Dual Core Opteron Thread #2

finally got a decent opty 165. i had to pay a little bit more on ebay, but it's a gem. stepping is CCBBE 0615DPMW. 9x333 with ddr divider at 166 which is pushing my g.skill to the limit at 272Mhz. vcore is at 1.5 and i'll try to go a little lower after orthos. what's odd about this opty is that coreTemp is showing TCaseMax of 59C and TDP of 85Watts. is that normal? at idle, the temps are showing core #0 at 29C and core #1 at 18C. that's a huge difference, but once under full load, temps are pretty much even given +/- 1 or 2 degrees. i'm happy with this opty though.

The sustained transfer was the only surefire way to get it to freeze on demand. I think its a bug with early revisions of the motherboard, but doesnt affect Bios 15 (the 1st to support dual core), but does with all 5 subsequent ones.
Hopefully the new USB pci controller will work without conflict.

Those are exactly the same symptoms my girlfriend was having with her machine, in her case I think it was the USB headset. I'll order a pci USB controller from the egg and see what happens, thanks for the tip :D

My 165 CCBBE 0616XPMW shows a TDP of 75Watts and a TMax of 57'C.

Are you running your g.skill at 1t or 2t? I assume it's UCCC, I've seen a couple of sticks reviewed that could hit 295-300/2T (3-5-5-10) with 2.8V. Mine do at least 280 (3-4-4-8) @ 2T/2.8V.

I need some spare time to build my WC loop (and someone to get damn G3/8 barbs in stock...), this CCBBE is begging for better cooling :D At least I'll know the limits of my ram by the time I get that done.

Are you running your g.skill at 1t or 2t? I assume it's UCCC, I've seen a couple of sticks reviewed that could hit 295-300/2T (3-5-5-10) with 2.8V. Mine do at least 280 (3-4-4-8) @ 2T/2.8V.

I'm running my g.skill at 1T and mem timings are pretty tight. i'm not sure if it's uccc, but i can try 2T and see if i can push it pass 272Mhz. 5 hours of orthos on priority 10 and it's still going strong. coreTemp is showing 48/49 respectively. this is awesome. my room is nice and cool thanks to the cold weather outside. one quick question, would 2T decrease my performance? thanks.

you only see a difference using 1T in benchmarks. in real world apps and games ive never noticed a diff between 1T, or 2T.

Halo, have you tried lower memory dividers, and if so, can you go as high? I have the same stepping and can't do even 2.55 GHz at 1.425V. CoreTemp goes up to 60C load if I push voltage to 1.45V.

I tried an 8x mult last night, it was no problem to hit 2.8ghz with the cpu at 1.425 or 1.45 - I need to learn more about my ram though, it's not entirely stable at 280 yet.

I max out my cooling around 1.45V (a shrouded big typhoon + panaflo fan). There's a lot more room here though, I can boot at >3.0ghz with 1.5v it just crashes quickly from the heat. When I have some spare time (and the rest of my parts :P) I'll clean out my rad and install my WC setup and see what happens.

ok, i'm going to make this my official oc of my opty 165. settings are 9x333 with ltd at 3, mem divider at 166(for a total of 272Mhz), g.skill can't mustard pass 275Mhz even at 2T, vcore is 1.5(hopefully i can lower it after orthos for a few more hours, pretty tight mem timings. this thing is fast and well worth the money spent. i don't know the official stability test qualification, but i would guess 5-6 hours of orthos at priority 10 will be engouh. i hope this thing will last me for a long time before the new big upgrade to k8l or whatever.

I mean have you tried a DDR 266 or DDR300 divider? I'm forced to use one of those, and wondering if that's why I can't push much past 2.5 GHz. I can't use a 5:6 divider (DDR 333) cause my ram can't go past 230 mHz.

They test each individual chip to calculate those numbers, so it could vary within the same stepping. It has to do with voltage leakage, that's all I know.

Sometimes higher TCasemax and higher TDP correspond with better overclockers, but sometimes it doesn't.

I played with DDR266 last night, I really can't push the chip past 1.425V (~2.8ghz) without generating too much heat, so meh :(. My 148 did 1.525v/2.9ghz with the same setup and the temps were a lot lower, damn dual core heat dump :D

Hello, Posted a while back about my opteron 175 CCBBE 0617 EPMW, had some trouble with my motherboard, DFI Ultra-D. Had to send it back. But now, got this DFI SLI-DR expert. Getting Insane clocks on air, 3.025 ghz, completely stable on 1.47 V. Other motherboard just died on me from the get go. So nice to see this chip finally being able to run :).

aaahhh.. u r so lucky then..

I got my expert 3 wks ago and still testing:slapass: ... the ram setting screw me up..

I decided to take the IHS off my CCBBE 0616XPMW after a couple beers. I'm able to run 1.525 vCore again, 2.9ghz stable on air, I'm pushing for 3.0ghz. :woot:

If you haven't taken your IHS yet I suggest you do so (make sure you know how to mount your heatsink after you go topless, the clip-on ones usually need modification :fact:)

Here is where I'm at so far. My RAM is being a :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:...should do 2-2-2-x but in windows give me hell. So I'm 2-3-3-x , no biggy. Temps staying below 48...but that seems a little warm.

Doing some max screens on my 0610DPMW becuse of the 165 did hit cold bug to soon.... this got 10x so i got abit higher :) , did lose two beter shots but....i will try more another day, geting closer to the WR :fact:

Halo: does that mean your de-capped opteron 165 only gives you 3x9 MHz advantage? is it air-cooled?

Magnj: if your RAM is infineon-based, try 2-3-2-x and sqeeze a little performance back...

I have finally removed IHS and added artic silver 5, now temps are nice :
- idle : cpu 30° / core #1 19° / core #2 33°
- orthos 3mins : cpu 41° / core #1 37° / core #2 47°
Cores has 10° difference even without IHS weird ...

It's the calibration of the diodes thats off. If you read through the AMD literature those diodes are not "officially" supported - probably because of the calibration problems. Look for them to be supported in the K8L series ...
