damn :(, I loved my nice bios with 1,01V 160/450Mhz and 1,36V 850/1200Mhz...
So i have to take Rivatuner with the 8.11 .
my last 8800GTS was quite easier to handle =/- but i must say, with original bios the 4850 works really fine with the TV.

srsly though, is my card really that bad or am i doing something wrong. vpgu 1.35 and only 770MHz stable (really stable).

Didn't change anything like hash ore something else, only frequencies and voltages. Card does well in Windows, 2d 160/500 - 3d 825/1120 - very stable.

Thanks for info with overdrive, installed 8.10 - overdrive disabled, overclocked with rivatuner to 850/1200 but after every benchmark in vantage - clock droppes to 625/1200 an stays there. Strange. So the first "level" benches with 850 up to 900 Mhz and the following were benched wth 625. :confused:
Never changed the Hash in RBE in the "Additional Features" tab.
I will try a new bios now, UVD Settings untouched. Perhaps card crashes caused by the UVD clocks...

VMem Mod makes no no difference. The OC result became worse with more voltage...
i have a Connect3D 4870 1gb and before voltmod i got 17400 from 3dmark06 @ 850/1000 with q6600@3.5ghz. But after voltmod i could only make it stabile @ 860/1100 1.36V and it wont go any higher than that. And the real strange thing is i can only get 16300 from 3dmark06 with 860/1100 (lower than the 850/1000 with stock voltages). What could be wrong ? I dont have any heatsinks on voltage regulators and i have twin turbo and heatsinks on rams.
I would think voltage regulators being to hot in that case.
He has active cooling but no sinks and is having issues, you have active cooling but sinks. I think both are required with how hot they can get.
but i have sinks on them, not under active cooling though. results are about the same as Iarwa1N's. 1.36 and 870mhz (hd4850).
I put sinks on my voltage regulators but the results did not change, i still can't bench above 860, i guess this is the top for me. But i find the reason of the low 3dmarks, it is Ati Tray Tools. I was keeping ATT open during the 3dmark06 to monitor temps. I got +1000 with the same settings without ATT running.
Hey guys, I need some help here.
I have the Sapphire Radeon 4850 and yesterday I flashed my modded BIOS with RBE 1.17.
I changed the default clocks to 720/1200 and I changed the upper limits to CCC at 800/1300.
After tha flash went ok, I tested the system by playing 30 minutes Far Cry2.Everything was great and the temp was good as before the flashing.
Also I used the pc for 4 hours for watching TV or internet use.
Today, I wanted to see some emails and when it reached at windows desktop, I got 3 vertical columns full with artifacts and then my pc froze.I rebooted 3 times and everytime I got the same thing.
Sometime, I got a VPU recover message (even if I had it disabled) about that the graphics adapter was reset.The screen was ok for a few seconds, but again the pc froze.
What is your opinion?Can the bios cause all these troubles, when yesterday was working fine?Can the fan create problems?Or maybe the drivers, which were installed again after the flashing..
Heh, i think i just killed my card with furmark :shrug: I was monitoring vrm temps and after 5 minutes the vrm temp was 127C even though i have sinks on vrms and than bum! black screen and now d601 led is on and there is nothing on screen. is there any way to fix this or my card is dead for sure ?

When u give 1.158 in that sapphire card the vrm's can't handle it and die. My sapphire card was making squealing noises,then weird artifacts, took it back to default,and realized all games crash.... rma...Quote:

Furmark espacially needs a geat cooling performance, my voltage regulators become about 10-20°C hotter (with big sinks) than in Crysis. I think thats the reason why i can bench Vantage with 910 and Furmark has problems with 850mhz. The voltage is not stable enough for Furmark >850. The VR are designed for 625MHz @ 1,16V , 850 @ 1,4V needs nearly twice or more power than standard configuration.
Clean your card carefully but decent and send in for warranty. If you try to fix anything on card, warranty will be lost for sure.
I have active cooling with big sinks (look at pic above) - the sinks are getting very very hot if take off my fan. I think without these sinks, regulatos will die in seconds.
Gainward and Palit 1024mb is good up to 1,6V vgpu @ air (cold air from outside)
take care on pwm area, but really improved power delivery here...
didnt gain much mhz @ 1,5V+ (4 sure just better cooling needed)
maybe it can reach with about 0°C 1ghz core 3dstable
never tried vmem mod, just searching for vdroop ^^
she's @ 1,6V (load) ready for about 960-970 3dmark stable
(screeny is with ambient temps @ 15C 1,5V (load) but still in nature card is running pretty hot but doesnt stop working ;) )
what do you think about this voltage @ full load? do you think it's possible?
my 4850 is volt modded & i use 1.4v for vgpu.
i set 0.89v idle & 1.044v full load in RBE together with 800/1150 core & memclock.
i'm wondering if the hardware monitor's detecting the real voltage required to run 800/1150 stable on atitool artifact test and furmark.
or it's only detecting the voltage set in the bios by RBE? i thought 800mhz core required 1.3v and above?

