hi guys,
sorry for my bad english but i'm italian.
i've read a lot of posts in this thread that talks about memory issue with RIIE and Corsair Dominator 3x2GB kit 1600MHz 8-8-8-24.
I'm going to build a core i7 based system exactly with the RIIE mobo, core i7 920 and that Dominator kit.
I know that maybe you've already talk about that but it's not very simple for me read 40+ page in english.
So i ask you guys if with a 920 @ like 3800 - 4000MHz i can set my dominator to 1600MHz with 8-8-8-24 timings and have no problem at all (like cold but and similar) or it's better to go on another brand of memory?
thanks to anyone that would help me,
cheers
.::NeO::.
yeah you'll be alright. The newer boards are'nt being affected. I have that same exact ram and my dominators run stable at around 1657mhz at 8-8-8-20-1T timings.. when I go above that, i start to see random crash's and bsod's. If you overclock to 4ghz then your ram will run at exactly 1600 mhz depending on what multiplier you use. Just stick to the stock multi on the 920
Just found that my cold boot issue was related with my Enermax Galaxy 1000 PSU.Untill yesterday I could make the board boot by switching the psu off and back on immediately.
Suddenly the board didn't want to boot no matter what.Having read in another forum about compatibility issues with psu's,I switched it with a CHIEFTEC 850 and the board booted just fine without the cold boot symptoms:bsod:
Hey guys,
This is my first post on here since I'm a [H]ardforum regular. But since I've been following this thread religiously since the past week or so, I decided to post my problem to see if anyone here can help. (Hardware in sig)
Nearly every time a boot up, the bios keeps switching my boot HD around. I have no idea why, I save my changes and everything every time but it still wont work. Second problem, although I'm not sure if this is MOBO related, is that everytime I install or patch something my PC freezes for a second to half a minute.
I 've run Prime 95 overnight and everything seems fine and dandy. I've gone back to my default settings in the bios.
Any Idea what could be causing these problems? My os is vista ultimate.
Thanks guys!!
Which drive do you have set as 'active' boot partition?Quote:

Which BIOS revision are you on?
I dont know if that's an option I have to choose. I just go to boot priority and select my Velociraptor save and quit. My bios version is the latest one found on the first page.
hmm i wonder have u guys noticed this month or next
they are releasing the rampage ii Formula
saw that in the asus vendor brochure
it has 4 dimm slots that support tri-channel
and 2 pcie for sli
no tweakit and probe it
uses the same phase as the p6t
Ran stable through linx 20 runs. 208bclk, ht off, vcore at 1.38v in bios and all others auto. 8-8-8-24-1t ram timings. Maxed around 66C during linpack, under water. Now if only I could afford a ss and some dominator gt...

guys theres a good news coming in the next week..
new bios.
all ure woes are heard..
finally a breakthrough
geee after 30 mails and more than dozen phone calls..
unlike gaygay r2e will have a option to disable instead of having it disable by default
hopefully there wont be any glitches to delay this further
but for rampage ii formula is guaranteed the release bios will have this option that u guys been seeking.
now only prob for me is the 221 bclk limit.
Anybody have any idea on my situation? I'd greatly appreciate it.
This is great news I was on the verge of selling this board, I just got a deal on a 940 =[upgrade from 920] and stuck EXACTLY where I was with the 920. The only way to describe it is its like a remote switch goes off, its not like any crash im used to mouse pointer turns into a 'I' shape and just sits there. Im more aware of this bios now than ANY board i've ever used....so frustrating.
I cant run on 22 multi over 4ghz either 21x200 no problem, its begining to get me down so I really hope this sorts it out once and for all!
btw thank you for your efforts in getting this resolved also to dejaneh.
just saw the screenies with multi 21 turbo on HT on at 100C.. with all 8 cores loaded to 100%
sorry guys theres a reason why i dont want to talk much about this and post the screenies
will mention it later the reasons
dont want to spoil it from being released.
next week dude..
the bios is already done and its working
this is a official release bios.. afaik not beta
theres a technicality issue which is what i cannot talk about.
when u see what the name of the option in the bios .. it would make sense.
Next week already and official, that's great news man! Hopefully everything works out with the technical issue.
Thx for letting us know
Is it ok for me to "hope" this new BIOS fixes the cold boot issue? No, ok....... :ROTF: (goes back to his room and closes the door)
WooHoo!!! Can't wait...:D
I had this experience and it turned out to be the sata ports.
Like usual on a build I put my primary HD in sata port 1 and secondary HD in sata port 2. Pretty much standard stuff.
Noticed that the system would switch the HDs as you mention.
Also noticed that the my primary drive (WD VelociRaptor) was very sluggish.
Tested both the primary and secondary drive and the VelociRaptor was being smoked by the secondary drive. Defiantly strange and not suppose to happen.
Corrected the problem by putting the main drive on sata port 2 and secondary on sata 4.
It is my opinion that the drive in sata port 1 was reporting so slowly that when the bios was determining boot order the only HD there was the one on sata port 2. So it got selected as the primary and then later the HD on sata port 1 finally does report it is the second drive.
This is only my opinion and I really did not test it out.
So try to put the main HD on sata port 2 and change the HD and boot priority in the bios and see if it corrects the problem.
Hope that helps.
I can pass LinX with these settings without the temps getting to high. Does everything look allright or should I lower some settings?

