This sometimes dont work for all
Use latest BIOS
Use lastest Beta drivers
enable Plug & play in BIOS
change the slot of the sound card

Thanks for the reply slim. Ive just installed the latest BETA drivers from creative - makes no difference. Plug & Play is enabled (i made sure of that - think i read it in one of your previous posts) and I cant change the slot for the sound card due to the 2nd GTX getting in the way. Im gonna update the bios in a bit, so will see if that works.
Well, just flashed to 0804, and it solved the problem! So far so good... will start some overclocking soon :)
They are some pretty good results there, those temps are pretty good. Im hoping to get mine up to 500 FSB also, im just waiting for some watercooling.
Im still trying to decide whether to use the standard water cooling for northbridge or buy an aftermarket cooler.
2 Main problems that may help.
Nvidia nforce_winvista64_15.17_international drivers cause frezzing under COD4.
Nvidia nforce_winvista64_9.64_english_whql drivers work 100% For My Setup.
BFG 9800GX2 174.74 Video drivers work 100%
BFG 9800GX2 17x.XX Video drivers cause frezzing or driver has stopped working & has recovered.
Hope this helps maybe a few people....
sorry i didnt really post much information about those screenies, im using bios 0704 and i had my voltages set to
Vcore - 1.50000
LLC - enabled
Ram - 1.86 (overvolts to 1.90)
NB - 1.70
SB - 1.65
PLL - Auto
(All GTLREF Settings are set to AUTO)
the settings werent 100% stable but i never did any tweaking on the gtlrefs or the pll so im hoping that it might be possible to bring some of those voltages down and get it stable too but i think it might need to much voltage for that kind of constant fsb.
i have my cpu, nb and mosfets under watercooling on seperate loops. cpu is on EK Supreme and 120.3 thermochill rad and the motherboard is on EK blocks and a 120.3 both have push/pull fans and shrouds. i have an HR05 SLI on the SB
whats a good program to find the NB temps? can only see the MCP in everest but at 3.8ghz idle its at 39c which aint bad really.
Theres an issue with X-Fi and 4GB memory, as far as i see, you have 2 GB so I don't think thats the case.
Altough you could download and try the latest driver from Creative wich has this issue solved.
Another thing to try is to swap the X-Fi to the other PCI slot.
edit: OOPS didn't see the last page :D
Can someone provide a working link to a safe 0804 download?
I shipped my S2E back today for a replacement, the only thing I can think of is that maybe the 0804 that I had downloaded was corrupted or something to begin with because I had used EZflash twice before with no problems.
Went from stock to 0704 with no problems and then to 0801 with no problems either.
Finally got my system stable (20 hours)
thought SLI issues were fixed with videos (hills have eyes played with no problems)
Played X-men 3 (1080p matroska) and after 1 hour, everything was fine while I was surfing the net and then

So, I am happy to see that all the EK waterblocks needed for the S2E are the same as the Rampage. I spent alot of time watercooling the Rampage, and now I am thinking of moving those blocks over to the S2E.
However, I was curious if anyone knew what Thermalright mosfet coolers work on the S2E. I tried the HR-09U-TYPE2 on the Rampage, but discovered that they don't completely cover all the mosfets. Half of one mosfet, and 1/4 of another were exposed to air.
If not Thermalright for the mosfet cooling, then what would everyone recommend? I don't want to watercool both of my boxes. I want to aircool one and watercool the other.
Also, does the EK-NB/SB ASUS 1 (southbridge block) interfere with the installation of 2 GTX280s?
ok guys, looking for some pointers again. I cant get this board to clock my CPU at all. Ive had this CPU in both a rampage formula and DFI P35 UT T2R and it does 4ghz @ 1.31v in both - 12hrs prime stable. This board wont even boot into windows @ 1.375v. I got the ram linked + synced @ 1600mhz (CPU is 10x400). NB ive had up to 1.6v, SB 1.55v. Ive seriously loosened all memory timings. LOL!
Any ideas?
