Expreview claims to have pictures of a version of the Radeon HD 3850 which uses GDDR4 memory instead of the GDDR3 found on current models. Dubbed the HD 3850 512MB Infinity, this card is built by Unika and uses Hynix 0.8ns memory – and you may notice it also has a non-reference PCB and quite an unusual cooler, which has been designed by Triplex. Apparently this card is clocked at 700MHz core and 2200MHz RAM, and according the Expreview the price will remain at around $200.

Very good, also the size of the pcb got a lot smaller...

The cooler reminds me of a sawed off CNPS7000Alcu. These cards run cool, so im sure its more than sufficient. I kinda doubt we'll be seeing this in US Markets anytime soon though

its like the 3850 is just slowly creeping up on the 3870.. first, 512 ram, now ggdr4. 3870's only claim to fame over this card is 75mhz more core...

non reference pcb and cooler and gddr4 instead of gddr3 yet the price doesnt go up a lot, could that be a hint in the direction of a pricecut for the "regular" 3850?

Lets look at the current prices,

HD 3850 512mb GDDR3 - $ 199-209
HD 3870 512mb GDDR4 - $220-270 - though these prices should settle in time
So, what's the point of this new card? To achieve some new price point $5-10 in between the others?? The only difference between this and the 3870 now, is clockspeeds, so I'd expect it to cost around the same as the HD 3870, right? Just seems silly. Even if we see price drops on all the cards, the prices are still going to be very close.

that looks about the same sort of size as the old 9700/9800pro cards. damn i loved those cards, i remember people thought they were big back in the day, people would have had a heart attack if they saw what the cards coming out now were like.

back to the retro i say, smaller PCBs are so much tidier and nicer to work with when tinkering inside cases :)

Been to your local Best Buy(.com) lately? Yeah...That's right, I said BB. They are 159.99 and 214.99 respectively. Even at most e-tailers the price is $180 and (inflated) $240+. Granted, I imagine they are certainly headed towards the $149 and $199 come post-Christmas. Any way you slice it, there's a $40+ difference.

There is room for a 512MB 3850. The 3850's stock PCB seems to be slightly lower-quality than the 3870, and certainly ATi charges less for the lower-clocked chips. It's very possible these 'may' surface and not see the outrageous inflated price of the 8800gt/3870...or even if they don't appear until things settle, they could still be a good $25 cheaper than the 3870.

I don't know 'bout ya'll, but after seeing the v-mod on the 3850 (from stilt iirc?) and it performing similar to the 3870, and with Otto saying soft v-mod is right around the corner for HD3800 products on ATiTool, I am super-psyched. I'll take a penny any way I can get it, and if it's through a 3870 disguised as a 3850 for less bucks...so be it.

<$400 512MB 3850's in crossfire v-modded to hell sounds super tasty.

The 512mb GDDR3 version of the 3850 is not the same price as the 256mb card. They're already on sale at the prices I posted. It sits right in the middle, about $20 more than the 3850 and less than the 3870. Bestbuy might have it for that price, but it's sold out and has been sold out for a while. Hopefully we'll see some sort of price settling on the 3870 after or closer to the holiday.

I am pretty happy with my 3850 ddr3, would I even notice the perf boost from ddr4?

My mistake, I did not notice you posted the 3850 512, I was speaking of the 256MB as I thought you were. Apologies. I have seen nary a 3850 512 in stock...but GDDR4 for the same price as gddr3 is never bad, assuming a NA AIB decides to go that route. Sure, the added bandwidth - latency might not add a whole ton of performance, but it'll still be essentially a 3870 for a couple bucks less if one decides to mess with voltages.

G92GT reference has 2 but reference HD3850 has 4. This non-reference RV670 better have beefier than reerence fets & chokes...
