I have this ram 4x1 corsair dominator and it works great with this board.
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820145179
my crucial run fine at 4 GB and cpu clocked to 3.8 Mhz.
The board posts, but every time the win(xp) starts, I get a message that the system has found an unknown audio device... That should be the X-Fi.
Mine is also 1.02G, I flashed into bios 0602 from the 04XX. I will try that 0505.
Are you using the Sound Blaster with the "onboard" SupremeFX or as standalone? And in which PCI slot?
Update:
Last night I did the "Make Disk" off the MB driver disk. I formatted and installed XP SP2 with those drivers. Hitting F6 then chosing the SATA Controller. There are four to chose from, a couple RAID ones, something about mobile and one that said something like SATA Controller Desktop. The install still seemed slower then my old NF3 w/ FX-60, but it was faster then before. And so far XP seems to be running fine. But I've had some other problems installing stuff. The ASUS InstALL had problems installing. And my G5failed the first time. Might be a issue, I'm not sure yet.
After xp reinstall, same :banana::banana::banana::banana: happened, X-Fi don't wan't to work:mad:
Remounting my TRUE made a world of difference to my temps!!! I knocked nearly 7*c off loaded temps just by doing this, and also lowered northbridge temps (I assume there was a deadspot...?)!

And now it's mounted like this...

Hi, thanks GAR, unfortunately I'm in the UK but is this http://www.memoryc.com/products/desc...kit/index.html the same or similar?
Chris
@ weescott
If you take your time the NB comes off rather easily, just don't pull. I took a flat head screw driver and just slowly worked the corners and it came off w/o any problems. It was definetly worth the lower temps.Quote:
To think I was 2 minutes away from attempting to take off the heatpipe from my board.
I am really glad I didn't now!
@scope666
Other than PCI-E 2.0 and better support for 45nm and DDR3, how is this a new chipset?Quote:
Probably just growing pains, it's a VERY new chipset, and the BIOS is in its infant stages. It will probably take awhile before this thing starts to shine. My old P5b Deluxe was like that when it first came out, then it became a rock.
Didn't Intel design the X38 specifically for DDR3? Didn't ASUS and other MoBo manufacturers have to force DDR2 support on the chipset? I'm wondering if all are problems are just due to poor optimization of DDR2 that can't be fixed outside of loose timmings.
looking at ya picture you seem to have another version of the driver I use, I just looked at creative webbie and it's the same driver for all the cards
http://be-en.europe.creative.com/support/downloads/download2.asp?MainCategory=209&Product=14000&dlcen tric=9756&Product_Name=X%2DFi+Fatal1ty&filetype=1& OSName=Windows+XP
click on I agree and the download should start
hope this link works otherwise meet me on messenger and I'll send it to ya ( pm me first then plz)
Thanx for Your answer. I tried that with the driver You linked me, deinstalled before all creative drivers. After that I installed that driver, perfectly done, restarted my rig, but next time when the win started, I got that "unknown audio device found" message again:mad:
I have already seen such like that the device can't answer. This makes me think, that there might be a conflict with an other device. I read in the mobo's manual, that PCI slot shares with LAN, SATA, PCIe X16 etc. In which PCI port do you use yours?
The first time I installed the parts, the card worked, but the creative applications weren't installed. I tried to install them, and since then I can't hear any noise:shakes:
Thy for your answer too, I would like to use both of the soundcards, one of them with surround headset and the other with 5.1 speaker system. I will behappy, if I had "only" noisy mic. I don't get any sound from the X-Fi
I think you are looking for trouble there Xabre ... and like in the PM I posted ya the extra apps prolly corrupted ya install, install winXP from scratch !!
OK, so after installing my 8800GT, i have been getting nothing but BSOD's............i have used the diag. tool it says its driver related....anyone else getting issues with vista 64???? here is what the bsod says
process has locked pages
when i get back into windows this is the description it gives me

try changing your pci-e frequency
I've seen another person (earlier in this thread) having a prob with an X-Fi. His problem was different than yours though. His Maximus couldn't boot with an X-Fi on the last pci slot. Maybe the two probs are connected.
In my opinion try another vga card (without a wb) so as to install X-Fi in 1st slot.
OK, so the BSOD happens mainly when i exit a game, and when i try to restart my computer..................Process_Has_locked_pages ...........i tried upping the pci-e mhz and nothing happened, i tried it on 100 and i still get the bsod...........this is crazy im starting to think i have a bad card maybe????? everytime i try to restart i get a bsod.....overclocked or stock, same thing.
seems like i have a defective card, im just going to frys to return it........will report back, probably will get the xfx card tommorow to test out.
well, a fresh GFX card will definately rule out a glitch, etc. with the MB.
