Spd Update Failed ... Protected EEPROM or what ???

I was trying to update the SPD of my Black Cellshock DDR3 sticks. I have one pair of 1800 and one 1600 ... Both with D9GTR .
My problem started when i tried to boot them on my rampage 2 extreme board. They refuse to post . Lcd poster show something like "locked" ...

I tried to make a more compatible SPD to the RAM with spdtool & thaiphoon burner . Tried in X48 & X58 boards with no success.
What happening is that these programs only update half the SPD (Lower half in screen as you see it in Spdtool or thaiphoon) .
The part that is updateable has the info on XMP (Tried to make some XMP profiles but still RAM doesn't play in rampage2extreme) .
I have to edit the timings but i just can't write them (spdtool gives verify errors) . The memories seems to be protected from writing .

why change spd? just do it manually?

Manually ??? What do you mean ? The motherboard isn't even able to post with these memories installed.

Stelios, is it possible to locate a EEPROM chip on the module and to take a photograph of it?

I think Nanometer mean instead of flashing new SPD (and edit timings) you could set those timings manually via BIOS.

Stelios, do you have backup of your original SPD? Can you POST and enter Windows with one stick of this 'dead' memory and another 'good' mem? If so, perhaps you could flash the dead memory to it's original SPD.

Also did you use option 'Fix Checksum' (or something, can't remember the exact words :p:) before saving new SPD?

I can tell you the reason why I am looking into this. It is because I have 6pcs of D9GTR but they have different SPD. Two of each.

Now when I want to run tri-channel I am having issues when using two different SPDs (2+1). It does not seems to help setting timings manually in BIOS.

Well, there are more subtimings than your mobo bios offers. However, I had no problems on P6t deluxe. It uses SPD of the 1st module to set subtimings but since all my modules are D9GTR/S they handle it easily :)

I don't have a camera available right now ... but i removed the heatspreader and i can read the EEPROM . It's from SST electronics . First line : "3E02" , second line : "FR"

Yes , I have a backup SPD (In fact i have more than 10 backups :D )

A friend gave me a kit of CSX (diablo GTR 3x1gb) and i tried to flash them with spdtool & thaiphoon (Just to check if i can write them) . And the flash was completed with both programs!:eek:

Then , i removed the 3rd CSX stick and replaced with one cellshock stick. Board posted and all sticks are recognized correctly (2 CSX + 1 cellshock) . Tried to flash the cellshock stick ... and it was a no go again . In thaiphoon write is completed (like previous times) , but in fact nothing is written . ( Reading from this stick shows the original cellshock spd ) . In spdtool i get verify errors ...

As for checksum ... In spdtool i didn't try to fix it (because spdtool doesn't recognize DDR3 spd's properly) . In thaiphoon the spd is valid , so no need to fix it .

Thanks for the replay. That's all I need.

p.s. unfortunately, there is no any statistics on write-protected RAM modules. And it would be great if we could collect some info on this subject.

I opened the 2nd kit and it has the same EEPROM ...

There is also one pair of Adata 1600X around my desk that can't be flashed either , but it's risky to pull the heatspreaders to check the EEPROM...
So far only the CSX can be flashed out of 4 memory kits i have here. Should i go and play the lottery ???:rofl:
So ... I don't have memories to play with my i965 ... :shakes:

HIWA got exact same problem with a CS kit ...

look here my friend try that SPD i poster 1066 one maybe you can flash them with this SPD
i had 6 moduls i 2 of them had a good SPD worked perfect on REXII but 4 of them had SPD 1800 8-7-6-21 1.75 and with these moduls i had your same problem tried flash them on 4 mobos,no way to go like yours
IF you want use them u have to change mobo and buy Gigabyte (workss on ud5 and extreme)tested by me

don't buy DFI too if you want use your Cellshocks :(

i had the exact same prob with csx 2x1gb 2000mhz with old spd=no xmp, and wanted to flash spd from my kingston 14400 gtr that is working perfect on all mobos.
one stick flashed fine the other would not,tried 10 different spd´s and no go.
i asked kasparz from csx and he could not help me.

Yeah, i did try that and also moving around the sticks but no luck. HOWEVER, with new BIOS on Gigabyte X58 eXtreme it seems to work pretty well now. :) But now I realise my old D9GTR has hard times running against theese new low voltage RAMs that do +1000MHz easily... :(

What to do next? :D

impossible to flash the SPD with SPDTool or other

I think when you want to boot with the SPD by default, this boot C7 to 1.5V and... it would not... :D

it's hard when I do the bios update, forced to submit another stick of DDR3 to boot and set the bios

nobody has a solution for this?

During the past days i tried some things , like wiring the WP pin to Ground (VSS) and unsoldering the WP leg from the PCB with no effect . SPD was still protected .

So .. now i'm gonna try one more thing . I found 2 pin compatible EEPROM chips from some DDR2 memories (and electricaly compatible according to the PDF) ... and i succesfully flashed them with the refererence D9GTR SPD .
Now , all i have to do is desolder the EEPROM's from the DDR2 pcb & solder them to the DDR3 pcb (Of course after desoldering the existing ones from my cellshock DDR3) .

In the next days i'm gonna have the news ... and i believe it's gonna work . :D

The EEPROM i'm gonna use are "AT34 - U1 c" . It's from Atmel .
