Heatkiller Backplate installation SNAFU

So I got my new heatkiller 3.0 yesterday to replace my fuzion v2.:party:

I ordered the backplate with it as well.

When I looked through the instructions, there was no mention of the orientation of the backplate when installing it. The backplate comes with an x-shaped rubber pad to isolate the metal of the backplate from the mobo.

Fitting the rubber x to the backplate seemed easy enough. The back plate has four screw holes where it mounts to the standoffs for the heatsink. These screws have a flat side and a slightly raised side. The rubber x fits perfectly on the raised part and is held in place very well.

So I put it together this way and started the computer up. It immediately began making a strange clicking sound from the cpu area. I got no signal to the monitor and it definitley didn't want to post.

Upon further research and my suspiscion of the backplate, I found that I had installed the backplate backwards. I'm pretty sure it made some contact with the backside of the motherboard dispite the rubber x being installed between the board and the backplate.:hitself:

So, after I flipped the backplate and reset cmos, it finally did post and start up.

BUT, I can no longer maintain any of my old overclocks. I'm severely limited to near stock speeds. the board runs, just no longer optimally.

SO, please let my haste be a warning to you all who plan on installing this waterbock. As I look at it now, it is somewhat self intuitive to mount it the right way. It was just those little raised areas that held the rubber x on there that got me.

Feel free to tell me how you "knew right away how to install it". Feel free to belittle me for my stupidity. I need the encouragement to be a little more careful next time...:slapass:

Hmmmmmm, possibly concerned ...

When I installed mine I put the "plastic coated" side of the backplate to the board, with the bare metal side facing the MB tray. I used the 4 red split washers between the board and the backplate as per the instructions. I too was conerened as to which way round to put the backplate on, as it was not described anywhere, but I have had no problems so far.

I didn't get an X-shaped rubber pad with mine - can you post pics?

Just realised, the 775 socket uses an x-shaped pad while the i7 socket uses the red split washers. No need for pics!

I too installed this backwards while leak testing yesterday but fixed it before powering on the classified.

The plastic on my HK backplate came pretty much destroy. I took it off, but when i mounted the backplate on i checked, double check and triple check to make sure it wasn't touching anything it not suppose too.

Ahh, I was wondering that from another thread. Instructions would have been nice with it. I just figured that it would be a bit silly to etch their name into the backplate and then have that completely hidden when mounted. :shrug:

I was thinking the same thing as I put it on.

actually, it reminded me of a sad story...

A buddy of mine, a few years ago, had a badass bmw m coupe. Black sparkle paint, 19" rims, chip, intake, exhaust, lots of other stuff (imported) too. Well anyway, he was a goober and liked to drink and drive. He ran that beautiful m coupe right into a tree in somebody's front yard. Nobody was hurt, not even the fool driving. But the part I was alluding to above... the airbags in the bmw m coupe, have the m logo stitched on them and are intricately stitched with red and blue over black fabric. I thought it was pretty interesting that they would go to such lengths to put their logo in a place like that, where, you hope to never see.:shrug:

Sad for the loss of the car, not otherwise. Some people can't have nice things. I can though. I ordered a new motherboard. I'll see what gigabyte wants to charge to fix this one too. hopefully just a replacement of a few components.

And before I get flamed:nono:, I am planning on telling them what I did. I don't care to help raise the cost of products through deceiving manufacturers.

Honest mistake. I think most people had to look twice at that backplate when installing it. ;)

Poor BMW :shakes: If it was imported, I hope he had the German computer reinstalled. The German computer is so much nicer than the one they put in the American versions. For one, no speed governor. :D

Same here to.
They probobly should send a instruction paper in english to, the german is like chinese for me.
Is there no logo on the AM3 version?

I'm sorry to hear that you damaged your mobo! It would be terrible if your golden CPU was damaged as well. Oh well, incentive to upgrade, eh?

The backplate is optional right? why not just not use it.

Backplates are preferred because they prevent warping your board. They're especially useful on blocks which a bowed center as they generally benefit from higher mounting pressures.

It helps to distribute the pressures across a greater area. Without the backplate you are focusing all the pressure to 4 small points instead one large area.

I checked in my other board. The cpu is totally fine. :woot:

Not sure which ecu it had. I do know it had a dinan chip though. More like a dinan flash IIRC.

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get installation instructions for the HK3, as I got mine yesterday, only to open the box to find some instructions in a foreign language!

This is the first time I have ever used water cooling, so I don't want to go ahead and try installing the block when I dont know what I am doing!!

I will be using it on the rig in my sig

Opps, just checked mine mount...... I have the 1366 mount, and i guess I have it backwards.

I has the logo visible........:( And I didn't even use the provided red washers, I instead used the foam pad that comes with D-tek mounting kit. I don't think anything is touching.

This is on the bloodrage, and the black plate if making direct contact with the metal plate on the back of the MB.

But since I running ok, I am not going to bother flipping it, its on indigo extreme, and its a :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: to mount and remount/reflow.

But good to know, and sorry to hear, at least other can benefit.

You have it mounted correctly. The logo faces outside away from the motherboard. For plates without the logo, you mount it with the bulging side toward the motherboard.

Thanks mate, but one thing, I don't own a caliper... :(

I personally think that it is too loose at 19.6. I crank down until they bottom out and then back off two full turns. I think the reason for the 19.6mm instruction is the avoid warping the board. If you have a back plate you really don't have to worry about warping. I have always found that tight is good for better temps.

curious if there is any real benefits to pressure mounting it. I agree 19.6 seems far from what I'm used to. I don't plan on using the backplate as I have a stupid rampage extreme with the fujitzu part in the way.

Ehh... so which way is the right way, thres atleast two instructions so far.
Bulging side towards the motherboard & text side to the motherboard.
In my case the bulging side is not the side with the HK text on it, lol.

So I have one side which ahs the HK text and a plastic sticker over it.
And the ohter side that has no markings on it and is bulging.

The bulging side faces the motherboard regardless of the logo.
