Exclamation Crucial c300 went back....help on next ssd,s raid 0

    yo,

my cpu, mem, are complety tested and stable first off.so i needed faster storage then my 3 150 gig veliciraptors in raid 0.new x58 mobo sata 3 with "worlds fastest" single sata 3 ssd sounded good....

    ud3r getting prepped for water

wish i read this first about the crucial c300.MANY ppl in the crucial forums also having similar issues.
"The drive would not longer be detected on POST. In fact, with the C300 connected to any machine I couldn't get any OS to boot; the system would just hang at drive detection. After a couple of weeks of toying with my dead drive, Crucial came back to me with an explanation of what's going on."

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/2974/c...te-on-my-drive

ok so i got the amazing cucial c300 128 gig drive on day of release.first week it flew like the wind, games loaded in seconds,win7 install time 8min.second week started to just freeze up for like 10 seconds sometimes in windows 7,cntrl +alt+delete command would be VERY slow to respond.third week would not boot into win7 at all, just hang.a repair would be needed to boot into win7.started reading up on other problems with this drive and said for $500 this should be almost flawless,i mean getting to the point of not even booting in windows???see ya...crucial told me firmware releases are coming,i said cool im returning it,its good when it works..so full refund money back and back to square 1.

so im thinking nice and simple route(not really) but i just want raw performance for cheapest money spent(sub$450)....mabye 3x30 gig ocz vertex,s in raid0??.i need some input on this plz.i also know the ocz vertex pro 2 version is coming out(looks dam good).im running the gigabyte ud3r x58 mobo.any thoughts on what controller on this board to use or buy a cheap raid card???seems to me ALOT of ppl are getting incredible scaling and yields from these smaller cheaper 30-40 gig drives in raid 0 using 2-4 of them vs 1 big drive.

If you aren't benchmarking, I would say a single x25m 160GB would be fine, switch that out for three x25-m 80GB drives in R0 if you want to max out the ich10r bandwidth at large seq file reads otherwise the sky is the limit.

I've had the EXACT same problems with OCZ and Intel SSD's. I'd love to find someone that has not had this problem with their SSD's with RAID 0 after 6 months of use. In my humble opinion, the hardware is still too new and it might be prudent to wait for later versions of motherboards and SSD's where the bugs are fixed.

biggest bang for the buck is 4x kingston 40gb cross flashed to x25-v firmware so you can use the intel ssd toolbox to clean once a month or so.
run them on ich10r in R0 with stripe size of 16KB or so - major storage for very low investment - check the x25-v thread in the storage section.
kingston 40's are as low as $75-100 each.
Too much money? buy just 2 now and 2 more later.

I have had SSD for about two years, mtrons, intels and ocz vertex - no problem with any of them ever booting - none of them - not one has died.
By the way - I graduated from Franklin in southeast Portland - Mt Tabor area.

amen,i could careless about benchmarks.im a gamer and just want sheer speed and response time period.and when im in win7 surfing etc i want 0 problems.....

i know ssds degrade etc,but there getting alil ridicolous of what is happening to them faster and faster.

I have 8, never so much as a hiccup, always recognized, always booted.

Disclaimer: Only ~2 months with them so who knows, just saying I don't think anand and a couple people on the forums (I've seen the posts) are a sign that the drives are generally bad.

not to enter any type of fray over the c300's...

but just remarking that i have had eight vertex in just about every type of array, stripe size, uber overclocks, five different controllers, and just about every type of abuse has been brought upon them. i have benched these poor drives into damn near oblivion.
not one error or problem on these drives.
so larabee, youve found yer guy with zero issues (well maybe some mental issues...)

What chipset were you running the SSD's with? I should also clarify that I have yet to switch to ICH10, so that would make a difference. Also, what was the longest time you've had an array perfectly working without reformatting/restoring/rebuilding?