Well lately, I ran prime95 again, the Small FPU tests ran fine, But if I use Blend, The system falls flat on its face and whines like a baby, But OCCT passes fine too. So I don't get it. Is there something wrong with my memory or motherboard?
Okay, I'm going to ask the dreaded question. . .
Do the reference 790i boards have the "SLi game freeze" issue? Cuz I'm running out of my 30-day exchange window. . . and I'm starting to lose hope that this will be resolved within that time-frame. The fact that others have resolved it but I have not been able to do so given nearly identical hardware and the same BIOS, drivers, and settings leads me to believe that I might need to start considering other alternatives.
So, basically, is the "SLi Game Freeze" issue isolated to the Striker II Extreme or am I just as likely to experience it on other 790 Ultra boards?
I really want to like this board. But at this point, I'm about ready to return/sell my motherboard, CPU, and RAM, and just go back to the ones in my sig.
Tyke... would be good to see some pics of that if you can post any?
As to my CPU overclock problem... I have something to run past you guys. Are the vcore sensors accurate on this board? Only I know exactly what this CPU takes to do 4ghz on 2 or 3 other boards (around the same). Anyway in in a fit of frustration I pumped 1.38v through the CPU. Bam... much more stable.
Just by chance I happened to load CPU-Z up at that point, and it reported the voltage at 1.296v (not the 1.38v everest/bios was reporting). This seemed a little bit of a co-incidence as it was very near my old stable voltage, and the CPU was much better behaved. Anyhow, being a bit skeptical I installed speedfan... and guess wot... it reported 1.30v! LOL! Anyway, i upped the voltage so that both speedfan & CPUZ report 1.32v, and guess wot... its looking pretty stable!
To me this indicates bios is reading the voltage massively inaccurately as is everest. If I hadnt used this CPU on other motherboards I probably wouldnt have even questioned it. Here is a screen grab to show u guys:
http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/6581/voltagenp8.jpg
Does seem very strange, and im wondering if anyone else has come accross it. I dont have access to a DMM right now so i cant confirm it that way just yet.
Anyone know if the ASUS 4 works on the S2E's SB? I have the ASUS 4 for my Rampage, and didn't want to have to buy the ASUS 1 unless absolutely necessary.
For all your EK block questions...
EK Compatibility List
Sorry, I've covered a bit of it above in prior posts. But if we're going to start directly working on mine, I'll post my specs. . .
Hardware overview
Intel Q9450 w/ Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme (no OC yet - Stability Testing)
Dual NVIDIA GTX 280 SLi (eVGA)
4GB Mushkin 1600 DDR3 7-7-6-18-1T (WinXP 64-bit)
Asus Striker II Extreme Motherboard
300GB Velociraptor
Creative X-fi Titanium PCI-E
Thermaltake Toughpower 1200W
Sony GDM-FW900 24" Widescreen CRT -- Best Monitor Ever!
Just last night, I wiped again and installed fresh:
Windows XP 64-bit
Video driver 177.41
nforce 15.17
X-fi drivers for PCI-E X-fi (only drivers currently available are on CD. No web updates yet.)
I have only the following installed on my computer:
SP2 and all Windows Updates (there is no SP3 for 64-bit XP)
Lord of the Rings Online
3DMark06
DirectX June Runtime Update from Microsoft.
That's about as "clean and pristine" as possible.
BIOS 801
Over time, I've gradually raised my voltages and settings to the following as freezing has persisted.
vcore: Default (not overclocking yet)
NB: 1.48
SB: 1.50
RAM: 1.86v (shows at ~1.90)
Timings: 7-7-7-20-2T @ 1333 (loosened up to rule out RAM) - Passes Memtest indefinitely. Though it did that at 7-7-6-18-1T as well. Just being safe.
Just last night, I raised NB to 1.52, SB to 1.55, and memory to 1.88 or 1.90 (can't remember), but haven't had a chance to play to test if these minor bumps helped.
Thanks for the interest! =)

Hi OBR, is there a rev number printed on the boards near to the PCI slots ?. If so and you can get at it what does yours say ?. Cheers.
