my problem is only with CPU and system temperature, they always seem too high for me to continue overclocking the system.
so i think for my daily use 4.3GHz 205x21 is about the limit i'm comfortable with.

My chip won't even post at that speed with that voltage. I think I might buy a couple Xeon's and just sell the ones that don't clock good.

Important note for people running 12GB on the DFI - it needs quite a lot of IOH voltage to run.
With 200x20 on the CPU and 8x dram divider (1600Mhz), I get a BSOD and reboot with prime large after a few minutes. Raising the IOHs to 1,25V (both) I am now into 2h already.
Temps are fine, mips blocks on NB and PWM.

Also watch out, some of the later boards have faulty stock PWM cooling. My own personal DFI that I got as soon as it was available actually touches the dual pulse chips, thus reducing the heatload.
The last ones I got DIDN'T touch these chips, causing the board to overheat and crash with OC and stock VRM cooling.

what is the most stable bios right now?

hi there, i have a problem using DFI LP UT X58-T3eH8. Since the first time i've tried to boot, it just shows CF POST Code. i've tried to remove CMOS battery, clear CMOS and other things, but nothing worked. until now, it still can't boot. what should i do? thanks a lot.

What color slots do you have ram in? They should be in Green. If that doesn't work try to just boot with 1 stick in a green slot.

Well, I had to up the NB volts to 1,3 to keep it from BSODing at prime large FFT. Maybe a bad northbridge :shrug:

On my board there is a clearly visible gap between the pwm sink and the puls chips. A thin grey piece of something hangs in the air between them. Does anyone with a correctly mounted cooler have a clear picture of how this should look like ?
My board works ok, but needs a dedicated 70mm fan directed right at the puls chips to allow any kind of oc.

Also be aware that the X58 and this board specifically seem to be very sensitive to DIMM placement, try numbering each individual stick 1,2,3,etc and place them in different configurations until it works... this should be all it needs. I had the same problem it was very picky with my Corsair 1600C8 stuff.

@sniper, should be no gap there and shouldn't really need much fan to keep it cool. The grey piece is the tim and should be touching both the heatsink and chips. Heres the best pic I could get. kinda hard because it was running and in case but here ya go

@WeHa, what ram do you have? If this is first time maybe check the bios see what version and date it is. If you can get it to boot and work fine with 1 stick I would update the bios to latest 7/24 beta. Just keep trying sounds like its not DoA so I'm sure it will work.

Yes, this is exactly what I'm talking about. The temperature is measured from those dual pulse modulator chips. If they are running w/o the heatsink making contact and without a fan blowing onto them, they will heat up more and more and cause the Vcore to break down when they reach approx. 110C, causing the system to BSOD or reboot.

The CPL-4-50 inductors have no temperature measuring ability built into them.

Really? Funny, because it's definitely those chips that are overheating. The VRMs themselves are cooled well with the stock sink.

The 4-50s have always ran hot. They are designed to dissipate up to 160A per chip. That's what made the early PWM waterblocks that contacted them and the slave chips a waste of money. The only thing that was accomplished was heating up the water.

Dude, I am telling you, they need to be cooled for high loads. I checked contact of the stock sink with the vrms, it was perfect. Still, the vrm overheated and broke down without a fan. With a mips PWM block that cools the two fat chips as well everything is fine.

My only intention of the original post was to correct the misinformation that the reported PWM temperature was the inductor temperature. Not the plus of minus of cooling the inductors.

jcool praz is right

this is a known fact and was discussed even during the x38/x48's days
that the cpl chip doesnt need to be cooled and theres no internal temp reading from them..

almost everybody who blew their board after replacing the tim on their pwms
was because they had too much contact with the cpl chip.

Hey Praz you seem like you know alot about the board and its components, DFI already RMA'ed my board and repaired it saying there was a faulty component. Well it just died again earlier today making a popping noise. Exact same thing as last time. You have any idea what could die so easily on this board?

Sure, if you say so - I only do a customer build with the DFI every other week, what do I know...

My observations leave zero room for interpretation - the cpl chips overheat if they are not properly cooled. You guys just don't notice because most here probably have 2000RPM case fans, CPU fans etc. With case/rad fans running at 500-600rpm and water cooled CPU, it just does not work w/o cooling the big fat suckers :p:

nope nothing on it

heck even worse actually cause i have a coolit freezone at the top of the cpu...
no fan at all.

my observation is based on having 4 dfi'x x58's two of them running in a watercooled case rig and two for bench. no need at all.

to reduce the pwm temps i have a hr05 +70mm fan on it.
thats about it.

Does this board support Xeon E5520? I mean does the bios allow unlocked multis, OC & memory divider options with this xeon?