Thanks DR3,
I Formatted my Velociraptor today and reinstalled windows. It seems to have done the job. But these things tend to rear their heads later. Are you talking about the sata ports on the MB? Or are you talking about changing them in the bios? If on the MB how will I know which is which? My Case has HotSwap back plane do you think this could have caused the disruptions?
Thanks gain mate much appreciated!!
Hi guys . I got two problems. First one if i set the qpi vtt higher then 1.46 when using the 6th ramslot the system wont boot up after i have shutdown the comp turned of the power wait a couple of seconds. Every time i break the power i need to reconfigure settings after it works perfectly fine to run with more then 1.46 when i do it afterwards.
If i remove the mem from slot 6 the system will boot up but then i don't get triple channel. So i thought i go for the white slots then prob is the system wont boot at all. This is weird to get it running i just need to put 1 mem in any of the blue slots and it boots up with the rest ram in the white slots.
Whats the prob here? I was thinking of the cpu mem controller is broken but i dunno? Im using corsair 1600 mhz dhx 6 gb.
Does anyone else got this boot prob when you set qpi to like 1.5 and use the 6th slot after power off?
Think is it's not the cold boot issue that many seems to have since this only occur after total power off with qpi higher then 1.45.
Regards
Hey everyone, first off this thread has been a great help! My issue is this, my RIIE board is a little odd for my IOH voltage to read @ 1.111v (it's lowest setting) I have to up the forced voltage to 1.399v to read 1.111v in the bios and in Asus Probe 2. Where as my ICH set at 1.111341v will read 1.111v.
Is this a problem with the board? I believe it has done this since day one.
ok :O i have no problem runing it 24/7 but if i break power like when i move the comp i need to reconfigure the settings. It hangs on Det dram i have tried so many settings but none works . But without 6th mem slot it boots up fine maybe mine intergrated mem controller have a prob with cold boot at that volt. Sad because this aint a rma reason =/
regards
Im getting a very weird message from probe. every now and again the alarm thing goes off and says SBV has gone to 255c then goes back to 35c on its own, its intermittent but worrying just the same, anyone else had this issue? im hoping its just asus probe soft playing up.
btw this happens with 3.8ghz 19x200 1.37vcore qpi 1.35. ram 1.65 everything else on auto.

