My cousin on drums Hi Brian !
Just got in a retail E8400 today from mwave.com. Pack date is 3/27/08 so it's ultra fresh. Currently priming at 3.83ghz (425 * 9), 1.25v in bios on a DFI P35 UT T2R. It primed fine at 3.6ghz stock voltage but only for about 10 minutes before I wanted to try higher.
I'll post back later with further results.

Alright... so I thought I would try to see how low I could go. This is about it... cant really remember what I set it to in bios but this is what it reads in cpu-z under load. Sniggle.... try 1800fsb. I couldnt get it stable below 1.38+ in bios.

It's not that I wasn't stable at 3.6; it's that I didn't give it a chance to fail. I knew this chip could do better.
Now priming at 4.05ghz @ 1.33v in bios. When I tried 4.2 it would not even do one iteration of prime before failing even at 1.36v so I knew I was hitting the point of diminishing returns. I might try to optimize further to get 4.2 stable but 4.05 was my goal so I'm good here for now.

Hello, my first post on this forum so i hope it's gonna be a good one. Yesterday I've installed a Scythe Ninja Plus so i wanted to see what can my e8400 do. The FPO is Q746A496 and it's pack date 1/31/08. Tell me what do you think about the temperatures and give me tips because i need them . I know it should be a 1 hour Orthos test, but i got bored after 10 minutes .
I am going to settle on 4.15ghz @ 1.4v for now. It's needing way more voltage to get any higher. This setting is prime (small fft) stable for 9.5 hours which is good enough for me. I might actually be able to get away with lower voltage since I made a fairly random jump to 1.4 after 1.38 didn't work @ 4.2ghz.
The chip is a SLAPL, FPO is Q802A321

The temps on this chip are way out of kilter.
With realtemp, idle is high 40's but load is only a couple of degrees higher.
I was able to oc to 3.6 at auto voltage (little over an hour of orthos so far)
The VID on this chip is 1.0625 (not sure if that is good or not though)
Are the temps actual? I have a lapped thermalright ultra 120 e with a monster fan on it. With my Q6600 overclocked to 3.2, idle was around 34c or less on cores and load maxed out at 52C and downwards.

@ Robilar: Mine idles at 34c no matter how low I go. For example my o'c 4.05ghz 1.38v idles 34c. My 3.6ghz 1.2v idles 34c. I have non-lapped TRUE. I say just make sure it's mounted solid and you should be good.
@ ovidiu: 10mins means jack IMO. I've ran solid for 45mins and gotten errors after that. I would say IMHO that 2 hours is proof of stability. Anything shorter just doesn't cut it in my book. Post back with a 2 hour stress or longer for stability praise
@ sniggle. That's rock solid stable IMO. What is memory set to? Linked/unlinked? all other settings. I've had a hard time above 1800mhz FSB. Actually I was stable for 10 hours Prime95 @ 1800mhz, 1.375v and when I did orthos I was failing after 45mins same settings. I never did try to get orthos stable I went all the way up to 1.385 or something and just got mad. I am stable now though at 1600mhz @ 1.2v, pretty happy with low setting.
General q: I set Intel speedstep auto and power management in windows to balanced. So multi at idle drops to 6x. Is there a reason why I shouldn't do this? I mean it jumps up with a load. I just figured why not save a bit on energy bill when I'm not playing games or using cpu intensely. The power is there when I need it and it's stable. I'm just wondering why others aren't doing this.

My Core 0 is stuck on 34C until I get over that, then it works, Core 1 seems to work, at least I think so as it says I am 27C idle.
Smart Guardian gives my 15C idle.

@ AndyM, What are your other voltage settings, ie; VTT and Northbridge at?

I have to wonder if people aren't doing something in their initial testing that's different from later testing. I know I had some similar/strange behavior on my e6750 - I was 100% stable (OCCT for like 6 hours) at 3.6ghz for the first couple of months, following that I could only hit 3.35 with some instability at the same volts.
The biggest thing I wonder is if ambient conditions changed, or airflow, or dust accumulated in the machine, that kind of thing.

Memory is unlinked at 5:6. Haven't tried orthos yet but I just played Titan's Quest for a few hours with no issues. Before I go to sleep tonight I might drop the vcore and NB voltage a notch and see if it's still stable. Maybe even the VTT since I upped it on a whim.
