MSI X58 Platinum thread

Haven't seen a thread for this board in this area, but I know a few people does have it. I think would be good to share some info about it.

I used to have a Q6600 and an Asus board (P5K Deluxe and later P5Q Deluxe - both awsome boards) and I'm stuck in some BIOS options in this MSI but I'm specially heat limited here because I'm using stock Intel cooling so far..

So far I'm at 190x20, I kick myself in the rear for not buying 1600 memory, I bought 1333 LL memory. Now that I know what is definitely 24hr prime small fft stable I can work on lowering the voltages some. I've had it at 200x20 but it gets like 3xx errors in memtest86 test 5 even with relaxed timings, I'm debating whether its worth it to pick up some of the fancy gskill 1600 pi memory and try to lock it in at 4ghz for 24/7 operation or settle for 3.8ghz, grrrr.

Great OC! I'm also using DDR3 1333 but my worry right now is that I'm using the stock cooling and the temps at load are just killing me.

Yeah my temps on the stock hsf where out of control really, with HT enabled at 3.4ghz it ran upwards of like 95c, DOH!! No doubt some good air cooling alone would work wonders.

Anyways I've dropped the vcore .2 since the prime run I posted and the temps are looking to be around 6-8C lower but I'm also running blend this time around.

I'm surprised there's not more information on this board out there than what there is, really a solid board for the money.

Maybe some other owners will chime in with their results.

EDIT: Have you figured out how to use the turbo boost function for the board, the manual says there is a sub menu in the bios once you enable turbo boost in the bios but I can't seem to find any way to do anything with it. Also not sure if you found it yet but a great feature is the bios reset button on the back panel. At first I was removing the battery to reset things, guess I should have read the manual a little first rather than jumping right into things.

Wow 217 is nice, maybe I'll try dropping the multiplier and see what mine will do on the bclock. I've had some issues trying to get mine to even boot on the low memory ratio setting and my memory won't go much more from where its at now, maybe I need to try changing the voltages a little more.

What kind of voltages did it take to get the bclock to 217, qpi only or did you have to change the NB & ICH voltages?

To enable Turbo mode you must set Intel EIST to auto but pay attention to the voltages and temps because it will increase ;)


My maximum Bclk with everithing on auto is 207. Here is a validation at 205: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=470801

I'll try to find my max bclk with QPI volts around +0.170 tto (thanks).

Disable Intel EIST

I'll try to get the exact settings later, got her priming right now but off the top of my head some of the settings are:

qpi +.100
vdimm 1.64
vcore +.210 or .220 (is currently 1.392 while priming)

EIST disabled
Turboboost disabled


I'll get the real numbers after it finishes priming.

Even when I enabled turboboost I never see anything change but the thing I want is access to the turboboost settings sub menu in the bios. I see in the manual they show the sub page but for the life of me I can't figure out how to access the sub menu with the turboboost options.

I am @3900 with some simple settings I found on here or somewhere else online.

set mem to auto
fix PCIE@ 37.3
disable spread spectrum
enable EIST
disable c-state
enable turbo boost
set base clock to 195
set qpi to fullspeed
leave it at 4.8gt
vcore to .25~.30

That's it. Follow those instructions (in the link)and you will achieve the 3.9 ~ 4.1 ghz overclock.

I dropped the vcore .1 from my original ss and the temps dropped a decent amount as well, may be due to the thermal compound settling in as well.

Anyways here are my current settings, a ms paint masterpiece :D

EDIT: PS don't mind the dates on the prime run, I didn't set the time and date after a bios reset :)

I'm stuck with the original one for a while since I don't have any other option here in Brazil for now. I'd like to know the results of others with the same cooling.

I feel crazy for buying more memory but I couldn't take it, order some ddr3 1600, going to shoot for a 4ghz 24/7 rig.

The memory I have now works great, 8-8-8-19 at 762x2 (1524) but they simply hit a wall just a little before 1600 regardless of everything I've tried.

Anyways if I didn't get the memory now it would just bug me so I had to do it damnit.

I know, I bought my old one in there but now I don't have an International Card anymore :p:

Actually there's a local vendor selling this cooler but it's too expensive here, about 2x the price on sidewinder after dollar convertion, and I just expend the last bucks I had with a big HD Display. So.. I'll be stuck with this cooler for a while anyway.

Just tinkering around with recoding a video to compare my q9550 to my i7 920 using automkv, same video, same settings, one winner! :)

EDIT: Not sure if it made a difference in times or not but my q9550 did the encode on a faster raid array while the i7 was a single 7200rpm drive, may have slowed the i7 down a wee bit but maybe not by much.

My Gskill 1600 should be here tomorrow so hopefully I'll be able to push her up to 4ghz for 24/7, very happy with the simplicity and stability of this board so far. The nb feels a little warmer than I would like but not so hot you can't hold your finger to it but it gets pretty toasty. May look into either adding a little more direct airflow around the nb area or possibly changing the chipset cooling altogether.

I'm having some issues now. Used to have 1 pair of 1333 value ram (rated 8-9-9-24 1.50v). Used to run them at 1360 8-8-8-24 @ 1.46v set on bios or at 1400 8-8-8-24 @ 1.48v. Both rock solid 5h+ prime stable.

Now I just got another pair of the same memory and system keeps crashing on Wondows, specially after some time under prime or 3D apps. Something related to the new integraded memory controller?
