Thanks for the help! I'll revert back and see if that changes anything.. When I first got my w3680 xeon es I started at 5400mhz , then 5577mhz , 5612mhz on up to 5800mhz all on f4. Then I got a brand new i7 980x es q3fe.. perfect condition. Decided to use f6 before I installed the chip and now I cant overclock at all.. weird.. for 5800mhz I used 1.856 - 1.870v It will run at 1.776v at around 5500mhz though. Thanks again for the help.. I even tried increasing the qpi / vtt and all that did was create even more lockups.. Had to reduce it to 1.40v for anything to work..

Also, I noticed that seating the f1 ln2 pot the correct way everytime would help with stability..
There has been only a few bsod's and I'm also thinking I could have a memory problem with these dominator gt's

Really nice man! :) I just confirmed.. Back up to 5800mhz f4 is better although the i7 980x es q4fe is still running the same.. not very good and cant figure out why.. Maybe I have some memory settings wrong or something..

Damn these chips are nice!! What batch do you have? I can do that as well, but dont the vcore scare you?? Settling for 4.5ghz HT with a 1.424 vcore, still over intels max vcore of 1.4 but only slightly

Hiho,

the DRAM reference voltages in the BIOS are defaulting to 0.75V on the X58A-UD7, as we can all see. However, what are they really set to in Auto mode? This can be absolutely crucial, I remember on the P6T Deluxe deviating too much from 50% VDIMM was causing trouble quickly.

I just set them all to 0.83V to make sure they are exactly half of the 1.66V I run my Corsairs at.

Any idea what the BIOS is doing? ET6 apparently doesn't really read out the true values.

Whats the max on the dram reference voltage you think? I've tried a little more... Just testing right now.. My xeon w3680 is back to normal.. testing the i7 980x right now and so far 3dmark 06 stable at 5700mhz.. I'll post some stuff in a bit.. Anything past 1.74v on the memory and windows wont boot.. 1.4v on the vtt seems good though.. Besides using the hard mod is there anything else that will help.. what do you guys think? Hicookie, what do you think..

Bodar: More DRAM reference voltage won't boost overclockability. It is defined to be 50% VDIMM, since it represents the distinguishing line betwen what's a logical "1" or "0", like the GTL reference lines on Socket 775.

By all means this reference should never be crossed by overshoot and undershoot of the DDR3 module's data and adress lines, it'd mean data corruption.

What I am getting at is: Can I rely on the BIOS keeping the references at 50% VDIMM no matter what I am setting VDIMM to? Or do I have to set them manually to make SURE they are what they're supposed to be?

That's what I was thinking.. Setting them manually.. They actually dont change at all no matter what I set the vdimm to.. for ln2 I use 1.74v and the corsair dominator gt.. They are always at 0.75v
It's just a weird thing I guess.. If I dont raise them I get more instability..

When left in auto, you will see .75 in easytune always as this is default amount of 1.5V default voltage. They will be .825 at 1.65 if left in auto. If you want to manually set them, please set .75 at 1.50, then raise your ram voltage to 1.65 and you will see them automatically increase as you manually raise the Vdimm value.

Same applies with MCH and CPU Ref, then are automatically adjusted with their respective voltages - Vtt in this instance.

CPU Termination (Vtt) Automatically changes the following if manually set >>>

CPU Reference Voltage (.63% of Default Vtt/1.20) .76 ET

Maybe that means you are getting the overclockability you're supposed to get if the too low references weren't limiting you so far. For your 1.74 you'd need 0.87 VDimmRef.

I will see how it goes for me, I am running 3x2 GB Corsair XMS3-1600 CL7 sticks (Ver 2.1 with Elpida RAM ICs) here at 1810. I'll report any kind of changed behavior, in case someone else can refer to what I see and improve something.

I'm runninc a C0 i7-920 at 21x181 currently and BIOS F6...by far not as extremely high as your 6core.

