Ok n00b question, so the Memory line obviously tests the memory, so the cache is strictly CPU based, or is it a combo?

Another question:
I want to put my secon 640GB caviar in Raid1 via xpertdrive, I already have the OS up etc and have heard horror stories of starting RAID now. I believe I have done this in the past with 3 Raptors in RAID5 via a controller, but I know times change. Has anyone added a second drive after the OS is installed, and if so how'd it go? I read one review of the p5q dlx and it said it worked, but I wanted to check. Thanks

Finally do you think I should go back to the 9x or 8x routes or just stick with a happy medium of 8.5. I have read up on the advantages of a high FSB, but I also want my ram decent AND most importantly I know that overall cpu speed is king.

To all the guys with Funky readouts, we had this issue before with other boards, sometimes there's a mixup with software (AI suite, CPU-Z, Lavalys Everest) when being run at the same time...Try a bios reset and see if the wacky temps still persist... If so plz flash another bios or reflash this one...

btw. i see that you measured voltages with a dmm, got a picture where i need to stick the probes to measure myself, seems the PRO doesn't have the same problems as the deluxe tho, witch is nice

Some of yours early P5Q Deluxe, P5Q-E or P5Q3 Deluxe MB can suffer a physical incompatibility with GTX260/280 VGA adapters.
If you met this problem, RMA your MB.

Just placed an other for this bad boy + E8200 + G.Skill 4GB PQ PC2 8000 and a 4850 !! =D cant wait !!

@jVIDIA i tried your settings today ... but still having problems, no luck at all with 1200Mhz on memory and 500x8 even with the following settings:

PLL: 1.6V -> 1.64V real
FSB: 1.48V -> 1.40V real (also tried higher)
NB: 1.32V -> 1.35V real (also tried higher)
vRAM: 2.22V -> 2.30V real

I disabled all the advanced CPU settings, as for the memory i set tRFC to 55, PL to 10 and even 11, disabled Spread Spectrum's and Clock Skew's @ Normal. I even upgraded a notch the CPU voltage but no luck at all, sometimes doesn't arrives to boot (never did on 1:1 trying 500x8 but yes on higher speeds, it's crazy) and sometimes it boots but when i start the Prime Blend fails within 5-10 seconds and i'm not sure what should i do next ... or if i'd stay in this BIOS as i said till memory issues are gone :shrug:

I'm still having lil issues with F@H SMP version after 9h+ folding, i'm upping some voltages up and see if that helps to finally post a 100%+ stable setup

@pmp any P5Q-Pro can be affected? or just the models you said?

Again I say I will wait until they have another solid one out even though I really am tempted to flash to a newer one ggrr...

Newer bios seemed to have solved with me the overtemp error, also a new feature in bios coming from Maximus formula II is in now...

I get the overtemp error on every bios ive tried if i have asus probe and any other monitoring program running. It goes with a reboot though

I explained it some time ago, but again. This option affects FSB signal, and it's here due to Intel recommendation.
Basically it affects OC margin for upcoming, cheap Q8200. It _may_ enhance a little typical Yorkfields/Wolfdales as well.
Optimized setting enable/disable Compatible or Performance modes depends on CPU uCode.

0803 is working great for me. Before, when using BIOS 0704 under load the CPU temp would read 128c while Real Temp would show something like 43c for each core. At idle 0704 would show a CPU temp of 45c and real temp would show 31c for each core.

Now, with 0803 it shows that the CPU Temp is 27c at idle and around 45c full load. 0803 also dropped my memory latency from 60.xns to 57.xns using the same exact settings.

pmp, the Kentsfield will have any benefit also with that new option ?

And do you think PL=7 @ 450fsb will be an utopia on the P5Q Deluxe ? :D

edit: pmp, is there any reading points for the vSB and vPCIe ?

I've upgraded to 0901.

If I compare BIOS temps with Coretemp and Realtemp,... they seem balanced, considering that the cores are always hotter then the CPU.

But for isntance Everest CPU Temp has nothing to do with BIOS Temps.

Previous owner lapped it, and was under water. Got 3.6 with 1.26v. I dont have water yet, but will be getting a swiftech h20-220 APEX GT and a new board this friday.

temp readout is borked mate , just put it on ignore... trust coretemp or realtemp for the readouts... (ofcourse a prob if you got a 45nm that has got borked sensors too)

If you're not going to throw in some quad-core chip at 6 ghz you can stay chill ;)

I'll have to measure that up jVIDIA, it required a special EK waterblock which allows for some adjustment. I am not at home right now, i will post the distance here as soon as i get there later on. Maybe someone can help meanwhile.