Couple of pics as requested. Both rads are mounted outside of the case.

Thanks for feedback on board rev number guys.
Just changed my Raptor X to a Samsung Spinpoint F1 1Tb to accompany my two Hitachi 500Gb drives, very pleased with speed and silence !!. Had a BSOD when copying files across from Raptor to F1 on 0801 bios, changed to 0804 and it copied first time. Not sure if this is significant or not - but maybe some file corruption issue creeping in with 0801 ????.
ASUS Striker II Extreme BIOS build 0901
New NVMM - 4.A82.75
Good work PMP :)
What does this fix or allow me to tweak more ??? :D
Gonna test this out tonight I think! Will let you know how I get on.
BTW... has anyone got anythoughts on my voltage problems here:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...postcount=1221
with "new nvmm" in 0804 ive had lot of problems with IDE devices ... is that fixed now?
Testing new BIOS
EDIT: BIOS 0901 has no notable changes. I also noticed my system is not stable anymore just 1 day after it proved to be Prime95 20 hours stable. Im this close to RMA this board since all of you say positive things about your RMAs.
Are these RMAs going through Asus or through the retailer?
Some may be getting new boards (rather than refurbs/repaired) from Asus.
I think you should probably RMA. But keep in mind that a lot of folks here may be using their 30-day exchange policy with their retailers.
Yes I am exchanging through the retailer.
Actually when I get the new board I think I am going to go to 0704 and stay there for a while. 0704 was the most stable for me, and I will wait until more work is done to try something else. Hopefully these issues with freezing will be resolved very soon in a way that works for everyone.
It is especially sad for me because I have owned other SLI boards that were rock solid stable and would run SLI for hours and hours with zero issues. It seems like 790 series has just had way too many problems. :(
Besides that, is unbeliavable how one day you run normally then the other you just freeze out of nowhere.
Can somebody help me out cause I cant find the RMA option in the ASUS site (form to fill in), Im ending up in the support page everytime I click somewhere Grrr...
Here you go. :)

Thank you!
Guys, I need some serious help right now cause I think I found the problem on my motherboard
According to what I have checked and reviewing here, I think my problem is the droop of voltages while in idle.
So please help me on this, I need to know what voltage droop causes the system to freeze and sometimes to restart so here it goes
vcore= Yes this could be the one, maybe?
PLL= This was the key for me to achieve stability on 0804, maybe adding a little more will finally let me be stable on idle?
VTT= How do you know you need more VTT? freezes? BSoDs? 1.30 (1.33 real) is what I have needed so far. dont know if I should increase this (Im almost on border line=1.36)
Memory= well, all I know is that if this was the responsable for my problems, I would get BSoDs. Could this be the one?
NB= In load 100%, but could this cause inestability in idle? I seriously dont know what to say here
SB= I have it in 1.50, is there any chance I would need more than 1.50? Im not using Tri-SLI, but all 6 SATA ports are in use, maybe this is the responsable since it has to handle a lot of hard drives? unsufficient power?
So far I think is the SB, as far as I can tell, prime95 doesnt stress the hard drives or the SB as much as it does to the NB, and this might be the reason why Im not stable specially since Im using all SATA ports.
Ok , Im not covering my eyes and trying to think that I have the perfect board and I just need to find the right voltages. I am 100% stable in Load, but I sometimes freeze in idle and I came to the conclusion it could be because of the sudden voltage droops.
Anybody think they can help me out on this one before I end up RMAing the board, I would really appreciate!
From my reading here and elsewhere, having LLC enabled is most often the cause of "idle freezing/crashing/BSODs." Anandtech cautions against its use here for just that reason.
Do you have LLC enabled?
