New Koolance *Dual DDC* Bay Reservoir! (RP-402X2)

For you DDC users, we've now announced a version similar to our latest dual D-5 reservoir (the thread for that model is here).

The RP-402X2 is similar to our earlier RP-450X2 for D-5's, and I'll bullet-point the key differences after that:

Easily combine Koolance's compact high pressure pumps into dual or serial/redundant loops! RP-402X2 is a dual 5.25" bay reservoir designed for one or two Koolance PMP-400 pumps (not included). Using a convenient side plug, the front reservoirs can be separated or combined without disassembling the unit. Both front and top fill ports are available for each reservoir.

Key differences vs. last model:

• Obviously, this one's for DDC pumps instead of the D-5.
• The two reservoirs in front can be left completely separated or combined into one tank. This allows either dual/parallel or serial REDUNDANT loops.
• We've added a side plug that allows the reservoirs to be combined or separated without disassembling the unit. There's a picture of this below.
• Front (black) fill ports! There's still top fill ports for each reservoir as well.
• Lots of distance between rear nozzle sockets for better support of 3rd-party fittings.
• To assist with loop-backs on the rear of the product, we will be releasing some new sliding 180º connection nozzles soon.
• This was added into the RP-450X2 later in its production, but we've kept the front printing on the RP-402X2 smaller and less obtrusive.

Materials are the same, solid acetal with acrylic/aluminum bezel, nickel-plated brass fittings and EPDM o-rings. We'll also be selling a silver aluminum bezel for this model.

This shows the side plug extending into both reservoirs to keep them separate. Another plug is included with the unit that just caps the outside, which combines them. This piece is larger than G 1/4 to keep the joining path as wide as possible.

I think the mounting tabs on the heat sink will prevent using it.

Unfortunately, there were issues placing the pumps closer together in this orientation so we couldn't provide enough space for the extra heat sinks. We're still looking into alternatives.

Hmm. Looking it closer i see tiny problem. - It doesn't look like DDCs by other vendors (well, except MCP35X by swiftech) can be used, at least with stock casing with mounting "legs" unmodified. Of course, those can be simply sawn/filed off (probably just one removed is enough), and PMP-400 is not much more expensive then other 3.25.

Ah, you're right. We order it without the feet, which are actually just cut off. Should be really easy for other versions of the DDC.

Koolance: if it's not too hard, you can design some minor .1 or "b" revision of it with cutout(-s?) for those legs. I doubt it will affect selling of these variants, as that flaw really is of little importance and anyone can cut off legs from existing pumps or buy for new builds pumps without them in first place, and all the rest features/improvements are 99% already there in current version aswell.
BTW, was it hard to design in ability to switch from serial to parallel? I somehow guesstimated initially that it would overly complex design/rise price of product, but you have kept pricing same :up:

I was looking at the unit after you mentioned DDC with feet. In order to do that, the unit would have to be longer or else have a foot sticking down or back from the unit (in which case the other foot would overlap one of the drive bay point points). I think it might be easier just to offer spare plastic pump bases for those who don't want to cut their own. I'm checking into some options now.

Tim: hmm, i didn't think of spare plastic casing, but after you mentioned it - imho it would be best to sell them optionally. But as many are cheapskates, probably there will be almost no buyers. But it's good to have option for piece of mind of those 1/1000, that wish to use existing DDCs with this restop, yet are scared to cut legs from original casings by themselves :) (and i don't think number will be higher of such people unwilling to do such simple "mod". After all, most LC builds involve much more extreme modifications to case - so don't make mistake in making many of these spares :))
BTW, there is also option to sell casing of unfixable anymore RMA-ed PMP-400s as such spares. I doubt many buyers for such spares, so even if you have very little number of them - it still might do, without designing anything new.

/drool. Will this fit into the Corsair Obsidian without modification? :shocked:

As long as you have two consecutive 5.25" bays and 5" available behind the unit (plus nozzle/hose space), it should.

Does the front cover prevent this unit from being pushed back some into the case?

If I wanted to keep this in two 5.25" bays, but hide the front of this unit with bay covers (TJ-07) and use the back 5.25" frame mounting holes in the case, is it possible? I like the clean "all bay cover" look, but like this idea.

What are the plugs that extend across reservoir interior made of?

This is the Koolest thing ever. Dammit, why do I have to wait until the 27th to order! My build awaits!

The front aluminum bezel is wider than the acrylic window and acetal body of the unit. The bezel is 148mm x 85mm, while the body is 146mm x 84mm. Whether you can insert it deeper into your 5.25" bays would depend on your chassis, but I don't think the bezel itself will fit that far back without having the sides shaved down 1mm on either side.

We ship lots to Canada, but receive little feedback on duties. It's really up to how the individual customs official decides to classify it. I've heard 20% is typical, but there are horror stories of 100%+. FedEx or USPS tend to be lower on brokerage and are offered by many of our resellers. Right now, we offer only UPS on our website.

Just to confirm, this will allow for 2 PMP400's to run in serial? Is there an image available illustrating the flow path from one pump outlet to the other's inlet?