Everybody good. I am the human who an English not too understands. But some questions want to consult. Why is 230x12 can enter the system. .230x13 cannot enter the system actually. Is because of that factor?
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...i_217/2998.jpg
:D Ambitous ram timing, I like that! im always a little over ambitous.
Dont think its that tbh, could be tho I suppose, ram is dominators 1866mhz @1600mhz 8-7-8-22 that should be fine really?
I tried setting static voltages on ich/ioh I still get the error, ill try loosening the timings and see if I get it again, though I havent had the error since the last time/date in that log table.
i usually get that errors for the above
provided i found the perfect ioh/ich
so far seems ioh must be always more than ioh and ioh depending on vtt has a bigger droop somewhere around 0.04-0.06v read.
try setting ioh 1.28v/ich 1.24v
err also what proc ??
nb temp??
cpu temp??
nearing the tdp/tdc limit sometimes things go a bit haywire also.
unless ure quoting me a 965xe then sorry bro.
oh yeah it happens very often also since maximus if i remember correctly if u open pc probe and then before it loads u open cpuz for example.
Hi guys
I just gonna receive my new PC in few days with the Asus RIIE in.
I have an important question about flashing my motherboard during the first boot.
Can u valid the process i gonna use to do it please ?
1- download the last Bios on Asus website, called RampageII-ASUS-Extreme-1001
2- format my usb key
3- copy in my usb key the last bios called "RampageII-ASUS-Extreme-1001.ROM"
4- connect my usb key to my PC
5- boot for the first time
6- and let the process doing his job itself
Is this right ? or do i forget something ?
Thanks
How do i find out whe rev my board is please.
nope
from 6 is wrong
press tab
u will see the option for ez flash so press the function key for it
in the program tab to the drive ure usb is in
and then tab into the file list for the rom file.. take note it will be a shorten name
select
wait for it to check version and intergrity
say yes
and wait for it to be done
then reboot
wait
for some reason u need to wait for a bit but it will start back
havent tried on all 6 dimm but for rE it wont boot back.
I've got something similar.

Here is a picture of my Asus Probe 2 readings, I'm running Seti@home in the background so I'm about 100% loaded.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...empsnvolts.jpg
My IOH has a large voltage drop, even when everything is set at default 920 speeds. But here is what my bios reads.
Current voltage 1.111v – 1.508v – 1.111v – 1.508v
IOH voltage – 1.399v (droop of 0.288v???)
IOH PCIE voltage – 1.51106v
ICH voltage – 1.11341v
ICH PCIE voltage – 1.51106v
Any updates on that new BIOS?
Thats exactly the prob i have just that it only occurs with qpi set to like 1.5 i think it has to do with that the most psus cant power up this board up fast enough or something like that or maybe just a bios issue. Maybe they should put in a power up boot before the actual boot as the have on some boards. When you power up from power off it boot for 2s turn off and than it turn on again and boot. My maximus extreme had this for example.
Now......
I've been sitting at 3.8GHz with HT on for a few weeks, 1.42 vcore and 1.65 vdimm, all else 'auto' and everything OK.
Decided to turn HT off today, as its a 'heat' hog, and not much benefit, if any, anyway.
Upped BCLK to 211 @ 19 Multi (4005GHz) and tested with same voltages as above, and all passed LinX etc no problems. Decided to reduce vcore a little, so took it down to 1.40v, and all passed no problems...BUT!
2Gb RAM disappeared just like that, 4Gb instead of 6Gb? BIOS and OS.
Dropped vdimm to 1.64v, and presto......I have my 6Gb back?, not tested for stability as yet.
Any thoughts guys?
Proc is 940, not sure if this was happening with the 920, never really used probe since Commando days so kind of thinking it might just be probe being retarded. Considering others are seeing similar.
255c on sb is extreme in any situation, I cant really see how that should happen even for the split second it is happening.
temps are cpu 36c ish across all cores, nb 34c In my example the pc was at idle-no load. under load nb hardly moves according to probe.
I would have been no where near the tdp limit which is the issue we are aware of when pushing the board hard.
I will try your suggested ioh/ich voltages and see if it becomes more constant.
Look at chayos cpu temp at [02/07/2009 at 12:32 pm] CPU Voltage Abnormal, 65.54 V  that cannot be right, that would blow a hole thru his mobo:(
forgot today is chap goh meh etc
asus china on holiday
so have to wait more for that new bios
busta no that is error thats related with voltage
test memtest hci for a hour or so in diagnostic mode
i had the same issue with uncore 4000 and came with the same conclusion
until i failed memtest hci 3000% something
and then started messing around with ioh/ich voltage to find the right combo with the vtt.
and never appeared after that.
What is a good combo for the IOH/ICH voltage, I've tried the 1.28/1.24V combo. I'm still seeing the occasional burps in the Asus Probe reading. I've also backed my cpu down to 190x20, due to some random freezes, even after running prime the In place FFT's for the torture test. I could pass for over an hour then after a restart failed in like 2 minutes.
So I'll see if it works better @ 190x20 instead of 200x20.
There is a 4GHz QPI limit on i7. If you are able to enter Windows with >4GHz QPI you are already way better than 99.9% of people here.
Having said that, obviously the 230MHz BCLK is pushing the system too much as clearly you cannot boot as soon as you increase the multiplier.
can..215x21..

