My FB-Dimms had been running over 90c for 8 months before I took it down to be replaced by a Q6600. It was a dual woodcrest. Perhaps, they did downclock but WCG ability wasn't effected. The whole rig was in a tight 2U chassis.Quote:

Yeah, WCG isn't really sensitive when it comes to bandwidth... Difference between dual and quadchannel is zero... BUT winrar kicks ass now :D

If I get to do Harper #2 in the same case I will go the WC route... but for now there's nothing to be gained with WC. It's not going to be quieter or faster, just heavier and more expensive ;)

WC'ing won't hurt you any. Keeping the CPUs cooler could extend their life span some ... might make the system quieter ... great for g33k value (WC'd dual socket boxen iz teh l337) ... your choice dude.
Hey Guys new to the forum, (I know, I sound like a cracker already):down:
I have been reading this thread since I bought a Z7S and had some bad luck with it. Using a single 5420 in socket 0 . Board would not post. After pulling out the ramm it would not even give basic 1 long beep, 2 short beep code for no ramm. When powered on you get one long continuous beep. Would not stop until powering down.:shrug:
I currently have the board RMA'ed, I'm impatiently waiting it's return. I have since read that Raptor 10k RPM drives are incompatible. Anyone using raptors successfully? I plan to test the processing capability of Protools (audio recording software) using this rig. Thanks ahead of time for any input:up:.
You sure you had the CPU in the right socket? What did the post LED say?
Did you plug in all the power connectors? It won't post unless you have 4 + 4 pin (1 CPU) or 8 + 4 pin (2 CPUs).
Check its manual.
Some supermicro boards require you to use socket 1 instead of 0 to fuction. That may be the case.
Tyan boards are always socket 0 for single cpu though.
I am not sure about Asus, so read the manual.
I had the 8 + 4 pin on the board. (too much for 1 cpu?) The code it was throwing was unidentifiable by asus. They said I was using an unapproved cpu, uh but we know the 5420 should be fine. Asus tech support said socket 0 was correct. I tried it in 01 just for :banana::banana::banana::banana:s and giggles. Same problem though. With the ram in the code was 04 I think. Guess I won't know crap till I get another and try again. :down: Raptor drives anyone? a good fast alternative?

I'd try out my new Velocirptor on the Z7S for you, but it was DOA. I can tell you when they give me my RMA.
Raptor compatibility on the Z7S is iffy, some have it working, some do not, it depends on the model of the Raptor and the bios of the Z7S. If you check newegg you can see some model #'s - check the ratings - you will see customer replies and asus replies in line.Quote:

The codes I got on the first one were 08, then 07, then FF then shutdown. A tap of the case would cause it to do the same again. I don't know what 04 is, but the last code before the shutdown is important. I would have RMA'd that board as well. Raptors won't prevent it from posting, you just might not have raid compatibility although 0201 was supposed to fix that, as well as the latest 3 rev. - according to asus at least. I haven't tested it yet still waiting on my new board. We shall see.
No the ASUS RAM cooler is optional and not included, nor does newegg sell it. Just get a cooler that clips on with some fans, that will keep them cool. I forget the model # I bought, but it's a coolermaster or thermaltake I believe.Quote:

I just recently got my Z7S put together and update the bios with the latest .302 bios. I cannot overclock to 3ghz using 400FSB. My CPUs are the L5420 with TWP of 50 watts. The memory are Quamida 800mhz.
Any help would be appreciated. Here is my spec if that help?

What's the default vcore of your L5420 ?
My E5420 with 1.192vcore does 3 Ghz stable but nothing more, so it's possible your cpu needs more vcore.

I will have to go home and find out. usually, I do mild ocing and never have to mess with the vcore. You think I should up the vcore to e5420 level.
You mean you set FSB to 400 but it's unstable? Try running a smaller multiplier like 7x at FSB 400 and check with prime. If you are stable, then you need a Vcore mod. Good luck with finding the right pins to insulate though, I haven't come across an appropriate howto so far...