H
What PLL are you running Slim? Whenever im writing to my hard drive my computer loses alot of stability ive figured out. I can run movies, games, whatever you want for hours on end, but when i try and install something, or even download something big, the computer isnt so stable. Its most likely to freeze during this time, but it doesnt always do that, however, it almost always starts locking the programs up one at a time. Ive explained this before. The RAM usage during this time is normal so i can only assume theres a problem with accessing the HDDs and only a certain amount of data is allowed through at once. Im thinking/hoping a SATA driver for the mobo might help out a bit. Still, if voltage fixes it then ill be more happy.
Hey guys, i need a little help here, I had a video corruption issue show up for me last night. I had been running XP 64 up until yesterday and everything was stable. Yesterday i changed to vista 64, keeping the same 177.35 video drivers and watching a movie last night, bang video corruption 3 times in 40 minutes, all 3 times requiring a restart. I have posted a picture of what this corruption looks like, this is not from my PC but is similar to what i experienced. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yes I do have it enabled. Do you think that could be the cause? Most people here have LLC enabled afaik.
I have 1.56v for PLL.
I noticed that this was the only voltage I had in Auto so I thought that maybe I needed to increase this so I started with 1.50, but it was the same, then increased to 1.52 and was stable for 1 hour running prime, then 1.54 let me ran for 4 hours, so I knew I was going the right way so I applied 1.56 and that let me ran prime for 20 hours and I closed it after it.
Slim, I can help you with RMAing your board through Asus, since I have already done it. What do you need bud??
Thanks tek, but I already filled the form and Im just waiting for ASUS to reply to me. Oh god, If I have to RMA this board, Im going to have to use the G1S for a month :(
So did you get it stable after all?
There are two things that make me think are making me fail in nonsense situations. 1) lack of voltage to SB or any other component or 2) LLC
VTT= How do you know you need more VTT? freezes? BSoDs? 1.30 (1.33 real) is what I have needed so far. dont know if I should increase this (Im almost on border line=1.36)
I tried stuffing around with some settings to fix that video corruption error i was getting and remembered that i had changed this value yesterday. I had it at 1.4 and decreased it to 1.3 after reading somewhere that it was too high. It was after that i started to recieve errors. So i raised it back to 1.36 today and video problems have gone. Hope this may help others having similar problems.
The last couple of bios updates have been OK for me, absolutely no lock-ups, freezes etc. I have two GTX 280s in SLi at 700MHz clock, and this is running perfectly in all games now. SB is maximum 37C under stress, NB is 44C. Crysis is absolutely playable at Very High settings at 1920 X 1200, min FPS is nearly 30!!!
I've given up trying to get over 450FSB with this board, but the board is now 100% stable at this speed.
Beautiful!
Our setups are almost identical, it makes me wonder why I had so much freezing but you do not. Maybe a large portion of the boards are just bad from the factory?
Would you be willing to post all of your BIOS settings please? (I see some of them in your sig) :)
Also are you using 15.17 and 177.41?
Even though Im on the border line 1.30v (1.32 is yellow) I will see if increasing this to the top 1.36v fixes anything. Thanks for the reply!
Good luck with that board. BTW, I just received the answer from ASUS. Just want to know, if I send the motherboard with 3-day shipping, from the day they get it, how long does it usually take for them to send me another one?
Well, I've got until July 10 to get this board stable before I send it back to Newegg for replacement. At which point, I'll probably sell it as new/unopened (assuming Newegg sends a new one).
I'm still getting SLi freezing in games (Lord of the Rings Online). Though I was able to play for about four hours last night before I froze (got my hopes up!). My detailed specs and experience are above. But just to summarize:
BIOS 0801
XP 64-bit
Q9450 @ stock speeds and vcore
15.17 and 177.41 drivers
NB: 1.52v
SB: 1.55v
Memory: 1.9v @ 7-7-7-20-2T @ 1333
2 x GTX280
X-fi Platinum PCI-E
Tyke and OBR, have either of you tweaked your RAM subtimings? Would you be willing to post yours? I got some guidance from the Mushkin forums for my sub-timings. But they conflict with Anandtech. And, actually, I haven't noted any real difference in stability between leaving the sub-timings to "auto" and setting them myself.
