Hi, silly me, you are correct of course, boots into vista @ 8x. I guess I've gotta increase the vcore with 9x until vista's stable.
Thanks...

Hi, is my dram too high do you think?

Thanks...

well I wouldn't run those dimms at 2.4, what did you set in the bios ? 2.3 or something, this board overvolts so plz be carefull and set a few notches lower in the bios then what is required... and if you want to run them this high plz give them some active cooling
My Q6600 G0 runs nicely on this board @ 400*9, with 1.41875 Vcore IIRC, which is 1.384 according to CPU-Z, idle, and temp in idle is 29C (temp w/o OC was 22C). Using thermalright U 120 Xt with a silverstone FM121 in an antec P182 with the default fans installed.
Just lower it some and do a memtest, then repeat until memtest gives you an error.
Hi guys,
I just got the SE, pretty impressed, although I'm overwhelmed learning a new bios and finding all the tricks.
I've been reading through this forum, is the consensus that you can leave most settings on auto except for CPU vcore and DRAM voltage? Are there any others that have to be tweaked to get into the low 3 GHz range? (I have a e6420 that I usually run at 3.2 ~ 3.3 GHz)
Thanks in advance for any guidance! :-)
PS I used to be a regular in the P5B forum before I went to the 680i (never again nVidia, stick to GPU’s, it’s what you do best) It's nice to be back with an Intel chipset.
My board arrived 2 days ago .
Definitely happy w/ the layout. There are plenty of fan headers and the forward facing SATA connectors are a plus when using crossfire. I am also glad they moved the PATA connector out from under the bottom PCI-e connector which was where they had it on the P5K-D, tisk tisk.
I haven't OC'd yet but will give it a go tomorrow when I get back from work. So far I haven't had any issues running 4 gigs of Patriot 8500 @ 1003 5-5-5-9 @ 2.15V which was the same as I had it on my P5K-D. As far as over volting the RAM, I only see the voltage .01V over in the BIOS and in PC Probe. Also using Loadline calibration there is only a .02V difference between what is set in the BIOS and what I get in windows.
The board is solid as far as I am concerned:up:.
Also, I haven't had any issues using my X-Fi card in the top PCI slot. I can't try the bottom slot since my 2nd GPU blocks that slot.
you should be fine with the voltages at auto, and set your cpu and dram manually, also the only other thing you might need to mess around with is the ram settings, the transaction booster etc...... just mess with it keep on running memtest intill you are error free.
is this board performance better then the P5W DH Deluxe (using the 975 chipset)
at high resolutions, gaming performance differences are not noticeable between chipsets, at lower resolutions newer and mainly intel chipsets are a little bit faster.........but overall the new feature should pull you twords this board......pci-e 2.0 and 2x 16x pci-e mainly....ich9 thats pretty much all you would be gaining.....also 45nm cpu support, thats a pretty big list if u ask me.
OK guys seems like i am going back to SLi, 780i Striker Extreme II, i will be selling my board if anyone is interested..........thanks.
No luck with any X38 boards eh GAR? :|
Dont get me wrong, this is one of the best boards i have ever used.........but when it comes to gaming, a video card, especially 2 of them is alot more beneficial than having a higher FSB, so SLi would come in handy for me, especially with my 24" monitor......i still havnt made a 100% final decision, but most likely i will head in that direction.
I will make a decision after ATi releases the 3870, if it is close to the 8800GT i will keep this board and get 2 of those for X fire.....if not i will sell and get 2 8800GT's.....so dont let me down ATi........wich they prolly will :[
The New Striker Extreme II should be out late Nov. early Dec........they already have a beta bios on the asus ftp site.
ftp://ftp.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socke...ker_II_Formula
Well I tried the same settings that I used w/ my P5K-D to OC my x6800 to 3.6 GHz and it failed. I used:
CMOS: 9
FSB: 400
Strap: 266
DDR2: 1003MHz
Timmings: 5-5-5-9 (the rest auto)
Trans booster: Auto
Vcore: 1.475V (also tried 1.485V & 1.5V)
CPU PLL: Auto
NB: 1.51V
DRAM: 2.1V (2.2V in BIOS)
FSB Term: AUTO
SB: AUTO
Everything else on auto as well. Used both 0505 & 0602 BIOS's.
I guess very little love for the dual cores this time around. I don't have any more time to tinker as I have to get ready for work.
