rddave, maybe I'm missing someting, but I think you're being unrealistic about your fsb with either the qx6850 or qx9650. Certainly for a 24/7 stable setup.
The point of the QX's is that their multipliers are unlocked. You could try instead 10x400, 445 x 9 or 420 x 9.5 even.
If you want high FSBs then the dual cores or possibly the newer revision quads like the Q9650 are a better choice.

Is that power supply of your's going to be up to the job? A GTX280 and QX9650?

I can confirm my results with my QX9560 - does 456x9 prime stable, with VTT @ 1.34v as a guide, so as RLM said, 1.4v shouldnt be needed.Quote:

Thanks for your suggestion but i have already done both.
Temps are ~40šC idle with 1.42V ~47šC load but with higher voltages the NB seems to become unstable.
A good waterblock directly mounted onto the NB will take off 10š easy i think.
The bitspower block covers both south and north bridge as well as the NB vrm mosfets, i don't really want to mess with seperate blocks and stick on heatsinks.
Imagine a copper heatsinks falls off the NB vrm mosfets (it's only held with thermal tape), it will fall straight onto the videocard! :eek:
I am thinking about relacing the heatpipe with the watercooler from MIPS :

Well it appears I will need to RMA my CPU. NewEgg is honoring an RMA on it though I have passed their 30 day requirement. They are sure to get more of my business in the future. Thumbs Up for the Egg.
I am not sure if this board is able to play nice with the Q9650. From what I am told the 16 phase power causes problems with the CPU. I called ASUS and they seem to think it is the CPU ;), it drops two cores at random, and if the problem persists it could be the Power Regulator or something. I am not able to test so off goes the CPU. :shakes:
What say you, is the CPU a concern with this boards 16 phase.
It is batch #L822B363, pack date 8/13/08 with a 1.25V max. I really hate to RMA but my hands are tied here due to time constraints. Should I put the new CPU in another board and get a dualie?

I have played several games for over an hour each done loads on the system and everything is absoluly fine and dandy, BUT, I am still yet to pass a single stress test such as prime, super PI 32M (16M is ok and passes).
If anyone has any ideas as to what to look for or some changes to make it would help alot as i am now out of ideas.

Here's one I posted for starters. Not far off from your target overclock.
Note no guarantees it will work with yours but it's something to work from. At the moment you seem to be overly relying on Auto. You need to at least set your voltages manually.

I seem to have a problem with installing Vista I think and was wondering if anyone had an insights.
The system posts and I can get into the BIOS and set boot order and make sure the CPU is at stock as well as manually setting the RAM to 1333MHz etc. That seems to be working fine although the LCD poster displays CPU_INIT most of the time (sometimes it shows the timer), so I don't know what's up with that.
I have a Blu Ray Pioneer SATA drive and Windows Vista x64 will load the files and then it stops at the collecting information screen and says "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing, please insert the CD/DVD/Floppy or USB drive with the drivers etc."
I assume these are on the ASUS support disc or ? When I put the ASUS disc and let it rescan, it shows up nothing and when I manually browse for the files or use the IDE drive as a secondary and browse, neither of them read the disc and says Windows doesn't recognise the format. Pioneer's site only has the latest firmware and nothing else, so I'm kind of lost on what it's looking for or where to find the driver.
Second problem or maybe related to the first, I bought an IDE DVD drive to see if that works with the install. The BIOS recognises the drive (as well as the Blu Ray drive I forgot to add), but when it comes to loading the Vista files initially, the IDE drive doesn't seem to load them. I've tested the drive in another machine, so I know it's working..but it keeps saying "Please put the boot disc in and press any key etc etc". I've tested the Vista disc (the Blu Ray loads it fine) in another machine and the drive could read the files.
I've played around with a few settings in the BIOS but nothing seems to be helping. Any one have an idea on what's the problem ?
Hmmmm not sure if it applies to you as you mentioned nothing about raid but I had the exact problem. The issue I had was because I had ICH9-R set as raid in bios and also had a raid card in the system. With this configuration I was getting the same error message as you (A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing, please insert the CD/DVD/Floppy or USB drive with the drivers etc). Basically no matter what raid drives I had on my usb (ICH9-R and my raid card's driver) I wasnt able to load them and could never install Windows.
The solution for me was to either remove the raid card from the system (in which case I had to load ICH9-R drivers) or to disable ICH9-R and make it Enhanced (or something like that in bios but not Raid) and then I could load the card's drivers and install Windows.
Maybe this info will help you.

