I think it uses the JMF616. These drives are targted for non-PC applications.
i would like to see that device tested. that would make a awesome low cost array for onboards :)
I think it's the best $/MBPS deal. I don't care that it's only 16g. Potentially we are talking about 1840MB/s for only $440 ;) Throw on 9240-8i and wow...Quote:

Hey CT, 9240 will arrive probably late this/early next week. I won't have enough drives to see its limits, SF1222 drives were returned. With single S100 on its way and 2 X18-Ms I could potentially push 660MB/s. Anyway will be interesting how it stacks up vs 9260 w/o FP and SB850.Quote:

Side by side V100 is a better drive if taking capacity into consideration. For benchmarking, the one might argue that 2 of S100 are better than 1 V100. Theoretical 460MB/s sequential read vs 250. Now, consider the case when you want to build 8R0 array on a proper RAID controller and you will care about how much $ you will pay for throughput not necessarily $/Gb.Quote:

Great, thanks. The drive has very weak 4K numbers. The only use I could think of is to put Temp folder, browser cache and may be use it for ready boost :) Vertex 1 is a better drive.Quote:

The reason 4K is a great OS drive performance indicator is that over 60% of file IO happen for files less than 64K in size. Big portion of those are around 4K in size. Thus rundom performance with that file size is very important. Right now Intel X-25M, RealSSD C300 and SF-1200 drivers offer the best 4K MB/s and IO/s. Sequential numbers are good for people who do image editing and audio/video recording/transcoding. Other than that they are not very important in a desktop environment.Quote:

Thanks for the link, I had Vertex 1 in the past and compared S100 scores to my CDM and I saw that Vertex 1 is a better drive.
If you're willing to pay about $110-120 for SSD, RealSSD C300 64Gb is the best performer right now along with 40-50Gb SF-1200 based drives (F40, Vertex2, S599)
Last I heard, there was next gen mainstream SSDs coming supposed to do ~500MB/s, obviously late/not here yet. Six months to two years away for all I know.

How important 4k random read and write performance is in linux? 16GB would be more than sufficient for linux media PC and to think of it, even thought 4k read/write is only ~10MB/s, it's still around 10x the speed of conventional HDD.
stuffme, great question, this seems like the perfect fit for an xbmc-appliance type box. (with some nas in a different room)
I have this drive now for testing and I will post the results soon. Could someone instructs me how to test the drive properly with iometer, so I don't post useless results?
This I can say already, the drive is very slow on writes, but reads it's quite fast for its price.
I have this drive....... STUTTERS like CRAZY. It was a XP64 boot drive, but couldn't stand the lag it had, so now Im using it as a game drive only for FarCry2.... Sucks for that too....