waixxx please can you share settings in bios you are using for 214 blckx21 in your first screen shot, with qpi/ioh/ich voltages also which bios are you using?
let's seem some prime95 or something that uses all the cores? I can get close to 5ghz (vapochill) and pi all day and night. But prime95 will rape my pc after 10min at 4.5ghz. i watch in horror as the temp goes from -9c to 90c :) these chips get darn hot.
Quick question guy. I'm about to the place an order at the egg for a RE2 and i wanted to get the ddr1600 dominator kit. does the re2 still having problems with this ram?
I have the r2e and corsair 1600 with no problems at all. knock on wood.............
Waixx thnx for sharing, which version bios is that 1001? nice work btw.
Does this board has problems running 12gb of corsair 1600 at 1700mhz ? and whats the maximum BCLK I expect with that ?
thanks
Yes I'd like to know that answer as well. Just ordered 12 GB of the Dominators to replace my classic ones.

what are your full load temps (ie, prime95)?
boo.. your OC makes my 965 EE seem like a stunning waste of money :P
i need 1.6vcore to get it stable @ 4.4ghz
though.. the vapochill isn't powerful enough. Because it has to battle to cancel the heat out (vs taking the heat off the chip) the ever increasing temps (over 4.4ghz) are pushed to unstable levels. In about 4 "test" cycles on prime it becomes to hot and crashes.
The temps do drop VERY fast when there is a light load.
So i'm pretty sure i can use higher every day OC than a full load OC - as when the hell am i going to be break out 4 (or 8) threads running for a few min non-stop. *shrug*
still pisses me off :) i should have picked up a 940
That 965 of yours still should give you a decent overclock with a little lower voltage than what your running. Maybe its a voltage setting somewhere that your overlooking....
Your cpu is still a beast to me because of the unlocked Multi. If you look closely here in this thread you can see some have it stable @ 4.3-4.5 . and are having great results in sli and crossfire.
Uhmm your using a Vapor Chill system >? Freaking Sweet. Do you have H.T. enabled when your pc crashes ? At 4.3 -4.4ghz mine crashes with HT on. Still tweaking though and hoping on better inprovements in bios updates . BTW what bios are you running ? That may be the culprit of your overclocking woes. ;) I'm on the version 1001 bios and it seems to be helping me with stability issues.
Anything but a 920 is unfortunately a stunning waste of money...just the XE chip is a stunning waste of money^2.
And I own a 940, so I'm not biased. Just telling it like it is...
On and on a different note, after a while now my cold boot problem is back. I'm rather pissed about it. I have no idea why it is back, nothing changed on my system at all, but it is definitely back.
Three days in a row now the system does not power on after I shut it down at night. Instead it starts all the fans, displays DET DRAM and then it hangs. To get it to boot I have to hold the power button down, wait until it shuts down, then press it again, reload my BIOS settings, and voila, I am rock solid stable again.
The system is memtest, memtest hci, Arena, Prime, and LinX (Linpack) stable...
At first I thought it had to do with 1001 BIOS, but now I noticed that even downgrading the BIOS does nothing to alleviate the problem. I have not experienced a single cold boot since I stopped using X.M.P. profiles about 1.5 months ago...that is until now.
Totally weird.
I hope you can get your boot issues worked out Dejah . Keep tweaking and you'll find your 940's sweetspot .
I've personally seen the 965 topple both the 920 and the 940 clocked at the same ghz . All on the same board (Evga x 58) . SOMETIMES ITS LUCK OF THE DRAW on each cpu. I've also seen the 940 with its 22 multi at some great clocks. 4.4 , 4.5ghz...At my local lan cafe one guy has his 940 on AIR at 4.4ghz with triple Sli and HT ENABLED. So it is possible to get some great clocks out of all 3 cpu's.. Most of the time a bad overclock is user error or bad components .
I have clocked both the 920 and the 940 on the same board. I may have had a off batch cpu but I couldnt get the 920 stable past 3.8ghz . Pulled out the 920 and popped in the 940 , kept the same voltages and BAM . CLOCKED IT TO 4.115 GHZ with ht and 4.3 without . Vantage and prime95 stable.(its the setup I'm on now).
I've built 4 Corei7 systems so far 2 with the 920 ...2 with the 940. I'm probably going to get scorned here for saying this but both 940's clocked higher and was more stable with 3-12gigs of ram than either of the 920's . Luck I guess . Thats was enough for me to see to get my own 940. Glad I did.. AND damn glad I chose the Asus over the EVGA.
HOPEFULLY a future bios will fix the unstablility with HIGH OVERCLOCKS wile using HT. I could run this all day but why treat my cpu like LAST YEARS Model?