Just measured and it's 6,3cm. Hole to hole.

Are there some serious differences between P5Q-E and the -Deluxe version ? Other than the 8 phases that -E version has.
I think overclocking will be almost the same, if not identical, because the PCB is almost unchanged.

My cores is normal, don't pass 60ºc in full load...
yeah, my case is very small, and is fuc*** the ventilation i think...
I tried this over, and only once time the machine has a small BSOD, and restarted itself. I added a bit of tension in the northbridge and the fsb, and stopped BSOD appears, only the orthos accusing error.
I do not think it is necessary to 1.6 for the PLL, maybe a little more tension in the northbridge, I think.
any solution to reduce the temperature of my mobo?

did you try NB at 1.26 ? up pll voltage a bit this is 65nm CPU so they can handle it...

for ya ventilation try to mod the case and put in one big 20Cm fan or at least one 120mm you got the room in the sidepanel

I just organize the cables, and got an excellent temperature.

I don't want great OC's, just something simple for 24/7, so do I need the Deluxe version, or should I go for the cheaper (P5Q-E)?

Bios is about the same... dlx has backplates on the back... but for normal use the E is pretty fine mate...

Just put together my system yesterday.

I'm using BIOS 803, a Q6600 (L745A) and 2x1Gb Corsair Twinx 6400 C5 Rev. 5.1

It was very easy to boot at high fsb, got into Windows @ 510 very easily. Also had no problems with my RAID, just "ported" my previous P35 instalation to the P5Q-Dlx.

But I'm having a hard time setting my RAMs on anything diferent than 1:1 with 450 fsb.

I used to run this kit on MSI P35 with the below setings @2,2V set on BIOS.

I tried the 2 lower RAM dividers just above 1:1 (1080 and 1130 I think), left everything on auto besides this setings:

Should be doable ya settings but with a higher PL 8-9

0803 works ok for me. couldn't get it stable under same setting with 0901 tho.

Hi i'm new to the forums. I was wondering if you could help me with a problem i've got with my new Asus P5Q. Its a similar problem to what someone posted a few pages back, but I looked through and there wasn't any solution posted.

I just purchased the mobo along with a Q6600, 4GB PC2-6400C5 G.skill dual channel kit, hd4870, asus dvdrw, corsair HX520W psu. I put everything together in my case along with 2 Hard disks that I got a while back (1 250gig Seagate and a 350gig Western Digital). I turned everything on and all I got was a black screen. So my first thought was that something wasn't connected properly. So I looked and everything was so I used the "clear rtc ram" jumper thats described in the mobo manual. I then plugged everything back in and started up the machine. I got to a screen where it said something about entering setup. So I did and the bios popped up. I then went into the boot menu and changed the boot priority so that the dvd drive would be first. I then hit F10 and the computer restarted, but it came up with a black screen again. So I used the "clear rtc ram" jumper again and started the pc back up again, I again got the same screen saying something about setup and I got back into the bios. I then downloaded the updated 703 bios from the asus website. I then used the EZ flash utility to update the bios. The PC then restarted and came up with a black screen again. So I used the same jumper again and started the pc again. I let it boot up into the windows install that was on the hard disk left over from use with my old PC, started removing drivers, got prompted to restart, so I did and got the same black screen again.

I'm guessing this is a fault with the motherboard? Has anyone else had anything like this happen?

K did you alter any voltages ? did you set eg 1.9 voltage for the ram ? if it posts each time after a cmos reset some setting is not right... did you try with one dimm ?

Thx for replying. I didn't alter any voltages, just left them all at auto. I have flashed the bios to 703, which is the one I found on the asus website for the standard p5q, there wasn't a 704 version there. I just the altered voltages for the DRAM and NB but it wouldn't post after I hit F10, when the PC restarted.

did you try one dimm ? if no go try just with the other dimm... do you have another gfx card nearby ?

I just tried it with one dimm in the A1 slot (yellow one nearest the cpu) after resetting the cmos again. I then went into the bios and then exited it, windows xp then loaded up (still on hard disk), and I shut the pc down from the login screen. I then turned the power back on and it posted ok and got into the bios, I then just pressed F10 without altering anything and it restarted and wouldn't post.

