    Overclocking with Radeon X1800 XT

It sure has been a busy week for me with R5xx. I got back from Ibiza on monday night and have been running benchmarks all week with Doom 3, Battlefield 2, Half-life 2 and Call of Duty 2 not to forget 3DMark05.

Yesterday I ordered 10 kg of dry ice and did some overclocking testing with Radeon X1800 XT. Thanks to ATI I had appropriate tools and support for that.

I was able to push the GPU easily to 860 MHz until I hit the cap thanks to a programming issue in a current overclocking tool. Unfortunately clock speeds anything higher than 860 MHz froze the system. And I mean while setting the speeds, not running 3DMark. 860 MHz ran perfectly fine without artifacts.

Anyway, I already got a fix to this problem which should solve the 860 MHz limit and I'll be testing that next week. Memory runs with small artifacts at 940 MHz.. it definitely needs some more voltage and 1 GHz shouldn't be a problem at all. My crappy FX-57 was running at 3,6 GHz during the tests. I really need to get a better one!

I started the tests with Sapphire PURE Crossfire motherboard but faced alot problems with our custom made 1320W PSU and dry ice on CPU. Basically the board didn't even boot. I switched to DFI's LanPary nF4-SLI-DR and started testing.

The highest I could get at this point was 12116. More to come next week, stay tuned. Also I'm looking to get my hands on R520 Crossfire. With Radeon X1800 XT and MasterCard I didn't see any improvement in performance

Very nice results for single card, congrats

You are quite a lucky bastard (pardon the phrase) not only do you get to play around with a graphics card i cant afford you get it for free and before everyone else

What is the average user going to see for an overclock with water cooling and volt mods? I assume about 10.5-11K.

It's great indeed for a single card. Nice work. Congratz!

    Edit:

Should go higher than 860 but it will also hit the limit at some point! Maybe there is a fix for that also

Yes, easy. I used 1,43 V for GPU (default is 1,33 V) and I'm not sure if it was even needed. No artifacts of any kind at 860 MHz under dry ice. Now I have a fix for this 860 MHz limit (which hopefully works) and I will be aiming for 1 GHz next week with LN2.

1 GHz for GPU and 1 GHz for memory would a nice round numbers, what do you think?

We'll see that hopefully soon. I don't want to speculate such a thing because with two cards 3DMark05 becomes very CPU limited (atleast with 7800 GTX SLI).
