I did the mod today and mine also craps out as soon as I put the vr on. This is just anoying.
Stock it gets 1.1-1.11v and when i put the vr on the voltage is 1.15. I cant even be in windows for more than a few seconds.
This card is rapidly turning into the most f***ed up thing i've bought
cpu : e6850 @ 3.5ghz
cooler : boxed
mem : balistix 8500 @ 1000mhz 4-4-4-4
board : asus p5k-e wifi
graphics : 7800gtx
harddisk : wd raptor 74gb
dvd : nec 7173A
dvdrw : optiarc 18x
psu : enermax liberty 620W
screen : dell 3007wfp hc
I tried to ground the pin #35 today and it seemed to work, sort of. I ran some benchies but the card power line components quickly turned very hot and started to produce a pitched sound and this was only with 1.25V (3d) voltage and 775 clock. But maybe this is good news to people using extreme cooling?
I guess I'm stuck to 800/2000/1107 clocks with this card.
Nothing helps my card. Tried grounding pin35 (VID5) as Xargo suggested - same black screen.
Xargo may i ask you why exactly vid5? There are VID0-VID6 - why exactly VID5?
It was as largon suggested here:
But anyway, I suspect it's the power phases holding this card back. Looks like if you want to have a nice overclock, better not get the reference design. I'm thinking step-up to 9800gtx or some such. Should have plenty enough power headroom at least =)
I'm just a little bit disappointed with my 9600 considering I was able to run 8600gts @ 1.666V \,,/ with only air cooling. Not a reference design though. Now I'm going to sell it.
I tried a quick and dirty VGPU mod and it doesnt work. OVP or whatever seems to kick in at about 1.18V. Funny is that the card has 1.01V for bootup and 1.11V once it loads the driver. 1.13-1.15V is the voltage under load.

Good news!
I tried modding the voltage settings in bios today. I was able to boot the system @ 1.52V (1.58V 3d) and run these tests (one by one) in 3dmark06:
Fill Rate - Single-Texturing 6625,231 MTexels/s
Fill Rate - Multi-Texturing 21136,088 MTexels/s
Pixel Shader 414,076 FPS
Vertex Shader - Simple 225,755 MVertices/s
Vertex Shader - Complex 173,459 MVertices/s
Shader Particles (SM3.0) 128,667 FPS
Perlin Noise (SM3.0) 126,964 FPS
Clocks were 875/2150/945. Somehow the gpu overclock resulted in poor memory overclock and 999 mem crashed the tests instantly, vmem was 2.075V.
The stated voltage was achieved together with the 1.2V vid-mod so I have no idea what voltage the card would run if you just flashed my modified bios without any mods. In case someone wants to give it a try, I put it online here:
http://www.hut.fi/~hjkauhan/9600mod.rom
If you try it out, please report what voltage you get. Just be careful with the 1.58 vgpu, the core reached 103C in multi-texturing test with a VF-900cu cooler.
I doubt the bios will help me, but thx i will try it.
Can you run atitool artifact scanner too at those frequencies?
Did you measure the voltage with DMM?
edit: the bios file you supplied is with the default voltage setting.

Atitool has never worked for me even with default settings with any of the three geforces I have (6800u, 8600gts, 9600gt). I gave it a go anyway and it crashed instantly when I started the artifact scan.
Here's a photo of the voltage reading in idle:
That's strange. I haven't tried it without the 1.2V vid mod though. When looking at the vid-table, going from 1.2V to 1.5V would require going from 0011000 to 0000000. So one explanation could be that when you have default settings ( 0100000 ), the bios switches the vid4 and 3 to "0" but they are "0" already so nothing happens. Could this explain what's happening here?
If it works like that, I could try out 1.1125V ( 0011111 ) which would (hopefully) result in 1.4125V ( 0000111 ).
edit: Ok, I didn't think it all the way through... we only have knowledge of vid2-5 resistors so I can't set 0011111. So I tried setting 1.15V ( 0011100 ) and with my modded bios the multimeter now shows 1.48V. Time for some benchmarks.

We should focus on OCP or something else, they are the main problems we meet. But dont give up so easily.
2-phase design is not so weak, Just think about 8800GT reference card,it's 2-phase design too!
When I try to boot with more than 1.2xx Volt with just the VGPUmod, the card shuts down immediately after a few seconds.

Fr3ak,
Have you tried to disable OVP by grouding pin #35 on ADP3208A?
You were not supposed to see this.
http://www.galaxytech.com/Product_De...ass1=1&class2= any one know a vmod for that?
So still no-go on just a modified bios, then?
EVGA 780I P02bios
E8400@3.6
BFG 9600gt SLI 710/1000
2x2g GSkill ddr2
Sceptre 20.1 naga
Antec SP500/TT Sli psu
I guess we are stuck here with OCP.
@Fatbird - have you found anything interesting out yet?
Nowhere on the internets is any information on how to mod the OCP on 9600gt. In fact many people have problems with factory overclocked cards on reference design which has been called the black screen - the same thing which happens when we slightly increase the voltage and try to up frequencies (and even when not increasing the voltage but upping the gpu/shader freq.).
Atitool artifact scan is a beautiful test to see the black screen in action immediately almost every time.

Got bored with my G92GTS which is overkill for my needs anyways, so I decided to downgrade and save some $$$ and ordered a Palit 9600GT. It's a non-reference btw.
I guess I'm gonna have to warm-up my soldering iron again. :p
You were not supposed to see this.
Nice!
But sad that it is not reference, then you would prolly come up with some ocp mod.
Anyways gratz and keep us posted.
I have this card and know vmem mod - it is pretty easy, pencil vmem
Do you try voltmods ?
I think i found a place to pencil to increase vGPU, but when i make ~1.17v (and up, max i tried was 1.25) on GPU i have many artifacts in 3DMarks. 2D and Ati Tool Artifacts Scan are clear