From what I understand, the flow path for serial operation is external, done with your own fittings. You leave the plug separating the two res chambers in place. The first pump pumps into the second pumps res.

That's the main improvement over the first design, is the separate chambers in the res to allow for proper serial operation.

I am axiously awaiting a performance review, and hope to get one very soon (pending good reviews);)

I don't think the weight of the acetal will allow much vibration to the chassis, but it's going to depend on the individual case.

Hmm, this is contrary to what one of your techs told me on the phone. If the short plug is used, and pump 2 dies, wouldn't pump 1 just recirculate water in the res? (I'm probably overlooking something obvious)

The reason I ask is because it would then require that the second reservoir chamber is completely full (ie. no air) to ensure maximum transference of pressure / flow gain. Otherwise, it would be like one pump pumping into the reservoir that leads to a second pump - I may be wrong, but won't you lose some of the pressure gain in doing this?

Would it not be better by going in series and have one pump pump directly into the inlet of the second, rather than the chamber that feeds it? Isn't this the main reason why the XSPC res top does better than other res tops - because the pump pumps into its own inlet via that tube down the middle?

Yeah, I also want to know how it performs compared with the XSPC DDC res's. I'm using a XSPC right now. It's good and all, but the glue that XSPC uses in these res's smells so bed.

It would be nice if Koolance can show us the internal flow paths of the res. And since the pumps are mounted to the sides of the res instead of bottom, it's easy to accidentally run the pumps dry during iniial filling.

Seeming as i have 2x ddc pumps im not quite sure to run tem in 2 separate loops seeming as the reservoir handles both single and dual loops.. Loops will be quite restrictive with 2x gpus, Full chipset/mosfet/Ram.. Still thinking of Serial though..

Well Series always runs better as it gives more pressure running 2x DDC's.. Martin has done a test and the curves running 2x 355s were great compare to one.. With serial you run both pumps together so its 1 big pump, Noticed also using this res that when running serial you cant use dual loop meaning you cant have 2 different colours dyes only single ddc setups would be ideal for dual..

Yes, I know that.

But when you think of typical dual DDC series, one pump pumps into the inlet of the other.

With this bayres/pump combo, I'm wondering if the fact that the first DDC seems to pump into the res chamber feeding the DDC will have any impact on flow rate - namely, a diminishing of the flow rate when compared with two DDC's with just normal tops or XSPC res tops.

I'm only guessing here, but it seems that the first pump pumping into the second pump's res chamber will have maximal effect only if the second res chamber is completely filled. Even then, it seems like it will loose that little bit of extra pressure / flow you get by pumping straight into a second pump's inlet...

Example:


Pump 1 Outlet -----------> ---------------> Pump 2 Inlet (traditional series dual DDC)


Pump 1 outlet --------------> ---------> Res chamber --feed--> Pump 2 inlet (RP-402X2)

Am I completely wrong here?

If you look at martin's pics one pump does feed into the other, which is series.. Similar to the dual bay xspc reservoir i've owned and never had any real issues..

Will need some testing, but I don't think the res filled amount matters as long as it's adequate to prevent air from pulling out the outlet. I suppose there might be some frictional energy loss dumping into a reservoir, but the pressure energy remains regardless.

I also think you'll get roughly the same thing with separate pumping loops but shared reservoir. I personally would probably keep two loops and just share the reservoir to maximize CPU flow rates. The only real benefit to series is to have redundant pumping. With an rpm sensor, it's pretty simple to connect that to the cpu fan header and set a shutdown rpm.

Anyhow, I don't know much about these...just speculating.

Yes, but that looks like an inlet to the res that feeds the pump, rather than the pump inlet itself - if you look at testing for restops for a single DDC, you'll see that the XSPC res top always comes out on top because of that little tube which dumps water straight into the inlet of the pump. I would assume the same logic would apply to dual pumps - pumping into inlet is better for flow/pressure than pumping into res chamber that feeds inlet.

Sure, if you were looking to run dual/series for just the cpu block, two pumps in series will give you double pressure or about 30% more flow rate and a hair better temps with adequate rad.

I was just thinking in terms of a full cpu/gpu system..one big loop with pumps in series vs breaking it up into two loops but sharing the reservior will probaly give you roughly the same thing. Only difference is you could selectively balance or unbalance pumping power between parts. I would probably keep it separate and spoil the cpu with a pump to itself and just share the reservoirs.

Testing will sort out the performance questions..not sure.

I think this is quite sensible because then you'd benefit from the extra rad of one component when its not in use.

IE - GPU not at load but CPU at load with a shared res allows the CPU to benefit from the GPU rad cooling the coolant, as far as the extent to which the coolant is shared goes.

There are a number of different ways to connect these units as Martin has kindly illustrated. He and Skinnee are receiving units for review.

For a solid piece of machined acetal, I don't think so. If it was a traditional acrylic/epoxied dual 5.25" reservoir, perhaps (that's cheaper, but less reliable).