I was wondering.. What kind of resistor do you need for the ud7 mod... 50k , 100k vr resistor? Where can I buy this? surface mount? trimmer? part number? Any help would be appreciated! :)

So are you talking about the difference between easy tune and the bios.. I dont really use easy tune so what do you think would be good so far as bios settings.. easy tune is cool for increasing the core clock but I get lockups when I mess with any voltage settings.. I'm going to try .87 and see what the difference is.. The default of .75 was giving me a few bsod's and lockups at anything over 5700mhz..

When working on cpu oc, I usually put everthing memory v at the first pink setting and forget about it.
As covered by Lsdmeasap above - I can confirm the bios does adjust to keep the minimum delta's between v's.
Worked well for me so far - but I'm on chilled water not ln2 - YMMV.

I have a question about changing CPU speed on Windows. For exam, i have 2 settings ( 2.6 GHz and 3.6 GHz ) ... When i playing the game, quickly i set my CPU Speed to 3.6 Ghz setting. When i surfing the "www", quickly i set my CPU Speed to 2.6 GHz on Windows. I'll NOT restart and changing BIOS settings for overclock ... Do you suggest any program thats ?

easytune6 supports 'in windows" changing bclock but its probably not quick enough for what you want.

What you need, it to use dynamic Vcore, and then the system will adjust the OC (from 12 to 21 multi) and vCore, dynamically according to the needs. Do this:
- Sett the VCore to "Normal"
-Sett the Dynamic vCore (DVID) to +0.05000% (you may need less or more depending on your CPU and OC)
- Set the C3/C6/C7 to "enable"
- Set the EIST to "enable"

Go to Control panel, and set the Widows power option to "Balanced".

This seams to end up as 0.830v and the rest on 0.820v, no matter what RAM timing or multi(x8 or x10) I've tired, on air too. But my X5650 which is really picky on RAM seams to be running more stable with x10 RAM when i set "all on first pink".

some points of information/tips for people with this board:

- i ordered a UD7 X58A from Newegg on March 26 2010. It would not boot with a 980X. Turns out it had BIOS F2 (on a board that is described on Gigabyte's website as "Supports new generation Intel 32nm 6-core processors." Put in a i7 920 and it booted just fine, flashed to F6A and now it is happy with the 980X. Any offers for the i7 920?

- decided to try booting off my current Win 7 x64 boot drive that was on my Gigabyte P-45 UD3R since the two boards have the same disk controller (ICH10R) and it booted just fine--the only drivers that were not installed automatically were the NEC chip with the USB 3.0 and 6GB SATA 3.

Ya, that's what I meant. Because your post above, and many other users get confused when they see Easytune values for Ref's remaining the same always. So that is just meant to help clarify why they appear to be the same all the time because they are % of stock value based on other voltages. If you vary the % used, easytune will reflect that in windows.

Like if you set Vdimm to 1.5, then change the Dimm Ref value to .80 for example, then raise your Vdimm back to 1.65 and go into windows you will see easytune showing the .80 you set instead of .75 default. Of course the actual voltage value will not be .80 once you raise the Vdimm back to 1.65, but easytune will still show .80 as that is the % used based off default 1.5

Ok.. Just had a huge scare.. did an LN2 session tonight and once I got up to -145c on the xeon w3680 at 5800mhz I ran 3dmark 06.. it completed and then the board just froze and turned off.. I've been getting the 88 post code all night, even after I took the chip out and everything dried out.. it just now booted up fine.. wow.. so freaked out.. thought it was RMA time for me.. I would really like to know what kind of resistor I need to solder so I can up the clock limit.. 5800mhz is my max and it's frustrating.. How am I supposed to waste all this LN2 if I cant go higher.. If someone knows where I can buy this please advise.. :)

I think it is 8K, not sure though. I know there is a thread here on it, and Hicookie posted a mod image for it as well.

as for VDIMM and their references, I don't see a reason anymore in using ET6 anymore unless you're going for the "Big balls" approach on overclocks that you can't use 24/7 anyway.