I ran R0 on ICH10R (overclocked P45) with Patriots PS100 for several months, then Vertex 30 for over half a year, now x18m several months on SB 850... Never had to rebuild failed array, never had boot failure and etc.

mine is goin on 1 1/2 years on an x58 chip set pqi drives in raid 0 "not the fastest" but no issues either. To the op...if you want fast dont count out a single ssd with onboard ich10r...my new system can do this.." mushkin 128 gb ssd"

OCZ's Vertex 2 Pro Preview: The Fastest MLC SSD We've Ever Tested

"The Secret Sauce: 0.5x Write Amplification"

"Basically your controller goes to write some amount of data, but because of a lot of reorganization that needs to be done it ends up writing a lot more data. The ratio of how much you write to how much you wanted to write is write amplification. Ideally this should be 1. You want to write 1GB and you actually write 1GB. In practice this can be as high as 10 or 20x on a really bad SSD. Intel claims that the X25-M’s dynamic nature keeps write amplification down to a manageable 1.1x. SandForce says its controllers write a little less than half what Intel does."

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

for smaller 30gig,60 gig in raid 0,check out below.note some results are mindblowing with raid cards, but even using intels ic10r pwns 3 drives in raid 0.

GREAT read if u didnt see this review yet.im sold.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/2899/3

but be careful if your like me currently with $500-$600 money limit on a single drive and want 100+ gigs to play with plus sheer speed.sandforce has 2 lines ouyt being released

    sf-1200 and the
"amazing?" sf 1500 in the vertex2 pro.im going with the latter.cant wait!

another GREAT READ any size older and current vertex models in raid 0 and scaling.2-4 drives.

my mushkin enhanced is 128 gb and cost less than 400 dollars..The website has them for 5percent off.. I too was gonna go raid 0 again but am so happy with this single drive setup i think ill just add another as a storage drive if need be..

very nice drive u have there but im looking for alil more punch.any any thoughts on this debate going threw my mind with these 2 drives i have listed below???i would be running single drive, NO RAID --sub $500 budget here.stratching the 3x whatever cheapy ssds in raid 0 idea i think vs single solid performance ssd drive.if the drives gets cheaper in time(they will and did already) raid 0 option later.

cant wait for the vertex2 pro!!!! :P
tho its going to be using the new sandforce sf 1500 controller :O

    Enter the SandForce-

"OCZ actually announced its SandForce partnership in November. The companies first met over the summer, and after giggling at the controller maker’s name the two decided to work together."

"Now this isn’t strictly an OCZ thing, far from it. SandForce has inked deals with some pretty big players in the enterprise SSD market. The public ones are clear: A-DATA, OCZ and Unigen have all announced that they’ll be building SandForce drives. I suspected that Seagate may be using SandForce as the basis for its Pulsar drives back when I was first briefed on the SSDs. I won’t be able to confirm for sure until early next year, but based on some of the preliminary performance and reliability data I’m guessing that SandForce is a much bigger player in the market than its small list of public partners would suggest.

SandForce isn’t an SSD manufacturer, rather it’s a controller maker. SandForce produces two controllers: the SF-1200 and SF-1500. The SF-1200 is the client controller, while the SF-1500 is designed for the enterprise market. Both support MLC flash, while the SF-1500 supports SLC. SandForce’s claim to fame is thanks to their extremely low write amplification, MLC enabled drives can be used in enterprise environments (more on this later).

Both the SF-1200 and SF-1500 use a Tensilica DC_570T CPU core. As SandForce is quick to point out, the CPU honestly doesn’t matter - it’s everything around it that determines the performance of the SSD. The same is true for Intel’s SSD. Intel licenses the CPU core for the X25-M from a third party, it’s everything else that make the drive so impressive."

i would like to thank the ppl responding to this thread by giving me diff ideas and real world numbers, options, and opinions for the money.and by the way i will not be running ANY raid cards etc.stock socket 1366 x58a gigabyte ud3r onboard controllers only.yes its the mobo with sata3 ports on it(marvel) and intel ic10r(sata3)...usb 3.0 etc etc(amazing $209 board!).