I hope ATi has something up their sleeves, but from the looks of it, if this fails, i wont be looking forward to their upcoming rv700 or 680.........the thing is the 8800GT is such an amazing card for $250 usd that if ATi fails, there wont be any reason to go with ATi, thats why i think in their new graph they concentrate on DX 10.1............i dont care for DX 10.1 when D10 isnt fully utilized, raw performance is what customers care about, not special effects.......
dang i understand what you are saying but man my 680i was the crappiest board i have ever freakin had...and i mean the worst!! it was probably the most unstable and worst overclocking board ever...of course i had a evga but dang that thing sucked!!! lol but i dont blame you for wanting sli although i will never go back to having two graphics cards...way to pricey and power hungry...i wouldnt really wait for the atis graphics cards i like ati but they are just junk right now and have nothing good coming up...which sux for us!!! anyway good luck on your decision!
http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?op...=3940&Itemid=1
ATI has announced that their price for the 38xx @ 199 dollars, considerable lower then the 8800GT they think that ATI did it because they already know that the the GT is better then their new line.... I still wana see some results first , before taking any conclusions, but I think ATI failed "again"
0602 Bios lost me my overclock! I can run max FSB 470x8 atm with this Quad on 0505, ram is good for about 1100MHz 4-4-4-12, CPU good for ~3.9GHz but can't push to 475x8 for 3.8GHz with 0505 and couldn't even get close to 470x8 with 0602...!!!
What settings can I use for 475MHz stable? I increased NB volts to 1.65v for 470, but just can't get 475 stable regardless of voltage used. Are there any settings I should disable to get the stabilty there? What are you guys who are hitting 475MHz+ running settings wise?
Are the SLI drivers all that's missing to take advantage of 2x 8800GT on a Maximus? Is it a software issue only? Maybe Intel will favor nividia in the near future and provide drivers.
Hey GAR...PRime95/system process issue has been fixed with new bios...wanna check and see how far you can go now?
So,is anyone working with the chipset fuzion in his loop?
Yeah, me too...i hadn't upped the clocks yet...I wsa able to get 1.5v @ 3.2ghz, but once I upped the clocks, it came back. I guess it further bolsters the idea that it's current draw that triggers it, and I can get about 0.02v higher, which has allowed me a few more mhz...I suppose...tried fresh winblows, no luck either, so it's something on the board itself causing the issue, IHMO...but what, I dunno.
I used it a bit, then removed it. I'm also running one less videorcard ATM, and it doesn't seem to be needed right now(42c loaded now), but that may change when I get my card back from RMA.
i flashed 0602 bios with ez flash from usb drive and now mobo doesn't post
lcd poster "det ram".
i tried with 1 module,clr cmos,but no luck.
How are people liking the 0602 bios for overclocking? I lost quite a significant MHz off the FSB with it, and actually gained more when I flashed back to 0505, loaded defaults, saved, rebooted, and rebuilt my overclocked Profile again!
Anyone else experience worse clocks on 0602?
just bought this board after a rough RMA process with my P5K Premium. Is this still the X38 board to get or should i look elsewhere?
0602 seems to have loosened NB timings, anyone else confirm this?
You can overclock quad cores much better with this board than the p5w dh deluxe. When the p5w dh deluxe came out last year there weren't any quad cores out yet so the maximus is better optimized towards the current processors. (also the price of the maximus is cheaper than the p5w dh when it first came out ^^)
When I had the p5w dh deluxe I could only overclock the q6600 to around 9x360 with watercooling but with the maximus I could do 9x400 on air (tuniq) easy (didn't test for stability yet though). Thats actually the speed I set it at on the first boot without tweaking voltages lol.
no difference
for me
still running E6850 L720A478@ 500x8@1.456v 4ghz P95 stable
sandra bench is the same
so is everest
Bios 0505 :D :D
http://www.pctunerup.com/up/results/...01090630_5.jpg
you watercooled the NB and SB Langley ? As those temps are the ones I dream off, till now I got 45°C lowest on the SB, 50°C on the NB (passive cooling), though I ripped off the heatsink combo now , awaiting my Arctic cleaning kit to get the putty off as it even resists to brake cleaner...
I did some tests with the Q6600 at 3200Mhz ( 8 x 400 ) ram at 1003mhz with 5-5-5-15 rest of ram timings auto, first results with Transaction booster enabled level 1 + static read control disabled -- Second scores : transaction booster disabled but static read control enabled
Everest Ultimate 4 gives me the following scores :
Read 8355 -- 8604
Write 7288 -- 7288
Copy 7638 -- 7732
Latency 61.2 -- 58.2
3Dmark2005
18888 -- 18900
Like stated before I can run the same FSB with way less chipset voltages if I disable transaction Booster... can anyone contradict these findings ? as I have similar results on my P5K DLX... but to me static read control gives faster ram performance than the transaction booster...