The main reason I prefer E5520 over W3520 is the heat output, 80W vs 130W.

I had different experience. Using 2/17 and 2/27 CPU needed 1.36V VTT set (1.376 read) for 4GHz (200x20). With 5/08, 6/19 and now 7/24 it needs only 1.29V VTT (1.312) for 4-4.2GHz (200x20-21) and 1.31V VTT (1.328) for 4.2-4.4GHz (210x20-21)

proc speeds are nodiff.
overall the new bios takes a huge hit on latency and mem bandwidth.

for all the bios for under 1700mhz mem speed my vtt is 1.21v right up to 4.5ghz for elpida hypers
so again it depends on ure mem

You are right, but it definitely helped, lowered temps for sure a bit, and now I'm in Intel's specs safe range.

Im using 7/24.... I have been trying to get this chip down, but it seems to be a dud for 4ghz range, at least as far as prime95 is concerned.

Just use Shutdown temperature or something similar. I disabled thermal management, but set shutdown temp @ 100 deg.C, to be safe. :yepp:

Sure. TM enabled only throttles when a certain temp is reached, I haven't checked on the UT but in my DFI x58 JR that temp is around 85C.

But like donmarkoni said, you can disable TM and use your own shutdown temperature to be sure it won't throttle.

wierd.... because my 21x mult. is jumping with TM enabled. my cores don't get higher than 70 degrees......100% stressed. (saw it with i7turbo)

Have you tried HyperPi32M? It is very "picky" and accurate test for MEM/IMC-stability on my setup. But it is not as accurate on Core stability, tho.

My 2nd board (2nd RMA) should be here tomorrow. Actually kinda scared to try it again though, because I gotta leave on the road with it in a week. Might just bring the new Athlon rig instead

I used Memtest86+ 3.0 beta 3 and I passed 15 passes of it without any error with my settings, when I get into windows and run LinX max memory I fail with a BSOD and get code 124, which I have found to be VTT/Bclk related.

Could it be that this code is also vcore related as well?

Damn, got my board back I think it's probably from someone on here from RMA lol!! The back metal pieces are all rusty probably from phase and the bow is bowed like a U. But it works, this one buzzes too though. Guess they just all buzz underload. But man, finally got a SSD and it freakin flys now

think u guys dont know how to use it

to find the vtt voltage
u need to run lower mem skews
u will see the difference

its the same way we use to test skews for REX.

remember the board bios has its limit depending on ure ram chipset
my rams will not do more than 2050 CL7 2-4 hours prime stable.
2100mhz is a no go

but it was a different story with my kingston T1's. which did 2150mhz CL8 stable

Try leaving Vdroop control on enable... it droops but it doesn't buzz (as loud)

After trying 4.3GHZ(205x21) 1.28v and 4.2GHZ(210x20) 1.24v for a while, missed my low-volt summer OC, and had to check it out again.
Summer is over and it is running so cool at lower ambient that it is really tempting to run @4GHZ (with passive cooling :) ? ) for 24/7.


UnCore:QPI 1:1. both at x18, still running strong with VVT=1.21v(BIOS set) :cool:
RAM at x4, @1688 7-8-7-20 1T 1.65v

well since i am using elpida hypers
the best bios is 04/28

the mem skews are based on bootup clocks
and the vtt is corresponds to it

example for 2050 CL7 to get RTL 53 on Channel A u need to use bootup bclk 185
for set bclk 205
this is tricky as its borderline.
bootup bclk is between -20 to -5 of set bclk. vtt is corresponding to this
so what vtt or dram dq vref i should set??
this takes time and need to do a lot of testing
but overall its either channel dqvref Channel A + 3.0% with cmd Vref + 120 or -2.5% with cmd vref 110
this will pass memtest86+ but will have some i/o bsods aka nvidia/raid etc on boot ramdomly. so channel B and C need to be set also. to get optimal rtl of 53/56/58 at vtt 1.44v set.

for X58 u need to always test on different boots. cold boot, hot boot. resets etc.

testing of vtt. easy set bootup to 185 for the above with no adjustments and lower vdimm.
for me i need 1.65v which is proven by prime. so i set 1.635.
u can see errors in test 2. which correct vtt will reduce it.

in REx 775 mobo's we tested the same way.undervolting certain voltages to find the others. thats how u test with memtest86+ 3.0. previous memtest versions was not very sensitive. this is especially to mem skews and rtl's of the uncore.

look at everybody overclocking its so boring all high cpu clocks with slow mem ..
progress on x58 overclocking would be with higher cpu clock with high mem speeds
until to date only one person has done 2050 4.3ghz 24hours prime stable on evga classified
what about 4.4ghz 2100mhz etc..

