No, not really. Just need a tiny piece of insulation tape to cover 2 of the outer pins, like this:

Yellow pins must be covered, be sure to count them right and watch CPU orientation. Green pins are for VID modding, that's a lot harder to do though.

I would highly recommend the Intel Skulltrail. I have one running 24/7 on a watercooled rig at 4Ghz using 2 QX9775's. I had it at 5ghz 8 cores on vapor but have since moved it to water. It is an extremely reliable platform. I even had my E5430's running perfectely at 3.2 Ghz with minimum voltage increase. It does not like high FSB's and personally I wouldn't even try anything higher than 410 FSB.
I have since gotten this Asus board hoping to get more performance out of my E5430's. Although I can run it at 3.2 Ghz , it will not prime more than a couple of hours. I then went down to 3 Ghz and also it will not prime for more than a couple of hours. I guess I will have to go to default speed now and maybe order a new D5400xs. Not being able to use LGA 775 HSF's is a real pain in the ass and had I known that I wouldn't even have dreamed of getting this Asus. The Noctua HSF for LGA 771 would cost more than the additional cost for spending a bit more and getting a D5400XS.
The only thing I like about the Asus is that it is a small motherboard and will fit in almost any case. That is unfortunately not true with the Skulltrail ... I had to shop very hard to be able to get something that would fit that motherboard.

For those of you that have the dreaded "black-screen" upon bootup after exiting the BIOS, well, there's a simple trick I discovered with the Z7S that works for me.
I have a HP P800 and Dell Perc 5i Raid controllers, with the HD4870X2 Gfx card, and sometimes it doesn't give the POST code after doing BIOS changes and restarting.
It would just spin the fans up, that's it, no video or POST.
While it's in that state, press the "Del" key, and keep it in for 5-15 seconds, board should reset BIOS defaults and POST.
Please let me know if this works for you guys with "BIOS" issues.

Used to do something similar with old K7 boards: Hold the delete or insert key from the time you press the power button until you get a POST/BIOS screen. Only ever worked when setting the FSB though and only works with PS2 keyboards.Quote:

With this board you don't have to power down though - if it fails to POST, just keep the "del" key pressed, and after few seconds it will beep.

For those that are overclocking this board, and using CPU multiplier - when you select a different multiplier, save/exit and then re-enter the bios, does it show the original multiplier on one cpu and the selected on the other?
I have this with my board, where it would indicate 2 different multis under cpu properties, when POSTing, it indicates correctly, but not in the bios.
My problem is selecting 400fsb, the board is very instable.....I drop my 2.66gig/333fsb/8x multi, and select 2.80gig/400fsb/6x multi, and the system crashes randomly.
It's not the cpu's, if they indeed do multi to both, otherwise the one might be running 2.80, the other 3.20.
Upping Vcore doesn't help, I'm an accomplished overclocker, so done all the basics. Memory is Kingston rated for 5-5-5-18(spd)/400fsb, and I see the bios sets them to 5-5-5-15, but that still couldn't be it.
Wish this bunch at Asus would get of their collective unmentionables and provide the proper support this motherboard deserves - it has so much potential.
What a shame.

I tested with the 6x multiplier on my old board with the E5420's, was working fine. That was with bios 0201 and C0 step CPUs though, seems like a lot of problems were introduced only by 0401 :shakes:Quote:

CPUs are E5430 C0's, so they would be fine.
Memory is 800fsb, 4x2gig config. I have very good watercooling on the CPUs, and the HD4870X2, temps are low. I did have the NB voltages up to 1.30, will try 1.35, my feeling is it must be motherboard related, as stated, even with multi down to 7, board would still crash at 400fsb, with CPUs at 2.80gig.
It's definately not the processors, as I can do 375x8=3.00gig all day long, as a matter of fact, I have been running at this speed non-stop the past few weeks, hundreds of benchmarks, crunching, et al, no problems at all.
So, I will dump more voltage at the MCH, and see what the board says.
I have a decent fan cooling down the heatpipe and surrounds, everything is well-cooled, so probably a crappy board, but it would be RMA time, as this is supposed to do 400fsb out of the box.
I might flog this and just get a Skulltrail or SuperMicro board rather. A number of years ago, at the hight of the overclocking wars, and competing for the global top5 in the Hall of fame, I walked away from DFI due to boards killing 6800 nVidia cards - I will turn my back on Asus too, and advocate against them, as they really don't come to the party.
They can't advertise about rock-solid stability et al and sell us this bovine feaces :(

I just tested with MCH voltage to 1.35volt, same issue - will boot into Win Vista 64, and random bluescreens, which seems to indicate memory for sure. Now if only Asus can provide a Bios with some meory timings open, and then Vdimm adjustment - that would make life easy.

