This is a good start, regardless it is still a pre-order. I almost got my hopes up.

    Wink

This puts it in contention with Intel's Q9550...

IMHO, that would be the processor that its up against. Logically the clock difference reduces the performance gap.

Observations based on Shanghai's Cinebench benchmark..

    Silly, maybe...

Cinebench is one of the intel "tuned" apps, but all things considered,Deneb and Yorkfield should be a match clock for clock,on average.

How much is VAT in Australia? Trying to figure out how much it would cost here..

edit: nvm, did a google search and it seems it's 10%, so the MSRP should be $299 US (or lower, preorders like this one are usually inflated).
Considering the VAT in Romania is 19% I don't think I'll afford this one, I'll probably go for the 920.. Though that one has a locked multi so it may not OC that great..

I'd expect it to be faster actually. Clock for clock it should be at least close and it's clocked about 300mhz faster so it should be easily faster than the Q955. Even an Agena would match a Yorkfield with that kind of clockspeed advantage for many apps.

I cant see how you reached that conclusion if the cost is what worries you. P2 940 and i920 seem to cost the same, and mobos are at least $100 cheaper. (the ECS X58 mobo costs 240E here)

So you expect amd to give away a proc that performs better then a similar clocked yorkfield (the Q9650) for less money (200€)?... very generous of amd if this is really the case, would make a tempting offer.

BE have the same price of i7 920 or is even more expensive
I think best price would be around 230-240€ if they want to gain some market share.

That's what I was thinking.. except not Agena, but Shanghai/Deneb.. Maybe just a bit faster given the clock advantage.

'Tuned' is not really the right word in my opinion, Intel has not really done anything to tune Cinebench in particular and a more accurate word would be 'prefers'.

Could you tell me why such a comment was necessary? It does not add anything to the thread and it seems a bit of, dare I say it, flame baiting. Unless you meant to be sarcastic, but that does not seem to be the case.

Pricing as it appears to be now seems to be quite attractive, even though there might be a fair share of price gouging involved here.
I can't wait to build my new system somewhere in the latter half of next year.

Offtopic: If it was only once, but it is at least once per thread where you HAVE TO say something bad about AMD. A honest Intel fanboy, aren't you, Horntel331?