I have my old 7800gt, but I can't get to it atm.

well, 400 strap can provide 1200 ram. it can do pl8 i believe. trfc has to be around 50-55 though in my case to get it to work.

Playing with skews did the trick, but I had to set all subtimings by hand.

Finally stable.
But the memories remained with little income, I am working on that now.

I think it's the only odd thing, all the memory issues on the P5Q*, even it's DDR2 or DDR3 ... i really hope a BIOS update will finally solve it ... cause i can't understand why my memories are 100&#37; stable at 1115Mhz at 2.20V and i can't run them stable on 1186 or 1200Mhz under 2.3V (as well as upping too much other voltages ... or loosening timings and PL ... or diff BIOS version's) ... Prime95 keeps failing within seconds and it's hard to understand :\

SirKeldon, I have the same problem with memory compatibility. I can get them stable on 1:1 or 5:6 divider settings, and currently using it at 1086@4.4.4.8 2.28v.
Problem is no matter what voltage, pl, twister I set them, I can't get them stable on 4:5 or 3:4 divider. Maybe it's the ratio or maybe the freqency, but I kinda feel that the board is not compatible with my memory. I'm using 2*1G Patriot ddr-2 8000+XBLK modules.

I can see why it could happen once, but not multiple times, why would it mess up the time zone after it was correctly set?

For the ram issues, you guys aware that the board overvolts already 0.08... also it's not because the rams did 1200mhz on other boards tht it will do this on P45... also thought that your rams could have degraded ? your settings are not correct, played with the skews ?

And like any new board it might be some child diseases that have to be solved... Time will tell...

I've got a problem. I'm really frustrated over this.
I was on BIOS 0706, running my system @ 3.8Ghz (475 X 8) Prime95 Stable for a week - running various operations and day-to-day use.

On Tuesday I flashed the BIOS to 0901 and immediately my Overclocking failed. No matter what I did & tried, I just couldn't get back to my 3.8Ghz. It worked fine on BIOS Defaults, but Overclocking just wouldn't work.

Last evening I Flashed down to 0803, and still the same results. I can't get back up to 3.8Ghz at all. I'm using the EXACT SAME settings that I had before - I had them jotted down in a Spreadsheet so I know I'm not missing anything. The BIOS Settings are a replica of my settings running 3.8Ghz with BIOS 0706.

How come those exact same settings won't work anymore? I don't understand this. I haven't tried going back to BIOS 0706 but I will later tonight. But my problem is - even if it does work on 0706 - does this mean I can never upgrade my BIOS again? Why?

Doesn't make any sense to me.

Any word of advice? Am I missing something?

Oh yes Leeghoofd, i know that the RAM overvolts 0.08, that's why i keep her at 2.12V on BIOS cause 2.20V is the voltage it's rated to do 1066 5-5-5-15-25, also the RAM is on the QVL ... and i highly doubt it's degraded cause it's just a week old and it's been active cooled :shrug:

Amazingly, at this voltage, my RAM was also able to boot at 1130-1185 and 1200 so i kept trying. I was able to complete almost a pass of memory test and do some benches on windows with vRAM at 2.18V (2.26V real) for 1200Mhz and was fine, even on light tasks the system ran well ... but Prime95 Blend Mode or OCCT RAM Test failed within seconds, i tried to up some other voltages to +0.1V +0.2V but same error and sometimes even worst (wasn't booting to Windows). I also tried to play with the timings, setting tRFC to 55 and loosening some other ones, setting PL to 10-11 instead of 8 ... played with CPU GTL Ref Voltage, CPU Clock Skew and NB Clock Skew but no luck at all. It's always failing when i try to stabilize 500x8 with 1200Mhz on memory ... or even on my stable 445x9 when i try 1186Mhz.

What's more surprising to me is i'm 100&#37; Prime95 Blend & F@H stable at 445x9 (4Ghz) with 1115Mhz (5-5-5-15-25 PL 8) with these tiny voltages (i had to up a notch for being F@H stable, on prime they were lower):

vRAM: 2.14V (2.22V measured with DMM)
vPLL: 1.52V (1.55V measured with DMM)
vFSB: 1.30V (1.22V measured with DMM)
vNB: 1.14V (1.17V measured with DMM)

The only skews i can't play with are the DRAM ones since i see it's only a BIOS feature for the Deluxe, maybe i was wrong trying things ... but i tried almost everything, jVIDIA also helped me to this but nothing did the trick, that's why makes me think it's a chipset and/or BIOS issue more than other thing (or maybe i'm still missing some setting, i don't rule out that since i'm still a noob on the OC world).

