Did I damage my Winchester 3200+?

    Hi all

I currently have a Winchester 3200+ installed in my system

it has been runnin 10x241 for some months now

when i started testing it for the highest speed in the beginning i got it 101% stable at 10x246

but when the warm weather started i noticed stability was lost

so i backed down to the 10x241 at 1.55V x104%, which i tested 101% stable back then (with roomtemp of +-20°C)

since then i didnt really prime or occt anymore, i just played gta: sa

after awhile gta crashed sometimes, and temps were also higher then they used to be when occting at 10x241 which seems very strange to me

on the hottest summerdays the cpu became till 72°C once after a few hours of gta:sa , and i remember a highest occt temp of 61°C from when it was still stable if im right
most of the times it crashed out of gta:sa at 69°C, and i even think that wasnt allways on extremely hot days
i live in belgium btw, so nice summerdays are usually between 20-25°C, and the really hot ones around 30°C, 35°C perhaps happened ones or twice this year

i should have acted back then, but gta was too addictive, and i just kept playing

another reason i didnt start over finding the new 101% stable speed was that i was gonna buy a Venice 3200+ cpu soon

well, actually i did a few days ago... so i wanted to install the newest official dfi bios (623-3)... but offcourse i dont flash in an unstable environment, so i backed down the 10x241 to 10x200, leaving all other settings intact, thinking this should CERTAINLY do the trick since this was 101% stable at 10x241 a few months before!

but after a reboot i decided to at least try a few minutes of occt just to be sure...

occt didnt even pass 10 secs

    so i started freakin out
    i decreased voltage to 1.55V instead of 1.55V x104%
tried occt again, perhaps 15secs now
reboot, load bios defaults (also once tested 101% stable)
tried occt again, about the same 15 secs
reboot, decrease multiplier to 8x200, increase voltage to 1.5V
tried occt again, allmost a minute this time
reboot, memtest test8 for 1 loop: no probs

    damn peepz

    im freakin out!!

i wanne install my new venice, but i still wanne sell this winchester!!

    wtf is happening plzzz?

    edit:
just tried lowering speed to 6x200 at 1.375V with chipset and ltd voltage up 2 steps
and now prime is passing for some tests allready
temp while priming is 43°C now

    yeah ur right

but gta: sa was soooo fun :/

i edited my message a lil btw
that 72°C was after some hours of gta: sa offcourse, not while idling

but what can i do to fix it?

and what the hell went wrong with my cooling? it used to run extremely stable at 10x241 with a do-able temp...

damn i just hope i didnt damage anything

edit: occt just crashed after 5 mins with the 6x200 settings, new record, but still BAD

damn im getting really clueless here...

To get serious again: Maybe U damaged Your CPU with those :banana::banana::banana:ing attemps - try to set it under water or single phase and check if it is running stable.

    If not - definately K.I.A. - then R.I.P..........

It sounds like you fried the memory controller, that's just too hot period.....

Of note, even with the stock cooler on that chip at that voltage, it should never have gotten that hot unless it wasn't making good contact with the cooler or the case was really badly ventilated.....

    its a VERY well ventilated cm stacker case (2 hd-bays, so 3x 120mm fans + 1x 80mm fan)

i dont really understand it either :/

C'm on Masta - U could put a car engine's watercooler fan on Your CPU - it is still aircooling. These temps were too much.............

anyone around who can tell me quickly? (wanne get goin!)

my old winchester boxed cooler is from AVC ad seems to have a copper bottom with alot alu fins
the new venice boxed cooler is from no brand, is completely alu, has less, but thicker fins, and has a thicker base

Take a look at the specs - watts, rpms & size. Chose the better one.

It seems your old one didn't do so hot (or did too hot) last time anyhow, use the new one.

It is/was my understanding that anything over 1.5V on air would slowly kill an A64? I wish I had a better motherboard my AGP lock breaks at 255 and my chip is there with 1.4V.

I don't think the voltage is the concern at that level as much as the heat is...1.5 is no big deal imo

    72 C !!!

You have to use a heatsink you know
I would defenitely recommend you to
who knowes it might even keep the next cpu alive

i would take a look at the cool before i replaced with a new one
    Hope you can RMA it

1,5V is not much the cpu will still last longer than you need to

it is only 0,1V above default

    I wouldt worry

that venice isnt occt / prime stable either at stock speed, and also not at 8x 200

gonna try and find out if it has anything to do with a bios setting

with my venice it seems directly dependend on the dram voltage....

the 2.6V that used to be enough had to be increased to 2.7V or higher to get it stable (still tryin to find out which voltage it likes best)

it was unstable with stock speeds (10x200), and even 8x200 when dram voltage was at 2.6V

with the 2.9V im testing now i could do 10x255, 8x300 and 9x285 (occt for +- 5 mins)

im VERY glad my venice started working...
but im still confused by my winchester too
im wondering if it needed the same dram voltage change to become stable again...

dont really feel like retesting it though.... i just wanne sell that biatch...

sounds like you should try a different motherboard with the winnie and the venice to see if thats the prob
