Hey awesome work Tony!
Seeing all this higher than B2 clocking is getting me excited =) been waiting before upgrading to phenom.
I have just one main question to Tony or anyone else that may have this board. But do you think the DFI 790FX DK M2RS bios and hardware design is capable/flexible enough or similary enough to the M2R to achieve the same results in OC'in Phenom B3?

I have a question... what memory kit should be best for running the 9850 phenom in windows xp 32-bit.
should i do pc6400 or pc8500?? 2x1gb or 2x2gb??
im considering the Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC8500 kit (BL2KIT12864AL1065)
or should i fork out a little more and go with the G.Skill (F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ)
i have the Asus M3A32-mvp mobo sitting here and going to be using the coolermaster gemini II to cool it.

I think tony is partial to OCZ ram ^^

Now i said I was not going to do this, comparing Intel to AMD is against the rules but this just tickled me a little. I know its only 3Dmark 06 but some guys live and die by this bench.
Specs are:
Intel:
9650quad at 3.4GHZ (340x10)
Ram OCZ 6400EB at 1020MHZ 5-5-5-15 tweaked out on 780i
Board EVGA 780i
Video EVGA 8800Ultra stock clocks
1000W PXS OCZ PSU
Watercooling by OCZ Hydroflow, final beta (release sample)
AMD specs
Phenom 9850 at 3.414GHZ (253x13.5)
ram OCZ Reaper X8000 at 1012MHZ 5-5-5-15 tweaked out on 790FX
Board Gigabyte 790FX DQ6
Video EVGA 8800Ultra
860W PCPC PSU
Watercooling by OCZ Hydroflow, Final beta (release sample)
So you see, real similar specs. Please don't give me the excuse the phenom has an advantage because its HTT is at 253...HTT makes no difference on this CPU and if you study Phenom architecture you will know why.
I used 253 to get as close as I could to similar cpu and ram speeds.
so here we go..Intel first.
And now the AMD Phenom
kinda weird thing is the AMD cpu won here ...LOL not by much I know
No flames, bashing or moaning, mods please keep an eye on this LOL
so the debate continues.
Running 252x13.5 on the phenom now as this looks even closer to the Intel CPU speed

Well, the Phenom is 13MHz higher clocked, that's really unfair. :p Just had to say it before another troll :P

If this turns out to be the norm, you are leaving us with a VERY difficult descision. Buy this now, enjoy wicked clocks, and when the 45nms come out they may clock crappily at first in comparison like 65nm did at first... Or wait for 45nm to start clockin well and see how much further it goes...
Too bad the wife wont let me do both.

in the cpu score phenom loses as it expected to be, but its kinda interesting on how the 3d scores are higher with the phenom than intel's

That would mean that the Intel wins the CPU rendering test, but the AMD actually boosts real gaming FPS higher right? (Ram may play a role too but because of the IMC, that is part of AMDs edge)
Translation, 3dmark06 is a horrible excuse for a gaming benchmark because they put in highly parallel stinkin CPU benchmark which is unrelated to gaming, ive been saying that for ages though.

Tony,
I see that the vcore for Phenom is showing 1.472V in the CPU-Z screenshot, was it real ? because you have mentioned somewhere above that you required ~ 1.35V or so for doing 3.4
Correct me if i am wrong.

a few of my reviewer buddies have been telling me Phenom gives games a smoothness that is not there on Intel rigs...Yes the frame rates may be a little lower but when on full load the Phenom's just pure along allowing the game to flow.
now im not going to debate what i just said here, i don't play enough PC games to notice but I talk to quite a few tier 1 reviewers who do test and many say the same thing.
anyway...the scores are close i know, it just shows what an apples to apples comparison will kick up

whats the big deal with voltage?..I set 1.45V for 3.4GHZ, it droops quite a bit on load and CPU-z looks to read higher than measured on the board

HT speed seems to have a massive impact on how well these CPU's clock. I had a much easier time setting 1400MHZ HT so the 7 multi. As soon as i did this especially on the GBT DQ6 the board and CPU took off, 1.45V looks to have me 3.4GHZ near 100% stable and 1.3V up to around 3.2GHZ.
|
This is what i SET in bios...no idea what the board is applying though at this time

My apologies if that sounded like picking up a fight,it was really not my intention
I was just curious, after seeing your results, i am really keen on buying one for myself.Getting my doubts cleared before i take the plunge, thats all.
BTW, does HT3 make a lot of difference ? I have a Asus M2N32 SLI and plan to use the 9850 with it,will it really make a big difference because the 590 SLI is not HT3.0 ?
Sorry if i offended you.

no offense taken , was just the amount of notice many of you guys actually take of apps reading voltages amazes me....i keep saying the ONLY way to be sure is measure it properly
get a 790FX board m8...if you must wait for SB700 boards to surface but still go with the new gen and demote the old asus to a home theater rig

If you want the LP790FX M2R buy it now, they appear to have gone EOL replaced by the dark version.
I like the Gigabyte although not as many tweaks
im testing the Asus soon...Missed delivery today LOL

Tony,
could you please test it on the msi k9a2 platinum as i'm very interested in getting this board. i'll consider the gigabyte too as the dfi is out of the question due to memory support limitation. i intend to use 8 gigs of ddr2 in my next build with a 9850. will you test the 9750 as well if you have it? i'm glued to this thread. thanks.

You should both chill lol, PI on these should be faster than their predecessors, and scale alot more with the clock, which is what I'd like to see. I was grateful he posted a 3d06 cpu score, and it looks good.
Again, I don't want to see phenom do 5sec pi1m, I want to see how a 3g+ phenom improves the computing time versus a stock one, and compare it with intel. In fewer words, i want to see how it scales. Get it? Yeah.
If he doesn't wanna run it, as i said, tough luck. It's his hardware afterall, I'll wait along.
*note to self, mention pi in an amd thread if you want to be flamed

The Asus board is great once you get use to the fact that some of the settings are named a bit wrong.
The northbridge does get a bit warmer than all the other boards, Im looking for chipset fan replacements for mine.

I have the board but probably not that much time, I will be testing 8GB on the GBT and the DFI and WILL get round to the MSI but it won't be this week
The only issue on the DFI I found was SPD detection of tRFC, if you force it you don't see the issue
