Maybe but by dropping the multi and still having issues it seems it's not a Pure MHz limit but rather an FSB-MHZ limit, like the chip just isn't happy running with an uber fast FSB? I seen a few E6300's running at 3.5GHz but I'm not sure if that was stable? I can't even get the PC to POST when its set to 3.5GHz? (anything much over 488MHz-FSB).

I had a look at that in BIOS but to be honest I have no idea about GTL, not sure what values auto is setting and wouldn't know what manual values to enter.

Yeah my e6300 did the same max FSB on 6x and 7x multi's, that's the FSB wall.

GTL values are 0.63x and 0.67x by default (with my 45nm CPU it's that anyway, it should say in the top right hand corner of the bios screen when you highlight the GTL ref values what default is set to. It is a percentage of the vTT (vTT is the same thing as vFSB), that is used to 'tune' the FSB window the cpu is capable of.

Say you have 1.24v vFSB set in bios, if you set 0.63x for the first GTL ref value, it means: 0.63 x 1.24v = 0.78v, and if you set 0.67 for the second one, you have: 0.67 x 1.24v = 0.83v.

If you adjust them up, so say you set 0.635x for the first one and 0.675x for the second one, you now have raised slightly the window of FSB the CPU is capable of.

Concerning the vPLL, I would start at 1.52v as intel states the vPLL should be 1.5v +/- 5% so that's 1.575v max. Personally I think starting at 1.6v is a little high, and leaving it on auto you are likely to be giving it 1.7v+.

I've got a good few years experience in overclocking but I never really got into the Quad-Core stuff and that seems to be where alot of GTL tweaking was going on so I didn't get any experience of it.

I am due a new CPU soon and this E6300 is earmarked for my HTPC as it undervolts really well, just wanted to give it another crack as I had some spare time but after two days I'm starting to feel a little frazzled lol! :D

No problem, and that article is very good, freecableguy is a machine when it comes to electrical engineering!

GTL ref's are very useful in quad overclocking, but can be of some assistance when overclocking duals too. If I were you I would have a play around and see if you can get it a little higher, but as you have plans for is in a HTPC, don't abuse it. Mine also ran very nicely at low volts, it did 3.33GHz at 1.30v load.

The new wolfdales are awesome fun, and there's nothing like the snappiness of running at 4GHz + 24/7, I'm loving it, as will you no doubt, if you decide to go that way when you upgrade. The new quads are also extremely versatile, so whatever you choose you'll have a blast.

I will always have a softspot for the e6300's though, they are awesome.

I tested my NB and Vdimm with Volt Meter and

NB is at 1.26 and Vdimm is it 2.06

Settings in Bios 1103 are

1.24 NB
2.00 Vdimm

I can't test vFSB and PLL as my heatsink/fan is in the way of test areas, but my settings in Bios are these below including Vcore.

CPU Voltage: 1.425 (Bios) --- ( 1.416v idle | 1.43 full ) (Windows)
CPU PLL Voltage: 1.54
FSB Termination Voltage: 1.28

Ok so last night the 1103 bios was not on Asus Wesbite http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us and now i just checked and it is abck there again.

What Gives??? anyone know.

I have 1003 installed as many know, but i seen it gone last night and figured UH OH what is wrong with it.

I still don't see the 1201 listed as an Official Release, but i have the one from the FTP site downloaded, but not sure if i want to run it yet as .. ya never know it maybe a BAD one...... lol and asus may pull it...... so you guys ginea pig it for me ... K

thanks for the feedback regarding my overclock just testing now but there is 1 thing that gets on my tits. when i turn my pc it take upto a min to for the graphics cards blue light to come on and system post no picture untill then HELP this is well anoying when rebooting to try overclock thanks again david

How are you guys flashing your BIOS? I don't have a floppy drive to use and I could never figure out how to make a USB flash drive bootable... all the programs I found to do that said I needed a floppy drive.

Has anyone set up RAId using ICH10R on this board yet? Skimming the manual (before I had to RMA), I saw that I had to use that CD to create a bootable disk for installing the RAID drivers... can I use the USB flash drive to do that as well or am I going to need a floppy? I would nLite slipstream the drivers in there but I want a fresh, clean install.

I use a Kingston Data Traveler 2GB USB stick, just put the BIOS itself onto it (not in a folder either), many USB sticks will do fine, but there is some that won't recognize on bootup ... which ones are they ... well trial and error is all.

Then on bootup HIT ALT + F2 when you see the screen for options at bootup.

When it loads it will show the USB stick and the Bios, then simply update Bios.

No need to create a BOOTABLE USB stick, just make sure it is formatted already to FAT format which 99% of them already are from the factory.

You can't use a floppy anyways as the Bios is 2MB and a Standard Floppy and reader is only 1.44MB.

Just a heads up guys: 1201 works great here. :up:

I know another easy way, copy the BIOS file onto a FAT formatted USB stick and plug that into your machine when it is switched off. Switch the machine on, press DEL to enter setup and the option to flash the BIOS is right there in the BIOS page (last/second last tab).

Been doing it that way since the P5B-Deluxe and no problems! :)

Well is it using the easy-flash or the Asus Fudo ... i like my way better if it is the Fudo as i not like Fudo as it can cause issues after flashing and OCing and such can be fked.

Ok i just read about it....... lol and it can be either or .. hmm i may use in bios option next time.

eSata!

I am trying to connect an external Sata drive using an eSata cable plugged into the rear of the board but I'm not having any joy?

I'm not overclocked anymore and I can't see any options in the BIOS regarding eSata and the machine has been powered off & restarted a few times. I've also looked in the Windows management for disks and there is nothing there? . . . Hmmm

Am I missing something?

Anyone else using an eSata device?

It is only me who have problems with multip.. In bios 1103 an 1201 ? E8400 an E8600
no problems with bios 0506 an 0803.
but I have a problem at all bioser,it is strap 400 :( would like to be able to use it with 500/600 fsb.

Just a guess but I think the eSata might be on the IDE-controller or whatever, so try to enable that if you've disable it!

Hey guys, I just got a new P5Q-E replacement board because my old one had the EATX12V connector shorted out (remember my pics from a few pages back?). The new one came with the earliest bios, 0610, and I was shocked to see under the hardware monitor bios screen that my Q6600 was idling at 61°C! I immediately flashed to bios 1201 but it was still 60°C on idle, even according to RealTemp in Vista 64. I haven't even overclocked, so at stock voltages and with speedstep my CPU is running at 6x266 and 1.112 V. Anyway after a bit of panicking the temps have slowly dropped, right now it's 46°C idle. But that's still higher than my old board by at least 10°C.

Could it be the re-mounting of my CPU cooler or re-application of TIM? I have an OCZ Vendetta 2 and brand new OCZ Freeze. When I removed the cooler from my old board I noticed there was far too much TIM. I had used the recommended direct heatpipe application method from benchmarkreviews.com of "filling the 4 inner channels with thermal paste" and then "two short lines measuring half the total length of the processor were placed on the two center mounting base partitions". So instead of two short lines I did two grains of rice. Anyway after 2 mins of Prime95 I hit 76°C so I am aborting! Should I remount my cooler and reapply the freeze? I just HATE doing this because I've taken out this mother ^#*U$% motherboard and remounted the cooler 10 million times! Aagggh

What paste are you using?

Also only apply to the CPU and yeah fill those lines on the sink as the pipes are not fat enough for the crevice.

Remount it yes and apply properly the TIM.