I'd rather not go any higher in NB or SB volts on air. Has that been the key to either of you getting your rigs stable in SLi?
Seems that both of you are "under water" as well. Though that's probably just coincidence.
Best,
H
Perhaps when the system is under overall stress (rather than just testing the RAM itself in a DOS environment), voltages fluctuate (etc.).
My concern/theory is that the "auto" setting for sub-timings may be setting things up in such a way that this SLi bug appears. Whereas, those who have gotten their sub-timings set up manually won't see it.
I realize it's a pain, but if you would post your sub-timings, it might help me better dial in mine for stability.
Were you stable prior to the sub-timings changes?
Sorry to hassle ya!
H
RMAing this board tomorrow morning. It was, is and is going to be forever a pain to make this thing stable. No matter what voltages, even if I overvolt every single component, and even at default BIOS settings, no stable settings. I just hope to receive a decent board from ASUS, if not, then Im going to have to think about something because I cant be using an unestable pc for 6 months. After trying so many settings, there is no other solution to this but to RMA.
I read this too and was concerned but I have this "thing" about running my chip within Intel's voltage guidline (<1.36v for my E8500) and I'm totally stable 4.2ghz @1.33v load. To achieve this with LLC disabled, I have to run outside the Intel guidlines (> 1.36v) while not under load which is most of the time.
So I've chosen to enable LLC and so far I've not seen any negative effects.
Haha, Viewsonic for serious gaming, Samsung for semi-serious gaming xD
Anyways, I just took everything off and the board is packed ready to go. What drivers (for 2 8800GT) you guys recommend me to install once I get the new board?
Btw, pmp if you read this, please post the changelog. Im really interested to see what changed from 0704 to 0901.
i am running 4GB (4x1GB) at unlinked 1600MHz 20-7-7-7, at 1800MHz are not stable ...
Hi, After reading yesterdays posts I went home and made some changes to my settings :-
LLC : ENABLED to DISABLED
CPU V : 1.3875 from 1.3275
PLL : 1.56 from 1.50
(VTT was already 1.36)
Before these changes every time I started windows I would get a Norton pop up telling me that my virus definitions were out of date even though they were the latest available. Also, once I had to re-activate it and randomly re-authorise the computer to play my iTunes.
Now it is fixed !! - I made the changes above at the same time so not sure is it is down to LLC or increasing PLL but thanks to Hurin, Slim & RasCas.
Drivers working for me are graphics 177.41 (250+ 3dMarkVantage points) and chipset 9.64 as I can't enable teaming with 15.17.

Hello guys,
Some news about the new bios 0901 ?
I still have SLI freeze in videos with 0704 and i haven't try bios 08xx.
My stuff :
Asus Striker II Extreme
Intel Q9450 @3,2Ghz FSB 1600Mhz
Zalman 9500
Corsair 2Go DDR3 1600Mhz CAS 7
SLI of MSI Geforce 9800GTX OC
WD Raptor 150Go 10 000tr/min
Seagate Barracuda 500Go
Updated to 0901 from 0804 without any issues so far. Running a GX2 so not two cards in SLi. Have seen an earlier post saying that 0804 has cured SLi video corruption.
Slim, do you give up on helping other SLI freezing users ? :(
You should have listened to me 1 month ago, than you would already be a happy man with a good board
( 06-13-2008, 08:17 PM post#941 ) :D
Anyway, good job to RMA the damn thing, if it's broken don't try to fix it, just RMA.
Hope you get more luck with your replacement
I know a lot of you are having problems, and I really hope you get them sorted, but so far my SIIE has given me very few major issue's, although one or 2 oddities which I'll get onto in a in. Ive not had any corruption issues, no SLI freezes and everything is working pretty good... i keep half expecting something to go wrong everytime I switch it on! LOL! Anyhow, I got my CPU stable at 4ghz on this board:
http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/1...ablecrogy7.jpg
There was an FSB hole around 400mhz (on previous boards ran 400x10) and i coulnt understand y it wouldnt even get to windows! Anyhow, solved that by dropping the multi as u can see :)
Now for an oddity - wanna run this past you guys. Tonight ive been trying to tighten up my timings, but I set them in bios, it posts with the timings I have set, but then everything in windows reports them as not change - with the exception of CAS. In the shot below, its set to 7-7-7-20 in bios, and on the POST screen thats what it displays. This is 0901 bios. Any ideas?
http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/8...ryissuewy6.jpg
I didnt give up, didnt you see all this days I was trying to fix this?
