Is this normal?

This is, as the pics show, after 30 sec of running Orthos. Look at my temps, is that normal? If not, I have a Tuniq Tower 120, what could possibly be wrong? Voltages are all stock. And the temps do get higher within minutes. I am starting to think theres something wrong with my chip.

EDIT: The second pic is with Speedfan and Asus PC Probe II running. What temp should I be paying attention to the most? Just trying to add more info to see if my heat is a serious issue.

EDIT 2: I remounted heatsink out of paranoia and tried to fix my messy case wires for better airflow. Temps3.jpg is what I am now. I am still trying to figure out what to pay attention to as far as which temp is the most important....so many different readings

lots of case cooling i guess. when it hits 40-42c my case is only 30-32c, but you know what. i bet both cores are'nt running that low! ohwell if it fry's in a few months i'll have to go C2D, or what ever AMD's next chip will be ...

@1.476volts I never see above 45c max with my xp-90, however I'm using a 120mm fan on there instead of a 90mm one.

One of these days I'll buy a copper one and again place a 120mm fan, we'll see if thats any better. I live by the might xp-90 w/ 120mm setup, it's great... though not sure what he's using on his xp-90.

Mine's a LCB9E 0630BPMW Opty 180 running "24/7" @ 3025MHz 1,472V, Orthos-stable @ 3096MHz 1,5V (so far)..

just a 92mm, but i have 2 92mm intakes blowing directly at the heatsink :toast:

Holly cra.....! never seen those steppings, sounds more like the ones you can find in 3800+ X2's (those are great by the way).

I can tell you are happy with your opty! :toast: I'm too, this CPU's are amazing overclockers (well a overclocked C2D will kick its butt, but you can't compare the price/performance/overclocking ratio that these late Optys have!!)

Switching to C2D doesn't make to much sense to me, since the Quad core war is about to begin next year. So I better wait and see who wins. :slobber:

i see your @ 1.52v! wth are you cooling it with, and your temps ? i hit 3G 1.52 aswell, but it got WAY to hot :(

I'm on H2O (corsair nautilus 500), My Core temps on Orthos, are

Core 0 ----> 50 - 51 c
Core 1 ----> 56 - 57 c

Which I guess are good because according to Core temp, my max Tcase temp is 59 C, so I'm below it.

All this is with the IHS ON, I haven't removed it, and I don't think I will, I did that once, and it was very easy, and improved my temps a lot (10 c lower on my CCBEE 0615 EPMW), but since this one is doing good with IHS, no reason to do that.:)

Wow man, thats too hot!! See your TCASE MAX on core temp?? I think you should try to keep your temps below 59 c (thats what is yours showing). My CPU is exactly the same as yours on Core temp. I'm on watercooling though, but still, I've seen people having our steppings and having air cooling like you having way lower temps than you. You are "only" at 2.8 ghz, your temps should be more like if you were at 3.0 ghz.

Here are my 2 cents:

1- I noticed you use PC probe, so you may have an ASUS mobo right?, I didn't have good experiences with it (I had a a8n-32 sli). Be careful, ASUS mobos tend to OVERVOLT whatever you set as Vcore on your bios. My a8n32-sli, overvolted by 0.0625 to whatever I had set on there.

2- Have you used a good TIM? Maybe AS5? how did you applied it? little drop of the size of a grain of rice in the middle? Have you checked the heatsink is making good contact with the CPU?. Well, at the end, Air cooling has a limit too.....

Hope this helps you a little.... Hope you can lower those temps! Your cpu has potential for 3.0!, so keep trying!! :toast:

Its hot, yeah, but it is where its suppose to be @ those speeds and vcore I guess. Keep in mind those are Core temp readings, which means they are measured directly from the internal core and not from mobo temp sensor.

I see you have nice temp - in the order of the 40's - with your xp-90, nice dude!! but.... I have a concern, is that your mobo sensor temp??, have you checked your temp under full load with ORTHOS (Both cores), with the little program core temp? http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/ , you may find a surprise there. :stick:

I have done more testing on my 165, so far I am able to boot 334x9 1.45V. It isnt very stable and the more volts I throw at it it just gets hotter. I have my ram set to auto in my bios. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good thread that will go over ram settings? I would prefer one using my motherboard. I really want to get stable @3+.

Your not going to hit htt 334 prime stable on air. Trust me I tried ;) on a Tuniq right now also.

Yep, I was about to ask the samething. 3dmarks won't stress your overclock as much as Orthos. By the way, tried S&M, and that mutha really cooked my CPU! It makes your CPU way hotter than any other test I tried before (specially the FPU test). Get it here :

Ya, he has the same stepping as mine and it boots into windows no problem on high overclocks but not stable at all for a 24/7 overclock but I'll be quite impressed if he does 12hr prime 3ghz with less then 1.55v air.

I have that stepping on my other Opty, and I've never being able to hit 3.0 ghz, not even cranking the vcore up to 1.6 volts. It will do 2.95 max with 1.55 v core (and gets very hot, even without IHS and watercooling). I think other steppings are better, like my most recent one the XPMW, I've seen the kings are usually 0617 FPMW's and 0610

April

Just received my new opty 170, stepping CCBBE 0615EPMW. Currently priming at 270x10 @ 1.35v on water. I came from an opty 165 that needed 1.6v to do 2700, so I'm happy so far. Temps are good: 40 degrees load on both cores on water, and IHS still on. I might remove it though if temps get too high.