Rear fan is extract. Top most fan (200mm) is extract above TRUE. Bottom mounted fan on TRUE is pushing through the TRUE and the top mounted fan on the TRUE is pulling the air through and pushing it out the 200mm extract!
It works well...
0701 bios seems to have been released on the FTP check it out! Anyone wanna test it?
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/so...ximus_Formula/
IM going to give 0701 a shot, i really want this prime 95 issue fixed, if not im going to switch boards, i have a chip that can do 3.9 stable, but im stuck at 3.7 because of this voltage issue.
OK...........prime 95 issue still not resolved.
What voltage issue do you mean ?
Still looking into my issue..........................
OK, I am highly suggesting plumbing the Fusion block into your loop if you can. Dropped NB temp from 47°C to 34°C under load. NB volts at 1.65. It also helps anything on the heatpipe lose a degree or two, my SB temp is down some too. It didn't kill my flow too bad, dropped it some, but not bad. All I had was a CPU block in the loop anyways. And the MCP655 has a lot of push power.
I don't plan on moving to water cooling just yet but for the sake of keeping my system cool, any suggestions for a very simple water cooling solution for just the NB???
Just a question. I know an okay amount about overclocking but is changing the pci-e frequency a must to maintain stability?
From what I have read, most guides say to lock in your bus frequencies at standard to avoid damaging add-on cards but I haven't read anything yet about overclocking the PCI or PCIe bus?? Any links or info would be appreciated.
Damn I had these issues when the GTS just came out only a beta driver solved my issues with games.... will look for ya GAR if I find something...
Forget 0701 and 0602 ----- 0602 loosend NB timings, and performance of the board overall according to benchmarks.
0701 they might have done something with the NB timings/board performance I cant even boot my stable settings with DRAM Static Read Enabled, or Transaction Booster Enabled and fiddled with voltages for a bit, but nothing worked....its back to 0505 for me until otherwise :)
Damn so far max fsb that I've reached is 527 dunno is my 6850 or board.
Today some ss cooling and 10.703 SuperPi 1M
Win reinstalled only with the Intel INF update driver, nothong else. After that the situation is the same:shakes: I just try the newest driver to install, that U linked too...
I will try to put the X-Fi to the another pci slot.
Can I use my VGA in the 2nd PCI-E or is that won't be an accolmplishment?
0602 fixed the 500*8 boot issue I was having with my Ballistix Tracer 1066 kit though. I will try 0701 later today possibly and see what happens as even with 0602, I was still having divider issues. Right now I am at 445*9 with my RAM at 1069, 4-4-4-12-2T and am seeing excellent performance.
Anyone with 4x1GB sticks try 0701 yet?
I'm chosing not to OC right now until I get my CPU cooler. But I've noticed with the 0401, 0505, and 0602 BIOS if I leave everything at AUTO CPU-Z tell me that my CPU is set at 333 X 6= about 2000. Where my 6750 should be 333 X 8= about 2660. Is this normal?
I haven't tried without the fusion block, but i have the same temps with it connected. 33°C idle, 36°C load on NB. Around 32°C both idle/load on SB. ~1,65v on NB.
I have a SB X-Fi Gamer card in my last PCI port and i've got no problems at all with it.
Run my Q6600 on 3,8ghz (423*9) 1,5v vcore 100% Stable
btw. Best board i've ever owned for overclocking :D
So I'm trying to decide what to do with the Maximus. I have to RMA it, not sure if I want to try another one or perhaps try another X38 (or even P35) board.
Is it normal for this board to have reboot issues? when you hit F10 to save changes from the bios, does your machine restart the way it's supposed to? Can you do reboots from Vista, Dos, etc?
Also, does Asus or Intel have a utility like nTune or uTune (abit) that allows you to tweak voltages from within Windows? I find this handy when overclocking. Get a stable OCCT run and drop the vcore down .2 volts and try again. Saves A LOT of time as opposed to rebooting EVERY time you tweak something.
Thanks in advance for any advice...
GAR do you have Vista 32 installed as well? It could possibly be the 64 bit driver for the GT being immature. If you where able to try on Vista 32 and repeat the BSOD behavior then I would start looking else where other than the driver.
