In a bit. Let me get my jaw off the floor.
IT POSTS!
I'm staring at the BIOS screen now.... :slobber:
*edit* OK it isn't detecting the sata devices. I've plugged the DVD and the hard drive in several random ports and am getting nothing. What gives?
*edit2* never mind, had it in the "wrong" ports or something, BIOS is detecting the drives only on the two ports that are separate, not on any of the other ports. Odd.
*edit3* booting off Windows server 2008 R2 DVD. Starts to, but then it BSODs with an ACPI error. So the issue seems to not be EFI, but these boards don't have complete ACPI support (though they apparently have partial support). Hm. Wonder if there is any way around that or if we're stuck using linux - that I suck at :lol2:
Anyway enough for tonight. I'm going to bed for real this time.
I was hoping to get Server 2008 on this sucker. Well, it looks like it's time to brush up on Linux...again!
Try turning off all the acpi options.
If you're board is only crunching then Linux is a fine choice and not that difficult to setup. There's a good guide somewhere on here. You can even get temp monitoring setup too
Installing server 2008 on an EFI based computer
Have a read through that, it may help getting server 2008 to work with the boards.
That came to mind the other day that I may need to try it through the EFI shell and not direct boot to the DVD. I'm planning on giving it a try today.
i hope you get it working, i wouldn't mind getting server 2008 running as well. let us know
Anyone know how this EFI shell is supposed to work? It starts to this point then just seems to freeze at "detected 2 disks"
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...061024x768.jpg
*edit* interesting, it only hangs there when I have the SATA DVD ROM plugged in to sata20. More experimenting to be done... I see that in the IDE config in the BIOS is shows parallel ATA - but I see no PATA ports on this board!
*edit2* The EFI shell hates the SATA DVD ROM drive. If I swap the ports, then right before it hangs under the detected 2 disks it will show the hard drive, then hang. Hm. This is getting a little frustrating.
Keep at it Sparky
I think if I can just get DVD support I'll be good. I figured out how to mount the hard drive and make it accessible in the EFI shell. Uses the mount command, mount blk0 fs0 gets me access to it (though it has no partition table so it isn't readable). From what I can tell, the EFI shell only supports the FAT file system natively, but that should not affect the file system used in the OS.
I'm still scratching my head why the BIOS lists 6 SATA ports and 2 PATA, while the board physically has 10 SATA ports, no PATA, but nothing seems to get detected on anything but the 2 SATA ports separate from the other 8 :wth:
Do you have a USB flash drive you could try installing it from?
i installed with the dvd drive in sata20 and the hdd in any other sata port. then when the installation was done, unplugged the dvd drive and plugged hdd in it's place (sata20)
Did the drive show up in the BIOS on one of the group of 8 ports, or just in the OS installer? You used linux didn't you?
I'm going to try copying the DVD contents to a hard drive. I don't have a USB drive big enough to hold the data. Well, I do, just it is full of other stuff right now. I see on the DVD there is a bootmgr.EFI file :D
i don't remember exactly but it very well could have been the OS installer
Well that idea didn't work. Went to start the EFI bootloader but it just hangs.
*edit* I give up. I'm giving Ubuntu a shot.
Lol good luck it took me two days to get Ubuntu to install the way I wanted
Well it is installed, I used a guide I found here for the BOINC install. It's an old "pre-release" version though so maybe I need to update it
And... I think I have enough cooling. Temps are upper 30's, not even hitting 40C
This is just epic, though... :slobber:
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...regoodness.png
let me ask you something. when you're viewing that page does it refresh itself or do you have to move the mouse within the window to "update" it?
I have to move around in it for it to update. I thought it was frozen at first. Guess it has something to do with a linux thing because I noticed that when my mouse was outside of the console window I couldn't type in it.
yeah mine does that too. it looks frozen but it's not. pull up system monitor and look at the beautiful graph of sixteen cores working at the same time :)
Hi guys, just had an email from Amit (rakicomputers) he has informed me he has quite a few of the arima quad socket boards up for grabs.
I'm waiting to find out how many and at what price - watch this space :)
i'm running lol
Be nice to the crunching noob :(
OCM
Does anything need to be plugged into the SATAs for a post? I'd assume no but figured I'd check. Not having any luck so far.
haven't tried that... make sure you clear the cmos and have everything hooked up right. sometimes this board can be a little picky
Wow okay, it didn't boot till I plugged in a HD. Won't boot off an old PCI I had or a 8800GT, working off a x1300 ATI card though. Picky board for sure. The OBEY logo is hilarious though.
lol i know, joey scared me!! he made me feel dirty
Dang my arima put up 68000 points yesterday!!
I have not read this whole thread so if this was posted elsewhere, sorry.
TYAN S4985G3NR Thunder n4250QE Quad 1207(F) NVIDIA nForce4 Professional 2200 + 2050 SSI MEB footprint Four AMD Opteron (Rev. F) 8000 series (dual/quad-core) processors Server Motherboard Really nice board for $199, closeout look s like as Tyan lists it as EOL. I would like one but can't do it now.
yeah you might as well get one of our google arima boards for about $100 less.
uh oh.. now i want one.
Newegg does not update details of motherboards and many motherboard manufactures do not update their web sites and the only way to know what a board supports is to check the BIOs updates and even then you sometimes have to download the BIOS and hope for a text file or decompile the BIOS. In my experience Gigabyte is the best at getting it done.
I found out after buying that that link is for the S4985-E version board here is the link for the S4985 which is $199 on Newegg.
From Newegg reviews. I do not own this board so I can only go by what I am reading others claim.

