    4870X2 GTA4 Performance

Hey guys, just got a used 4870X2 that works flawlessly with every other game I have (Crysis, COD5, COD4 etc) however GTA4 is giving me issues.

I am running on the recommended settings in game @ 1920x1200 (sometimes bring it down to 1920x1080) but I get around 20FPS which is weird seeing that I can play the game better with my older duel 3870s.

    My specs are
    Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz
    4GB of Patriot DDR2 800 Ram
    ASUS Maximus Formula SE
    4870X2
    Kingwin 700Watt PSU

Just a note, I uninstalled the old drivers, took out my 3870s, put the X2 in and installed the newest drivers (used driver cleaner too).

I have a screen shot of Rivatuner that shows the GPU usage for both GPUS, and its not even maxed out. I see that my page file memory is also used up, could this be why the performance is so bad?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I don't think GTAIV plays well with SLI or Xfire, and perhaps especially so with the 4870X2.

I have the one and only patch installed, I thought it was a CF problem too but the game runs great with CF 3870s, just not with a 4870X2. NameTaken45, I bought the game from bestbuy so no.

I have almost the same specs as you and I played GTA 4 on a 24" b4 I upgraded to a 30" and I had no problem with it as I can play the game smoothly @ both 1920x1200 and even 2560x1600 with my X2. Try to uninstall the driver, use Driver Cleaner in safe mode then reinstall the driver. Btw I've heard people have worse experience right after upgrading to the first patch so you might take note of that, I've played the game from the beginning to the end with the first patch and had no issues. Here's my benchmark when I had the 24"

Im getting playable framerates, but nothing spectacular with my 4870X2, some minor slowdowns while driving with alot of traffic or wether effects. Adding the lines -norestrictions -nomemrestrict -novblank in GTA IV.EXE helepd alot In my case.

with my 3870 and 1600x1200 100hrz, med, highest vew distance 35 and everything maxed i get no slow downs at all

the game is also vary IO and memory sensitive so that could be a problem with multi gpu. and switching from ddr2 to ddr3 helped that game by a noticeable amount

Thanks for all the replies, I have uninstalled and ran driver cleaner then re installed the drivers and still the same - it's just a problem with this game because everything else plays the way it should. I also have the patch installed...

The game crashes due to "not enough video memory" as well. I hope they release another patch soon.

Try disabling the clip capture inside the game. It will let you play a lot longer without giving the "not enough video memory" error and it might even resolve it completely. (Going from 4 to 8 GB ram also made a difference)

I have the game through steam.

Yes, GTA IV is very CPU intensive. The more cores the better the game runs. I have an e6420 and an x2 and see a little more load on my GPUs than you, but not much.

Also, WTF is up with that page filing!?!? I run XP and have mine turned down to 512mb with 2GB of ram, but still there is hardly ever any page filing going on while playing the game. You mention that your running the "recommended settings in the game". What exactly are they? Have you set highest priority to the game in Vista when running it? Some have reported to get better play out of the game.

I forget the exact settings, but I can remember 1920x1200 high textures, high render quality I forgot the rest, believe they are all defaults.

It's probably the high textures. I've found that they use up a massive amount of system memory. I think that is why your file paging is going crazy. Turn it down to medium and see if that helps.

omg, why didnt i think of that, i could set rivatuner to log pf & ram! (generally gta4 crashes after 30-60min)

    i play at '1920x1200, textures-high, render-highest, view-15, detail-45, vehicle-20, shadow-16 - 45-65fps with dips to 30 '

Thanks for all the help guys, I have finally settled on some settings that keep it from crashing... However I still feel that the X2 should be able to max this game out - I guess if the other 1GB of VRam was recognized by the game then it would.

Yes the new patch is very helpful in preventing crashes when alt-tab out of game. It load quicker and gives you more control over the graphics now too.