I'd say just set the DDR3 references to 50% VDIMM...nothing else makes sense. You wouldn't want to boot the system on potentially less stable settings and have ET6 do it in Windows.

With the references at 0.83V I am getting a somewhat more stable GFlops performance in Linx 64 bit on Windows Server 2003, especially the first pass isn't so low anymore to my surprise. I always took it was a warm up run. ^.^

I am currently struggling a bit to get higher memory clock, but it's prolly pointless anyway. 3820 on the QPI takes roughly 1.475V.

Ya I only use Easytune for testing small various things, or checking a voltage change to be sure it was made. Otherwise not really all that useful to us real overclockers.

Did you try QPI Slow mode? Might help, but not sure how that would affect any memory benchmark you may be trying to achieve.

I am thinking about buying a Microsoft X4 keyboard (usb) but a friend of mine told me it wouldn´t work while the system is booting because it takes a too long time to get initialized, so I couldn´t hit "Del" to get in the BIOS. I should better use a PS2-keyboard.
Does anyone have experiences about that issue?

Some will work, some will not. If you get it be sure you enable USB Keyboard support in the BIOS and Legacy USB Support, before you switch keyboards.

Sorry I have not heard any reports either way on that specific keyboard though. I am using a USB Microsoft Keyboard (Natural Ergo 4000) myself though and don't have any problems with it

It wont be a problem at the boot, bios reads usb devices before it exit the bios screen so hit del wont be a problem. Tho if you want to press like ctrl alt del to reboot or press any key for choose between failsafe options you need to enable usb keyboard support in bios.

F4 BIOS already support 980X fully. if you want do some benchmark

I am very frustrated. My issue is exactly as the op reports

there are 2 possibly separate issues

1) random post failure at high bclk with fans powering off and bios warning

2) random c1 post reset- where after the post beep but before windows loads, the mono will click to c1 and start the post again. Often this gas no associated message.

The first issue I have only seen at high bclk on confirmed 24h stable settings and seemed initially to be an oversensiyivity to ioh voltage- eg more prevalent past 1.18 v ( 2 mobos tested) the issue although random was reproducible at stock speeds with that voltage tweak. There may be other factors involved though

the second issue seems independent of bclk and is less reproducible but certainly can occur at stock settings. Seems very random an independent of voltages and clocks

Hicookie: If there is a beta bios that's better for benching the 980x I'd like to try it. :up:

after some fooling around i managed to recreate this ioh volt problem if it's higher then 1.24v it results in coldboot but only if EuP is disabled. If EuP is enabled there is no problem that's why i havent noticed it before since i've had it enabled all the time.

You find it under the power options menu , i don't really know what it does tho. More then that everything turns off when you shutdown even the led on the start button at the mobo (when disabled this stays on). It has no effect on performance whatsoever. So you should enable it since it solves this problem :O

seems that RAZER peripherals might be having some conflicts for some users. I have both razer lycosa keyboard and deathadder mouse. can anyone else shed light on this issue?

My UD 7 seems to go to C1 after turning the rig on for the first time and then start the posting again, stopping at C1 for a moment and then continue into the normal BIOS/boot procedure at BCLK 181.

The initial posting restart is odd, assuming I am not misinterpreting it.

My PSU is a Coba Nitrox 750W. A very nice PSU BTW, basically identical to the Thermaltake Toughpower, but a 230V only version of a German importer.

I'll give it a shot at enabling EuP as soon as I can reboot in 2 hours. ^.^

C1 is usually related to memory so try re-seating RAM or try different RAM as well
also try playing with VTT and vdimm

That's fairly moderate and never caused the slightest hint on issues.

the real issue is when it goes back to c1 AFTER displaying the splash screen- ie after the post "beep"

that is th problem- not the nornmal cycling that occurs before the beep.

