time will tell.
Nice! Gives me some ideas, too.
Or use one PSU for both sammies... that's what I did :D
Is that an Ikea Pax???
I kid you not, that's what I have my 2 Sossamans in also. It's absolutely perfect size for the board.

Truer than you think.
I met gongo a while back.
My impressions that night were of a very smart, well spoken guy with a good heart. I won't go into details but I always ask myself one question when you think about an individual: Would I feel comfortable leaving my kids in that persons care?
Not a doubt at all when I think of him.
Just so people know - I have one of my Sossaman systems for sale (Fold3 in my sig). Dual 2GHz Sossamans, heatsinks, 2x512MB ECC DDR2-400 memory, Intel SE7520BB2 motherboard - $165 + shipping.
I'm not bent on selling this, so I'm not looking to play with pricing too much. If no interest then it'll continue keeping my other Sossaman rig company :D
Just grabbed 6 2GHz Sossaman cpu's at $29.50 each, two for D_A in down under and 4 for me..Just to have..
I just don't sleep right if I don't have enough parts in the house to build a couple Sammys..
Dang Dave how'd you pull that off? Those CPUs usually run much higher than that, like $40 a piece
Leave it up to you to find the deals :D
34 left at that price:

Holy beer that makes me wish i had cash at this moment :(
Not like i have wanted one for little tinkering (OCing the hard way) for 2 years now...
Just want to say that the seller in Movieman's ebay link has the sossamans going for $25.50 instead of $29.50.
Re-link to it: http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Xeon-Dual-...item335a0df5f9
Haha, what you going to do with them, lol.
Here, even more cheaper.
http://cgi.ebay.com/7X-Intel-Xeon-SL...item1c1187b15e
Like an Army supply depot..Ya gotta have supplies..
\Besides, for a cheap all round machine these make a hell of a system.
Low elec, decent computational power..
Beats the crap out of the entry level Dell's,etc,,
And find a LL PC62B and it's one nice looking rig..:D
Oh ya, i still have 2 sossaman rig. :D
The wording is pretty ambiguous, I'd say. If you contact the seller and they say it's for all seven then that's a hell of a deal ... but that's also the price I've seen a bunch going for each.
Yeah, yuk it up, but I've seen too many cases where wording like that just means they forgot to mark it as a multiple sale rather than a job lot. My eldest son got caught by one exactly like that.
Oh if it's really for all 7 it's a BRILLIANT deal ... pity I'm BAB again. :shakes:
Any hints on a real cheap mobo?
Those 7 sossamans are now gone..
I wonder who bought them?..:wasntme:
:yepp: but for Artem..
He wants to be the Sammy King of XS!:p:
Just wrote upgrade bay again on the 2160's they have at $388.00 each and memtioned that although the 2160's are rare they arfen't worth $388.00 each when 2000's can be bought for $20-40 each..Lets see what they say and anyone interested in a pair of them if they decide to offer at a reasonable price?
Lol...
Actually, you can mix and match running with a 2.0ghz sossaman.
For those who are going to put a new sossaman rig, Here are some products you need.

So Artemm has been visiting the Movieman mansion and now he's suddenly the Sammy king of XS ... :ROTF:

Wes got married, bought a house and I think works a lot on the road.
He got all his high end Cisco qualifications and I hope he is making money hand over fist..
Real nice kid..
Now thats just not fair or right..
You did get to touch the SR2 and I only have 4 machines running in the house..
sammy,SR2,and the two harpers.. Just 4 piddly machines..
(and the W3580 this week and then the 24 core AMD but whose counting! )
<watching the mail box REAL close>
Soon my precious, soon.
I wanted to put one of my GTX260s in the rig with my Sossaman but the cardboard box wasn't going to cut it... Got to looking at some old Antec case I had sitting here and the light went off
After a little dremel work.... :D

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...0408002039.jpg
OK, so I can't use the bottom most 5.25" bay, and the 3.5" bays are gone. So what
Case had an 80mm intake fan. Wasn't sure if that would be feeding enough for the GTX260, so.... chop chop!
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...408002039a.jpg
Result? IT FITS!
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...0408002233.jpg
Forgot to grab a pic with the GTX260 in it but yes, it fits fine and works fine. I have the hard drive mounted in the middle 5.25" bay with a pair of adapter rails. The DVD ROM is in the topmost bay.
Crude? Yes. Rough? Yes. Does it work? YES. And with the side panels on, you can't tell the difference :p:
any1 in europe willing to part from his beloved sossaman system PM me, need to build my sis a new system. If its sossaman then i think i can talk her into 24/7.
Hahahaha that intake is a mess ROFL I think we could've done better with a 2000w angle grinder
