Holidays are a good time of the year, mostly for eating season goodies, meet with friends and relatives, and have some good old Christmas spirit. Well, sometimes holidays are also good for a little bit of LN2 action, just to stimulate the part of the brain in charge of overclocking. So, along with my buddy
Micutzu, we had some fun today with a retail Core i7 965 Extreme.
Setup
Intel Core i7 965 Extreme Edition
Duniek CPU Pot
Gigabyte GA-X58 Extreme
3 x 1GB DDR3 Kingston
3 x Gigabyte GTX280
Seventeam 1200W
The clocks
Cold Bug - -110oC
Coold Boot - -85oC
Vcore - 1.55v-1.65v
Valid -
5008MHz (15th i7 on HWB, not a bad puppy, no?)
SuperPI 1M-
4914MHz - 8.584s
WPrime 32M -
4850MHz - 5.143s
3DMark Vantage -
4700MHz
Well, we mostly benched Vantage to see how high the CPU can take it, without some serious VGA cooling there is no outstanding result coming out of this. The result from today (CPU @ 4700MHz / GPU @ 725MHz was weaker then my last run, (CPU @ 4400MHz / GPU @ 755MHz). Both results are not quite worthy (darn I need 3 TEK 9's), but then again...pretty interesting for VGA's on air, with stock cooling

What is very interesting from my point of view is the clocks this CPU can handle with Vantage. 4700 MHz (I also had succes at 4730) seems like a respectable clock for Vantage, so I am pleased with this CPU.
That being said, I wish you all a Happy New Year and lot of fun at New Year's Eve