Was around 45 degrees before with orginal cooling and the block ontop instead of the ROG block.
I tried a quad in a rampage yesterday, and I must say that it gave me the best results overall of any board I've tried. We've all seen the screaming dual core FSB action, but it's just as impressive with quads IMHO. Almost all of the P45 boards will deliver this sort of front side bus, but I don't believe that any can deliver this kind of memory performance concurrently. Thanks to revogamer for most of the settings; major changes I made were vdimm at 2.18v, vNB at 1.75v, and of course the ram settings you see below. This is fully 3D stable as well.

I'm not running a Vapochill but a LD SS Unit and all I did was add another piece of Armaflex/Neoprene (same height as chip, maybe a little taller) on the back side with a hole cut out for the chip, packed it with dielectric grease and haven't had a problem. Hope this helps.:DQuote:

Me too. I'm running at 4200 very stable with prime 95 and intelburn but I crash with SuperPI at 32M. I think my ram is holding me back.Quote:

I have just tested a few E8600a together with 0601-BIOS and G.Skill. For me the most stable setting is 400-strap and the second fastest divider.

The other dividers seems very much more unstable. I have not tested much with 333-strap but up til now that regardsless of what divider I choose, the system gets unstable before reaching 600MHz FSB.
As my BIOS was just wiped out due to a system crash I cannot give you much more info at the moment. *sorry* I can post my future findings though.
EDIT: Dont mind the vcore, it is just me being too lazy to lower it. ;)

Well with the 601 bios i couldnt for the life me get 500x9 stable no matter what i tried...heck it wouldnt even post...I flashed down to the 403 bios and all is good so far...all with the same settings the 601 wouldnt post at...I havint ran any super pi yet but ran a few 3dmrks...

So has anyone had any better luck with the 2x2 GB kits?
I notice that Tony at the OCZ Forums and Greg at the Mushkin Forums have both been able to get their respective 1600MHz 2x2GB 7-7-7 kits stable with some decent settings.
Tony's results are interesting given that the lower speed with tighter latencies is supposedly giving better performance.
Mine are currently running at 1200 MHz 6-6-6-18
I'm impressed by the 1266 5-5-5 stable settings.

Seemed to hit a sweet spot with 2N @ 1848. Everest Read was 39.8!!!!:D This of course was with crazy FSB @ 577. Will get back to you because I'll squeeze in a session tonight!!

I would like to put my QX9650 "under phase" and just might after seeing your score. 480 FSB would be great as on air 420 is about max and not too stable. 400 X 10 it will run all day long but figure there will be more once I chill her down. Also, I can run at 500x9 in Vista Ultra 32-bit but the CPU score is only 6700 with Vista, while it is 7100 in XP Pro.
In my previous benchmarks without this OC Profile being invoked my HD4870s were running as 1 OCd and the other not OCd. With this OC Profile set to run both OCd I've went from a 3DMark06 Score of 24,070 to 26,102. There are times in the Canyon Flight Benchmark where the FPS almost reach 300.

It looks like my board goes back to ASUS on Monday :shakes:. They say 10 days for RMA, we will soon see.
The voltages would spike out of range even if they were set manually. ASUS suggested it was the chip but I was getting fatal bus or interconnect errors. If I had not left probe on I would not have found the problem, all of a sudden the alarm went off and I saw the core volts red. It successfully fried two cores in a Q9650 so I am not about to put the new chip in this board.
Might want to keep an eye on this :shrug:
So has anyone had any better luck with the 2x2 GB kits?
@Zlojack Dood, been busy..apologies. My 2x2 Diablos are a funny beast. I can take them down to 1600 with 1N 7 7 7 21 72 but there seems to be a big hole from 1848 - 1921. Have tried all kinds of different ratios, settings etc. I can still do 2000 mhz but at loose timings. I keep coming back to the one pictured below as it is stable as can be. Yup, can go faster but 1760 @ 8 8 8 15 72 gives nice results. Will keep trying for more but as I mentioned earlier can't seem to nail it down. Don't pay attention to the Core Volts as I just came down from a run @ 5.5 Ghz. Monday a couple sets of Cellshock black should arrive.....can't wait to slot them in!!.:D

That's good to hear guys!!:D They were finally it stock and on sale at memoryc so snagged 2 2x1 kits. Will try them 2x1 and 4x1 to see how they perform. I've had the 2x2 diablos @ 2.15 - 2.2V with fans over top and so far not a problem. They don't even get warm. Do you think I could use 3x1 of these for Nehalem?? Or will it have to be a new 3x1 or 3x2 kit?

