4 Ghz!!!..........

This has got to be one of the weirdest cpu's I've ever run into. It's capable of relatively high speeds @ low vcores, but for some reason I can't seem to get it stabilized past 14x265 1m. I haven't yet tried everything, but a cpu of this caliber should be EASILY benchable @ 3.8G. I'll try to get some work done on this chip tomorrow, but IMO it's still quite an accomplishment for a non-FX cpu to hit the magical 4. Here's a couple of more pics:

Thx guys....just thought I'd add that the cpu really didn't need that much Vcore to get to 4g. I got frustrated with not being able to run any 32m's stable so I just rebooted and set the vcore to 1.50 + 123% to see if that would help :rolleyes:. Spi ended up failing -again- so I just ramped the cpu up. It basically breezed to 4 gig, but my attempt at getting a screenie @ 4.050 locked the system up :p: This is what the cpu did on it's initial bootup. It could have gone higher, but my voltages weren't really set up correctly to go any higher (especially my BH5's which were running 1:1 @ 3.65V):

@ boblemagnifique - The IHS on the cpu may not have been making very good contact with the core since my windows temps were a little erratic. Idle Core Temps: 1.61V ~-45C, 1.66V ~ -44C, 1.71V ~ -43C. The odd thing was that these temps would fluctuate ~3C at a time. I tried to remount 2 times and was making perfect contact with the IHS so I dunno what it could be :confused:

Was it done under your cascade?

AUTOCASCADE ;) Single-compressor, 6-stage phase change. Evap @ -75C idle, -68C loaded - 1.66Vcore.

Not even stable over 2.55 ghz 1.45v, but would boot @ 2.8 ghz and screen at 3 ghz 1.55v, he liked cold and volts :)

Almost ALL A64 90nm cpu's have a bug, but some are just a little more resiliant to the cold than others. The stepping on this cpu is AABCE - which means it's a pre-release/sample version of the more common CABCE. All the FX57's produced from 0512 - 0522 were CABCE's. Generally, you'll find that sample cpu's (the ones who's steppings begin with "A") will perform a bit better in the cold than the ones released in retail. My autocascade produces temps which are slightly better than DI, but nowhere near the temps of a dual-compressor cascade. This makes for ideal temps on the majority of "non-cold bugged" 57's....

You mean you think I should try to get the system warmer? It's actually a difficult thing to do with the autocascade. If I use something which loads my cpu up, my temps climb to ~-32C loaded and that's not exactly an ideal temp ;) On the other hand, if I boot @ 1.71V, my idle temps don't climb any higher than -43C core/ -73C evap. So basically I'm stuck at these temps :p:

i've had similar experiences steve.. a 144 that could get a screen at 3.3ghz on water, but couldn't do much over 2.9ghz benchable :confused:

i know it's a long shot, but have you tried messing with ldt and chipset voltages? :p:

I understand what you're saying, but this is the way I look at it - How many 4ghz AMD cpu's have we seen? 10? Maybe 15? Now I bet that EVERY SINGLE one of those cpu's were able to run a 1m @ 3750 minimum (but more likely @ 3800). This cpu is an absolute beast when you look at it's vcore/mhz ratio and definately didn't even struggle to get to 4g. I know there's more in it, just gotta figure out what's throwing the runs off......

And although I may be absent minded at times and can't figure out which way to plug in a floppy cable, by no means am I a noob -----OF COURSE I TRIED MESSING WITH LDT AND CHIPSET VOLTAGE......:D

FCG: I found kicking cpu's doesnt really help with clocks, had a CBBID 0509DPEW 3000+ Winny that wouldnt run anything about 2.5ghz stable for the life of it (Before and after I kicked it ;) )

I was just advising this because even if I’m quite a beginner in phase change cooling, I noticed with my Opteron and Venice that there is a temperature where they work the best. They might just not improve after this point or they can also get worse, who knows.
I remember that cpull had to shut down his cascade to get to the sweet point that was -21C on his WR Venice 3000+

So you actually think that it can accept lower tmp than -45C :slobber: well if the chip is similar to FX57 it makes sense :)

Hey guys sorry to dissapoint, but there's no way in hell that this cpu's going to finish a 32m or 8m for that matter @ these speeds. I've tried for a couple hours this morning to figure out what's holding the chip back and it seems as if I have under-estimated just how much heat it's putting out. I'm pretty sure that the IHS is making horrible contact with the actual cpu core since my evap temps don't seem to fluctuate much at all with added voltages. At the same time, if I monitor the core temps while loading up the cpu, they jump about 25C @ 1.66V the instant I go from idle to load. In comparison, my FX57 @ 1.70V will only jump ~10C MAX. I'm afraid the only way that I'll get some outrageous runs on this cpu is to take the IHS off and that's something I really prefer not to do (especially since I may sell this cpu later). I'll have to think about what I want to do about this dilemma....on one hand, I don't like to run bare cores, but on the other this cpu's incredible potential has me curious....Here's a glimpse @ what this cpu is capable of (I know the times suck, but just look at the voltages ;) ):

Stop tempting me :p: I'd say the cpu would become almost immediately 32m stable @ 3700 if the top comes off. It's not exactly a retail cpu, so I guess I wouldn't be voiding any warranties....

Take the spreader off, remove the goo, apply a fresh layer of AS5 or AS ceramique, then remount the spreader with black siliconeglue.

Let it cure overnight with a clamp on it and hey presto.... 3,7+GHz is right at your feet. :D

FCG and I were just talking about this last week - when you're running in the extreme cold, there's a chance that moisture can get UNDERNEATH the IHS and deposit itself inside:

Look at the spots of water - there's even some on the core. It would have turned into ICE and acted as an insulator while under the autocascade. I'll try to get a few runs in today, but I'm definately excited about the prospects for this cpu.

BTW, ever tried to find the top end on your cpu?

Just leave it naked, the cores of these chips are surprisingly durable. I've clamped a Storm block on several naked chips with full pressure and never had a single chip even taken out of them. And man, the temp drops on water even are always around 8-10 between IHS and no IHS.

damn stephen you better get some stickie notes for those chips cuz if you dont label them you will get them mixed up... they all look the same without the ihs..:)

... and that's why I think you should revise your evap head insulation as well as around the socket and back of the mobo, Steven. You have condensation inside and better take care of it ;) I've seen your insulation but maybe there's something more you should do...

Actually, now that you're IHSless it's easier :) Just seal the socket inside and around it, cover CPU package (all but core) in LET and voila. That's how I have it done with my 146... Your auto-cascade is of course colder but same principle applies, I guess... I have my mobo so insulated that I don't think I will ever sell it... :D There's LET, seal string, neoprene and armaflex on evap head as thick as it can be without obstructing DIMM slots... Works perfect! Not a single sign of condensation, even after running 3GHz @ 1.35v and -27C BIOS / -48C evap LOAD for hours...

Trust me, there's no prob with the insulation on THIS board (maybe my Expert, but not this one) :p: The water came from the time when I pulled the evap head while still cold ;) The socket is sealed tight - guaranteed....
I've run without an IHS before, but I wouldn't say it's necessarily "easier" :p: I'm just wondering what I should use to insulate the caps since I had a little "accident" with an 0512 FX57 and my evap contacting a cap last week :rolleyes: (and yes, I WAS using mounting pads on the core). Is liquid electrical tape OK to use?

Liquid tape is good - grease is fine too.
