Talking Athlon X4 620 into.. what?

    Hi guys.
So last weekend i got a call from a very close friend of mine. He invited me to his place to test a cpu. And i must say i was very happy to find that he was reffering to Athlon X4 620 .
I didn't have much time for overclocking or performance tests because we were mainly after on thing:
    http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=661740
    And we did it
The L3 was unlocked via ACC in the bios
Now i'm trying to convince him to give me some time (a few hours.. ok maybe half a day..) to perform more tests on that sweet chip..

Wait isn't Propus supposed to be a native quad-core without L3 cache or am I just very very tired right now?

then this die shot must be fake: http://www.siliconmadness.com/2009/0...-die-shot.html

AMD's quad core with no L3 cache.
As can clearly be seen, the die shot confirms that the CPU will have only 512KB of L2 cache per core.

    great more wasted phenoms.... :/

did they not say that it would be more expressive to do this :WTH:

this why it cost $160 and not $100....

Would explain why the TDP is higher as well.

    that's.. odd.
and somewhat disapointing. I'm not sure I understand AMD's reasoning here. They made a native die for Dual core.. It seems logical to me to do the same for Value quads given the compeition's main advantage will be threading..

I guess the fact it has 512kb vs 1MB is/was always a clue.

Is It possible there will be some of both out there? (Much like early 2MB Core 2 duo, they were cut down Conroe's before moving to allendale die)

So it's yet another castrated Deneb... Was expecting cheap chips that would clock beyond awesome but with it's really the same die we/I don't need to guess anymore.

    well spotted Flanker..

and RB-C2 Stepping information is missing also.

certainly something a bit odd compared to other unlocked denebs (cache, and cores)

Sorry Chinook. I should have said I don't doubt you at all, and I thank you for posting this early info..

At first glance it appears you're the first to discover that Propus is NOT a native L3-less die..

There are just some oddities with the model numbering that's all. There's no way i'd suggest your chip is not a Propus baded on just that

This just shows that some of the Athlon X4s are salvaged Denebs, not that Propus is Deneb with disabled L3.The fact that CPUz shows it as Propus is probably just an error and it doesn't detect it properly.

I knew that this would happen

still, if it is sells for US$100, would definitely hurt intel's C2D E8000 (or C2Q8000 maybe?)

as for overclocking, if that is true that this propus is a salvaged deneb, I can guess how does its OC. let's see if that L3 cache didn't broke at all

    benchmark please....

The Dieshot of the L3 Less Quad core was first discovered by Hans De Vries and the thread where he posted the die shot is located HERE

It seems that maybe the Earlier Athlon II X4's with higher TDP are Phenom II's with locked cache and the energy efficient 45watt Athlon II X4's are the real Propus.

When can you buy one in the US? I just bought a Athlon II X2 240 for a under 100watt machine would be interesting to try to build a low watt quad with one of these

The real Propus/Rana stepping is BL-C2.

Not some, all of them has to be, or none of them. The difference in powerdraw would vary to much between 2 different dies where one of them has alot of "scrap silicon". I would even go as far as saying Propus will use a different 45nm process (AMDs server parts uses 2-3 different ones afaik).

I trust Oliverda more than this source and still believe Propus is a L3-less die until I am proven otherwise by a reliable source.

I have arranged a benchmarking session monday. Pics of the chip (and you'll get your info of stepping from there), bios screenshots, test results with and without L3, overclocking. Would that be reliable source?................
If not, what is a reliable source for you Smartidiot89?