Only other possibility would be that one or both CPUs can't handle the FSB, which was the case with my C0 E5420's above FSB 430. No amount of Vcore will get them stable on a higher FSB, I would need a VTT setting for that. So there is a possibility that your CPUs are at their FSB limit, however slim that chance may seem. 99% it's some incompatibility/timing issue with your mems. Maybe memset or another windows tool could help rule that out?
Like, set relaxed subtimings, then raise FSB in Windows using SetFSB and see what happens.

Dropping the multi to 7x at 400fsb gives me only 2.80gig, so theoretically speaking, the cpu's will be ok here. Bluescreens is memory-related, so I will measure vdimm and see if the board is undervolting on the mem.
I will adjust dual-channel voltage setting in the bios and see if I can get past the issue.
Just as an added note, even if I drop the multi to 6x at 400fsb, which equates to 2.4gig on the cpu's, it still bluescreens. So definately memory.
Let me perform a few tests, and I will report back.
No, you didn't get what I was saying. There is a slight possibility that your CPUs simply cannot handle a FSB frequency of 400Mhz, simple as that. Or at least not without VTT/GTL adjustments, both of which are (currently) impossible on the Z7S with non-QX CPUs.Quote:

Anyway, what I am saying is that you just might be so unlucky as to get a pair of CPUs that simply cannot handle FSB400 and upwards with stock VTT.
Again, this is unlikely but possible, and WILL happen with C0 step CPUs between 420 and 440Mhz FSB anyway. You will never hit FSB 450 primestable unless you got E0 step CPUs.

I will get one of the SM boards, and get rid of this POS. Either that, or tackle a VTT mod similar to the one I did couple years ago for Memory on theAbit MAX3 - this time for CPU termination though.
Just a pity Asus castrated this Bios as much as they did. What a shame.

Sadly, doing a VTT mod on the Z7S isn't that easy. From what I gather, its special dual digital PWM solution makes the whole circuitery immensely complex, so it's not just a matter of adding a VR to a given spot. im running C0 E5430s, 4x4Gb 667 RAM, 4870x2, all at 400x8. Rock solid. I finally got the watercooling up on the video card so im going to start pushing the FSB more.
Nice, but FSB 400 will probably be very close to your FSB limit with that ram config... unless you got really lucky :D

I am using two E5430's and Kingston Hyper X ram rated 800Mhz. I added little volts to the MCH to 1.3v and increased memory volts to 1.83v. Booted up and was running fine so I left it to prime to check stability. Temps were reasonable with fans kicking in high speed after they reach 65C and max temp on hottest core is 67C. I have a large fan on the MCH and on the memory and they seem quite cool to the touch.
I come back after an hour and system is off. I try restarting and I get "FF". I tried removing battery and shorting the ends and putting it back to clear CMOS. Still "FF" . What is wierd is if I move the board from horizontal to vertical it makes like a clicking sound and the board turns on and off. Very very strange, so I decided to install the backplates for the case directly on the motherboard to give more support. The clicking stops and seems that part is fixed, but still "FF".
I have been building computers for over 15 years and this has to be one of the most problematic builds ever. Does anyone know what the hell is going on?

Man, those boards are looking like way more trouble then they're worth. While being able to manually adjust FSB and vCore is all fun and good, most of 'em seem to do 400 FSB on stock vCore which is a fairly simple pin-mod, and the extra 20-40 FSB that you MIGHT get out of a Z7S doesn't seem to be worth the 24/7/365 stability you get from a proper server board.