Is it worth it, selling my ASUS Commando and buy Maximus Formula?
I have a Xeon 3230 (ES) + 4GB Crucial PC8500.
Im running 4 x Seagate 320gb in Matrix-RAID. 40gb raid0 and rest = raid5. I´ve read about some raid issues with maximus formula, but cant find it now?
I have the maximus SE with fuzion... and i did'nt see a crappy wb like this... but i want to do my test with all mobo at default, so u see the nb voltage that is set to AUTO on bios (1,6V) i can try to put down some voltage ;)
and the static read control is disable... because imho if u want the fast performance u can try to put up the freq of ddr2 :)
I have the NB and the CPU with liquid, nothing of special! :)
I like the crucial pc8500 2 pair of 2gb and are all ok with high freq and tight timings :D
I don't think the Maximus will bring more to you then your commando does already mate...maybe 3.8ghz and slightly faster timings,...but nothing earthshattering : if all runs fine keep the Commando
@Langley so if I read correctly you use the Fuzion waterblock ? or did you replace with an aftermarket one ?
What is the best BIOS for this board? I'm receiving mine today and was wondering what I should flash to.
0505... i'm going to test out 0602 if i can find it lol.
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/so...ula/MF0602.zip
I'm using 602. It supports the half multi's so I can run my Yorkfield properly. yaay. 505 wouldn't post.
Any updates on the change log for 602 ? 601 runs fine here too , zero issues ( till now lol )
602 here. same 3.8 mhz settings work as in 505. still can't get any higher then 425 fsb for some reason. i've tried 450 x 8, 450 x 6... nothing. nothing at all. i even cleared cmos and just changed those two things. nothing. i'm getting annoyed.i don't understand how the hell all the others are running 500 fsb. maybe it's my ram??? does it suck that bad that it can't handle 1000mhz?
yup.
not this second time around but i have before. i'll give it a shot again later.
When ever I try pushing my 6750 to 3.0 or above the FSBT voltage, NB, and SB voltage all go up to there "high" level (all set at AUTO). Is this normal and ok? Or should I push them back manualy?
Thanks
Thanks for this info now at 3.8GHz stable and at new cas 4 timings Memory at 1021. Still on 504 tried 505 and have recently tried 602 but found couldnt get same OC on them so back to 504 and happy.
Only worry is the NB voltage at 1.79 but my previous voltage was 1.65 so doesnt seem much over will just have to watch temps also.
What is your ram's default speed? 1066?
those volts do seem really high. i have the same settings except 4-4-4-12 on 4 gb of ram and my voltages are much lower!!!
Ok I have just dropped the volts down to
CPU Vcore 1.50
CPU PLL 1.70
NB 1.69
Tried 3dmark01 just 4 initial tests usually stops on Nature if will cause probs later. Need to run Prime now but seems stable at these settings.
The Ballistics are rated 1066Mhz but running at 1021 510Mhz 4,5,5,14 timmings at 2.00V,
Just a question is it faster to have 466Bus x 8 Mutliplier = 3.74Ghz with 1864+ FSB and Memory around 559Mhz @ 5,5,5,15 on 5:6 Divider?
Than 425 x 9 @ 3.825 with 1700 FSB and Memory @510 4,5,5,14 on 5:6 Divider?
They both post about the same results on 3Dmark01 and 06. Have I answered my own question lol?
I have found in my testing that for me 450x8 gives better performance and higher scores in benchmarks compared to 400x9. This runs my cpu at the same speed but my ram is running 1081 when using the 8 divider and it is 1066 when using 9 divider. CPU benchies are higher with the 8 divider, which leads me to believe that these q6600's like higher fsb's.
The reason I ask about your ram speeds is because when you are running a divider of 8, what voltages do you have set for the ram because I can't get stable with that divider for some reason. I would like 450 or 445x8 but it is not happening.
anyone know why my ps/2 keyboard doesn't respond with this motherboard? they keyboard lights up and is functional but when i try to type in an application, the program freezes and causes it not to respond
Guys i just picked one of these up to play with on phase but dont want to use water and phase because it will be too loud for my prime rig.
I currently run my Q6600 G0 at 480x9 with my blackpearl (p5k premium) on phase with my NB air cooled.
Will I be able to hit 480 FSB on the maximus with water cooling the chipset?
Okay, I couldn't get a multi of 9 to work at all on this board, no matter what voltage and FSB I tried.