And yes, I know this is a so young board, and also, a younger chipset that has to be hard studied and implemented for the BIOS developer's and they're not machines, cause all the other things are working well but this, i'm patient but i'm affraid since it seems more a direct hardware issue related to P45 more than a BIOS fix. Maybe we'll have to wait for a 2nd revision of the chipset? I really hope not and still hoping a bios will fix that cause really ... i don't want to buy another board now :lol:

Can anyone give me some settings to start with overclocking my E8400?
I got it to 9x432 yesterday, stable into Windows, by just adjusting FSB and Vcore to 1.33Volt, but I want to get a lot more (I'm on air right now, but I will move to watercooling once I got my case finished...)

I read a lot about those GTL-Voltages, and that they will have to be "found" for each CPU/mainboard, but a few hints on where to start would be very nice!!

Haven't tried 0901 myself, but I found 0803 to be the same as the 07** BIOS's. Have you tried popping the battery for a few minutes?

To everybody that flashes beta biosses a general warning :

For 0901 bios : If you read pmp's reply to my post of the 0901 that was leaked and not a release by our usual source (which to me raised my eyebrows) There were still flaws in it and pmp warned us that he didn't wanted to release this bios...
Thing I noted immediately that with 0803 and 0901 compared to older biosses that I needed other setings than the 7 series to be stable... maybe the higher bandwith , decreased latency has got something to do with it... we got several flaws : HD issues & incompatability, CPU overtemp errors, seems still some rams that are limited according users...

I just test them alphas (if allowed) and I take the risk for borking my own board. Pmp is the master of bios design and we give him feedback on issues we encounter because we are all looking for best performance. I test for stability, general usage,...., but releases follow up pretty quickly ( which is nice ) and you have tounderstand it's pretty impossible to test all sorts of ram/FSB combo's... as I'm limited ofcourse by the hardware I own and ofcourse limited in time too...

Secondly beta is beta and we have to be aware that some biosses can be zero improvement for some, for others it's the next big thing... I wrecked a perfectly good striker due to a leaked alpha... it updated the firmware of my chipsets... board was never the same again afterwards... the damage was done...

For my rig, with some alterations my OC with the Wolf is still stable 500FSB @1000/1200 ram and 400/450FSB @ 1066/1081 with the QX...I'm limiting my OC's daily at 4Ghz --> 4.5 for benching... Also remember with 45nm CPU's that more voltage isn't always required and some CPU's feel better with some voltages reduced instead of raised...

Pmp is working his ass of to get this P45 under control (respect mate, if you ever visit my humble country hopefully we can have some brewskis)... believe me guys this DDR2 release is a smooth ride compared to the DDR3 variant... we can run Oc'ed, but have to limit ourselves a bit... have a look in the P5Q3 thread... if you dare :)

Updating status.

Later on, last night I had a couple reboots in 3D app with those setings.

Today the macchine didn't start, cleared Cmos, reloaded values, reflashed and nothing did it. It won't boot with same setings that worked yesterday :(

For now I think I will chill out and leave dividers alone for a while, tonight I will seek for the best bandwidth I can get with 1:1.


Leeghoofd, I respect all the hard work, it's amazing good job. I'm used to this kind of stuff and I Know this board has lots of potential. But right now, I think that those that need stability should run 1:1 and take the best out of it.

I'm really happy with this board, I can run my Q9450@3.8Ghz and it's 22h OCCT stable.

I'll revert back to 0706 today and pop out the battery you're talking about as well and see if I can get back to my old OC. I always feared beta bios' and I have a very bad feeling in the bottom of my pit that 0901 didn't savvy well with my board.

The higher the frequency on the ram the more noise there will be. P45 seems to suffer from noise a lot worse than say X48.
Now that does not mean a board can not be built that takes this into consideration, Biostar look to have a nice board that does well... BUT and I keep saying this... it, and all the other DDR2 boards do well with 2x1GB modules only on the whole.
Pretty much as soon as 2GB modules are used it starts getting hard to clock.