Pros: As one reviewer previously noted, the BIOS program for S4985, S4985-SI and S4985-E are one and the same. So I implore all of you, whether you just got this board or have been its proud owner for many months, please update its BIOS to v3.02. Despite what the Tyan website may say that v3.00 and above are only for Istanbuls and Shanghais, this is NOT true! I have Opteron 8354s (Barcelona cores) and BIOS v3.02 can initiate the cores just fine! And of course, this BIOS update WILL allow this board to initiate Opteron Istanbuls and Shanghais (AMD AGESA upgrade in BIOS).

Also, when I upgraded to a Shanghai 8493 3.1 GHz, Win 7 only read that it was clocking at ~2.5 GHz. But once upgraded to 2.07 (will probably upgrade to 3.02) and enabling certain settings in the BIOS, worked and got Win 7 to read 3.1 GHz.
Maybe Newegg is now shipping the newer version?
Hello,
On my motherboard i have 4xopty 8218 and i use an thermaltake purepower expess 650w ( Full 12v psu ^^ ).
But... i have a new problem ...I cant acces to the bios, when the system start and that i put DEL the system are blocked on : " Entering Setup" .... After ten minute i shut down....
Have you an idea ?
And where can i DL the last bios ?
THX !
What motherboard?
on the arima f3000 with the logo obey ;)
My only suggestion would be to go down to the bare minimum hardware to get it to boot i.e. one CPU one stick of ram?
I m testing but.... "Entering setup..." : Perapse the problem is my Vga card, it s a very old pci ati...
not likely but possible. i dont know what else to say. did you say the board boots to desktop or not?
No, i have not boot to desckop. i need to change priority boot ....In bios.
Thx. I test an other vga card in few day
why do you have to change boot priority?
Hardware testing ;)
You mean crunching?!
What better way than crunching to test a cruncher?
I can't think of anything. Glad you got her up and running! What were the final specs you went with?
8354s and 4gigs. I'm going to play around with loading Windows when I have some spare time.
Nice. I hope you get it working
Think it rebooted on me yesterday afternoon, further testing required.
Time to get this thing built and on the grid. Wish me luck

\jealous :p:
Good luck with it Ben, are you putting Ubuntu on it? Any chance of a few build photos as you go through?
I'm still waiting on loads of parts to arrive - I should have mine up and running in about 2 weeks hopefully.
good luck guys! kryja make sure you have a dremel or something similar to trim down those retention brackets. that goes for everyone else waiting for parts if you have your brackets you might as well start trimming them now
I made short cuts in the places shown in my advanced diagram, the whole ledge snaps right off after you weaken these areas. Was the cleanest and fastest way I found. Then I just snapped off the side where the bracket arm went.
I just heated up a stanley blade on the hob. I left those little feet in place though - had to file them a bit to make it fit. I didn't screw the bracket down tight - just tight enough. I will be using Ubuntu.
Q & A!!!
What's wrong with this picture!
http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/7999/p1020385d.jpg
Take out the blue wire, shuffle all of the others along and put the blue wire in the receptacle that doesn't make contact with anything.
Good answer Jacka
Next question; What house hold item can I use to remove the wires?
Flat screwdriver, drawing pin, tip of the Stanley (be careful).
Just press down the tab, you don't need to use much force, and gently pull the wire. If you need to use a lot of force you're doing it wrong. Just takes a little practise. If you press down on the tab too much you might need to lift it up with your finger nail. It only need to be enough to hold it in so it doesn't fall out when you connect it to the header.
A bit fiddley but got there in the end

