Advice for a 6300

Ive been looking around the forums here for a couple of days, and I would like some advice for overclocking a e6300 on a P5B-Deluxe. So far I have been able to get up to 2.94ghz stable (420*7) (Pic), but I cant seem to get any higher without it freezing during boot or testing. I apologize if this thread is redundant, but I haven't found much info on a setup like mine.

My setup is:
Core 2 Duo 6300
P5B-Deluxe
G.Skill 2x1GB (DDR2 800, 5-5-5-15 timing)
Sapphire Radeon X1600 pro
1x SATA and 1x IDE Hard Drives
Sata DVD burner

My PSU is a 400watt
+3.3 28a; +5 40a; +12 20a; +12 20a

I want to reach 3ghz or above. So far I can reach 3.03, but it freezes during post or soon after. Anyone have some advice?

Unfortunately, sticking with a 6300 is a bad idea for CPU OCs. You need a higher multiplier range to really do some damage.

the 6300 isn't a *terrible* overclocker necessarily ... with a good chip, 3.0ghz should be a breeze.

list the details of your CPU voltages and that might make suggestions a bit easier ...

thought you might like to see that the 6300 can overclock quite well if you get a good chip.

also, send the details of your CPU voltages and what not and we can help you get it a bit higher ...

Well, here is a screen of my BIOS settings, but Ill type it anyway...

PCI-express is at 100mhz
PCI Synch is at 33.3mhz
Memory is at 1.95v
CPU Vcore is set for 1.45, but only 1.4v gets to the processor (forget what the term for that was)
FSB Term volt is at 1.4
NB is at 1.45v
SB is at 1.6v
ICH is at 1.215v

Also, the CPU runs at 54c load, 34c idle, MB is around 33c

looks like your temps are just fine for a couple/few more bumps to your volts. have you tried that? what happens if you try 1.47v's or 1.5v's ... and if your temps are okay, even a bit more than 1.5v's to get stable at your desired clock.

i think if you keep it below 60 at load, your going to be in spec for your chip and shouldn't feel bad about a few extra volts.

also, in conjunction with higher volts ... try setting FSB Term, NB and SB to [AUTO]; leave your ICH as is ...

personally, i've got to run right at 1.5v's to be 24 hour orthos stable with my 6400 at 3.6ghz ... my load temps are around 56 or so. and to be honest, for day to day work (not orthos stable), i'll run it around 1.46v's in bios. orthos will only run for 6 hours or so ... but for my regular 24/7 work ... i never notice the difference.

Hate to say this, but i have a feeling that you didn't really get a good chip there. On average(don't have stat's for this tho, but if you look around the web, you might agree with me), e6300 should reach 3ghz on stock voltage. Some can even run 3.2ghz at stock!

For me, i need around 1.25v to run at 3.0ghz. But i'm using a different mobo. the ds3.

Have you updated your mobo bios? Sometimes mobo bios plays a big role in your oc. Go easy on the vcore though, stay within 10% of 1.325v just to be safe. Can't seem to find the thread, but someone here mentioned something about c2d depreciating performance on high voltages for long periods of time.

DDR2-840 at 1.95 volts, that could be the problem. Set mem multiplier lower and/or up vdimm and maybe even set somer looser timings , then try to tighten timings when you have reached a better OC.

Agreed, bump up the mem voltage to 2.25, pci-e to 110mhz. my 6300 on the same mobo is @ 3.5, I did hit a wall around 420 fsb, but then just upped it to 450 fsb & is was solid from there on up.

Good luck & check out the guide from FreeCableGuy in the intel section & try to mirror most of the setting he reccomends, they work.

Definetly bump the ram v to 2.1... get core temp to see the CPU temp. MB monitors are off by as much as 6*c in my experience.

Hmm, I can get it to post at 3.03ghz, but it will freeze up in about 10sec. I cant seem to get past 420 FSB.
Settings are:
CPU freq - 430mhz
RAM is at DDR2-860 (1:1)
PCI-e is at 110mhz
PCI Synch is 33.33mhz
Memory Voltage at 2.15v
CPU at 1.5v before Vdroop
FSB term at auto
NB at 1.45v
SB at 1.6v
ICH at 2.15v

Also, what ram timings should I try loosening?

What kind of CPU cooling? 1.5V CPU? What is the temp at this v? Does it post at lower v?


Try 5-6-6-15-42 all else auto...

I have stock cooling, and other Vcore still makes it unstable. The Vdroop is about 0.4v. At 425mhz, even with the 5-6-6-15 timings and a Vcore of 1.38v, it froze while running orthos after about 2min. While it was working, coretemp only reported about 47c in both cores.

Could some of this instability be from the use of the onboard devices like the audio?

Hmmm...47* at idle is avg at load would be excellent. .4 Vdroop! OUCH! Mine(P5B-D bios 910) is .016 at 450

Looked up your memory 5-5-5-15 at 1.9-2.0v doesn`t leave alot of head room... try a higher Vram. Make sure a fan is blowing on the ram to cool it. Sometimes ram just doesn`t OC it happens as with CPUs. You can lower the timings even more say 6-6-6-18.

What bios are you running? Sometime that can make the difference.

I have the newest bios (1004), and I dont think its my ram. I was able to make it post at 540mhz with 2.25v, and it the same ram voltage my computer wont post past 430mhz CPU and ram. I think that I may have found the highest that it will run while stable at 2.94. :(
