top work Gary
looking forward to this mate
arcticool
pls invest in a DMM
they are cheap
OK, fine. I'm sure I should learn how to do this anyway...
I just got a meter from radio shack. It was like 12 bucks.
It's got a red pin and a black pin and a dial that I can set voltages and stuff.
Now what? Presumably I set the dial to something and touch the pins somewhere. I'm a little freaked out by interacting with electricity so detailed steps would be great :)
Before you start poking around inside your motherboard I would invest in a set of probes to prevent accidental short circuiting.
You can power down your motherboard make your connections then fire up the motherboard with less of a chance of damaging sensitive electronics

Here are a couple of articles that might help you get started using the MM. The second one covers other things, but includes MM. There are others out there that you can find using Google. Hope that helps some.

Very informative links, thanks :)
Although I have to say, in the end I wussed-out and didn't manually verify.
I did try the pencil mod however and below are my results.
First let me say I tried CPU Volt Dampener on and off and found no difference at all so I think we can confirm this is broken on all vanilla boards...
Before first pencil mod:
BIOS/CPUZ Idle/CPUZ Load
1.425/1.400/1.328
CPU Spread On (interesting lower idle and slightly higher load):
1.425/1.384/1.336
1st Try Pencil Mod (CPU Spread Off):
1.425/1.400/1.344,1.352 (moved around a bit)
2nd Try Pencil Mod
1.425/1.400/1.368
3rd Try Pencil Mod
1.4375/1.416/1.416
1.45/1.432/1.432
1.4625/1.440/1.440
1.4875/1.215/1.215*
Looks like third time was the charm. Instead of scratching lines I went in circles and really filled in the top of that chip. Also had to be careful to clean off the lead dust that collected around it. Prob just being paranoid but I was afraid it would settle somewhere and short something out. BTW, my pencil didn't have a number but pretty sure it was not a #2. Its a construction pencil for writing on 2x4 wood and stuff, its thick and pretty hard but guess it worked well in the end :)
* At 1.4875 and above CPUZ just pooped out and obviously didn't work anymore. I know its not right b/c my overclocks were stable.
BTW, here are my overclocks with an E4300 (L2):
1.475V 360*9 = 3240
1.5V 365*9 = 3285
1.55V 370*9 = 3330
Not great I know but its not the board. I only got 9*333 with my DS3 board so its just not a better chip. Overall I'm happy with the OC as I think 85% for free is still pretty good ;-)
I know it has been discussed a few times (and shows my noobness), but when you see the list of Qualified Vendors for RAM on this board, do I really need to follow this??
I want to get 4GB, but according to this list, there is not many ways to do it...I need mismatched RAM to do the 4GB? Or two matched pairs? or the 4GB set all matched??
From what I have been reading, this is a great board for my next purchase this month...but I want to ensure I get the right RAM straight up...and really, I am not too worried about the cost of it either...present to myself :)
So, after all that above, what I am really asking for is a suggestion based on your current findings of 4GB of RAM for this P5K :D
I don't think the RAM list really matters. Probably just there to save their asses in writing if something goes wrong ;)
I'm running 2 x 1 GB sticks of GSkill ZX (DDR2-533) and 2 x 1 GB sticks of Kingston ValueRAM (DDR2-667). Just be sure to increase NB voltage if going to 4 sticks makes your system unstable.
I finally found a program that gives you accurate cpu voltages to 3 decimal places.
CPUz craps out at 1.40 to 1.45 volts so I've been using SpeedFan which gives you 2 decimal places but Lavalys Everest gives you 3.

Hi,
i bought this board and a Celeron 430, but now it can't boot properly? Everytime i power on the system, it shows me this screen -
http://www.abload.de/img/hmmmn03.jpg
Anyone know about that problem?
Regards
Doesn't support the celeron on this board, sorry.
Hmm, i downloaded the latest Bios now, and renamed it to P5KBASIC.ROM. Do u think it will work this way? If not i must install my old 331..
Edit: Works now, without doing anything.. :p:
After installing Windows and did soem reboots, i have the same problem again..
Did you up date the bios to at least 0414? You might be able to do it by using the cdrom as you asked previously. If not you'll need a CPU supported by your current bios. Here's the CPU support link:
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/c...l=P5K%20Deluxe
This board won't boot with just 1 stick installed! If i have the problem again, i will try my ballistix on it.
Hmm, did not tested any other cpu yet. ;)
Had problem again after flashing to 0414, thats really strange.. But the CPU is supported for sure, i already installed windows, without any problems.
Edit: Now i have a new problem.. :( Bios do not dedect keyboard on startup, that means i can not enter bios.. But if i'am into windows, the keyboard works just fine?! Crazy board..
If I were you, I'd try the ballistix and reflash the bios once more...
If the problems are not solved that way, rma the board.
I've seen like 5 P5K vanillas and none of them act spooky like yours (all with E6400 an E6600 cpu's, I have to say)
btw, my board starts just fine with one stick...
Flashed the 0414 now, using AsusUpdate. Until now i had no problems anymore.. I hope it will work now and in the future! If not, i must RMA the board. ;)
Edit: OMG, again Bad Bios Checksum... xD
I made today a P5K OC Guide, if somebody has got problems with the P35's settings I hope It would helps much :)
(thx for the pictures to dinos :D)
