E8500 at Mini-Cascade - EVGA 790i & 9800GX2 Stock : 110K on my fav game :-)

I've been quite busy in my work, with no time at all to play my favorite game..

Bought a E8500 Q746A that seems to have some potential and specially don't have cold boot like the other I tested...

This quick run have been done in my good old Mini-Cascade for very pratical reason: the rotary cascade makes to much noise to bench a night and wake my wife and neighbours :D

Setup :
- E8500 Q746A cooled by the Mini-Cascade (-90ºC evap)
- EVGA 790i Ultra SLI stock
- EVGA 9800GX2 Stock
- Cellshock Blue "Pedro Rocha Edition" - thanks Saaya ;)
- Silverstone 1200W
- Some old school tweaking ;)

5.500Mhz - not bad, this CPU seems to have potential ;)


Now the first run in My Favorite Game - with very low OC on the 9800GX2: only 750MHz GPU's - 1140MHz Memory ..

Regarding PCIe speed, at least in the 790i the 9800GX2 freeze when overclocked at more than 110Mhz PCIe speed ..dunno why :(

Using 4.9 Lod on Nature, not the minimap tweak/cheat .. no sportsman should use it :rolleyes:

Maybe that's because the GPU is be clocked too high, I thought the core clock is derived from PCIe bus frequency on the new Geforce 9 cards. I may be mistaken, but maybe you could make a little test:
1. run all test with standard clocks and PCIe at 110,
2. run test with core clock increased by 10% and PCIe at 100

Just my thoughts.

I did another run, E8500 still on the mini-cascade.

This time also run 3DMark 2005, here is the result:

35K for Nvidia "single card" not bad, considering 2005 is now ATI CrossfireX territory ;)


Much more important, I improved My Favorite Game with a few more MHz and more tweaking.. Here is what I got:

In this run, CH was not perfect I saw near 390 CH on other run but crashed on Nature, also only run CL one time..

So 110K may be quite possible with this E8500 on the Mini-Cascade and the Stock 9850GX2 :D

That's why I love this game, everything optimization and tweaking count it's not just a matter of pure CPU and GPU power :D

CPU-Z is not reading correctly, set 1.975v on bios (reads 1.94v on Bios) and the EVGA 790i have a big vdrop on load :(

I need to do the VDrop Mod on this 790i, anyone found it ??

Anyway the E8500 produce much less heat than the QX9650, is almost impossible to run the QuadCore at 1.9v in the Mini-Cascade ..so this small cascade is good for dual cores and its so silent compared to the rotary cascade.. In terms of noise the Mini-Cascade produce a simiar noise of a Prometeia MachII, in fact have 2 Danfoss NL11F taken from old Promies ;)

Yes, all the 174.xx have "CH bug", so at this moment 173.67 is mandatory for 2001 :yepp:

2.175 Volts (set in bios) for 7-6-5-18, more or less the same voltage I use in X38 board for similar speed / latency's

yep , i think all 9000 series have that !

if the relation PCI frequency/GPU clock is the same as 9600GT , then 9800GX2 Default using PCI-E @ 110Mhz = 660Mhz Default Clock (600x1.10)

you can use P1 as well at 550 pedro (p1 has the biggest impact on RAM efficiency)

i did some 5GHz runs with 556Mhz FSB with both enabled on SS phase....i'm sure it would be 560+ stable with both

but i could not boot at 575MHz with both enabled where with P2 alone no problem 595MHz FSB on SS

i would love to see you bench past 600MHz
i could not get it stable with my current CPU yet :shrug:

If you look of the screen cap above, the 110K run was done at 577MHz FSB, at this speed no way I can enable P1, but P2 give a good boost on Lobbies, CH and even Dragos..


Some Tips:
1 - Never give up of finding your perfect run!
2 - Test everything - mem ratios, FSB, timmings etc for the perfect spot;
3 - Don't rush - near perfect run may take a lot of atempts and time;
4 - Try Lobbies and CH first, they are the most demanding in terms of CPU and mem timmigs;
5 - Lod 4.9 for Nature, others between 3.1 and 4.5;
6 - Most important tip of all : have fun and relax, that's the main objective of the greatest game of all times :D

Now go play 2001 :yepp:

yeah true man unless you try subzero cooling on NB probably won't happen with both P1 and P2 enabled

i asked nvidia to give me some explanations on these timings and also to give us manual access to them in case we can further tweak them but from the sound of it i think they are keeping their cards close to the chest for some odd reason................they really should have a more sharing attitude but hey i guess in business it may be more cut throat than they'd like :shrug: donno

cascade is such a perfect toy to go along with '01 tuning isn't it :up:

did some tests last night with -40C on the chip base
CPU -15C to -20C loaded

567*9 with both P1 and P2 enabled no problems
i did a 32M run on Vista (err Win2008 Server) and got 9m13s :shocked:
considering the OS and not all tweaks done yet that's pretty bloody fast :D

just need a nice 10xmulti CPU now hahah...hopefully those E8600 chips come out soon

i'll push some more and see if i can get it stable at high-570 or 580 somewhere with both P1 & P2 enabled

I dont have any doubt you can beat my 110K with your E8400 on cascade and the Stock 9800GX2, you got more than talent for that :)

Just be prepared to take some time on optimization the 790i and tweaking the drivers, but then again that's the beauty of my fav game ..it's not just brute CPU and GPU power... :D

The vcore is not real, I measured 1.96v idle and the board sure drops a bit the vcore in load :shakes:

Maybe with vdrop mod I can get 5.510Mhz (580FSB) benchable.. when I have some time need to buy a VR for that ..