it detects the bios voltage settings. Use a voltmeter to messaure the exact value. You can try every possivle voltage setting, up to 1,158V in 3D and <0,9 V in 2D. But be carefull, some of the non reference layout cards may become damaged by to high bios voltage settings. Ive read somewhere about that. My Powercolor card didn't have any problems with possible voltage settings.
But maybe you will have problems when adding a second display, read some posts ago an search for what the right RBE settings to prevent bluescreens in dual display mode.

What is the best software to use for overclocking these cards?

find pin 19 on the datasheet and measure resistance between fbpin and ground then set 20x vr between fb and ground, finished.

my name is Michael and i following this thread very interested. I got a Radeon HD4850 from Gainward (not the GS one) i increased the core clock to 675mhz and ram to 1100mhz. It runīs very stable. now i tryed to increase the core more but i think the vcore issnīt high enought. i set ist to the maximum (1.18V) now i think i need a pencil mod, but i couldtnīt found for this PCB a pencil mod? when yes, how?
anyone an idea?

Small update on the powercolor 4870 pcs rev2: Measured the FB->gnd and got 16kOhm (from several spots).

Didn't have a 200k+ vr at home, so the testing will have to wait for a while, but if anyone also interested in modding this card could verify this 16k res, I'd be grateful!
Further: Stock vGPU is ~1.31v in windows, no load, and vMem is ~1.6v, same setting.

Im not really sure what you are trying to ask in the first sentense? I any case, Ill repeat why a pencil-mod isn't viable on the reference 4870: The resistance from the soldering point to ground is really low. With a potentiometer of the right range, you can still navigate a "parallell" ground connection within the right ohmages, creating the desired drop in voltage at the soldering point.Quote:

scutzi128, yes, You can use one of them. Just put You DMM's black wire (GND) to some GND in Your PC (molex GND is also OK) and red one to that point...

About non-reference ASUS 4850: it doesn't have VRM cooling. Is it safe? Should I place a heatsink there for VM or 120mm fan would be enough?
Would I face any difficulties changing cooler to Accelero S1? I don't want to disassemble it while i'm not sure i can revert all of my modification to factory original state...

@lex, yes You can use AC S1, and I recommend it. It is very good perf/buck value and I have the same cooling on my 4850 with 2x120mm fans. I used the VRM heatsinks also, because whole PWM gets pretty hot under load.

Sorry, I can't help You with the RMA case, when You plan to Vmod Your card. Even changing original cooler voids warranty. Tho, I don't know, if they will examine the thermal paste, when the cooler has been canged.

I have an AC S1 on my 4850 and it is an amazing cooler for the price. I strapped on two 92mm 55cfm fans and my load temp using furmark is 44C @ 24C ambient temp.
Guys, anyone having info on vmodding a Gainward HD4850GS? Or some clever bios available? :) Don't wanna do a hardmod, just like a simple bios, or something.
joshua7, Golden Sample cards probably have the highest possible Vcore in BIOS so I'm afraid You can't do much about it.

MEMIO temp. was 61C max at ATITool.
With Accelero S1 and voltage set to 1.18V it was stable @715-720 MHz(685 only with ref. cooler).
Like i said, I've killed that card and I'm very unhappy about it.
They've replaced it for non-ref. 4850 I described earlier. It has Glaciator fan which I didn't touch yet and it's stable 725MHz@1.18V (software), but the temps are high enough (MEMIO > 86C).
Is it worth overclocking?

