Oh no, what temps due they coldbug at??? My Mach II with my Oty 148 @ 1.58 runs -22 to -17 (-51 evap) idle, and -7 to -5 under load. You were saying that the cpu seems to run hotter though right?Quote:

with my huge experience..2 optys 165 and 170..temps never seem to be an issue
My cpus hit OC wall well before the 55C limit I had..max they did on air was 51-52C with 1.55v on my 170
My PWMIC all never crashed my setup even when it was running 63/64 under dual prime 95 with my opty 170
within in reason it seems temps are not a big deal..except when you are "really" pushing the chips limit???
170 max was 2700 @1.5v...maybe 2750 @1.55v but never really finialized this as it was not worth it(load 47/49C on air)
165 seem to max 2610 no matter vcore(load 1.49 46-48C)
after doing some testing here is what I have found out with this 0550UPMW at 1.45V (in bios) on my 0546XPMW I would idle at around 26C and load around 37C....with the 0550UPMW I idle around 31C and load around 53C....I am starting to think that perhaps the IHS might not have good contact with the core.....I have an SLK948U coming from canada and when I get it I think I am going to pop the lid on my 170 and see what happens...
For those who can find it, my advise - get Opteron 175 OEM version CCBWE 0530
No sign of cold bug in a mod VapoLS (-60 evaporator / less than -30ºC on the bios)
These "golden" CCBWE 0530's in a good single phase can do 3.400Mhz benchable on booth cores

Well I've been doing a bit of thinking, and apart from borked sensors, the only explanation I can think of is that I'm using a small PWM fan which doesn't have any spread onto the CPU. I swapped out the stock BT fan for a Panaflo and it's loading at 38-39C at 2.75GHz.

Here's my result so far. Not too sharpy. It can do SPI32 but not prime. Core0 crap out around 5 minutes. This's with IHS off and water cool.

I think the IHS is bad on my 0550UPMW for sure...at 1.325V load 46C idle 35C...on 0546XPMW load 37C idle 26C...anybody else think that the IHS is not making good contact with core?
Argh I'm having to start priming again, got an IRQ_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL BSOD (related to my HDD I think) :( This time I'm trying for 2.8 :) Temps are around 39-40C loaded so far :)

If you're asking what is the IHS, do not consider removing it. It's a dangerous operation that removes the metal top off the processor exposing the bare core; temps go down a few degrees but it's not recommended for first timers.

As a noobie OCing can be very frustrating..the first time builds and OCs..you need patience and lower expectations..after 7yrs of OCing and nothing extreme like phase change..I only use air because more cost effective, although with all the fan purchases..trying to get best balance of quiet operation..I probably should buid a water cooling setup..but I fear a water leak and a pooched setupQuote:

The 165 should do 2.7-2.8 pretty easy, 170 may hit as high as 2.9 on air...but you will need to tweak your setup and ram.
Keep your expectations at 2.7-2.8 range and you should be happy, if you hope for 3Ghz this will be harder ..especially as first time builder
what mobo?, what psu(this is very important as you will have so big power draws in your setup..ie cpu/videocard)..do not cut corners on PSU and Mobo choice....

Does anyone have any suggestions for these components? My understanding is that I install CPU, one stick RAM, and PSU and try to turn it on to see the bios and do memtest? Is this correct? Then I add other stick RAM, test again. Then one component, test, one component, test etc. Is this right?

Just assemble everything on a testbed first. I don't think all those steps are necessary unless you encounter problems on the first boot. Use the DFI box with some foam and antistatic wrap that it comes with. Also, make sure you have clearance for the vid card panel.