I just hope I did the right thing and that this time I get a board that will let me use SLI and be stable with my OC with no corruptions.
At least I have some good news, IM GOING WATER COOLING :bounces::bounces:
Just watch me coming back in 2 weeks
@MikeMK
can you post your settings?
Settings are as follows:
Multi: 9
FSB Mem Clock Mode: Linked
FSB Mem Ratio: Synced
FSB (QDR) 1780 (SDR = 445mhz)
LDT Freq: 4x
vcore: 1.32v
CPU PLL:1.54v
CPU VTT: 1.3v
Memory: 1.84v
NB Core: 1.58v
SB Core: 1.55v
CPU GTL Ref0:+42mv (I had one weaker core)
All other CPU GTL's @ Default
Memory timings were all at auto for the prime run, as i said in my last post, im just tightening them up now, but having probs with them actually applying properly. Hope that helps :)
I have a question for Justifire if your around?
I see here http://bandwidth.se/thumbs/nouser/img080047c7ab84.jpg you are using thermalright mosfet coolers, but you dont mention in your post which ones? Could you let me know? Did they fit ok out the box? Also, is that an evercool VC-RE on the SB? Cos i have one lying around here that I could use. Just thinking of putting my MCW30 on that NB to cool it down a bit more!
Thanks man, Im really interested!
Btw this is what Im going to be using
Water cooling
CPU Block: D-TEK FuZion v2 CPU Block
Radiator: Feser X-Changer Dual 120mm Xtreme Performance
Pump: Swiftech MCP655B or Liang D5
Barbs: Bitspower Premium G1/4" High Flow 1/2" Fitting - Black Sparkle
Clamps: Breeze Miniature Hose Clamp 7/16 in. to 25/32 in
Reservoir: EK-Multioption RES 250 Rev 2
EK-ANTI-Cyclon for EK Reservoirs
EK Spare Reservoir Holders
Fillport: Danger Den Aluminum Fillport
Water cooling CPU+NB (with stock fusion block) of course with some Fesser coolant and Tygon tubes. I hope to have all of this by the time my Striker arrives :)
just make sure you use good tubing on the Fusion block. the stock ones leak way too easy
Yeah thats why Im using those Bitspower barbs and Im going to be getting clamps from sidewinder just to make sure no leaks there. I paid a lot for that motherboard and taking out the heatsinks is just ridiculous. Besides, that Republic of Gamers logo looks really nice :)
one from the back...don't ask how long it took or how many zip ties were used lol.
Thats a nice build trigger!!!
can someone help me out a bit with an explanation?
I'm a little unclear about how CPU GTL Ref's work. ATM im at 4275 ghz. Core 0 is prime stable for 30 hours the rest fail between two minutes and 3 hours after the test starts.
Second question:
Using core temp I'm seeing max temps full load for each core around 64C, and PCprobe shows my CPU temperature at 40C full load. Is there a reason for the difference in reported temps, or is it just thermal differences between where each core temp and cpu temp are taken?
is this the right place for this post? I have a Q6600 CPU and can only overclock it to 3.0 Ghz i.e. 333 x 9
I get a good score on 3D Vantage
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dmv=211942 P 14,300
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dmv=211982 E 42,108
The main part of the high score comes from the Physx boost related to the 177.39 driver and abit of the overclock. I can run the RAM at 1555 Mhz however I'm not sure if this helps if I can't get the motherboard over 1333 Mhz.
Has anyone OC'd this Motherboard to higher than 3.0 Ghz with this CPU? If so what settings do I need?