Why do you want high mem speed over cpu Mhz ? Most test show that increasing cpu Mhz gives way more performance than increasing mem speed.

Running high mem speed also requires high uncore clocks, wich normally requires high vtt volts, something not everbody feels comfortable with.

Whats the point of running such high ram clocks on i7 when either 1600c8 or 2200c7 wont make any diffenece in everyday pc use other than benchmarks :shrug:

dunno about u but when i overclock i want everything to be overclocked equally.

hence ram, qpi, uncore and proc.

overclocking proc on x58 even a retard can do it by just upping voltage with a good proc and good cooling
the rest is different story. and the ppl who do it will actually feel the difference in each bios.
most bioses for any mobo the biggest difference is the ram performance and overclocking

High MEM speed is cool for testing&benching, but it is not exactly the sweet spot for 24/7. My sticks can run stable at 2150MHZ CL9 with much better benching numbers, but it needs a good deal more VVT to run stable for 24/7.

I had a hard time to track the effect of high RAM speed on my daily applications, but it is cool to run on the edge with x5 MEM, just for the heck of it. The only problem is that x5 RAM is far from the sweet spot for total 24/7 OC.

In my experience and on my setup, the 1.32v VVT needed for stability of x5 MEM puts 3 degrees on CPU and 5 degrees on PWM/temp, both at Idle. This extra heat saved on a 1.2v VVT for x4 MEM can be used for better OC on CPU, for sure. So it is safe to say that running MEM at x5 is not exactly the sweet spot for 24/7, at least on my setup.

High MEM speed is cool for testing&benching, but it is not exactly the sweet spot for 24/7. My sticks can run stable at 2150MHZ CL9 with much better benching numbers, but it needs a good deal more VVT to run stable for 24/7.

I had a hard time to track the effect of high RAM speed on my daily applications, but it is cool to run on the edge with x5 MEM, just for the heck of it. The only problem is that x5 RAM is far from the sweet spot for total 24/7 OC.

In my experience and on my setup, the 1.32v VVT needed for stability of x5 MEM puts 3 degrees on CPU and 5 degrees on PWM/temp, both at Idle. This extra heat saved on a 1.2v VVT for x4 MEM can be used for better OC on CPU, for sure. So it is safe to say that running MEM at x5 is not exactly the sweet spot for 24/7, at least on my setup.

post a 2150 C9 4.5ghz. .. u havent even tried stability and gave up because u assumed the vtt was hindering u..

lol i am runnign 4.3ghz 2.1k CL7 24/7 non stop for 5 months. with more than 100 hours of stressing on my mobo/proc and rams.

challenge.. post dram 2050 C7/C8/C9 prime 8 hours stable 4.3ghz HT On/OFF..

hint hint it isnt the vtt thats causing the issue.

the dfi mobo and evga is a dram overclocking king.
compare to gaygay and asus.

also another note on some of the xeons and 950
they have higher multis on cpu

whats stopping anybody from running 4.4ghz 200bclkx22 with dram at 2k C7..

y 4.4ghz 1600mhz is the same as 920 4.2ghz dram 1600mhz while the 920 has no issue to run 4.2ghz 2000mhz CL7
but the 950 does..
all this is based on idiotic overclocking by increasing voltages only.

Sure, I see your point about pushing the edges, and I'm glad someone does. But for me its all about performance, and if I have to choose between cpu mhz and mem speed (and I do), I choose cpu mhz every time.

Personally, I dont have a clue dqvref does, and so far I'v managed ok without it. Would I like to know it, sure, but I dont have the time (yet) to learn all about mem tuning.

have u guys actually tried stock cpu speeds with dram 1066,1333,1600,1866 and hardest of all 2133mhz?/

hint hint 2133mhz .. u need to adjust other settings..
not so direct as to voltage alone.

no u wouldnt be saying that if u think it more thoroughly
ure case is true if all dram manufacturers collapsed and there was only one chipset in the market.
what if down the line u upgraded ure rams by adding another 6gb's but the chipsets were different..
thats when u would be gratefull on subtimings.

Seriously I hate ram tuning. Neither do I understand it properly (on x58 at least) nor do I have the time to get into it.
Just buy two matching 6GB kits with either HCF0 or Hypers and you can run high Mhz pretty hassle-free, that's my approach anyways :D

Ram tuning is somewhat the holy grail of oc, and I admire those who have the skills and time to learn it, but the time part excludes me.
I enjoy tinkering with my cooling, running prime/linx trying too achive my ultimate goal, as high as possible performance with as little nois as possible.