If noise is the issue, clock and DQ/DQS alignment will help, so playing with skews will help at higher frequencies, the issue is only so much, after that it comes down to hardware the board has been built with.

being honest, wise people looking for performance will stay X48/790i for DDR3 and X48/P35/780i for DDR2 if 4GB and up is to be used, for 2GB P45 is ok as long as you understand the limits.

@Leeghoofd I must say i had these memory "issues" (as the 500x8 issue and trying to run it on 1:1) even on 0703 (Official from ASUS site) & 0708 releases, that's why i tried 0901, i thought this could be solved with that release so i flashed ... i didn't know it was "leaked" :shrug: ... though all of this i must say all the other settings that were working on 07* series (for keeping my OC stable) are also working on 0901, at least on my P5Q-Pro.

And i know what you say that 45nm sometimes loves "lower" voltages and playing with GTL's to achieve stability, i tested it on an DFI X38 board and it was definitely true ... before it died after a bad bios flash (a beta one :lol:)

Of course everybody has limited resources, of hardware and mostly due to time, i know every CPU, every chipset and every RAM IC is different ... and they can't be tested all, but it's so strange i can keep my RAM on 1115Mhz with almost stock volts and i can't stabilize it on 70Mhz more with +0.1, it's just that, i'm not complaining ... cause of course i can "survive" with 1115Mhz instead of 1186Mhz, that's not a problem for me, i'm just sharing it cause it seems strange. And yes, i know all the problems with the P5Q3, i have a couple of friends owning it ... and it's clearly worst on the RAM thing.

As you say, let's hope pmp surprise us with a "kick-ass" BIOS for the P5Q* on DDR2 version, at least, the working progress is being amazing and so fast. Definitely, thanks to all BIOS developer's as well as tester's (we included) ... cause sharing all these issues can give them some light to solve them.

Running 901 bios here too. Only issue is it takes a while to get into any kind of sensor monitoring software (i.e everest osd takes about 10 seconds to fire up - does anyone else have this issue). CPU temp on mine is fine, it reads around 1-2 degress higher than my hottest core in realtemp which is fair enough. What settings did you have to change to get stable with 901? Same settings i used for 704 are also stable in 901 for me. Im running 500fsb 1:1 and getting around around 9500 read, 10200 write, 10500 copy and 52.9 latency in Everest bandwidth test running PL9 with all pull ins enabled.

Is everyone finding these motherboards fiddley to set up or is it just me ?

We where warned in early previews that for max performance more than average knowledge is required, all by all I stilll find it way easier than any DFI mobo I owned lol ... sorry to say it's you :p love ya man :)

Yip the small CMOS battery on the board. Using the CMOS jumpers doesn't fully wipe the CMOS, but popping the battery should do.

Alright, I'm probably the only nub here still on 0605 BIOS, what should I flash to. Also I have to figure out HOW to do this, I know I download the .rom file onto a flash drive, then I'm assuming I enter that EZ Flash app in the BIOS. Anyways I'm just looking for a 3.9Ghz clock with my e8400 and am running into stability issues. I've gotten it to go 4+ hours at 8.5 460FSB with 5:6 CL5, but it still doesn't do the 10 I'd expect. I even upped my vcore to 1.3625 or w/e and my VVT to 1.30 (in the yellow on0es). I many just drop down to 8.5 x 450FSB and just chill, the gains are so minimal. I've often times found it that Vista boots slower with these OC's...

Well I decided to get this board coming from an Abit Ip 35 pro and all I can say is what a difference this board has made. I used to get the occasional bsod on the other motherboard ,but no on this one . So far I have been very happy. He is a screenshot on how far I have come with this overclock. The load temps are a bit high but Im ok with it. I usually idle 39-40c and max is doesnt go over 65c for gaming so Im satisfied.


This is with bios 0901 which I have found to be the most stable meaning I don't have to reset cmos if overclock fails like the rest of the bios I tried.:)

About the tips:
Don't keep voltage settings at auto as the board can overvolt a lot.
Keep performance level at auto while you are raising fsb
also good idea to keep memory fsb at auto or set it to safe value after CPU fsb (got few BSODs while windows was loading because I didn't notice DRAM fsb raised with CPU fsb)
If BIOS wont post try to adjust voltages or fsb

Maybe missing drivers for ICH10... is there a way to slipstream new files onto ya linux cd's ? But it boots from the Cd or DVD otherwise you wouldn't get the loading screen... so why does it stop there then ?