This probably wasn't the best night to start this - up at 5.30 tomorrow, work from 7 til 4 then college from 6 til 9 :(
I would recommend for trimming your brackets to cut all the way to the outer walls like the below;
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/196/p1020388l.jpg
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/2219/p1020389q.jpg
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/6594/p1020391o.jpg
Once you've bent the cpu leaver with some pliers they simply slip over the top
nice work, i'm gonna have to do that wire switch-a-roo at some point too. i used a couple 3-pin splitters to get all my hs's plugged in. those stupid caps are just on the wrong side
Sorry guys I'm gonna have to do a Trn style tease now as I wont be able to look at this again til Friday
http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/3149/p1020393m.jpg
Two brackets and three fans to sort. Then need to take the 500gb out of my TJ07 and install ubuntu. Soon my pretty.. soon...
Whatever you do, if you reuse the fans on something else, DO NOT plug them into a 4 pin header without moving the wires back first. Or you could let out the magic smoke from the fan or even the board  (ask me how I know about doing that kind of thing...).
how do you know?
Thank you for the pictures and the updates, Kryja! Keep up the good work, so that the machine may do good work!!! I hope to get mine running soon. Being 100% travel is not allowing any time to build mine. I think I have everything except a DVD drive [which I could pull from my main crunching machine...now where is the power switch again?]
Sparky by name, Sparky by nature eh?
Thanks for the concern. I don't think I'll be using those for anything other than this board but you never know. Putting it under water is would be fun - though my wallet begs to differ :D
I'll try to take photos of any little nuances I find
Ho boy, I definitely have a piece of bad hardware somewhere. I'm thinking video card though (crosses toes) so thats an easy fix. Could barely get it to post yesterday when I got home and then the video was going in and out till it hit an unrecognizable video range.
It's Friday! Update time
http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/5219/p1020423s.jpg
She's alive! Well kinda.. I get no video - I assume it's because the board is a fussy bugger and my 4650 isn't supported.
When she's on the 4 leds on the back, from the power switch to the usb's, are; nothing, nothing, green & orange - does this mean anything to anyone  No fancy light show like my sossaman.
When I mash the keyboard it doesn't beep at me - should it? Nor does the num lock light turn on or off.
As I only have the 4650 I think the next thing to is to buy a pci graphics card like a ati rage or something. Suggestions?
I used a PCIe x550 in mine. Started right up with it. It does seem to be picky on cards.
Same I thing I get with an incompatible video card or bad ram. If you haven't tried it already go down to the minimum amount of ram fro now.
Good suggestion MrMojoz. I'll give that a go and report back
Hm, okay I went from 16 x 512 to just 4 in CPU0's dim bank. Nothing. Switched them around and even tried 2 sticks. Nothing. Zip.
Think I'll just buy a cheapo gpu. Quick scout on ebay I can find an ati rage for ~£3 Link and a x550 for the same. If I can't get one I'll try the other.
Shame, I was really hoping to get this on the grid this weekend :(
Hi there,
i managed to have a fully working ubuntu 10.10 set up and this set up really works fast.
But i cannot enter the bios.
I press the delete button and the obey man says
"entering bios"
and it stucks for ever in that message.
I tried celaning the cmos by removing the battery but that did not help.
Any ideas?
also do you know about the usb header? One 9 pin header is located near the lan ports and another one is located near the sata20 port.
Both looks the same yet one should be COM header and the other one should be USB header.
Has anyone used one successfully?Do i need to enable the extra usb ports throug bios?
Can i enter th bios with a EFI command?
thank you .
um that's alot of questions. the only answer i have for you is that in bios you have to switch the default of 2 usb devices to 4. i haven't tried to see how many usb devices i can use at once though
Hey guys,
I recently sold my Quad Socket machine but still have the ram lying here. It's 4x1GB of Kingston Reg ECC DDR2-800 in perfect working condition, should run great on the Arima boards (or any other quad socket AMD mobos). If any1 is interested, shoot me a PM. I'll let those go cheaply to a fellow cruncher (Europe preferable) :)
Kryja did you get your board from the states??
Yes, I got my board off of the same guy from the bulk buy. Rakicomputers. Dead as a doornail. Same with Anarki
Offered to send me a new one it if I pay the postage. I'm going to Japan for three weeks tomorrow so not a lot I can do in the mean time
What kind of idiot would build a 4-socket system for his home? :)
An Xtreme id10t?
I'd love one, but the cost is beyond me. :shakes:
Sorry to disappoint, I'm a bloke
And I bought it for Epeen. Oh and to crunch ;P
Me me don't forget MEEE!! *waves hands wildly*
i think he's gonna see all these comments and be like, "duh guys, it was a joke."
I was kidding:

I claim the bigger or at least older idiot title!

Also have a dual Pentium 166, dual Pentium 233, dual PII, dual celeron 360 OCed to IIRC 550, dual sparc 20 and dual spac 10. Last time I checked all but dual PII still worked. PCs run FreeBSD and Sparcs Solaris :p:
Oh yeah at the moment 2 dual Opteron 8356 crunching.