I have had ti to go c1 for example while its initialising the raid array and listing all the drives right before the OS loads...

Not sur eif this sheds light on the issue, but I had an oddity with my Lycosa and a Copperhead on my previous ASUS P6T Del. V2.

When plugging both ointo the same pair of USB ports, the Copperhead's motions were interpreted as keystrokes by the BIOS. That's absolutely weird. But I never reported it, since moving one of the devices to another USB pair wasn't a real poroblem. Then again noone ever bothered to fix it...then again the P6T Del. had problems and a BIOS fix for the G15.

Dunno what they are screwing up with keyboards recently.

But Ic an tellt hat much, the Logitech support guy in the G19 thread is quite a loser. DISABLING higher current support is LOL. Idiotic idea...it just means you can draw more juice off the ports but has no influence on the data signals on the other two pins of the USB port, and no influence on the voltage either. :ROTF:

A valid point tho is the possibility that the USB mode recognition for the device (USB 1 or 2) might detect the wrong mode. Very much like SATA 2 devices on some SATA 1 controllers.

I have some significant progress. thankyou to everyone who has contributed so far.

Test: to determine the significance of the following settings on boot stability: EUP enable, usb mouse support disable, usb keyboard support disable, ioh at 1.26

Thankyou to the person above who noticed that high ioh with EUP on is mroe stable than off.

Method: to use relatively low cpu and ram settings to test motherboard boot stability only.

bclk 200
ioh at 1.26
cpu multi 19 (3.8 ghz)
Ram 8-8-8-20 2T x8 multi.
qpi/vtt 1.35
vcore 1.33
cpu pll 1.88
pci-e 1.5
vdimm 1.66

TOGGLE between: [EUP ON and USB keyboard and mouse DISABLED].... AND..... [EUP OFF with USB key and mouse ENABLED]

For each test power on case key pressed, machine allowed to boot to OS, then shutdown from os.

Results:
[EUP ON, mouse and key support off] 18 tests all PASS (successful boot to os and no red screen bios warning)

[EUP OFF, mouse and keyb support on] 5 tests all FAIL ( power on, c1, c1, c1, fans and mobo complete power off... reboot c1, c1, c1 all poiwer off, -> bios warning

conclusions:

this supports the theory that ioh 1.2 or more is consistently unstable during boot when EUP is OFF and mouse and keyboard legacy support is on. further testing is needed and this may reflect a specific hardware compatibility issue. either EUP or legacy keyboard/mouse or both may play a role.

EDIT: i still occasionally get a long lag on the POST 'splash screen'. anyone else have this sometimes?

I have some significant progress. thankyou to everyone who has contributed so far.

Test: to determine the significance of the following settings on boot stability: EUP enable, usb mouse support disable, usb keyboard support disable, ioh at 1.26

Thankyou to the person above who noticed that high ioh with EUP on is mroe stable than off.

Method: to use relatively low cpu and ram settings to test motherboard boot stability only.

bclk 200
ioh at 1.26
cpu multi 19 (3.8 ghz)
Ram 8-8-8-20 2T x8 multi.
qpi/vtt 1.35
vcore 1.33
cpu pll 1.88
pci-e 1.5
vdimm 1.66

TOGGLE between: [EUP ON and USB keyboard and mouse DISABLED].... AND..... [EUP OFF with USB key and mouse ENABLED]

For each test power on case key pressed, machine allowed to boot to OS, then shutdown from os.

Results:
[EUP ON, mouse and key support off] 18 tests all PASS (successful boot to os and no red screen bios warning)

[EUP OFF, mouse and keyb support on] 5 tests all FAIL ( power on, c1, c1, c1, fans and mobo complete power off... reboot c1, c1, c1 all poiwer off, -> bios warning

conclusions:

this supports the theory that ioh 1.2 or more is consistently unstable during boot when EUP is OFF and mouse and keyboard legacy support is on. further testing is needed and this may reflect a specific hardware compatibility issue. either EUP or legacy keyboard/mouse or both may play a role.

