Hi,

here is a test with a few benchmarks with a Core i7 920 and a Lynnfield (both with 2.66Ghz).

hmm, almost entirely identical performance aside from bandwidth benches.
no one saw that coming.

Hmm... Core i5 looks nice! power is very similar to Core i7.

Dual channel vs. Triple channel seems to be the biggest difference then, interesting. This seems to lend credence to the rumors that the i7 920 is about to go away.

Similar performance, lower powerdraw and cheaper. What is there not to like about this fellow?

Did anyone notice the voltage difference?
If that's correct then i5 should produce a bit less heat than i7 delivering almost the same performance.

Isn't the entry level i5 supposed to have HT disabled?

at least we don't have to worry about the board prices being nearly same price as x58 as they perform the same

the lower power consumption mostly comes from the platform (removed NB, less ram slots) and the lower VID of i5.

It'll be very interesting to see what intel chooses to do with 1366 as a platform. It wouldn't surprise me much if it became essentially what 771 was for 775 where, yes there are single socket boards but they are uncommon.

Anyone looking to sell 1366 boards or chips should probably do it before September.

Hmm interesting numbers. I don't know much about HT (besides the name and that there are 8 threads instead of 4), but will it effect the performance or is it like adding false cores that only are utilized by certain multi-threaded programs?

na its not on the package, its completly on the die, hence why i said removed. Or better there was never a NB, cause the PCI-E controller is on die.

Its true for clarksdale, there you can say the NB is on the package.

Lynnfield 2.66Ghz as far as I'm aware won't be sold with HT. Ergo, the results are pointless.

Seems HT has been left on so it's almost like an i7 tri vs dual channel mem.

but its not confirmed that the 2.66Ghz lynnfield come without HT.

And if not thatīs no problem, it is only a clock for clock comparison. The 2.8Ghz Lynnfield with HT cost almost the
same as the 2.66Ghz Core i7 ($284). So you get more power for same money

Regards
Chris

The in/ex-clusion of HT on the 2,66GHz Lynnfield has been just a much confirmed as the prices on theses CPUs, AFAIK.

So will all the whining of Core i7 920/950 disappearing end now?

This is exactly what I said all along, Core i5 will fill that marketing gap....