59C Max temp after Vantage run .
Topple in what way? Architecturally, these processors are IDENTICAL to the last detail. It is impossible that a 965 runs the same clocks better than a 940 or for that matter a 920. If clocked higher, that's a different story. Also, a lot of users do not realize that not every board will let them run Turbo permanently on like Gigabyte does so during a benchmark a CPU may downclock but you will never know. On some boards you need to disable TDP limit, on others (like P6T/R2E) you are plain out of luck for now.
Besides, looks like all of us will get a double whammy soon with the arrival of the D0 stepping. Every current i7 looks like it is being phased out and replaced by supposedly better overclocking parts. The 940 and 965 seem to be going EOL and are to be replaced by 950 and 975. Personally I think this is a bunch of bull, but whatever. Especially bad for 940 and 965 owners though as we paid so much more for supposedly better parts and basically got relabeled 920s.
Anyway, this is a R2E thread so we should not be discussing i7 processors here.
I would say 100% right there.Quote:

Although, don't give up heart dejanh, this board has plenty of weird stuff going on, I have not had cold boot as issue yet, but I have had lots of silly stuff going on, which just doesn't happen usually, stick with it buddy, I feel better times coming ;):)
Were all here for each other buddy :)
I havent had any cold boot issues, but do have this frustrating wall at 4.2ghz, same outcome with both 920 and 940 chips. I've tried my own settings and also tried settings that others have posted here. with the same result.
The 940 I have behaves identically to the 920 at least on this board right down to the multis it will run on, the extras for the 940 are like tantalising teasers that are there but cant be used?
As far as 940 and 965 being phased out, that in itself speaks volumes. though having said that I dont think they are bad chips per se, just not on this board atm.
Personally, when the bios comes that is intended to fix this tdp issue arrives If it works great if not then I will have to think about getting a different board.
I totally understand where dejaneh is coming from, for a board with such a price tag these issues should be addressed much faster than they have been regardless of the 920/940/965 debate.
I have socket 478 boards here that are more consistant, less complex yes but they will still take a good hammering and still boot everytime.
I also have a Vapochill and found that it was having a tough time. Then I had a closer look at the shell I was using and found that it was hitting the cpu mounting bracket and causing the cold plate to not make good contact with the cpu.
Did some minor mods to the mounting shell and now the vapochill keeps the temps down.
Hope that helps.
Yeah, I know. Trust me after how much I paid for all of these components I am definitely not planning on changing them. I've had this board and chip probably longer than most people posting in this thread, so I do get frustrated sometimes, especially when Intel does something like what they seem to be planning on doing with the 940 and 965.
Yup, my cold boot is only after a total power off. Had one just this morning infact. Funny thing is, it literally does have to be a "cold" boot. If I power down now, and then I try to start the system again, it will boot just fine.
Indeed. We should have had resolutions to many of these annoying problems that volumes and volumes of users have been experiencing a long time ago. And in terms of the planned phase-out of chips...I think the 940 and the 965 are basically not selling at all, so Intel wants to start doing some actual binnning to make a distinct difference between the parts, which sucks big time. Though, if the 940 goes EOL then an RMA must give you a 950 :p:
Main thing is though that I want to see the new bios for this board...c'mon Asus!
why so impressed ? i can s-pi 4.5 ghz np with mine and i run 4.1 ghz qpi 24/7 :O It's the cpus that set the limits atm not the boards :O
I managed this today, nothing too impressive HT is off, but still faster than my e8600 at 5.5ghz. [xp] this test was in vista too!

Probably didnt need so much vcore, I just wanted to complete the test without too much messing about.
so u fired up my R2E for the first time today... NOTHIN it starts then shuts down the starts and stays on... anything i can do or am i going to have to RMA it?
did u plug ure rams to the correct channel
x58 is other way around
A2 is the nearest to the cpu
hence CPU,A1,A2,B2,B1,C2,C1
put it all in 1's
