    Which Opteron for phase-change?

    I have a -57/-71c phase change and I want to get rid of my 3700+ because it has a massive cold bug.

    Ive been looking at the results on the Opterons and they look promising at low price.

    Which one should I get? I dont get the number system yet. I want a 12x multi and a single-core.

    Looking to hit 3.5ghz or better if possible!

    Thanks!

    what about the 170?

    Also, is one series overclocking better than the other or is it luck of the draw?

    EDIT: 170 is only 10x right?

    170 is 10x multiplier, dual core

    165=9x mult dual core
    170=10x mult dual core
    175=11x mult dual core
    180=12x mult dual core

    Becarefull, almost all Opteron have cold bug, even with single stage. Tried 2 148's on Dry Ice and no go, at prommy they have a light cold bug (if u keep them at full load they'll run fine)

    What else should I get? My phase change is as cold or colder than DICE, so what do you recommend?

    i don't know you have nice temps but maybe too cold for opteron.
    venice still rocking for me - but because of missing cache out of choice.
    maybe an fx?
    but still too expensive in my opinion.
    not that easy think you will have to try several optis to find one without coldbug at your temps.

    Say chip A has a cold bug at -20c, and chip B has one at -100c. Does that mean chip B's mem controller is better? In theory anyway?

    All 90nm chips have cold bug. Ie. for FX57...up to 0530 prod. date will scale ok with -30c cpu core or around -70C evap.temp.
    0531 and up cold bugged big time and not even load windows @-30C core.
    Imo the most important for phase changer isn't how cold it scaled, but how far up temp. stretch between idle and load or how strong it can sustained the load @ 1.7 or 1.8Vcore. The less fluctuation the better.

    nice unit!! For the A64 90nm, my previous 4600+ is the only one no cold bug, oh also Dumo's 3500+. That 4600 can do 1:1 for 325x10,313x11.. all under pcice cascade for at least -108c full loaded.

    Some good info here, I've also been wondering about this recently...I'm looking at ideas for a new project that I've never seen done that'd involved a s939 chip...and I'm trying to find what's most likely gonna do me the most good under DICE.

    Do most cold bugged s939 chips seem to "konk out" at similar points or does it vary quite a bit. Just wondering, cus if I'm gonna be using DICE, couldn't the mixture of acetone/dice be offset to create a "not as cold" sub-zero environment?

    Obviously a chip without a cold bug to begin with would be nice, to be able to aim for the full potential of what the DICE setup could bring me...but what is my best option going to be without dropping a grand on an FX?

    I would get a 175 dual core opty, that evap head won't stay at -70 long with dual sd cores @ 3ghz.

    Yeah you could use more acetone and fewer dry ice chips to try and find what temp the cold bug kicks in at and then just keep temps around there. Theres a thread somewhere i recently read where their chip had a cold bug at around -20 so use more acetone than usual to keep temps around -15.

    Yeah, just read the thread myself...that's where that came from...sounds like a plan.

    Reading a bunch of threads and it looks like for now a 146 is my goal...I have NO idea when this project of mine will/would come to life, but gotta keep planning as if it's going to, or I lose my motivation.

    You must be really lucky not to get cold bug.

    Agree, most results I've seen had cold bug.

    I hope I'm not coming across the wrong way but......
    I don't know why people even bother stating their evap temps @ idle/load. What's important is the actual core temp of the cpu. Imagine a situation where you have a bad mount - your evap temps would remain extremely low while at the same time, your cpu is melting down. That being said, Stealth - may I ask what your load temps are like? I read through your thread in the link and you only show 2 pics of the unit idling - once with a bad mount @ -4 and another @ 1.62Vcore -27C idle. While that's a nice temp, you shouldn't have to worry about the cold bug too much especially if you get an opty. Those things will load your unit like no other cpu you'll ever see. If I were you, I'd look for a pre-week 31 fx57. Your unit should pair up nicely with one....
