yeah, a $200 ethernet port is going to get you significantly higher framerates and significantly lower pings...
please, come on
dont you think businesses and stuff would be using the uber leet gaymen NIC if it really helped that much? it is a prime example of marketing

There are plenty of reviews saying that the killer NIC does nothing on a proper, fast rig with a half decent connection. It will only help if you are also doing other things while gaming, like torrenting.

The little time I played wow I was getting 60+ fps even in cities... I do have a qx9650 @ 4.65ghz though.

Thanks all, will try it out over the weekend. Hope after overclocking his CPU and get all the display setting it can improve a bit more. With his limited budget he can't get a faster CPU nor N1 card for now. Hope for what we can do at the software part can help the game play a little faster and smoother.

Thanks all again.

internet connection has absolutely nothing to do with FPS.

I play wow and my fps is perfectly fine with my rig no issues, ( i use vsync so its pretty much always at 60) yeah it drops a little bit in cities, but its only because the massive amount of people that are
there which puts a lot more strain on your hardware.

What do you mean by "you use Vsyne?" you mean you set it off?

vsync by definition will lower framerates. if you cant tell the difference when it is off... if "it" (which i will not describe, so that you continue to enjoy yourself) does not bother you, turn vsync off.

I always play with vsync enabled but that's because I play at 1920x1200, anything pretty much over 1280x768 needs to have it on unless you can live with the screen tearing (I can't).

As far as gaming goes, my wifes Shuttle (with a 4.8 AMD X2 939) has no issues playing the game (and she only has 2gb ram). My QX9650 @ 3.5ghz and dual 5770's have no issues in Dal or anywhere else. It is CPU\Ram related rather than GPU and it's also worth mentioning not having too much in the way of AA or AF set up, 4x on both 'should' be all that's needed, any more and you're going to suffer with it.

As far as multiple processors are concerned it won't really utilise cores 2 and 3 (because it will use 0 and 1 initially) but it will allow you to multitask better.

I just OC his CPU to 3.0 but the V is about 1.35 is that ok? TEMP is ok about 36c with 100% load w/ Wprime

That's about right, yeah, the temp is actually a bit low for full load, strange.

that was the 32m test now I am trying the 1024 test.
by the way I just looked at the rams speed (which I set to auto) it tuned down the ram from 1001 to 733 I guess it is trying to tune it to 1:1 ratio is that better or should I make it back to 1001?

You will not get huge performance gains. I'd rather go for higher CPU clock speed first, and once you hit the cap for your CPU you can try and push your memory higher if there is still some headroom left.

it looks fine with the temp, but somehow after the w/prime done the CPU V all of a sudden jump to 2.04V for 1 or 2 second. does that mean it is not stable?

wPrime is not a stability test. You'll want to test with Prime95, OCCT, etc.

this went from framerates in a game several years old to overclocking the CPU? yeah, that'll fix it...

That PC is MORE than capable of running WoW.
As we stated before, just play with the settings on the video section of the game. Re-read my previous posts.

And you might want to update video drivers while you are at it, since he changed the video card.

I did up dated his GC driver to 9.12

we tried a lots of setting in the option of WoW we can basically set everything to high except the shadow texture (must be low) otherwise regardless how much I overclock his cpu it still slow.

by the way we already killed all the program so basically WoW is the only program running besides OS which is 32bit XP

as a big WoW gamer my opinion is as follows

i play with vsync on, even though for me due to windowed mode limits it to 30fps most of the time (i have no idea why, but i just does) with vsync off i can get 150fps in empty areas, which really makes the gpu work hard and heats up more, i like to keep it around 50-60% usage, not 99%. so i can keep the fan speed low.

testing fps in a main city is a very bad idea, its just too cluttered and will not represent real experiences (press Cntrl + R to turn on the ingame fps counter) and see what the range is in battle grounds or groups. if he raids, check that too.

cpu clock speed is the most important thing, as long as you have more than 2GB of ram. a quad core will only help by 10%, overclocking is the real factor.

turn on higher settings in every place except shadows and you should be able to enjoy the game, even though some areas will be 20fps, most should be 60+

That's a great tip.
You can see if you get good framerates or not. Because, if you do get high framerates, then... it's a lag/latency problem.
Maybe try to play on a server that is closer to your physical location?
(Meaning: Don't play on a European server if you are American, and vice-versa).

Well thanks all, I guess you all are right about WoW, cause I just got a new game Dragon ago: origin and I have set everything to high with 8aa but everything still smooth so far. May be it just because I am not in a big city yet or it is simply not a online game ^_^
Cheers,

Apply this fix for WoW. WoW Fix Second post follow the instructions. Cut my ping by alot and help stabilized my pings. Also don't max out shadows. I run WoW at 1900x1200 max everything expect for shadows as it kill performance. I also run V-sync as I hate screen tearing.