@GAR
it seems like the 8800GT issue is isolated, mine runs fine but im still on the 0505 bios. Try a downgrade and keep your PCI-E locked at 100. The only problems im seeing so far is the vista restart issue and I won't upgrade my bios until that gets fixed in a release.. I have no problems with dividers or x-fi conflicts..
anybody else experiencing issues with their 8800GT?
I give up and waiting for new driver for X-Fi Fatal1ty Pro FPS, because it won't work
Xp reinstalled again, inserted just the X-Fi in PCI slot1 and VGA in PCIEx16_2(worked without any problem), but it was no use:shakes:
The mobo doesn't recognise the card at all, think it will be driver or bios matter. I wait for a while, if there is no solution, i will say goodbye to the board:rofl:
I have 1 question about my RAM.
It's Corsair XMS2 DHX 4GB: 2 X 2GB Module (DDR2).
It is rated at 1.80V
When I boot the Maximus SE for the first time, what will my RAM's voltage be set to, and is there any chance of it being too high, and actually damaging my RAM on the initial boot?
If this board does over-volt the memory by a tad (not sure that it does), when I do get control of the BIOS, what would you set it to initially?
Thanks.
Hi, 701 is a bit screwy, bios reading of cpu temp 53c when core temp reads between 38-44c...
ChrisC
CPU temp deffinately changed with 0701. Mine is also now higher than my core temps. Looks like they have tightened up the timing with this release though. Heres my Memory results. Clock speed are as shown in the screenies.
0602

0701
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...06/mem0701.jpg
where is the option to disable peci in this bios?
it doesn't show minus temps anymore
It's still there for me...
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/so...ula/MF0701.zip
EDIT: Lol...Lee was asking about the bios? Apparently he found it because the post vanished...
So wait, what do I believe for temps now? Coretemp or the board?
OK, my problem is related to the X-FI drivers in vista 64, stupid creative..................what should i do, is the onboard sound good enough?????
stupid creative, i went from returning 2 great overclocking 8800GT's to thinking its my board, all because of stupid drivers, went ahead and took apart my computer all because of this :banana::banana::banana:, F*ck creative labs, sorry for the language fellas, but this is crap support from a HUGE company like creative wich makes million a month, but cant release decent drivers for a 64 bit OS.
It's ok...you tried the slot above the pci-e?
Man Creative has had hugh driver issues ever since the X-FI came out. They are very bloated and in general I see more people with issues that not with Creative sound cards. Glad you figured out the cause. Now for a solution.
Funny noone blames Microsoft for releasing another POS OS, no issues at all here with WinXP 64, I'll never switch XP for Vista unless it gets some serious service packs...
cliffy:
Do you find Everest to be stable? When i was trying it (4.20.1170) I would get Blue Screen restarts. I stopped using it and haven't had another one yet. This was on XP Pro.
Everest 4.20.1170 works fine here ;) you think it's like that coretemp version that made several Pc's BSOD.... but my version looks totally different then Cliffy's one...
and I can confirm Cliffy's findings; with Static read control on and transaction booster off (level 0) I get way better ram scores :) than with 0505... Read and copy improved drastically, write though stayed almost the same....
Yeah i returned the BFG, but i got myself another one, XFX 8800GT, the BFG was a good overclocker, i feel bad for returning it, wish i knew this problem last night! anyway, either i can use the onboard sound or just go back to good old windows XP, or just use vista 32???
Im using the ASUS suplied PCIe 1x sound card and it sounds good to me.
I tried my x-Fi but with Vista x64 and 4 gigs of ram all I got was an ear full of static...
I started running Vista about 2% of the time in a duel boot. After some game testing I've found Vista to be superior to XP. Not in FPS but in memory managment, and in so more stable frame rates with virtually no dips below 30 FPS unless I'm running more then 2 games at the same time. Vista's S3 sleep state actually works where XP would be hit and miss 50% of the time.
I personally have almost zero issues with Vista. I only use XP for legacy hardware that doesn't have Vista drivers which is like .05% of the time now. :)
does anyone know if this is available for download yet? Does Asus have something that does this? (tweaking volts / timings from Windows)
This is supposed to work for the X38 and P35 chipsets.
http://xtreview.com/images/Intel-xmp-software-1-r.jpg
ill get my maximus none SE mobo by the day after tomorrow, and i think ill get my memory that day too, so i would like to know what BIOS to get? 505 ore the new one 701?
and is there any other thing i have to have in mind?
Check Creative's Website, there is a new X-Fi driver out today and people are cheering that it fixes most of the 64 bit and 4Gb ram bugs
i hope it works ok cuz my board arrives today and I have an X-Fi...
