    [need help] X800XL + Ati Silencer 5 rev 2 Problems

    hi guys, i really need your advice and help here....

    here's the condition;

    i have a powercolor x800xl vivo , and everything running normal.. so i decided to throw an ati silencer 5 to give my card a decent cooling, and it does (but that not currently the issue)

    my issue is, suddenly the ati silencer's fan dead, so i switch to my stock fan.. and no go (stock cooling fan dead also)...

    so i think its my vga fan power connector is broken.. so i RMA my card..and i got my brand new card..

    i try it with stock cooling... it runs very well(the fan ).. plug the ati silencer.. and its dead again!! so switch to my stockfan.. and you know what... its dead!!!

    so i decided to go with different route... i mod my ati silencer to standard 12v molex connector (did i do something wrong?) :

    and then.... it's smoking/burnt!!

    oh my... i'm lost here.. need your advice...

    my PSU rail :

    multimeter :
    12v = 12.35
    5v = 5.02

    windows :
    12v = 12.2
    5v = 4.9

    thank you in advance,

    dion

    thanks for the reply..

    @silvestre : it's ati silencer 5 rev. 2 - so its compatible with XL's

    i'll rma my ati silencer tommorow, but i need to know what i've done wrong.. since my vga power connector allready dead , so i must mod the ati silencer's power cable into PSU power molex / mobo power (CPU fan plug)

    i hope its only a "broken" ati Silencer though... i'll update soon when i got my new Ati Silencer..

    Sounds like something on the silencer is shorting out. Mine works with no problems.

    this page describes the function of each wire

    "black with black and red (VGA) with yellow (PSU). The yellow cable from the VGA is an RPM signal, that is not needed."

    btw: do the ram pads stick on? or do you apply thermal paste for the heat transfer?

    This seems to be a wide known problem with the ati 5 rev2 because it just happened to me and my x850xt pe. I just went ahead and rewired my connector on the stock heatsink and fan and put it on the mb fan header. Now that my fan header is dead on the video card , i am quite upset. My ATI 5 rev 2 unit has a burnt spot behind the fan where it looks like it shorted out , i heard a huge POP when it happened and some blue sparks. But yes the artic cooling is a rip off and i was going to get a new one but i already read 2 posts now of this issue. Here is another post of a person which had the same issue.
    http://forums.overclockersclub.com/A...ng-t47912.html

    I wrote the company and told them what happen and i will write back if i get a response. I am totally pissed off now that i have to pay for shipping to send the artic cooling unit back and send my ati x850xt pe off to ati.

    There should be some kind of compensation for this mess

    @unrealcpu : thx alot for the info bro.. i just thought that i'm the only one here.. pls keep me update on this one... i'm really2 pissed off too here..

    why? : cos i just broke my RMA'ed card..because of this AC product *sigh*... nad the second is.. when i RMA my AC ( with a burnt pcd fan etc ), at first i got a brand new AC (which killed the 2nd X800XL .. ), 2 day after i RMA, the local store said that " we told by the distributor your card is void warranty because you soldered the wire, and a burnt PCB - so we must charge you for that RMA'ed Ati Silencer"

    WTF? i just broke 2 X800XL and then i MUST paid for another $33 ?? (now thats a rip off

    i say lets throw some emails to them (the AC company)..

    Ok update, I sent a email stateing this to Artic Cooling tech support 8 days ago and have not heard a response. I sent this email twice. My ati silencer 5 rev 2 is going back to the directron for a full refund if i do not hear from the company by tuesday morning EST time. I am also sending the tech support another email with a link to this thread. We should all be compensated for this ordeal in some way.

    Here is my orignal email sent 3 times no response

    To whom it may concern,
    I live in the USA and i recently purchased a ATI 5 Rev 2 VGA cooling product from http://www.directory.com/

    I am very familiar with your products and how they perform. I recently upgraded to a X850 XT PE and purchased your ATI 5 Rev 2 cooling unit for my video card. I have purchased one of these before from a previous model X800 XT PE. I assembled the vga cooling unit perfectly again this time , however when i booted my computer i was in for a surprise.
    The fan on the ATI 5 rev 2 popped and then blew . You can see a burn mark clearly on the underside of the fan. I am now in the processes of RMAing the unit however i am having second thoughts. My video card Fan Header is now blown as it is not powering my stock heat sink and fan. I am now very upset that i have to pay for shipping to return my video card to ATI and now return your item. Is there anything you can do to satisfy me doing business with you again? This is just ridiculous.
    I am also a business owner and a official reseller in my local area and i was going to sell your products but i am now weary of this incident. I will be informing others of this on forums, review sites, and other websites , if i do not hear a response.

    Thanks for your time.

    What do you have to say about this?

    A very dissatisfied customer who is still awaiting a response.

    Here are 2 links with users having the same issue as me. I know for a fact now that your unit is faulty and would like some sort of compensation for this ordeal. I am quite upset i now have to pay for the shipping of my video card back to ATI for a RMA and now your cooling unit .

    I installed an ATI Silencer 5 REV. 2 last week on my powercolor X800XL and its working fine from that day to now. Lucky I suppose so won't complain. I'm just glad it works.

    In regards to those pads did you guys use those pads or take them off and put a paste on?

    Subject: Ati Silencer 5 rev 2 Killed Power header on X800XL.. twice

    dear madam/sir

    I am one of your customer of Arctic Cooling product for some years,
    and quite happy of the performance etc..

    a few weeks ago i had some problem, when one of yout product (Ati
    Silencer 5 rev 2) suddenly died (the fan stop running). so i think
    this is just one of those defective product out of a thousand.

    so i put back my stock cooling, and it died too (power plug connected
    to VGA power header)... so i try to by pass with my PSU (the stock
    cooling power direct to PSU molex), it runs preety well. but the Ati
    Silencer burnt (the PCB burnt and smoking) when i plug it into the PSU
    molex.

    the next day, i RMA'ed my Power Color X800XL to my local distributor
    and got a new one.. the stock cooler runs preety well (so the vga
    power header runs preety well), and then i RMA'ed my Ati Silencer, got
    the new one from my local distributor..

    When i got home, i plug the Ati Silencer, and... the fan is not
    running ,so i switch to my stock cooling.. and it died also.. - so
    thats the 2nd time your product killed the power header).

    And the worst thing happened the next day... the local store which i
    got the Ati Silencer RMA'ed , have to charge me for my 2nd Ati
    Silencer (yes a full $33)... just because the distributor said i just
    void the warranty because of burnt fan PCB and a cutted wire **

    >> so what i must do to be your loyal customer? or can you please do
    something before another customer getting the same problems?

    PS : i really appreciate if you write something that i can show to my
    distributor to get a refund for my first ati silencer

    ** it;s funny the distributor told me that, because in your website,
    you recommend to "direct connect to 12v PSU line" which stated in this
    link :
    http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.p...1&data=7&disc=

    Hope to hear from you soon,

    Sounds like you are going to have to eat it and pick up a VF700 to replace it.