Thanks for the input, but I'm on linux atm so HyperPi32M won't work. But I found a proggy called memtester which seems pretty thorough. We'll see what and if it finds something.

Same here..

Oddly enough plugging in the floppy power connector just below the mosfets fixed all of my problems.

Now stability testing 200x20 1.35v (in bios) 1.3v vtt.

personally i have both of the floppy connector connected.

reason being is cause i am running
gtx285 slied ( 8pin +6pin)
wc system with a modified mcp655
coolitfreezone elite
6 hdd+nczx fan controller+antec veris elite

all with a hx1000 psu. the rail distribution i connected all the modular cables after testing a few times to get the highest stable 12v voltage and connecting the two floppy connectors helped a lot.

6 HDD (4 300GB VRaptors Raid 0, 2 storage drives currently, gonna set my SSDs back up after I get all this stability testing outta way), 2 4870X2s, liquid loop with single pump, triple rad, and 12GB of RAM.

Wow I think it is helping! PWM's don't make any noice with droop disabled, barely drops at all and priming 4.5ghz HT 1.4v! It used to crash at 1.50v

12v is rock solid still, kind of odd old board was 12.26v, this one is 11.96v

CPU temp is pretty warm at above specs priming like 85c max so far. Radiator is pretty warm too. Need more radiator

Ok, so if SG show me 12.22v of the +12v rail under load, is it necessary to plug in the floppy power connector?

Sable rail is more important than the high value.

I have been using just one floppy connectors for a long while, and 12v lane has been running pretty stable at 11.96v, but it could drop down to 11.90v, and I have seen 11.83v under heavy load a few times, too.

I have connected both of the now, and after trying a couple of combinations, got the most stable lane by connecting them to the connectors closest to the blue connectors (PCI-e connectors) on HX1000W. It make sense according HX-1000 Rail Distribution Diagram , too.

I have to test more to conclude, but after trying a few of old profiles, I couldn't see any effect on the Vcore or temperature yet.
The rail seams to be more stable now, it has been staying on 11.96v all the way on this run:

One thing I found was that after i replaced the 8800GTX with a HD 4870 1GB on my T3eH8, it no longer had the resetting of the "pre-boot" process where I see the debug LED characters change from 3C or something like that to FF (the final stable state).

I just picked up an i7 920 DO. Working on finding the max it can do. I think I have RealTemp calibrated right. If so temps seem good. Just wish I could get the vcore lower. Anything less than 1.375 causes the systeem to crash.

I did a bit more tweaking. Passed 10 goes of IntelBurnTest. Got vcore at 1.36 goes to 1.328 under load, that is by cpuz. I have it crunching now. Temps are 61/64/62/62. I am going to try to get the vcore down some more later.

Now I get no BSOD and the computer just flat out restarts, or shuts off. It is not a thermal or power issue, it seems to be something with voltage.... Man this board is picky haha

Luckily I haven't had such issues (yet) with my DFI X58, runs great atm :)
Setfsb works fine as well, nothing like oc'ing in windows without screwing up the bios :up:
Just make sure that for the DFI DK and UT X58 board you use the ICS9LPRS918JKL clock generator :)

I dont think anything is gonna go poof... its like 16C in my room, PWM never goes over 55C.

Room temp isn't going to matter when a resistor or something is overloaded. My PWM was idle (48c) when it died, twice.

how much vcore you using? Do you run vdroop on or off? I thought you said you fixed your problems by plugging in the floppy power connecters.

I think turning Vdroop on in bios (actually off) is much easier on these DFI's, since it doesn't make nearly as much PWM noise.

Got vcore down to 1.312 in Cpuz. Passes 10 runs of IntelBurn Test.Temps are lower. Going to let it crunch for awhile. Hope to get it a bit lower.

I have Vdroop on, the floppy power connector allowed me to get it to run longer without BSOD, but now I am trying to get the right settings I believe.

It has to be the chip, because on my Intel board I had almost an identical problem.

EDIT: Vcore is only 1.35v atm

so can you guys say using both floppy connectors helps in OCing?

@longbow It can help you with your OC. i've had a few boards now and the 12v was verry different with each board. Some boards went down 2 11.89/11.80v underload and new board stays @ 12.10v even under load without floppy cables attached.(i'm using a corsair hx1000).
Also i had boards that where not stable with the soundmodule attached to the board so you can try that also.

Did you use the same PSU with different boards?

I would guess that adding more floppy power connectors help with the stability, since it should distribute power across the board more evenly.

I'm wondering if the different 12V readings are just because different boards report different voltage readings. Did you use the DMM on the read-points to measure the voltages?