EDIT: i still occasionally get a long lag on the POST 'splash screen'. anyone else have this sometimes?

If i have legancy usb storage enabled it sometimes take some time for it to get past the detecting of my external hdds. But with it disabled i dont have slow boot screen. Did you test with EuP enabled and usb keyboard enabled? it work's fine for me. For me EuP is the vital settning to not get this coldboot. with usb keyboard and mouse enable it works just fine as long as EuP is enabled.

i use an intel ssd 80 gb g2 i havent noticed the problem tho i dont restart that often when i dont oc :P . But its probably due detection of any usb device you have i guess.

Anyone pimping the new BIOS? Got any feedback? I'm a bit reluctant to change from the F6x at present.

using it atm no oc improve atleast not at 24/7 basis tho no degrade either so. Go on try it

palmeasus is that insane overclock of yours running on 4 or 8 cores? what voltages did you need?

I am still having issues getting my 920 to 4.6 with Ht on ..... 4.5 is rock solid with 1.38v and hits low 60's c after an hour or more of linX. Trying to push to 4.6 has resulted in corrupted OS several times on Win7 Pro, I am still using bios F4 as the more recent ones have required more VCore for the same O/C. I have mot tried the latest, but I will this weekend. Here are my settings, can you guys see anything that might help me over the 4.6 hurtle.

Sup man. Havent been around here in months. I read your post and saw low 60's 1.8 linx and was like WOW. I see you moved to water now though. Without reading the past months worth of threads, and if i remember correctly, the change to water really didnt get you much more of an OC, just great temps right? I think its about time to go to a 980 and shoot for 4.5. Maybe 24GB of ram too :0 and maybe many new Raptor 600GB in RAID. And a few 480's :yepp: :yepp::D i wonder how 5 600gb Raptors in RAID5 would perform? Sheesh, All of that would be a $4600 upgrade (980x, 24GB, 5x Rapt 600gb, 2x 480's)

its on 4 cores so it aint that insane :P i need a vcore on 1.42v for 4.3 ghz HT ON and 1.47 for 4.4 ghz HT On so kinda bad chip actually :P qpi volt is set to 1.53v , dram , 1.64 dramref volts 0.820 , pcie volt 1.6 , ioh 1.18 , cpu pll 1.84 rest on auto

well it wasnt needed for the oc just experementing. Tho the qpi volt is necessary since i have the uincore this high.

i havent used one, but i would think the h50 would be horrible. It takes a pretty good wc loop to beat a TRUE. No way those compact integrated wc units are gonna come close.

There is bios version"F6 Test 2" which is the latest candidate to be used during GO OC. All can try OC with it :up: and feedback your comments.

Got some Crucial ECC-RAM CT3KIT25672BA1067 to go with my X5650, and it seams to be working fine on this MB :)

These sticks are rated as @1066MHz CL7, but seams to be OCing pretty easy to @1400MHz CL7 1.60v. This is no speed-monster, but I'm hoping to get more stability with ECC. Either this CPU or this RAM belongs at home on this MB (I'm waiting for a OC-able double socket MB to hit the marked, hopefully soon), but it is nice to see it working fine for now.

I've just got these sticks, and haven't done any serious testing for finding the limits/potentials yet, but it looks promising already. :)

folks, anyone else having a problem with one or more USB controllers on this board spontaneously disabling and reporting code 43 errors in windows device manager? is this possibly a problem with too low volts on the IOH or something like that? running win 7 x64.

when ocing i usually run with these disabled.

Yo guys! :) So the soldering is done.. 20k resistor.. It's weird though.. Hicookie said that the default was 15k and if you solder the resistor on it will be 8k.. Not that there's much of a difference but my multimeter is showing 9k? huh.. Hope I did'nt mess something up. I'm going to see how this chip overclocks now under LN2 in a bit.. cheers!!