Power consumption of that rig with all 8 CPU and 4 GPU cores loaded was around 850W from the wall, divided evenly between both PSUs, give or take 50W :shocked: :D
Gaming works just like on any other rig with a 4870X2 quadfire. Only you can comfortably do some rendering in the background on this one :D
There seems to be something quite serious in this board with regards to grounding. I think that is what causes the "FF". Probably the plastic used in the motherboard is not rigid enough and thus you get "bends" when both processors are connected. Even when you install the backplates you can see some bending. On the Intel D5400XS I was a little worried with that when I used a dual vapor setup using very large vapor and heavy vapor heads, but even with obvious bends I would never get instability or funny clicking sounds when I tightened the nuts on the vapor heads. What seems to happen on the Asus is that after you use it for some time, heat somehow allows more bend or the expansion caused by heat causes something to expand which causes a short or some sort of interference that causes "FF". Somehow removing both processors and all memory seems to "clear" this short and once you install the system again it seems OK for a while.
While I simply don't have the time to trouble shoot this board I would advice anyone who is installing such a system from scratch to be gentle with the tightening screws of the HSF. Also I would advice to protect the underside under the CPU's with plastic tape to reduce possible build up of amps from the steel bracket that could be causing intereference. I still have about a week before I get my D5400XS so maybe this weekend I will try a few more things to revive this motherboard. But really this is way too much trouble than it is worth, especially since there are excellent alternatives out there. To anyone planning on building an Octa I would highly recommend the D5400XS. I guarantee that with E5430's you will get 3.2Ghz by simply running the memory at 400 Mhz and increasing by one or two micro notches the voltage in the BIOS. I have such a system running 24/7 at full load now for almost 4 months with not a single problem. For cooling I used two extra Blue Orb's I had lying around, so no need for expensive special HSF cooling. The only problem is that the board is huge and you have to look hard to find a case that will fit the board.
I'm not sure this is a grounding issue.
I have been using non-conductive backplates from day 1.
Also I've been very careful not to bend the board.
I think I've tried everything to revive my board , no luck :(
and amps don't "build up", they're a measure of current flow. Voltage doesn't build up beyond it's supply either. A bent board could have damaged any number of components or even the tracks on the board itself though.
Pardon the expression but that's utter BS. If your cooling fails and the CPU heats up it'll melt any plastic tape before auto shutdown, wreaking havoc in the socket (and ruining all chances of a successfull RMA for ever).Quote:

Skulltrail might be an alternative for you, but it is not perfect either. Has its quirks all right, and also drains a whopping 100W more when loaoded & OCed compared to the Z7S. 100W additional heat for a mobo that costs even more than the Z7S and can't even go past FSB 400? No thank you. I'd rather use the X7DWA then.. at least you got a good chance running 430+, at half the price and lower power consumption.
I certainly hope Skulltrail 2 will be better, if it will even exist. Or we'll be screwed again in a few months time building a Dual Gainstown...
My board didnt bend at all and if you've installed the plastic spacer between the clips and motherboard there is no chance of short-circuit issues.
The VRM is what I think went out on mine as well jcool. X7DWA with vcore pinmod is the way to go ;)

Someone at Asus Support named Lyn Quan emailed me a Bios version 0501 after a stink letter to tech support regarding this board's Bios 0401.
I can inform you that the reset-to-defaults-issue when touching certain settings in the Bios is much, much better! I have fiddled extensively, and only changing the multiplier caused me one semi-defaults reset.
Also running at 3.20gig now, although memory timings seems to be the same.
Now, how do we add a file? So I can share the damn Bios for you guys to try - it's dated 30 Dec 08, so couple months newer than the 0401's 22 July 08.
Ok, would help to use full- instead of quick reply.

Only things I care about are the fix of that annoying bios reset bug when manual Vcore is set and maybe a VTT bios option. Oh yeah, and a fix of the 1,4V MCH issue would also be nice.

What I've noticed is that the calibration of my CPU temps are much better - the supposedly "stuck" temp sensors are now working - not spot-on, but only about a few deg C difference to the others.
Bios also much more stable once making changes inside the Bios itself, Hardware monitor most notably faster to open, and not crashing system/Bios at all.
Overall, better.
Currently awaiting my SM board, but will play with this the next few days.

Don't worry about the temps in my video.. it was in summertime and in florence we have about 35-38C of temp.
Apacer Fb-dimm go at 1.5v ..you think is good for overclocking?
I see the fantastic Fb-dimm waterblock from some guys ..here in this forum... you think is good or not necessary? ..probably the memory don't go over 450mhz and so ...a waterblock ..probably is not necessary...or not?:shrug:

Oh hi, I just replied to your email earlier this evening. Just wasn't clear on whether you had 667 or 800mhz mems. You can ask angelshonny and others who have bought FBdimms from me, nobody complained about their ram holding them back any more :D
The ramcoolers I use are by EKL Germany and yes, they are intended for standard DDR2. However you can mount them on FBDimms as well using the supplied heatpads and a certain technique :)
I certainly don't love the Z7S anymore.
Maybe I'll sell my board when I get mine back from RMA.

@ Megadethlore: You can change the multiplier on the Xeons, but down only, i.e. on my E5430's, which is normally 8, I can go down 7.5, 7, 6.5 and 6.

But yes, you're probably referring to the multiplier being capable of changing upwards on the normal Xeons, - this would be failry impossible, as Intel disables this feature internally in the chip, via hardware-fuses they burn.
Think back in the old days with the Athlon XP's, where they had "bridges" exposed to the top of the cpu casing - you could easily mod those "binary" fuses to give different clock multipliers - Intel's is fairly similar, but internal, and therefore, unaccessable.
I very much doubt you could change it via any hardware pins though, VID yes, but most likely not FID.....