Anyway the mini-cascade is ideal for this dual core E8500, coold boot probs start to apear at around -105ºC :rolleyes:

For those who ask (again) in PM's here is the runnig order: LH -> LL -> CH -> DL -> DH -> CL -> Nature..

Used Lod 4.9 and have to drop the OC on the card a bit in Nature, it is full stock EVGA 9800GX2, no mods at all, so 775-1145 is not to bad for a full retail card :D

don't you think you will improve more if you use lower LOD for all other tests than Nature :confused:

just asking as i see others including KP using smaller values for other tests (think he mentioned it somewhere on forum)

I manged to boot to Windows with booth P1 and P2 enable at 577Mhz FSB and here is the result in terms of memory bandwith :

Unfortunately 3DMark does not run at 577 P1 & P2 enable ..run fine with P2 enable...

The max of 3D benchable with P1 & P2 memory setting Enable seems to be 565Mhz in the cascade ... the loose on CPU is not compensate by the adedd memory bandwith :rolleyes:

Today, with P2 Enable and 578Mhz FSB I managed to get 111K with 9800GX2 stock ..so in another run a bit better than 111K seems possible ..

Better put some VideoCard OC on all tests, CH specially gain a bit with vid card speed :yepp:

thats because of core speed, but nature handles higher clocks on rams, as drago low :)

OK, for the very 1st time I used tweak (or cheat????), I didnt even know how to enable it, but Mike gave me the directions ;)

Here is what I get :

I only enable mimap on Nature (other tests seems not gain) and with equal OC on CPU and on 9800GX2 stock the gains are :
- Nature jump from 1442fps to 1566fps
- Total score jump from 110893 to 112923

I discussed this thing with Mike, he argue that after all mipmap is just extreme LOD (LOD at maximum level), but I'm not full conviced yet..

I will NOT submit this score on the ORB..

Maybe if I have strong evidence that - k|ngp|n / pro (i4memory.com) / mickeymouse (benchers that are above me on 2001 orb) used mimap on their SLI 8800GTS runs I will submit it..

But I dont have and I presume they are also Sportsmans, so I will stay way from mipmap ..

Second...many of you guys already know my take on it. I'm more or less in agreement with Mike.

However, what it is and what it isn't isn't relevant. What is relevant is the community's decision as a whole. The overwhelming response is that mipmap tweaks are unacceptable. Since this is the case, we should all refrain from using them.

The issue is that many people are using them anyways, which is why I have said that its adoption is inevitable. It doesn't matter whether we like it or not. It's here to stay. (Just like quad crossfire and quad SLi, lol)

In this case, though, Pedro, you might want to consider removing the screenshot as well...I have a feeling it will only entice more people to start using it.

Match my cpu/gpu clocks with the gts or gx2 and you will see that lol :D.

In fact I never used mimap before and dont plan to use it in the future, the idea is to give 2001 lovers an idea of the impact of mimap..

As I stated I believe top 2001 are all sportsmans and they dont use mimap!!

Dinos you are nice guy and top bencher, but you should relax a bit a think twice before do some posts..

Maybe you are right in you sugestion I shoud removed the pic also, but on the other hand this can very usefull to allow users to quantify how many points mimap means in 2001 -

Benching for me is pure hobby I'm not competing for anything, that's the main reason not to use mimap - I love to see FPS counting and with mimap we can't even see the letter, thats absurd:(

I'm 100% sure you dont use mimap tweak Vince, my friend.

Now you sure are one the bencher in all the world with less reasons to use it, you have huge amounts of talent and acess to fantastic hardware (some of then gently give by a common friend of yours)

You should really try the dual core with giant FSB in 2001, it's so so fun - you have big jumps in Lobbies and CH just by raising the FSB from 570 to 577 .. it's really fun :D

I will try this E8500 on the big cascade, can't imagine what wil be the score at 600x9.5 - hope after -100ºC the cold bug / boot dont start to get serious troubles ..

Maybe coz kiwi means the gains is really low compared to other cards...

after what i have read about mip it should give you quite a good gain, but we "only" saw 1k improvement on his 01 run with mip and no gains in other tests only nature, so it might be that kiwi meant to mean...

No, I mean that nvhardpage hasn't been updated yet to use MIP with 9800gx2. Same situation as older nvhardpage version and 8800gtx. A year or two (after 8800gtx release) ago MIP didn't work with 8800 series, now it works.

Who said that he did? You can do the test with MIP enabled but there are no gains because it gets ignored by drivers/card/old nvhardpage version/whatever the reason :)

kiwi--If you look at Pedro's post he states that there are no gains in '01 aside from nature. There there is a very significant 100 FPS gain though.

ok, I see now that is normal for MIP, it only helps in nature. But I have another question for Pedro then. What driver did you use and what nvhardpage version? Because driver 173.67 + nvhard 3.6 beta 1 shouldn't work

I updated the bios to the P04 Bios the EVGA released today and the results of the new bios seems quite good..

So advise all EVGA 790i Ultra SLI owners to upgrade to P04 Oficial Bios!

Now I can run easy all 2001 tests at 5.500 (579x9.5) with P2 Enable and, don't forget that is on the Mini-Cascade!


Description of the setup :

- Core2D E8500 Q746A cooled by the Mini-Cascade (-90ºC evap) |
- EVGA 790i Ultra SLI stock P04 Bios |
- EVGA 9800GX2 Stock No Mods775-1140 |

No new options from 3R2 in fact, but gain more FSB and stability (with previous bios was not possible to run all test at 5.50GHz), so maybe they are not same and some improvements have been done ;)

Anyway it's not the driver version but nvhardpage version that matters. MIP does work with 9800gx2 after all with older 3.5 beta 2 version and not the latest beta 3.6 version