Are the Diablos the overwhelming recommendation for a 2x2gb kit?
@ DeathWalking As this is my first kit of DDR3 ram I don't know if I would say overwhelming recommendation but I'm pretty happy with my set (GTS). I've managed to get them stable @ 1800 8 8 8 21 72 2N & 1760 8 8 8 15 72 1N. Still working on going higher but might have to loosen the timings a bit. They like the volts...I've pumped anything up to 2.2V through them and then they become stable at the tighter timings. It seems the guys like Zeus and a few others with the 2x1 kits are able to achieve much better timings at higher mhz than the 2x2 kits. I should get a couple kits of cellshock black tomorrow and will see how they do. :DQuote:

@Eternal Fantasy And a big thanks to you as well EF...will try your settings tonight and see if I can get it stable.:clap: My +250 ps skew settings and +12.5 NB Vref and Ch A & B Vref +50 worked straight across from the 2X2 Diablo for the 2X1 Cell shock but 4X1 was not stable. Tried a bit but went back to 2X1 because I could do just about anything with them. Took them all the way up to 2211 mhz!!:eek: An interesting side note. Anyone else feel the original Crysis is more CPU bound than GPU? With the E8600 @ 5 Ghz + I can play Very High on everything @ 1920 X 1200. 50 - 75 FPS. Looks Ongelooflijk!!! (unbelievable) With my main QX9650 @ 4 Ghz it struggles on high. Will give 2560 X 1600 a go tonight as well. Yup, this board has some funny quirks but it is definetly the most fun I've ever had with a board. Very forgiving with bad OC attempts. Thanks again for the settings!!:up:

I never had any luck with GTL settings and left them all at Auto but I really gave your settings you posted an honest try and it would either BSOD me or crash shortly after in Windows OR fail Memtest within 20 percent, usually within 5 percent tested. However, with the settings below I am SAF!!!!!:) (stable as f..k!!) apologies for the profanity but I'm stoked!!

Thanks for this thread - it is absolutely jam packed with great info for setting up a Rampage Extreme. I've decided to go ahead and build an RE system for myself - and donate my 680i SLI setup to the family. At the end of the day it's got to be 24/7 stable for my own use, but I might push it a little on the way there!
Using the info from this thread I've gone for an air cooled setup as described below. The last of the parts - except for the screen, show up today sometime, so I'll post some progress reports, etc. (Probably with a few questions!) as I go.

There are quite abit of differences between related vcore settings for the Q9650.
What's the difference between CPU voltage and CPU PLL Voltage. I took the advice of Greg from mushkin and set the CPU voltage at 1.15 and PLL at 1.5116.

Well, it's all together. Sort of.
Hooked everything up turned it on... Can't get past CPU INIT loop where it starts, runs for about 3 seconds, shuts down and does it all over again. No bios no nothing. The HDD starts spinning, the graphics card flashes, fans spin. Power to everything it seems, but no boot.
Am only running 1x 1 Gb stick of memory - tried two different ones in two different slots, moved graphics card to the other PCI slot, checked all wires, have tried the BIOS_FLASHBACK jumper on all three settings, tried pushing and pushing and holding the CLR CMOS button on the back. No joy. Will take out the CMOS battery and let it sit overnight I guess.
Not sure what else to try. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm looking around online for suggestions... I must've done something wrong here. What could it be??
Just unhook everything unneeded and try to boot with just the CPU in place and 1 stick of RAM -- no videocard.
Make sure the 8pin power connector is in place and of course the 24pin ATX connector.
Hook up a the speaker, it should give a serie of beeps that should mean no vga detected.
If it doesn't, get the board out of the case, triple check nothing is shorting and try the same thing with the board out of the case.
If it still refuses to post, try a different cpu.
If all above fails, i'm afraid your board is brick.
GriZ - is that with 4x1gb Cellshock black that you are stable with now? I am seriously tempted to grab myself a couple of sets myself (although I noticed memoryc are now out of stock :( )Quote:

Well I have been trying all night (and yesterday) to get this thing stable with my Q9550 and OCZ PC3 12800 to no avail.
I actually manage to run my CPU at 490FSB 4.180GHZ and memory 1600MHZ stock timings and it will run Prime Small FFTs for 2 hours (did not test further) but when I try BLEND it fails but the PC does not freeze.
I came to the conclusion that my RAM is having serious issues with this motherboard. The weird thing is that if I set my CPU at 400FSB the RAM tests fine at 1600MHZ in Prime.
This is the only setting I managed to make the RAM test without errors by hand.
Should I get rid of the OCZ or the motherboard?
BTW I am all on water.
Depending on your model of OCZ, this might help.