I tried the following for 400x9, RAM @ 1003MHz 5-5-5-9 (subtimmings auto):
Vcore: 1.47V up to 1.5V
CPU PLL: 1.64V
NB: 1.51V up to 1.55V
DRAM: 2.1V (2.2V in BIOS)
FSB: 1.4V
SB: 1.15V
CPU/NB GTL: Auto
I then lowered my FSB down to 350MHz and I still could not boot into windows.
Then I tried to see how far I could go with a multi of 11x and I was able to reach 11x335MHz w/ similar voltages listed above w/ RAM @ ~1000MHz same timmings.
Could some one explain why I can't reach 3.6GHz (9x400) but I can reach 3.685GHz (11x335)?
It seems depending on your settings for tranaction booster and static read control the voltages for the NB vary enormously... Most users here are at 1.6 NB voltage... I'm at 1.32 for 400FSB with my Q6600@3200 but I disabled the transaction booster and set level 1 ( static read control is enabled and jields for me slightly higher bandwith at 400FSB/1003 ram speeds )... can you try that if it helps to improve ya stability... those are pretty tight timings you are running there... by the way running 2 x 2 Gskills PC8000 ram ( so not 4 dimms )
Alright, that worked. Thanks man.
Another question for you, how do I disable the BIOS from looking for a master IDE hdd? I only have SATA drives in this system, so obviously it wont be able to find one. Every time I reboot it, it halts the startup, it gives me the warning that it cant find one and then I have to press f1 to continue. Its not too big of a deal but it gets annoying after a while. Thanks for your help.
What Bios is everyone using?
I'm at 3.8ghz with this mobo.
1.6v in bios read 1.54 in everest.
Whats correct?
BIOS 0602 and USB devices? I upgraded my BIOS to 0620, and found if I did any overclocking (even 1 MHZ) it would not detect my USB devices, it would hang on detection, or else take 5 minutes then find maybe 4 of the 10 devices that are attached. For instance it might entirely miss the card reader and all 4 drives, or the card reader and 2 of the 4 drives or 1 of the 2 keyboards ...
Basically I have switched back to 0505, wanted to know if anyone else had similar issues?
ERIC
i'm running 602 right now and it seems to be exactly the same as 505 for me.
I had to revert back to 0505 since 0602 gave me video issues.
I’m in RAM Hell. When I first got this board, both of my Ballistix were randomly testing bad in Memtest86+ One stick all the time, the other only after the machine had been on for a few hours. So I put an RMA request in for them, and picked up a pair of Corsair XMS2 sticks to hold me over until the Ballistix get back. First set of Corsairs, BOTH sticks test bad (different bit locations for each stick, swapped slots and verified it wasn’t the motherboard or the slot itself)
So I returned those 2, got ANOTHER 2 Corsairs, 1 of the 2 is bad. Keeping the good one and hoping CompUSA won’t bust my chops about swapping out just the one bad one today. Anyone else running these sticks? Have you had problems? What volts do you guys run these at. They’re rated at 1.9 which sounds low compared to the 2.2 the Ballistix are rated at. At the moment just trying to run them at their rated timings and speed. (DDR2 800 5-5-5-15 timings)
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Grrr.. Ok, so I can set 450 x 8 (3.6 cpu) and Prime95 with the ram set to 900 (underclocked from 1066). I can set the ram to 1082 and the cpu to around 3.25 and prime stable. But as soon as I set the ram and cpu to 450x8 (3.6cpu / 1081memory) things become unstable. I've tried upping the voltages to basically everything, nb, dram, fsbtermination, vcore, etc... Not stable. If I set to 400x9 (3.6cpu / 1066mem) everything is solid. Any ideas?
That sounds very much like the problem I have.
I sent in both the RAM and the motherboard for RMA.
I'm using the same Ballistix and got errors for all of them (Memtest86+).
Strange thing is when I tried some OCZ PC2-8500, it worked just fine with no errors at all.
I'm getting them back today and I will see how it goes.
The Ballistix I have are PC2-8500 5-5-5-15 and I have 4x1GB but I tried just two at a time and still got errors.
This is my Everest Bandwith test with 0602 and 0505
BIOS settings are all the same
480x8 1:1 DDR2-960 2T-4-4-4-5-3-30-3-1-8-3-5-4-6-4-6-Auto-Auto-Auto
0505

0602
http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/8345/602oq4.png
To me, the difference looks minimal. The release note does say the new BIOS improves memory compatibility, although I still cannot run my Ballistix 8500 @ 600Mhz stable, which is very easy on the other borads.