Ok so I cant get 0701 stable....does anyone know exactly what they changed in this release? Was it subtimings, or the way DRAM Clock twister/Static Read or Transaction booster works? because I tried alot of things and it simply would not work.. Think I will stick with 0505 and wait for actual release and see if they say anything about it.
I run like that for ages with my P5K Dlx, same with the Maximus see if you can reach the same FSB with less volt, I only need 1.32 for 400FSB with my Q6600 for 3.2Ghz that is...
anyone have a link for this bios 0701 ???
In the event that the new Creative drivers don't work, you can try the YouP-PAX drivers. Apparently these guys did the work over a year ago. Sad to see that it took so long for Creative to get their act together.
These are some hacked Chinese drivers that have been out almost a year now, and they work fine. I am using YouP-PAX-X-FI2007. Here is a link: http://www.youp-pax.org/viewthread.p...a=page%3D1
You don't have to install the whole suite to get the X-Fi working, just have it search the *.iso for the drivers and you'll be good to go.
I've having alot of problems with these board, No matter what voltages, It will not post at a "Reasonable" overclock, My normal 3.9Ghz will not load Windows under 433 or 485 and the 400mhz FSB Strap isn't working either, My memory can handle the speeds and the timings, but It won't post at all.
Also, the motherboard hangs at the IDE detection "PCIE-SATA RAID" Screen.
Anyone know why?
Are you water cooling your chipset?
The highest stable I can get with my Q6600 under phase and 0505 so far is 460 FSB on air chipset cooling...
This same chip on my BlackPearl is stable at 485 FSB ...
Consequently I ordered a few parts to build a single rad chipset cooling solution...we shall see...
Dying to fire up the Maximus...:D
http://img451.imageshack.us/img451/4421/1015863ye8.jpg
Because this is not the P35 or 965 :)
Its closer to the 975 chipset and if you want high FSB's your going to have to give it the volts. Thats the price Intel is making us pay for twin 16x slots.
Update: I just jacked my FSB Terminatioon voltage to 1.60 and now im perfectly stable at 466 FSB and 4.2ghz...more to come soon but I really dont like my voltages this high even if the new chipset is designed to take it.
NB = 1.71
FSB = 1.60
Once I go water I wont care too much but on air im concerned...
FYI - If your water cooling your SE, using the stock ROG NB cooler, report your temps in this thread please:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...=1#post2536433
So I'm trying to decide what to do with the Maximus. I have to RMA it, not sure if I want to try another one or perhaps try another X38 (or even P35) board. Are you guys happy with your boards?
Is it normal for this board to have reboot issues? when you hit F10 to save changes from the bios, does your machine restart the way it's supposed to? Can you do reboots from Vista, Dos, etc?
So since mine was funky to begin with, maybe a new board with good settings will restart normally. Anyone else have issues with reboots? Just wondering if it's worth the effort to try another one.
I did get 5 FPS higher scores in the Crysis benchmark against the 680i (at same clock speeds) Seems like if I could get it stable it would be a great board, I do like the features.
I noticed the same thing on my board. I updated the 0401 BIOS it shipped with to 0505 during assembly and noticed on reboot it hung for a good 30 seconds then came back up, booted normally. System stability is great, I have been running Q6600 B3 @ 2.88 (320x9) with uptime of 7d:10hr now on Intel stock cooler. I'll push further but I'm shopping around for air cooling for cpu, nb, sb, vga or considering a 3/8" water kit and unsure which way to go. The NB is getting hotter than the cpu sometimes so something has to be done there, leaving the waterblock without water is not an option.
I'd say if you have had weird issues from the beginning it may be worth trying out a new one. This board is a pretty sweet board when you find the correct settings. I am running 400x9 totally 100% stable. I am now working on 450x8 with the new 0701 bios since 0505 was not able to run that. I never did try with 0602, it was on here for about a day or 2 before I just upgraded to 0701 about an hour ago. If you get a new one and it is still not working correctly, I'd start looking at other hardware than the motherboard.
Maybe not its just what I am seeing so far with the 0701 bios. If the board needs that voltage under water im going to be surprised...
Ok I backed off a bit and have found that I am stable with a PC Probe II reported NB of 1.62 and FSBT of 1.66 this is at 460x9 under phase and air cooled chipset. I didnt try for a max yet and wont until my WC parts arrive later this week.
so far its running just fine with an X-Fi and the new drivers...
Confirmed, new drivers and X-FI are working good, i have my fingers crossed, i havnt shot this card yet LOL