How about flow/pressure test compared with popular aftermarket tops?
Those volutes (at least the one pictured in the OP) look like simple circles with a relief cut. Not the best performing type of volute IIRC.

Obviously this res isn't intended to directly compete with aftermarket tops, but it would be interesting to see the numbers. It could make the difference between tops and a tube res and this one for a lot of people (well, for me).

I will be reveiwing this reservoir along with the Koolance tops and reservoirs with a noise and elbow/system configurations emphasis. This is not at all a pump top shootout, but it will compare bay reservoir vs stand alone top v stand alone top with reservoir. If all goes well, I should start this testing this weekened and have at least something to share within the next week or so. Parts should arrive today..:)

Nice to see a few in stock. I think it's a really good option and low cost if you compare what it would cost for 2 tops and 2 reservoirs. A huge non monetary cost is space, and this takes up little space compared to separate pieces.

I like the way this looks, like a solid piece of awesome.

I've got the Koolance equivalent and then some...everything I need to evaluate a plethora of different pumping configurations and mounting options. I had planned to do a combination of standard pumps through pumps with tops and the newer reservoir tops. Also an emphasis on mounting methods, elbow effects on pumps, and noise in general. Koolance also sent both voltage controllers/transformers so I'll get a chance to tweak voltages from 7-24V (PMP450 pumps) and also for the first time get a chance to play with the PMP-450 "Strong" model and compare it to the vario. Also can compare the pump top vs the pump top with reservoir directly to see the effects of reservoir placement. All sorts of little pumping details that I've wanted to explore for a long time now..

Going to be busy on this for a while...:clap:

I spent all evening just admiring the quality bits I get to play with over the next several weeks.

Got a couple of snaps done is all, but I plan to dig in this weekend. Soo many options and alternatives to explore......:D

edit: The RP-452x2 actually comes first... then the RP-402X2.

Email tech at koolance dot com and they can likely find one for you to purchase. The pump motor/impeller and PCB come completely out of the original plastic base when disassembled, so that's the safest way to cut the feet rather than risk damaging any important parts.

I made a short video on the comparison between the Koolance RP-402X2 and the Danger Den D5 Monsoon.

It might be of interest to those considering buying, nothing conclusive but just my personal take on it.

Well I ordered a 402X2 today for my twin 35Xs instead of the EK res and the ek dual top.
Going to save some room in the case.

aesthetically koolance looks nicer but how they perform against each other running 1 pump ??

When is the new new sliding 180º connectors coming out? I just hope everything will be available by the time the GTX 590 water blocks come out.

Our serial connector is now available for this product. There's a bonus acrylic piece included for the lower reservoir that will improve flow performance further. These are likely to run out of stock shortly, but we'll have more by next Monday.

Now that third tapped screw hole makes more sense in the left reservoir...I figured that was for something later.

Thanks! It took 6 new tools. We're working to get the internal nickel coating more uniform for next batch, but that shouldn't be an issue for you non-Al guys. ;)

Tim, Got any diagrams for both those serial connectors?...and will they be made available without the acrylic and screws at some point? I may have a need for one of them and don't have either res. :D ;)

Well, right now I have a need for a GPU-210 to N/B block on a m-ITX need. The setup I got now for testing is hacked together using 4 Koolance 45's, 2 short spacers, 2 long spacers and a male to male swivel adapter...it's ugly as sin and expensive as all hell.

Tim: you might think of adding to this connector some way to change it's length in middle (like some sli/d-fittings?), and as some noted here, it can make interesting way to connect nearby waterblocks, especially if priced this low.

My 402x2 should be arriving today in the mail. i was wondering though, what do i need to do, to set it up for 1 large reservoir and pumps in series?
i understand there is a plug to pull out or something?

barfastic: there is plug on side which opens/closes hole in inner wall between two reservoirs inside. For serial connection IIRC you need to close it and connect outlet of pump 1 with inlet of pump 2 on back of reservoir with two fittings and piece of tubing, or (much preferably) get this newly announced kit from koolance, which will make serial setup easier/better looking/with more flow then with plain tubing+fittings.

but wont connecting the p1 out to the p2 in, just put water into the second reservoir area which in return is the same reservoir as the first?
do you udnerstand what i mean?

Diagrams should be up on our site pretty soon. I don't think we will offer one without the acrylic piece since the price difference would be negligible.

It's being considered. We already make something similar for our RAM coolers, but not with copper pipe.

There's two options. The first is simply to keep the reservoirs separate as serial customers are doing now. If you want to join the reservoirs, you can use the acrylic piece we supply with this new serial connector to avoid pushing liquid into the reservoir from the first pump.

so, as is, without the connector the flow of water when connected in serial is this:
res-> pump -> res -> pump
i.e its not really pump out to pump inlet, it goes through a reservoir, so the water loses its flow.... right?

and with your new connector it becomes

res -> pump -> pump

correct?

The thought just occurred to me to check the bay drives themselves and seeing the DDC is the longer of the 2, it's actually short for my needs by about 6-7mm. :(

Waterlogged: connector + saw + 1" of tubing + 2 zipties. :D