Hey regenade, we have the same card. Look at my post (#1250). I posted a picture there for the vGPU soldering point. When I measured the resistance to ground, I got 16kOhm, but I didn't have a 200kOhm vr at the time. I have still not been able to test with a vr.Quote:

Just be going a few quick passes with the pencil i've been able to gain 90MHz so far on the gpu on my 4850's. They were running at 1.20 and by just adding .05v I've had them running stable at 750MHz

I marked FB pin trace. You see that there are 3 SMD capacitors and 2 SMD resistors that are connected to FB. Use DMM to search GND on the other ends of them. If You find one, You can use it for pencil mode. First measure default resistance between FB and GND for reference.
Seems nice card to play with. This IC can actually control up to 5-phase PWM :cool:

icewaere, put Your DMM to lowest resistance reading (ie 200ohm). Put one stick to some GND You know (ie GND in PCIe connector) and with other end start measuring the SMD components. It must read 0,00ohm, so You'll know its GND.
When You have find the right one, put Your DMM to bigger resistance(ie 20kohm) and measure the resistance between two sides of that component. Then use a pencil to lower resistance. Don't forget to check the resistance drop after every stripe You have done.
Lower the resistance for example 10% at first and then turn on Your PC to check, how much Vgpu rised!

Hey guys, this is my second pencil voltmod on a graphics card (1st one was on 2x3870's - worked out ok!) I have HIS 4850, w/ a blue PCB, doesn't look like it's a complete non-reference, but there are some things different, like - the 2 places to shade in with a pencil have been swapped ! and theres a few caps missing from the VRM area... which is.. crap :down: (btw, how would this affect OC'ing ? or the card in general ?)
Now, with the stock cooler, i was able to get 670/(still working on mem atm, its a bugger to find stable...) Yeah.. not the best. But anyway, i whacked on a T-rad2 and 2x92mm fans.. and my my is this SO good ! when i 1st booted up, was getting idle temps of 20-22*c ! load was around 32-33 with furmark after 10 odd minutes, i'd say room temp was 15-20 odd degrees - pretty chilly (i have antec900 with plenty of airflow though.)

I'd highly recommend it. Clocks weren't that much better with this on, i think they were 675-680 on core, can't remember :shrug:
Now to the voltmodding ! I tested the ohms with my left-behind british gas DMM :hehe: (which the brand happened to be called fluke !) and twas 2654ohms, which equaled 1.18v on load. I lowered it to around 2450ish, which gave me 1.29 on load. I got a 750 coreclock out of this, (using Rivatuner to OC!) 755 failed furmark, funny how a managed to get 750 exactly with one tweak eh? Temps were closing in on 35*c.
Now, i then went for more, tweaked ohms, 2400. 1.33v on Load. I managed a 775 coreclock, anymore - fail. Temps were getting closer to 40.
Now, this is when i went aiming for my 24/7 voltage, 1.38v. I lowered resistance to 2300, managed to get near enough- 1.38v on load !. I tried 800 on coreclock, seemed furmark stable.. knocked it to 825.. furmark stable. Temps were around 40*c. Then.. i just looked into my case, and happened to see an almost browny yellowish-ness on some of the solderings ! i crap myself pretty much, stopped furmark, took out card and erased pencil mod.

In that pic, the solderings points to the right of the green sticker and around where it has stamped 'test passed' (inc one of the vgpu measure points) had this yellowish goo around them, not ALOT, but noticeable up close. I can't remember if it was like this when i 1st got the card, but ofc u would understand im being cautious about my new card. Have any ideas? a mate told me it might be flux, but is this good or bad ?! should i continue my voltmod ? Temps were NOT an issue.

Default vCore for this Powercolor 4830 is indeed 1.25v - now running 1.3v but yet to test overclock - was 775 Mhz on 1.25v with water.

i have found GND 0,000 on this 2 SMD resistors and on both i have an resistance of 1,04Ohms.
You think ths the right ones? I have do a little pencil on R2 but no Ohms change. dont know why ;( i have used a standart pencil.
have i used the wrong pencil or why no change on ohms?

icewaere, are You sure, it is 1,04ohm, not 1,04kohm? You can double-check the resistance, when You put one DMM stick to pin 4 and other to GND on PCIe. But I think You have done it right.
Use "regular" 2B pencil.

It does not mather, asfar it connects FB to GND. Use only one of them.

hehe ok it works ;) after 5pencils i have 1,019kohms and now 15mhz more stable ;) after 750mhz now 765mhz

I am far from an expert, so you should get this confirmed by Ceemic or someone else, more knowledgable. However, it won't hurt you to try those points with your DMM. If you get 1.1-1.3v or so, you are probably in the right spot. The components are, as I understand it, the "phase regulators" (maybe not the correct term?), and you probably have one more out of picture. They would all read the same voltage at the base plate thing I circled (if I am correct).

Yeah, but now you are making me a but worried here! The reason I suggested icewaere to check those point were that those read 1.3v on my 4870... :S Do I have the wrong points then?Quote:
